>> in the news this sunday morning, august 26th, the federal and national all-stars will play panama at 8:00 this morning in a consolation game of a falling in yesterday's u.s. championship game. and forecasters say tropical storm isaac is gaining strength and should be at or near hurricane force when it reaches the florida keys later today. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a first quick look ata weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning, everyone. temperatures mainly in the 50s. we have mist and drizzle at our cost. we are looking at a late clearing today. the fog pretty thick, 2500 feet,

and we're looking at it until about noontime. east bay will clear out first. notice the temperature spread. 60s with the fog cling to go the coast. only some 80s well inland. today will be the coolest day this week. we will begin to rebound slightly with numbers coming up a little bit throughout the early part of the work week and we will see for fog hanging at the coast. we will have the details coming up. carolyn. >> sounds good. thank you, lisa. in a few hours petaluma will play panama for third place in the little league world series. yesterday the team lost to tennessee but not before an amazing come back. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman was at the game at williamsport, pennsylvania, and he has reaction from the petaluma players and their families. >> for most twelve-year-old kids the concept of single elimination might seem foreign but not if they play baseball in petaluma. >> it has been amaze.

pennsylvania, abc7 news. >> and we are proud, too, despite the loss of frenzy of hometown pride erupted at a packed movie theater in petaluma where hundreds were watching the game. and john alston was there. >> it didn't matter they had just lost. the petaluma team got a round of applause for putting on a thrilling show that included a jaw-dropping come-from-behind rally. >> had a real good feeling about it but even having seen all the things they have done, it was remarkable. the only words that could come out of my mouth were, oh, my god. i kept saying it over and over again because i was shocked. >> five hundred fans filled the threeters to watch the team. trailing 15-5 with only a half inning left, petaluma exploded with ten runs to evening the score. contributing to the effort was

kempton brandis, who hit a homer. >> i had faith they could do it. they have pulled off things like that owe it was good. >> what an inning. i couldn't believe they came back from that far down. it was awesome. unbelievable. fun to watch. >> outside the theater nervous fans gathered around a tv on a police mobile command unit, and while they would have preferred a different outcome, they went into the game with a different perspective. >> even if they lose, they are the third or fourth best in all of the world so they still did very well. >> instead of a world series championship game, the boys will have a consolation game, and after they get home they will have a parade on september 2nd. in petaluma, abc7 news. so the consolation game is against panama today. you can watch it starting at 8:00 this morning on our sister station, espn. this morning tropical storm isaac is getting closer to u.s.

right now it's entering the florida straits after passing over cuba. it is predicted to strengthen into a hurricane by the time it hits the coast later today. the governor has declared a state of emergency. the monster storm is also putting a damper on the republic national convention in tampa. the gop party is now delaying the bulk of its convention due to the severe weather expected from tropical storm isaac. the convention will officially convene tomorrow, but then immediately go into recess until tuesday. meanwhile a contingent of bay area volunteers is headed toward the storm. they gathered her travel gear before hopping on a cross-country flight to florida. she's one of the 26 value tears that will be part of the red cross response to tropical storm isaac. >> i want to help people, and it's not just giving them what

they need at the time, right? it's something that they can use to move forward. >> they are going to three staging areas, miami, tampa and orlando. from there it depends on where the storm hits and where the damage is. >> she had been scheduled to leave earlier in the day, but because of a flight delay and packed planes heading to the republican national convention, her departure was pushed back until last night. >> other news this morning oakland police are investigating a double shooting that turned fatal. it happened last night on 85th avenue near birch street. police were first called to the scene around 9:30. officers canvassed the area, looking for the shooter, but no arrests have been reported. one of the two victims died later at a local hospital. in vallejo police are looking for a gunman wanted in connection with a double shooting. police say a man and a woman were shot in front of an apartment building uncaught any

ellen drive. witnesses say the man, woman and her four children were getting into a car when another man wearing a ski mask walked up to the car and started shooting. a neighbor said she heard the gunshots and ran outside to see exactly what was going on. >> he was in all black top to bottom. he even had on a ski mask, all black so we don't know who the shooter was. >> the woman was taken away by ambulance with a gunshot wound to the leg. the man drove himself to the hospital before police arrived. fortunately the children in the car were not hurt. straight ahead, remembering the first man on the moon who made that giant leap for mankind with a single step. we will hear from a friend of neil armstrong. and the america's cup heats up with a rematch today between two oracle yachts. the skipper is upset after a

