the scene since 4:30 this morning. those students who had to be evacuated, are they back yet? >> reporter: they are. they are back inside, a little shakey after all of this has happen. some tell me they think it is going to be hard to fall back asleep. i'm standing where it happened. you can see now happened, there's the tire park -- tire marks where the car jumped the curb then headed straight for the dorm. that's where there was a gas meter, sheared off the top of it, causing all kinds of concerns here for officials. came to rest at putnam hall didn't crash into it. officials were worried enough to evacuate the whole building. here's a shot of the car before it was toed away. it crashed at college and ch ning, before 3:00 in the -- college and ch anning, some were -- officials did decide

are continuing to follow one block from the uc berkeley campus this morning students had to be evacuated from a dorm i have an car crashed into and severed -- dorm crashed into and severed a gasline. >> reporter: i just spoke with the sergeant the driver has been charging with driving under the influence and hit-and-run that could lane why he jumped this curb at about 3:00 in the morning, crashed into the gas meter over here next to putnam and came to a rest at the eight story dormitory. students tell me it was a scary experience. they heard it, they didn't know what happened this is here in b officials decided to evacuate the dormitory because they wanted to figure out if it was safe for students to stay. they wanted pg&e to turn the gas off.

fill feel shakey they have been allowed back into their dorm they have classes starting tomorrow. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. developing story from the south bay, this morning san jose police investigating the city's 7th homicide in eight days. the latest victim, a man in his 20s found stabbed inside a safeway store. it occurred 8:30 last night on story and south white road in east san jose police are not sure where the stabbing took place but the victim wound up dying in the center aisle of the store. investigators have been talking with witnesses to get a better description of the suspect all they have is he was wearing dark clothing. chevron will open a new center to assist people affected by this month's refinery fire. contra costa county leaders shop for a better system to notify people of such

emergencies in the future. the new center will open 9:00 this morning at the north richmond community heritage senior apartments on fred jackson way it will be open until 7:00 in the evening. people can file claims through saturday the last day to file a claim. contra costa county supervisors plan to replace the company that provides reverse 911 telephone alerts it took more than three hours to notify 18,000 people near the refinery to shelter-in-place. the company warns supervisors switching companies won't necessarily improve performance because all systems redial calls that don't get answered. new poll of voters finds 2/3 of people surveyed think suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi should be removed from office. the chronicle reports in a poll of 500, 61% said he should be removed from office, 31% said no, 8th weren't sure.

-- 8% weren't sure. we are continuing to follow developing news out of shasta and tehama counties the ponderosa wildfire putting up a fight, growing and threateningmore homes. state reinforcements have been sent to help. katie marzullo with the latest. >> reporter: governor brown has committed national guard troops to assist firefighters and fema is offering federal money. at least 50 structures have been destroyed, probably morrical fire doesn't know how many of those structures are homes. the fire is threatening maybe 3500 morehouses and multiple neighborhoods under -- more houses and multiple neighborhoods are unevacuation orders. yesterday, a dc-10 was brought in to drop retard to keep the fire spreading to the highway. it is an uphill battle for firefighters on the ground.
