developing news a massive wildfire is threatening homes in northern california. good evening. i'm ama dates. alan wang has the night off. the fire is? shasta near manton singleton and viola. lilian kim is here as crews fight this blaze. lilian? >> ama, firefighters are dealing with tough conditions. this firefighter is burning 170 miles north of sacramento in a rugged area of thick forest. firefighters only have the fire 5 percent contained. they say the flames picked up today. so far the fire burning along the shasta line has burned 19 square miles and threatening about 3,000 homes near manton, single town and viola.

our sister station krcr described the scene out ground. >> chaotic. there are people wonner didding what is going on and if their house is okay and if their pets are okay. people don't have any place to go. >> many families were us chaed because of the on coming flames. he made sure his family fled in time. he, however, barely made it. his arm is now bandaged up. zachary's arm was on fire as he tried to escape on his atv. >> i was on the road and there are flames on the road and i looked up and it was like i was in a black box. i just drove through it. i couldn't breathe. there was fire everywhere like you turn around and it was on all sides of you. >> a thousand firefighters are battling the flames. seven homes have been destroyed and zachary pritchard's house is one of

them. >> we go up there and it is a part of my life, but it is gone. there is nothing i can do about it. >> the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but fire officials say it started after a series of lightning strikes in the area. ama? >> thank you for the update. right now hundreds of homes in eisenhower are under evacuation -- are under an evacuation order near boise. the smoke is causing a huge problem. thick clouds are reducing visibility to less than 10 feet and slowing down firefighters. the 88,000 acre wildfire has been burning for two weeks now. and in washington state residents find smoldering rubble. a fire burning 75 miles east of seattle has scorched dozens of homes. tonight it is just 43% contained. a brushfire on 280 near san jose burned five acres before it was controlled. look at some photos from the fire from the abc7 viewer. the fire began just after 3:00 p.m. no homes or businesses were

damaged, and it was put out by about 5:00. in vallejo, for the third time, a vai president cay building -- vacant buildings went up in flames. it happened in a vai president cay army supply store around 7:00 this morning. this was the third fire on couch street. the last fire was right next door. investigators say there are indications that people were inside the building before the fire started. no comment from the giants about their latest scandal. melky cabrera was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a substance. john has more, john? >> and ama, a new investigation is underway. the daily news says the feds are looking at cabrera's circle of associates to see where he obtained the illegal testosterone. >> guides one to left.

and a search sunday for one gunman. san jose police say the shooting happened around 9:00 tonight on east san antonio street near south king road. the victim is suffering potentially life-threatening injuries. and the san jose police are investigating the city's 28 homicides of the year after a man was shot to death early this morning. it happened around 5:15 on the 3000 block. police say the victim died at the scene. right now they have nomo tiff, and they say the gunman took off before officers arrived. there is now a manhunt for that suspect. smie the suspended san francisco sheriff is taking exception to those who said he should have apologized for his domestic violence incident. they left the office of his wife's attorney this afternoon. last week the ethics commission found he indeed committed official misconduct when he grabbed his wife's arm. he spoke this morning on kgo radio. >> the ethics commissioner asked why didn't i just apologize 1234* i wasn't allowed to. i was saddled through a whole

game on monday against the mid-atlantic team from new jersey. the game airs on espn. as a new school year begins california is launching the first new grade level in more than a century. more than 800 school districts are expected to offer the first year of a two-year kindergarten. the transitional kindergarten is for those with birthdays in the fall that are too young for cutoff. the eligible age is moving up three months to five years old by september 1st. it is phasing in a month at a time over three years. the school year -- this school year there will be fewer students at public high schools. they have about 500 fewer 9th graders. close to 4100 compared to the 4600 enrolled last year. the district will receive less money from the state. today's chronicle reports while there is a decline in 9th grade enrollment, there is an increase in the number in kindergarten and 6th grade classes.

