>> in the news this saturday morning, august 18, a man is shot in the face after an argument in a stadium parking lot during the raid he is preseason game in arizona. and a violent high riske sex offender on the lose after escaping from a mental health facility in redwood city. good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. rain in parts of the bay area this morning. let's check the forecast. in for lisa argen, here's jeff martinez. >> that's right. we were mentioning it on our way to work, light showers out there. partly cloudy conditions, mostly cloudy conditions and fog off the coast. we are starting out with scattered light precipitation as you see here. just a few light showers going

on, mainly up to the north. napa had a thunderstorm earlier this morning. started to clear out but as you head up to clear lake a line of storms here. light precipitation down toward the east bay and santa rosa. showers in the forecast throughout the morning hours and then we will start to clear things up. i'll talk more about that and have the full weekend forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks a lot. this morning, a high riske sex offender is on the lose. daric sander escaped from redwood city facility yesterday. we have the story." >> reporter: 34-year-old daric sanders is a wanted man after escaping from redwood city facility. >> he left early this morning through an elevator shaft. >> staff noticed he was missing through early morning rounds. sheriff's office is concerned because sanders is a high riske sex offender. >> he's a parolee. he has violence in his history. he has a prior sex offense in his history.

the fact he also has a sex offense with minors is definitely a high riske in our community. >> sanders was placed there by parole officers. it's a locked facility, but it's a treatment center. the company that provides the care industries it as a rehabilitation center. >> there's ways to leave this facility without going through the elevator shaft. >> going up here i never heard of anybody escaping or seeing anything weird. but knowing about this is kind of scary. >> she likes to bring her one and two-year-old daughters to her childhood home so they can see their grandparents. the house is just down the street from the facility. >> i'm afraid for my children. i don't know how often i want to come back here to my parents' house because they are so close. >> she doesn't normally go by the facility but other neighbors do. >> once in a while you see one of the patients walking around, and i think they let him out for that purpose. >> the trail-goers i spoke with

aren't too concerned about the escape. >> well, every so often and that's what i'm more conscious about than any wild or lose parolee. >> but authorities want sanders back in custody as soon as possible so area agencies have been notified. >> he's basically a transient. he has some family here in the county and also in oakland. we believe that he's probably walking away from this area. >> and sanders is 5'11", 165 pounds. take another good look at him there. he was last seen wearing a red polo shirt and blue jeans. police want to stress that you should not approach this man. if you do see him or have any idea where he is, be sure to call police right a way. abc7 news. >> tragedy in san jose as a three-year-old girl drowns in a family swimming pool. it happened just before 7:30 last night. police say the child simply went into the pool, went unnoticed.

there's no evidence of any foul play. the investigation does continue. she was taken to regional medical center where she was pronounced dead. >> this morning police in arizona are investigating a shooting outside the raiders-cardinals game last night. it happened in glendale just outside of phoenix where a 30-year-old man was shot in the face in the parking lot. the shooter didn't leave the scene. he waited for police to arrive. shooting victim was rushed to a hospital and is expected to survive. both men are arizona residents. no word what led to the fight other than an argument between football fans. a device used to make illegal narcotics was blown up in palo alto last night. they had a shelter in place for nearly five hours. the bomb squad blew up the device just after 7:30. earlier residents reported seeing what looked to be a soda bottle wrapped in tape and gauze in a driveway. police sent in a row got to

check things out before deciding to detonate the device. new this morning the panel that found suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi committed official misconduct, now says it will not make a recommendation as to whether he should keep or lose his job. the san francisco chronicle reports that comes from city ethics commission executive director. the ethics commission decided in a 4-1 vote his domestic violence related guilty plea to a maryland does amount to official misconduct. the sheriff's attorney said the committee should recommend to the board that he keep his job. and that rests with the 11 member board of area supervisors. >> this morning they a congressn will be joining the search for sierra lamar at morgan hill. there have been weekly searches since her disappearance. the congress plan will participate in the search starting at 8:00 a.m.

even though her body has yet to be found, a man is charged with her murder. police say they have dna evidence linking the man to to the crime. muni is taking the step of banning controversy am ads on their buses. abc7 news reporter john alston has reaction from both sides. >> reporter: the dueling ads appear side by side on ten muni bus. the last one popped up last week. today muni came back with its response. a bus card saying its policies prohibit discrimination and it condemns statements that describe any group as savages. >> obviously we think the ads in place right now are repulsive and they cross the line. there's not lot we can do in light of the first amendment.

thriving on creating fear of millions of muslims across the world. >> she said her muni adams campaign costs about $5,000 and is her first amendment right. today the council on the islamic american relations said the money be used for countering hate speech. abc7 news. the state's lead investigator into the chevron refinery fire accuses federal investigators of bias media grandstanding and scaring the public with half truths and misleading information. cal osha and the chemical safety board said they agreed to preserve the accident site while their investigation continues. they said the structure is too unstable to enter. they are openly critical of federal investigators who have intervened in the case. his facebook page suggests friction with the agencies.

