>> in the news this sunday morning, august 26th, the petaluma national all-stars mr. play panama after falling in yesterday's championship game. and forecasters say tropical storm isaac is gaining strength and should be at or near hurricane force when it reaches the florida keys later today. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a first quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning, everyone. more mist and drizzle as well as the low clouds all the way into the east bay. here's a look from our roof camera. we are looking at low clearing

today. starting out with the gray and we will take it right through 11:00. you will notice that we still have the fog over into the east bay, the north bay, along the peninsula. so it will take some time. when we do clear, still that sea breeze and some cool temperatures today. in fact, we saw a few 80s yesterday. it will be cooler than that today. so a narrow range with numbers mainly in the 60s and 70s. some brief clearing throughout san francisco throughout the day, but we will be looking at some of these 80s coming back boo the forecast as soon as tomorrow. i'll tell you about that coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. you know in a couple hours petaluma is going to play panama for third place in the little league world series. yesterday the team lost to tennessee, but not before an amazing come back. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman was at the game at williamsport, pennsylvania, and he has reaction from the petaluma players and their families. >> for most twelve-year-old kids the concept of single elimination might seem foreign

but not if they play baseball in petaluma. >> it has been amazing. >> i hope we get past today. >> back home little do they know we are already household names. such is the atmosphere emraced by the kids, coaches and parents this week. >> believe me, i cheer five or six times a day out here. >> who wouldn't. they have been on the road since late june winning tournament after tournament racking up wins. >> 25-3. >> network television and a national television against a team from the southeast. in the first innings petaluma didn't do so well. >> this one to center field. is it deep enough? is it deep enough? yes, it is. >> that's lorenzo butler from tennessee who rewrote record books, hitting three home runs for nine rbis. petaluma came to their last at-bat trailing 15-5. >> top of the sixth inning, down ten runs, it's over, right? >> we have a chance. we are in the game. >> and kathy was, oh, so right.

if it wasn't the greatest little league game ever played it may have been the most epic with the greatest comeback. with two outs, and two strikes, kempton brandis brought them within one run with this swing. i can't enjoy anything else. >> you will never forget it, will you? >> no, i'll never forget it. that's my biggest home run i've ever hit. >> the next batter, smith, two out, the next swing, tied game. >> we came alive. bats woke up and everybody started hitting. >> but this is little league, after all. extra innings were not kind. southeast scored nine runs and put the game away. >> not that anyone could tell by the way the parents greeting their kids. >> he left as a boy and now he's a young man. >> petaluma fell one game short of playing for a world championship, and that hurts for now, but long-term these kids will remember the love. >> i just be proud.

just, you know, that's it. >> at the little league world series in williamsport, pennsylvania, abc7 news. >> great job, guys. and despite the loss, a frenzy of hometown pride erupted at a packed movie theater in petaluma where hundreds were watching the game. abc7 news property john alston was also there. [applause] >> it didn't matter they had just lost. the petaluma team got a round of applause for putting on a thrilling show that included a jaw-dropping come-from-behind rally. >> had a real good feeling about it, but even having seen all the things they have done, it was remarkable. the only words that could come out of my mouth were, oh, my god. i kept saying it over and over again because i was shocked. >> nearly five hundred fans filled the theaters to watch the team. trailing 15-5 with only a half inning left, petaluma exploded with ten runs to even the score.

contributing to the effort was kempton brandis, who hit a two-run homer. his father watched from the theater. >> i had faith they could do it. they have pulled off things like that owe it was good. >> what an inning. i couldn't believe they came back from that far down. it was awesome. unbelievable. fun to watch. >> outside the theater nervous fans gathered around a tv on a police mobile command unit, and while they would have preferred a different outcome, they went into the game with a different perspective. >> even if they lose, they are the third or fourth best in all of the world so they still did very well. >> instead of a world series championship game, the boys will have a consolation game, and after they get home they will have a parade on september 2nd. in petaluma, abc7 news. the consolation game is

against panama today. you can watch it starting at 8:00 this morning on our sister station, espn. this morning tropical storm isaac is getting closer to u.s. right now it's entering the florida straits after passing over cuba. it flooded haiti. at least four deaths are reported there. it is predicted to strengthen into a hurricane by the time it hits the florida coast later today. the governor has declared a state of emergency. the monster storm is also putting a damper on the republic national convention in tampa. the gop party is now delaying the bulk of its convention due to the severe weather expected from tropical storm isaac. the convention will officially convene tomorrow, but then immediately go into recess until tuesday. meanwhile a contingent of bay area volunteers is headed toward the storm. this woman gathered her travel gear before hopping on a

cross-country flight to florida. she's one of the 26 value tears that will be part of the red cross response to tropical storm isaac. >> i want to help people, and it's not just giving them what they need at the time, right? it's something that they can use to move forward. >> they are going to three staging areas, miami, tampa and orlando. from there it depends on where the storm hits and where the damage is. >> she had been scheduled to leave earlier in the day, but because of a flight delay and packed planes heading to the republican national convention, her departure was pushed back until last night. >> in other news this morning oakland police are investigating a double shooting that turned fatal. it happened last night on 85th avenue near birch street. police were first called to the scene around 9:30. officers canvassed the area, looking for the shooter, but no arrests have been reported. one of the two victims died later at a local hospital. in vallejo police are looking for a gunman wanted in

connection with a double shooting. police say a man and a woman were shot in front of an apartment building on kathy allen drive. witnesses say the man, woman and her four children were getting into a car when another man wearing a ski mask walked up to the car and started shooting. a neighbor said she heard the gunshots and ran outside to see exactly what was going on. >> he was in all black top to bottom. he even had on a ski mask, all black, so we don't know who the shooter was. >> the woman was taken away by ambulance with a gunshot wound to the leg. the man drove himself to the hospital before police arrived. fortunately the children in the car were not hurt. straight ahead, remembering the first man on the moon who made that giant leap for mankind with a single step. a bay area friend shares memories of neil armstrong. and the america's cup heats up with a rematch today between two oracle yachts.

