detectives on the scene where a man was found stabbed in the safe way on story road good evening. i'm dan ashley. carolyn johnson has the night off. this is the city's seventh murder in the pass week. a surge in street cop crime is compelling one assemblywomen to demand the police chief call in reinforcements to stop it. let's get straight to abc7 news reporter low uh-huh mean gulezian live with the latest on the breaking story. >> dan, this is the seventh homicide in eight days. the victim was found in the safeway store behind me stabbed to death. the victim is a man in his

20s. the suspect got away. this death comes after what the police chief called a very bloody week. >> this is san jose's 31st homicide on story road in the safeway store. and it happened in the center of former san jose city council woman nora compass' district. she is a state assembly person, and she is taking action. compose sent this letter to the police chief asking him to admit he needs help curbing the rising crime rate. >> i am not content to sitcom for the blee while homicide is in my district and continues to be a headline. >> campos wants him to look to the highway patrol for support. the department staffing levels are down while homicides are up. >> i am not opposed to that just yet. >> they plan to make changes first by adding 28 to 45 more

officers to the streets next month. and focusing on gangs. they call the letter premature, councilman sam lacardo calls it something else. >> it is a political gimmick. >> he doesn't think bringing in the chp makes any sense. >> it is a traj dough that they might only work if you can convince these gang members to get in their cars and exceed the speed limit on the freeways. >> members of the downtown association disagree. the non-profit made up of business and property owners wants more police presence. they are telling the off duty police officers to patrol the area. >> we have had complaints from clients who don't want to come to the area. they don't feel secured. >> we have additional resources being offered. let's put them to work. >> all we know about the suspect is he is in his 20s wearing dark clothes. there is surveillance video that police officers are reviewing at this hour. they do say they will be out

here on the scene through the night. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> lisa, thanks very much. we have developing news in the mountains north of sacramento where two huge wildfires continue to burn out of control. a 79 square mile fire threatens 900 homes in and around the pumas national forest while 3500 homes are in the pathway of a fire near the shasta county line. and governor brown sent troops to battle the shasta blaze. it claimed 50 buildings including at least seven homes. cal fire got a break today when gusting winds shifted directions giving firefighters a chance to reinforce their lines. but evacuation orders are still in affect in manton and shingletwn and viola. >> when it is all over, this place will be standing here.

we got out what was important. >> the fire is 40% contained. the pumas fire is 45% contained. cal fire issued mandatory evacuations for the cavelo area because of two wildfires burning nearby. lightning strikes started the fires this weekend. 6400 acres burned so far. the fire is just 10% contained so they will chew up more land before this is over. about 4500 homes are threatened. another developing story, this one near seattle. the secret service says a man sent an e-mail threatening the president to a general fbi mailbox. agents claim the man .ed .ed a shotgun at them when they went to his home to talk with him. a search of his home turned up two weapons authorities say, but no bombs. our sister station in seattle reports the 31-year-old suspect served in the military. he will appear in court tomorrow afternoon. a driver is dead following

a fiery crash in martinez. a horrible scene. an suv rear-ended a car that had stalled on highway four after the driver lost control and hit a guardrail. the collision sent the car down an embankment where you can see and it split in half and burst into flames killing the driver. still not identified at the moment. two of the four people in the suv were hospitalized. no word on the extent of their injuries. the highway patrol is handling the investigation. the sheriff will open a center for those affected by the refinery fire. it will be in the north richmond community heritage senior apartments which is on fred jackson way. people can file injury and damage claims at the center from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow through saturday. saturday is the last day you can submit claims at chevron's other help center. that one is located at the nevin community center. we have both addresses listed on our website if you need to get there.

park. and in the assignment 7 report, take a closer look. >> since the 1920s, motorcyclists have been visiting this area in the hills between livermore and tracy to ride the steep terrain, canyons and trails. the state took over the carnegie recreation area in the 1960s. >> when you are out here you feel like you are out of the city. it is a great feeling. >> but it can get congested out here. on a busy day as many as 700 off-road enthusiasts ride 1300 acres of trails and roads of the hoping to reduce the congestion, the state paid $7.8 million in the late 1990s to expand on adjacent land. it bought 3,000 acres including the remanence of an old coal mining town called tessla. >> this new expansion will allow us to continue to work to provide programs that will actually help with the cultural and natural resources

and protection and providing high quality recreation. >> the plan calls for new hiking paths and designated trails for the off-road use that would be largely invisible for people looking up the hillside. but some environmentalists environmentalists and some neighbors balk at the idea of turning the hillside into anything but open space. they are with friends of tissla park -- tessla, pa. >> we have a chance to save this future land. >> they say tessla is an important part of history. in fact, it is home to native american artifacts and it was used by span fish settlers as trail to san francisco bay. >> we cannot allow the damage that occurred at carnegie scra to invade into this wonderful pristine park land. >> she lives next to the recreation vehicle area. her family has been here since the 18 -- 1870s. >> do you see that rut, for

weather? they need wind out there on the bay. sandhya patel is here with the forecast. >> breezy enough out on the bay for the sales to get going. good looking weather. i will have a detailed forecast in a moment. here is the view from the east bay hills camera from this afternoon. did you check this out today? we saw midand high level clouds moving in. it gave us a beautiful sky. let's check out live doppler 7hd, and we'll show you what it looks like from that perspective. don't have the high clouds anymore. we are dealing with low clouds and fog. as you can see near the coast, this is all going to fill in as we head in toward the morning hours. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. antioch, a mild reading at 74 degrees. fog, low clouds and patchy drizzle that includes your morning commute. below normal high temperatures tomorrow, and we are going to go with the mild pattern. if you are already looking to the weekend there is change coming your way. tonight we will see the fog filling in out toward the delta. 5:00 a.m. when many of you

head out the door. we will be dealing with widespread gray. the fog will drop visibility in some spots with some drizzle. just give yourself some more time. low 50s to low 60s. as you send your kids off to school, if you have kids, bundle them up. it will be on the cool side and murky first thing in the morning. it is an area of low pressure as you look at the water vapor imagery. and this area of low pressure is deepening our marine layer. as it heads south it will trigger thunderstorms in southern california and parts of california into nevada as the low moves into southern california. there are red flag warnings up for tomorrow for southern california and for the southeastern portion of california and northern nevada. concern of flooding with heavy rains. obviously this will be an area of concern as we head into tomorrow afternoon and evening just in case you are traveling. the temperatures tomorrow afternoon, a little bit lower