campbell police are urging caution for people looking to buy apple products off websites like ebay and craigslist. that's because those items might be stolen. last weekend thieves broke into the fryea electronic store. this is video of the robbery as it went on. they said that's where the stolen items will most likely end up. speaking of stolen property, the man who ended up with steve job's ipad said he had no idea it had been stolen. jobs home was burglarized last month. ipads, computers, champagne all stolen. a 33-year-old man confessed to the theft but before he was arrested he gave the i-phone to his friend, kenny the clown, who had words of advice for their

>> this afternoon a memorial service is planned for a marine killed eight days ago in afghanistan. 29-year-old captain was shot and killed along with two other marines while conducting combat operation necessary the southern part of that country. his father said they were attacked by a local afghan any wearing a police uniform. the service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the st. francis gym in mountain view. police say to expect heavy traffic in the area with more than 1,000 people expected to attend. the family is creating a scholarship in his honor. tomorrow morning a helicopter with the national guard in stockton will depart for fort hood, texas. there is a ceremony that take place at 2:30 this afternoon at the stockton fight facility on

way in not too long. >> this afternoon. >> we have many more weather questions in a couple minutes. new this morning a strong earthquake, magnitude 6.6, knocked a northern indonesian island. the quake struck 30 miles southeast of palu city on an island. it's not the world's most popular island but it's the 11th largest. 14 million people live there. it struck at a depth of 13 miles. no reports of damage or injuries. another round of fast moving thunderstorms could strike today in southern california. heavy rains from thunderstorms caused flash flooding through parts of san bernardino county. look at the individual flow from this community of forest falls near victorville. evacuations were not ordered but the flooding blocked access to roads in the area. nothing like that this morning, but i was surprised by that downpour. boom!

as well, light showers going on right now and again out around santa rosa. so most of this will start to dissipate by the afternoon hours as we start to see a little bit of drier air moving into the area. out toward stockton and as we head down toward the south bay things are clear here. just patchy fog along the coast. not too bad. otherwise the temperatures are a little cooler today. certainly been a hot one, especially inland the past week or so much he with are starting to see a nice cooling trend the next few days. the temperatures out there right now, not bad. 60 oakland, 66 in san francisco, 55 half moon bay. the weather highlights look like this. light showers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the morning hours. areas of fog by the coast and then we start to clear things out nicely by sunday and monday as dryer air works into the forecast area. so looks like a pretty good week the next few days. here's the reason why we have been seeing the scattered showers and thunderstorms. an area of low pressure off to the north producing a southernly

flow. a stream of moisture work its way into the area. again it will be with us mainly through the morning hours today and by this afternoon things will start to clear on out, mainly some high clouds throughout the day today. but if you are heading up to the sierra, they had thunderstorms around lake tahoe yesterday and northstar. big thunderstorms there and also down toward gardenville they had a mudslide on highway 395 which shut down for a time. it is open now. but thunderstorms in the forecast along the sierra if you are headed in that direction by this afternoon. today looking pretty good out there. we will see light showers mainly in the morning hours. temperatures in the 50s and 60s around 8:00. and top out around 90. 70 degrees or so here in the city. temperatures hot up to the north. 92 clear lake and nowhere near that 100 you had just a couple days ago. 80s inland. 69 in oakland today. san francisco about 63 degrees and down to the south bay we will see temperatures around 80

california. most will have to started charging you sales tax. it could lead to a stampede in online buying before it kicks in. here's the details from nannette miranda. >> the days of skirting the sales tax for most john lined purchases are numbered for most californians. the department of tax state it had this week. on the sag out-of-state e tailers must start collecting the sales tax. >> the estimate for the state will receive from the collection of the sales tax is low end $250 million up to $500 million. so that will be great in this time of deficits. >> most californians don't know that if an e-taylor doesn't collect the sales tax they are supposed to pay it on their own when they file their income taxes.

bookstore owner fought for nearly a decade to level the playing field. she said the stores have lost sales to competitors who don't charge a sales tax. >> people look for a lesser cost would naturally gravitate to that source. we felt it was an unfair advantage. >> they are forcing them to collect sales tax on companies that don't have a presence in california. the deal made with california leaders was a seek a federal internet tax and if that failed the state tax would go into effect. what they got out of the deal was amazon promising to open facilities in the area and hiring thousands of people. one is already in production. mr. clark is fine with paying the sales tax. >> it's just crazy to have these large retail outlets escape taxation. everyone is concerned about the survival of downtown, the

