yesterday in the 50s bright by noon and breezy by 4:00 upper 70s to mid 80s. oakland police pinpointed the problem with their radio system that lead to a partial shutdown during a recent visit by president obama. terry mcsweeney joins us live. cell phones are part there to blame? >> reporter: they are. if you don't have any cell phones you don't need cell phone towers if the towers interfering about the police ability to talk to one another which cell phone towers and where? you have probably seen some of these cell phone towers they are everywhere they've been inter fearing with police communications not a new problem, the system had a problem since it was put in a year ago. during president obama's visit to oakland's fox theater last month many of the 100 officers assigned to protect him and handle the protesters outside

reported problems with the radio system. now lots of cell phone towers unsuspicion. oakland public safety systems adviser david cruz spoke with abc7 news. >> we are certainly looking at cell sites that are surrounding oakland emeryville, berkeley all areas that can potentially surgeon us within our geographic area. >> reporter: -- surround us within our geograph fix area. >> reporter: right now it is a matter of man ticks. oakland says 16 towers have been shutdown at&t says it has not shutdown any sites but temporarily suspended operation. 3g and 4g networks are not impacted. oakland looking elsewhere to see where cell phone sites are that are interfering with the police officers' ability to talk to another police officer until they are all identified and the system fixed the investigation continues. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news.

the san francisco board of supervisors is expected to decide as early as next month whether ross mirkarimi will lose or keep his job. mayor ed lee says he's hopeful the supervisors will follow the lead of the city's ethics commission according to the chronicle, lee says the commission reached the right decision last week when it phone mirkarimi engaged in official misconduct. closing arguments set to begin today in the patent trial between apple and samsung both have tried to pain the other as the bad guy in the smartphone and tablet war. apple accused samsung of pirating technology. samsung argued smartphones and tablets are original and part of an industry wide evolution in technology. the jury's verdict could bring a multi-billion dollar penalty. a bill that would keep your boss from asking for your password has cleared a key hurdle. california senate passed the

measure unanimously on a 37-0 vote yesterday, the sponsor introduced the bill based on complains that employers were asking for employee passwords so bosses could check their social media pages for answers to questions that they couldn't ask legally. the bill goes back to the assembly for a vote on minor changes. a bill to let some prisoners appeal life without parole sentences heading to the governor's desk. senator leland ye of san francisco has been pushing for the bill which would apply to those who did not torture anyone or kill a police officer. 300 offenders could be eligible to ask the cores to change their sentence to include the possibility of parole. governor brown has not tan a public position on the bill. troubled san onofre nuclear plant in southern california getting ready to lay-off hundreds of employees. edison runs the plant in san diego county the company says 730 people will lose

their jobs. the decision to make the lay-offs follows two year study that look at similar plants and their operations. san onofre has been closed since january ongoing repairs made to the tubes that carry radioactive water. central valley's slaughterhouse shutting down this morning a video surfaced showing cows getting shocked and shot. animal rights group sent the video of the meat company to the agriculture department. it is a major slaughterhouse south of fresno. the company tells us a newspaper it has not seen the video nor does it know who took the pictures. the slaughterhouse is cooperating with the government's investigation. the world's best sailors will race some of the fastest boats on the globe in san francisco bay starting today, kickoff to the america's cup world series. they were practicing yesterday eight teams taking part with a total of 11 boats. the 45 foot catamarans with 70

traffic as you get closer to the scene of this crash. on north 101 and it is on the shoulder, we'll keep you posted. the other slow spot this morning, you can guess what they are, westbound 580 through the pass, 22 miles an hour, highway 4 antioch slowest, 16 miles per hour, lone tree out towards loveridge. good morning. start off by talking about the winds and how fast they are gusting 23 miles per hour concord out of the south and coming out of the west in fairfield gusting up to nearly 40 miles per hour you have a stout sea breeze coming in, temperatures going to be changing for the cooler this afternoon. going to be harder to get rid of that cloud cover this morning. by the afternoon hours sunshine inland, east bay valleys mid 80s, 70s south bay, 70s to near 80 north bay, lingering clouds around san francisco and trying to work towards oakland and berkeley in the afternoon.