>> this morning we are remembering neil armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. he died this weekend at age 82 from complications from heart surgery. he was here row when he of commanded the apollo 11 mission in 1969. he described himself as a nerddy engineer. >> it's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

>> with those words astronaut neil armstrong became the first man to step on the moon. he also became a symbol foreman's desire to reach for the stars. an astronaut remembers his apollo teammate with somebody who didn't feel comfortable with the celebrity he received by his accomplishment. >> neil by nature was a reserved and modest guy. very self-effacing, bright. i mean, when you are in a class with him or learning something, neil was right there. he's a very, very sharp guy. >> in 1969 armstrong and his fellow astronaut buzz aldrin spent nearly three hours warning on the moon, collecting samples and conducting experiments. it was a great accomplish plenty. president obama promised a man on the moon by the end of the decade. he was part of and making history. >> this is not a job.

this was, you know, this is history being made and we were very, is very aware of it. >> this is the apollo 11 capsule on the air craft carrier hornet, now berthed in almeda. the warship recovered the capsule after hits trip to the moon. it's now in a museum showcasing it's involvement with the apollo 11 mission. they said everyone here was deeply moved by armstrong's death. >> we are very sad. the whole hornet family is saddened by it. having these displays and the story of what these men accomplished, that will live on forever. >> president obama called neil armstrong one of america's greatest heros, not just of his time, but it had all-time. in alameda, abc7 news. a flight from san francisco was diverted to denver international airport yesterday morning because of an unruly passenger. it happened on a united flight heading to chicago. authorities are not saying exactly what happened, only that the plane had to stop in denver.

it was back on route to chicago about an hour later. fire crews expect to have a huge wildfire in shasta county contained by tomorrow. more than 43 square miles have burned near reading. 64 homes and 20 other buildings have been destroyed. the ponderosa fire is now more than 74% contained. another major fire burning in the natural forrest is now 55% contained. so far it's burned 100 square miles. this morning we are getting our first look at facebook's new menlo park campus expansion. it was designed by world famous architect frank gary. the ten-acre, one-room place is friendly. the building will connect to the existing portion of the menlo park campus through an underground tunnel.

facebook plans to break ground early next year >> the america's cup world series continues on san francisco bay today with two oracle team usa boats racing against each other in the finals. it's pretty exciting so far! >> the collision happened yesterday. this one. it temporarily put one of the oracle boats out of the race. the vessel got banged up pretty bad at the beginning of race number three when it cut the race committee boat. it's since been repaired and it's ready for today's competition. i met the skippers earlier this week, talked 20 jimmy spithill of the oracle team usa. he said our wind and fog are big challenges on the bay. >> don't they know it. in fact, plenty of fog this morning. it's made it's way all the way to the east bay. waking up to 50s and slower clearing this afternoon. today is going to be the coolest day of the week. i'll explain next. >> thank you, lisa. also next a heartbreaking loss

>> welcome back, everyone. it's a:18 on this sunday morning. we are looking at a live picture of the golden gate bridge. not much going on there this early in terms of traffic, but a lot of times on a sunday morning the bridge is shrouded in fog. it looks pretty clear there so far, and lisa argen is joining me right now to tell me if that's the way it's going to be for most of the day. >> usually when we have the big ridge of high pressure we have that dense fog. that ridge is not with us right now so the fog has grown taller. it's moved across the bay. it's there but it's not low on the deck. as we head outside right now it's definitely kind of cool out there. we've had mist and drizzle throughout much of the day along the shoreline. that will be the case once again today. so right now is typical with temperatures in the 50s. don't look for that sunny time soon. in fact, we will be looking at that slow clearing today. so here's a look. right now live doppler 7ld.