bringing his car with him. that's going to be a pretty cool event. in the south bay, santa clara unified school district teachers will be handing out free school supplies to kindergarten to eighth graders. it takes place in santa clara behind the franklin mall. school starts monday in the santa clara school district. a group of little leaguers from indianapolis have stepped up to the plate to help out a competing team in williamsport at the little league world series. check it out. the team learned their roommates from uganda didn't have snuff clothes and shoes to go around. the kids called their parents to organize a donation drive and collected more than enough for them. that's cool. and you can watch petaluma's little league's team against goodletsville, tennessee. you can see had right here on abc7. the radiation is contaminating treasure island

serious concerns about winco. >> we have a number of complaints filed against them, a few in the last couple weeks. there is concern on our part about his ability to continue with work at this point if he's not completing jobs. >> the company has been stripped of its license for letting its workers compensation insurance expire and for failing to pay a $3,700 small claims judgment. winco has since paid that judgment and said it's in the process of renewing its worker's comp insurance. the spokesman for the f mily-run business told us he takes full responsibility for the half-completed work. quote, we should have gotten it done. i'm not going to dispute that, close quote. he says, as soon as he gets his license back, he will complete the work. some of his customers say they have heard these types of promises before. >> you know, they are laughing, they are laughing with our money right now. all we want is our backyard done so we can share this home with our family. we will stay on top of this and let you know if there are

cam looking back toward the bay bridge in the city. notice the fog rolling on in. yes, expect patchy fog along the coast. and that should burn off too later on this afternoon. and a leave doppler 7 hd a little busy this morning, a tracting light precipitation as we head toward the north bay, around fairfield and as you head out toward the sacramento valley. that's the trend throughout the morning hours. again around napa we had a pretty good thunderstorm brew in your area a couple hours ago. everything is kind of winding down for the most part as you head further north just south of clear lake you see light precipitation, also toward hercules and berkeley as well. hit-or-miss shower activity through the morning hours. a wider view here. as we head toward gilroy, light precipitation. we will zoom in toward the south bay, morgan hill, gilroy perhaps light activity going on precipitation-wise. otherwise the temperatures not bad out there. we are in the mid-60s in concord, and 58 in oakland.

good morning to you. san francisco 57. san rafael 57 degrees. napa, you are at 61. the weather highlights, again, light showers, isolated thunderstorms mainly through the early morning hours. i think by this afternoon things will start to clear out. and areas of fog along the coast. certainly going on right now. then we will clear things off for sunday and monday and all of next week looking beautiful. temperatures will cool off a little bit. it's downright hot the past few weeks and temperatures will cool off in the 90s, lower 90s up to the north and 80s for the most part. head out to san francisco for the food festival going on today. looking pretty good. temperatures will be in the 60s. and folson street between 21st and 25th street throughout this afternoon, 11:00 to 7:00. check that out. a lot of great activities all around the bay area today. it won't be a total washout. a hit-or-miss shower through the morning hours as we tap into a stream of moisture from the south. area of low pressure off the coast. high pressure off toward the east. maybe amounts breezy by the

katie couric's new show launches right here on abc7 on september 10th but she and her staff already in full production mode. abc7 news anchor carolyn johnson went to new york this week for a one-on-one interview for a interview with the host of the new talk show called "katie i. >> what's the biggest challenge now as you go forward in the last days. >> i think learning to work in a whole new venue. i had people out on the plaza when i did the today show but to have people staring at you the whole team you are doing a show. and i get a agree amount of energy from the audience and they are so nice and enthusiastic, but it takes some getting used to. sometimes when there's a commercial break i feel like i should be entertaining them or sing or juggle or tell a joke because i'm just standing there waiting for the light to go on and they are sitting there. i feel like, gosh, what should i

be doing? so i'm just getting adjusted to having a studio audience. i think that's the biggest difference. and also just having an hour show where i'm the only person, you know. on the "today show" i had colleagues that i worked with every single day. on the evening news it was 22 men's but it was very kind of structured. you know, one story after the other and very little cross talk with correspondents. but this is a whole hour. and to figure out how much i can get in and i want it really to be packed with information so it's challenging. because you still have to pick, you know, the things that you are willing to leave out because 44 minutes, which is what an hour show is, is also slightly limited when you are tackling a big subject. >> is the idea that you are going to stay where one subject per show or might you be mixing it up or is it still a work in progress? >> i think the answer is c, a work in progress. but the show will be as long ago

the subject or the individual requires. if hillary clinton wants to come in and talk about her experiences as secretary of state, aim not going to be like coming up next, divorce stats or whatever. obviously she has plenty to talk about. but there are some topics and maybe some interviews that can be done well in less time. so i think it really is going to be dictated by the topic and the person who is going to be on that particular show. sometimes we will have two segments, sometimes we will have three different subjects. so i think we will see how it plays out. >> katie debuts september 10th right here on abc7. the show will air weekdays at 3:00 p.m. coming up next, a pair of new arrivals being celebrated in china. why researchers have had to step in to save one of the panda
