eric thomas. >> welcome back eric. i'm kristen sze. a search is underway for a missing jet skier. the coast guard is launching a helicopter to resume the search. no word on the missing man's name. he is from san jose. he was last seen yesterday by friends in the water in front of their house. we are continuing to work on getting more information. we'll bring you the latest information as soon as we get it. developing news in shasta where firefighters are battling a 12,000 acre wildfire that has already destroyed seven homes and forced thousands to evacuate. this morning it is only 5% contained. the ponderosa fire broke out -- lilian kim reports. >> reporter: firefighters only have this fire 5% contained. so far, this fire burning

sides. >> reporter: about 1,000 firefighters are battling the flame. so far, seven homes destroyed. zachary's house was among them. >> ranch house we go up there every weekend it has been part of my life. it was gone, nothing can i could do about it. >> reporter: lilian kim, abc7 news. a man is hospitalized in san jose with life-threatening injuries latest victim of the city's recent rash of gun violence. he was found last night 9:00 near highway 101. police say the shooter or shooters left before they got there. investigators are hoping to hear from any possible witnesses. san jose police also investigating the city's 28th homicide of the year. a man found shot to death early yesterday morning around 5 a.m.. the victim died at the scene. no motive, no suspect description. at the top of the hour, katie marzullo will have a live report the recent

outbreak of violence in the bay area's largest city. also in san jose vigil planned at 7:00 tonight for a homeless murder victim. the woman some called the screaming lady was killed by a man with a short samurai style sword last monday night she was usually seen on the sidewalk where the vigil is planned for. authorities are still trying to identify the woman who rejected offers of help from some who saw her regularly. police arrested 37-year-old marcus reynolds. investigators think squatters are to blame for a fire that gutted a building in vallejo. firefighters found the vacant army supply store in flames yesterday. the third fire on that street in a machine. the last fire was next door. investigators say there are indications people were in the building before the fire started.

major league baseball welcomes the new federal criminal investigation into melky cabrera's doping scandal. he has been suspended for 50 games. we are learning new information that the all-star game mvp tried to avoid the suspension by creating a fake website as part of his cover story to claim he unknowingly purchased a banned drug online before testing positive for synthetic testosterone. investigators uncovered the scheme, a co-author of game of shadows about the barry bonds scandal says the revelation left him no choice but to own up. >> was backed into a corner when he issued his apology. from the chronology it looked like baseball found him out about the web >> it going to be a consultant hired by his agents admitting

nasa's rover has zapped its first martian rock. the rover has been checking out instruments, including a laser during target practice yesterday curiosity fired 30 laser pulses over 10 seconds at a rock and a small hole in that rock. controllers will command the rover to take first short drive the two year mission is aimed at determining whether the martian environment is -- was habitable. two san francisco 7th graders are happy to be starting school today after a harrowing ordeal over the weekend. they were at a family outing at the candlestick point recreation area saturday afternoon. they got in a rowboat to get a football that landed in the water. the boat started taking on water as they tried to get