the clouds are banked up along the coast, and that will be with us throughout the afternoon. we have the gusty winds toward the delta, as well. so a couple things going on with our area of low pressure that continues to sit offshore. the slow clearing today, the taller marine layer. let's get you caught up on the atlantic. here's a look at tropical storm isaac. it's expected to strengthen within the next 48 hours to a category one hurricane. as it does, it will continue to move to the west-northwest at about 15, 20 miles an hour. keeping it on its track to become a hurricane as it grazes southern florida and then you will notice into the gulf of mexico strengthens a little bit but it is further away from tampa, although certainly heavy rain and the storm surge that will we will be watching carefully. so some nasty weather has moved into florida so far with some very rainy conditions. several inches of rain yesterday. it will become a dicey time of

it. you will notice it will continue to weaken into a tropical depression in the days ahead. 56 in fremont with numbers in the mid-50s up towards the north. with all the fog out there, not much of a spread in our temperatures. that will be the case again for our afternoon highs. even cooler today. look what happens by 11:00. still getting into some hearing. the north bay we are looking at some sunshine. it will take toward the better part of the afternoon. so we will look for the low clouds, the mist and drizzle throughout the bay today, and then the slow clearing this afternoon. a slight warmup comes our way tomorrow into tuesday and wednesday. so look for those numbers perhaps to reach again 90 degrees. today looking at partly sunny conditions. temperatures, i don't think we are even going to make any 80s today. we will have to be content with those upper 70s. yesterday a few mid-80s, but with the dry atmosphere further to the east we are looking at a

red flag warning in effect today for gusty winds out of the southwest. due to that the relative humidity dropping to 5 to 10%. dangerous condition necessary reno. across the state,, they we still have the warmth to the south in fresno, and back home temperatures will remain rather cool at the coast. in fact, some gusty winds here from time too time. knots up to 20. we are looking at temperatures only in the mid-and upper 50s today. so 70s should do it around milpitas today. mid-70 #* 70s. lots of 6 0s on the peninsula. for the giants game numbers in the 50s, breezy winds there. 69 in sonoma. near east bay look for 69 cast tore valley. 64 berkeley. feeling a bit like fall today request 70s out over the hills. down by the monterey bay, 61 there. after a fall-like sunday, a little warmup tomorrow, the main

coming up at 8:00 this morning will the storm over women's issues knock the republicans off course? can mitt romney use the convention to open up a lead in this race? the convention chairs from both parties face-off so don't miss this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 right here on abc7. officials in new york city say the two police officers involved in the shootout near the empire state building had never fired their weapons on duty before. ballistics evidence shows all nine bystanders wounded in friday's incident were shot by the two officers. investigators say the officer opened fire on a gunman who just killed a coworker around the corner from the empire state building. the gunman was killed and three wounded bystanders were hit with bullets, the rest by fragments. even though the claims center is closed dealing with the richmond refinery fire back on august 6th, claims can

still be filed by telephone. chevron said it will continue to maintain their toll-free number after processing 18,000 claims from people who complained of health problems. this is the number on the screen. oakland attorney john burriss said he has more than 3,000 people lined up to seek legal action against chevron. he told people yesterday the fire was preventable. he's trying to bring as many people into possible into the fold to join a claim of gross neglect jennings filed by nine so far. they were offering services at the community rally. tomorrow the first in a series of meet willing update residents on the investigation into the fire. that meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the richmond city council chambers. well, san francisco may not be the biggest city. it doesn't have the highest crime rate, but it does have the

highest paid police chief in the country. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. chief greg sir made more than $321,000 last year, putting him at the top of the heap among the nation's police chiefs. he's also the highest paid department head in san francisco. he's closely followed by san francisco's fire chief, joanne haze had white who took in $310,000 in pay and other compensation. here's how san francisco police chief greg sur compares with charlie beck and new york police chief kelly. they said his salary tops beck's by more than $14,000 last year and he topped kelly's by more than $116,000. coming up, something through to keep your kids busy with on your ipad. a new anderson -- app that combines video game with trading cards. and here's a live look from the

>> welcome back. thank you for getting up this sunday morning. we have a live shot from our emeryville cam showing you i-80 heading towards berkeley. a nice day on tap. the coolest of the week, according to lisa argen, who will be along with the full accuweather forecast coming up. california state university will launch a system-wide online university in 2013 that could expand csu enrollment by 250,000 students. coral state's 23,000 campuses have a total enrollment of 427,000 students. about 50 courses are offered online through individual universities. this new system will provide one common website for all those

this is jack's camp. the taylor family foundation provides this camp for free for children diagnosed with brain tumors. >> who if your family has a brain tumor. >> me. >> my sister. we tried different things for it. it shrunk and grew, and shrunk and grew. >> now my brother has problems with hearing and his brain doesn't work as well but we are happy he survived. >> i'm glad i have a sister. >> the first time i came to camp i met somebody that had the same brain tumor as me and my brain tumor is rare so that's really cool. >> the camp is important because lacey is a survivor ever 11 years. >> it provides such a crucial level of support for these families who are so stressed out by their child's illness. >> there's a support group for the dumps where they talk about the child's inness having a ripple effect on the whole family. >> it's the siblings that are making left with family members or friends while the parents are spending time at the hospital.