waking up to a tough morning for best buy. second quarter earnings are out this morning in the nation's biggest consumer electronics chain reporting a 90% drop in net income. weak sales and cost of restructuring are being blamed. one day after it named a travel company exec as its new ceo and president. best buy halting stock buy backs for the 2013 fiscal year shares fell almost 10% on the news. the company said it everyoned 12 million dollars or four cents a share in the second quarter compared to 34 cents a share previously. also, we are finding out about a new lawsuit that claims travel websites conspired with hotels to fix room prices and charge customers more. travelers from chicago and iowa file the suit yesterday at federal court in san francisco. the suit claims hotel changes fixed prices with with sites.

the suit is asking for unspecified damages as well as an end to the price fixing. military drill in japan looked like a scene from a hollywood movie. new video into the newsroom overnight soldiers jumping -- rappelling out of military helicopters, tanks -- rappeling this happened near the foot ofmont fuji. japanese officials says the -- [ unintelligible ] powerful storms are once again moving into arizona and bringing along a familiar sight, a wall of blowing dust reduced visibility is cross phoenix yesterday in some areas only down to a quarter mile people in the area are calling it monsoon monday the storm brought heavy rain, hail and wind. our sister station reports the storm ripped off the roof of at least one mobile home. residents are expected to survey the damage this morning.

on 101 it may have started with the fatal accident. this is footage of this fatal crash where a car hit a power pole knocked the pole but didn't take the wires down pg&e crews at the scene. everything the shoulder, north 101 past atherton avenue near the dumbs, "sig alert" issued because it did block right lane. the newest "sig alert" just came in the last minute or two from chp due to an accident nearby southbound 101 near the dumps, four-car injury crash in the center divide. with the waze traffic app, i told you about how drivers reported heavy traffic approaching the scene and it turns out there is an injury crash just a little down the road by the dumps. we'll keep you posted on this accident. it shows 47 miles an hour, i' noticing that some traffic spotters are getting stuck in the back-up. we will track the drive times

highway 12 to highway 37, that is 34 minutes. no northbound delays due to that earlier fatal accident. i'll show you video in my next report. 6:32 now. thousands are expected to crowd into san francisco's marina green for warm-up races in the america's cup world series. katie marzullo joins us with a preview. >> reporter: the action of the america's cup world series gets underway in a couple of hours. we know at 10:00, san francisco mayor ed lee as well as the sailors will make themselves available for comments and then the 45 foot catamarans hit the water 1:00 this morning. we have video to show you of practice rounds in the bay over the weekend. there are 11 teams from eight countries participating. today is official practice but then official racing begins tomorrow. if the past is any indication it is going to be a very

america's cup world series schedule and a map showing the best places to see from it. go to abc7news.com click on see it on tv. gang violence continues to take a big toll in san jose police have two more shootings to investigate, one fatal. six people have been murdered in the past seven days. police were called to this scene around 6:30 last night they found a 24-year-old man woundedded he died at the hospital. 7 lawyer think another scene two mile as 20-year-old man expected to survive that one. police are not sure if the two are connected. federal investigators still keeping an eye on chevron's richmond refinery as hydrocarbons continue to leak following that fire. you can see water still sprayed on the leaking pipe to keep from it igniting again. the chemical safety board and cal-osha won't be able to closely examine the pipe and insulation until it is capped. >> priority right now is to

bagram airfield outside kabul during his visit to the country he was not near the plane at . he has left the country it is not clear if he left on the same plane that was damaged in the rocket attack. also new, a train hauling coal derailed near baltimore killing two. crews say the two were on the tracks but were not employees. their identities have not been released. one woman in her 20s, 21 cars on the 80 car train flipped around midnight in ellicott city, maryland. the accident spilled tons of coal, unclear what caused the derailment. swimmer diana nyad has been pulled out of the water ending her fourth try. she was on target to become the first person to complete the swim without a shark cage she hoped to reach key west, florida by wednesday, her 63rd

birthday. her crew was on the phone with "good morning america" this morning when they made the decision to stop, they said she had severe sunburn and her lips and tongue were swollen from jellyfish stinks. on a day when his political future might be decided congressman akin running for senate airing new advertisement apologizing again for his comments that women can somehow prevent pregnancy after a legitimate rape. republicans have until this 5 p.m. eastern to convince him to end his senate bid and let somebody else run in his place. hard to find anyone supporting him after his remarks but he's trying to save his campaign with this new ad. i'm todd akin and i approve this message. rape is an evil act i used the wrong words in the wrong way for that i apologize. >> akin won the gop nomination to take on claire mccaskill considered one of the most vulnerable in her party.