east bay. i am telling you, you have been just baking out there for about a week and a half now. finally you are going to get some of that relief coming up this workweek. you can kind of see where it is coming from. we have low clouds and fog. this is from the camera on top of our studio here at -- near the embarcadero in san francisco. and you can barely see a little bit of the top of the bay bridge. the tower is the ceiling where the cloud deck is starting to lower a little bit. we will turn your attention to live doppler 7hd. we were talking about the fires that broke out across our state. we had numerous lightning strikes and you can see the live doppler 7hd is showing that most of the moisture has moved on out. as we head into monday night and tuesday though, the wind is going to pick up. the higher terrain there, and that's going to result in some extremely low relative humidity levels. a fire weather watch has been posted for much of the sierra

range and extending out toward the north. excuse me the northeastern portion of the state and that's through much of tuesday with very strong winds. and there is the potential with the dry, relative humidity and the dry air mass we could possibly see some of the fires spreading and/or possibly even starting some more. here is a look at live doppler 7hd. we have fog near the coast, and that will start to move back inland overnight. it is 53 in san francisco. compare that to antioch which is still quite warm at 77 degrees. 62 in concord and 59 with some clear skies in mountain view. we will look for low areas of cloud and fog. the mist and drizzle near the coast. slightly cooler innd la for our monday and then a gradual cooling trend will be with us throughout our workweek. lows tonight 60s inland and 50s at the coast where the fog will sit. and tomorrow morning as you get out the door, it will be overcast.

by noontime we should start to see temperatures climbing into the 70s inland and by 4:00 90 inland. by 7:00 the fog will move back in and we will cool things off. low pressure to the north and east of us. this will have to cool us down by midweek with increasing low clouds near the coast and a stronger sea breeze. cooler air mass will start to move inland across much of the bay area. highs tomorrow are down into the 70s. 78 for san jose. campbell is 80 degrees. a little more comfortable, 62 for half moon bay with a mixture of sun and clouds. 74 palo alto. san francisco tomorrow 64 degrees. in the north bay, santa rosa 80. oakland tomorrow will warm to 70 degrees there. we will look for union city 75 and interior east bay, this is what i'm talking about, heat related and 85 for concord and 87 for livermore and santa cruz, 75 degrees. we will cool things off the

the offer asks for a $3 donation to enter. tomorrow he will hit the trail and then he goes to yow yoy and then new york where he will talk to voters. gas prices prices are sky rocketing after the chevron refinery fire. prices are up 30 cents in a month. but how high will prices go? there are signs tonight that we just might be nearing a peak. here is ron claiborne. >> if you think today's gas prices are high, just wait until tomorrow. >> we are not driving as much and doing as much. >> some states are seeing record spikes in the price at the pump. in california an average of $4.10, up 27 cents in just two weeks. in oregon the price of a gallon is up 29 cents. it is the peak summer driving season when high demand normally pushes up gas prices, but that alone doesn't account for what is happening. added to the mix, refinery problems and aging pipelines breaking down.

away from the launch of katie couric's new show. abc7 news anchor traveled to new york to interview katie on the set of her new afternoon talk show. she has already started taping, and she admits getting used to a studio audience is a bit of a challenge. >> welcome to "the indicate tooy show." to "the katie show." >> by the time i sat down with katie on her new set, she taped two shows that day. production is well underway. >> have you already locked in some of your dream guests? >> we have some exciting people coming on the show. how is that for a tease? we have a lot of people -- you know, the most heartening thing is when people say they love to come on the show, and they are not taking a wait and

we are three weeks away from the opening kickoff of the 2012 nfl season. now, that doesn't give the raider head coach much time to get his team up to speed. it is also the final two weeks for young players like former san jose state line backer to prove that he belongs on the roster. carl who is undrafted had a big strip that lead to a touchdown against the cardinals. he will make his living on special teams and practice on the scout team. he was an allstar in college, but like all youngsters he is a student once again. >> trying to be like a sponge out there. i am in my head coach's ear and my position coach. i was always asking them, how can i improve on this?