it's the financial stress because parents want to be with their child and not be able to be maybe at their jobs, maybe lose their jobs because of it. >> parents don't have to hide their fears here and they can learn from others. >> we first came to camp right before ashley's second surgery. we didn't really know anybody who was going through what we were going through. >> you don't meet families that have someone with a brain tumor every day. >> it was so great. my family has come back every camp since to help other families try to have that same sort of connection. >> we throw around the term extended family a lot around here, but it's really true because our own families will never understand exactly everything that we went through. >> the kids get their own support groups when they aren't running around doing all the activities the camp has to offer. >> we do campfire songs and have smores. >> jack's camp is deeply personal. this lead's son wasn't even three when was diagnosed with multiple brain tumors and she had a new baby besides.

melissa is my niece. >> you get to tell your story to somebody who really understand, where someone doesn't want the short one minute version with the happy ending, they want to know the details. >> mitch's son aden was diagnosed when he was four. his baby brother celebrated his first birthday while aden was recovering from brain surgery. >> it was really difficult for me the first camp listen to all the stars and i think i can't do it anymore, i can't come back. but seeing how much fun and joy that aden has when he comes here and the friends that he has. i said i can't deny him that. >> mitch and i work together at abc7. >> the taylor family foundation was created by mrs. taylor who is related to jack of jack's camp. jack was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age ever 24 and sadly did not survive. but he won't be forgotten thanks to the camp named after him.

success yesterday at oakland's lake merit. the event was the eighth annual breast cancer challenge sponsored by friends of faith. that organization was created in memory of bay area broadcaster fay sancher who died after a long battle with breast cancer. funds from yesterday's walk provides grants to local organizations that help low income, uninsured bay area women and men with breast cancer. lisa, as you know, i'm a founding member of that organization, and we had a big turnout yesterday. maybe 800 or so people. and the weather was just perfect. it was warmer this year than last year. >> did it ever get sunny? >> it did, yes. it was nice. >> yeah. i thought that is good walking weather. in fact, we will put the positive spin on the cool forecast today. as we head outside, plenty of clouds around. you can't see them really from this shot. high definition emeryville camera. but we had the breezy winds into fairfield gusting to 31 miles an

the giants game, it will be breezy and cool this evening. low clouds this morning. then drizzle at the coast. continued cool for today. we will look for the slightly warmer weather headed our way tomorrow into tuesday and wednesday. perhaps even a 90-degree temperature in our outlying areas by midweek. today we call it partly sunny with the slow clearing. temperatures only in the 60s and 70s at best. by brentwood an 80-degree temperature perhaps. despite the low clouds we are looking at a red flag warning today to the sierra nevada to the north will winds will be gusty, 20 to 30 miles an hour and the relative humidity below 10%. if you have friends or family with headed back from the sierra, very, very dry conditions. across the bay then some gusty winds. game time about 5:00. numbers in the upper 50s with chilly readings down throughout the 8:00, 9:00 hours. numbers in the mid-50s.

well, say so long to the hurricane roller coaster at the santa cruz beach boardwalk. today 40 members of the american roller coaster enthusiasts club will take one last ride on the hurricane. it is going to be shut down for good next weekend. the hurricane has been sold. it's going to be dismantled and moved to an amusement park in new mexico after labor day. it will be replaced by a new ride in santa cruz next year. the hurricane has been on the board walk since it replaced the jet star coaster back in 1992. it's china town's turn to host san francisco's sunday streets program this morning at 11:00. that's where city streets are close today traffic so people can walk and enjoy bicycling and other forms of exercise while checking out food and entertainment offered by local venders. it's a free tree vent. it's going to extend from grant avenue along jackson street to washington to the embarcadero until 4:00 this afternoon. it coincides with the second