described himself as a nerdy engineer. >> "it's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." >> with those words astronaut neil armstrong became the first man to step on the moon. he also became a symbol for man's desire to reach for the stars. an astronaut remembers his apollo teammate as somebody who didn't feel comfortable with the celebrity he received by his accomplishment. >> neil, by nature, was a very reserved and modest guy. very self-effacing, bright. i mean, when you are in a class with him or learning something, neil was right there. he's a very, very sharp guy. >> in 1969 armstrong and his fellow astronaut, buzz aldrin, spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples planting the american flag and conducting experiments. the landing was the most watched television broadcast at the

time. president kennedy promised a man on the moon by the end of the decade. he was part of and making history. >> this is not a job. this was, you know, this is history being made and we were very, very aware of it. >> this is the apollo 11 capsule on the aircraft carrier hornet, now berthed in almeda. the warship recovered the capsule after its trip to the moon. it's now in a museum showcasing it's involvement with the apollo 11 mission. a hornet volunteer said everyone here was deeply moved by armstrong's death. >> we are very sad. the whole hornet family is saddened by it. having these displays and the story of what these men accomplished, that will live on forever. >> president obama called neil armstrong one of america's greatest heros, not just of his time, but of all-time. in alameda, abc7 news. >> the america's cup world series continues on san francisco bay today with two

oracle team boats racing against each other in the final. it's been pretty exciting so far. that bangup happened on friday. it temporarily put one of the oracle boats out of the race. the veeset got banged up pretty bad at the beginning of race number three when it struck the race committee boat. it has since been repaired and is ready for today's competition. they said be prepared for collisions and cap sizing because of conditions on the bay. by the way, the races start at 11:45. >> yeah consideration and it will be a breezy day out there. temperatures just in the 50s. it looks like summer still taking a break from the bay area as we head outside right now. high definition emeryville camera. clouds around, temperatures mid-and upper 50s. clouds all the way into our east bay valley. slower clearing today and a cooler afternoon. your forecast is next. >> thank you, lisa.

>> lisa keeps reminding me we have lots of days ahead with nice, sunny weather but not starting out with one today. >> no. we are talking about a much bigger storm on the east coast. of course, that's tropical storm isaac that will soon become a hurricane. we will talk about that in a moment. but as we head outside we are looking at the low clouds, the fog from mount tam. in fact, this is the way much of the bay area looks. the higher elevations really allowing for the breezy conditions. but then look down here from our roof camera. the winds out of the west, gusting to some 23 miles an hour for our friends over in oakland. we will look for some breezy winds in the hills all around the bay today. 6:35 is the official sunrise. and 7:47 is when it sets.

live doppler 7 hd. low clouds and fog. we will be hard-pressed to clear the coast today. because of that, we will look for another cool afternoon. yesterday we did manage a few 80 eats, but today it looks like more uniform temperatures. here tropical storm isaac and we are looking at winds of 60 miles an hour. it hasn't gained much strength yet but once it gets into the warmer waters north of cuba, it will. it is move from the west-northwest at 20. with the track, grazing miami. they have had heavy rain. in the next 48 hours it should turn into a category 1 hurricane with winds of 74 miles an hour and even a cat 2. that will take it further to the west of tampa. still high storm surge, heavy rain, and then it will continue to dissipate and weaken into a tropical storm as it heads up toward alabama and mississippi on thursday night. temperatures here mid-to upper 50s with all of the fog. numbers are not bad to start out. but when are we going to warm up? you know when the fog pulls

back, that's when we go the breeze all around the bay. this morning pretty gusty winds out by the delta. up to 37 miles an hour. hayward a west wind at 14, with oakland coming in at 17. airport delays already of about 45 minutes. so it's one of those days where we will see the gray stick around through the noon hour. so low clouds and fog. the mist and the drizzle. continued cool today and then the slight warmup. it's headed our way tomorrow as the ridge of high pressure will build in from the south, favoring the warmup into our east bay valley. so the culprit is this system here that continues to hang to the north and west of us, allowing for below normal temperatures. in fact, we should see some low to mid-80s north and south end of the bay. but with that low we are also looking at gusty winds out of the southwest. this has allowed for some high fire danger, the potential anyway for northwest nevada and also northern california. so low relative humidity and we

are looking at five to ten percent there. so with temperatures cooling down, at least they are getting a break. in sacramento, 84 for a high there. 9 in los angeles and back home temperatures will range from the low to mid-60s from san francisco and oakland. low 70s to the north. and we are looking at a rather cool day all across the bay. in fact, you have to go way up to clear lake to see highs in the mid-80s, otherwise we are talking about upper 50s at the coast. centennial celebration continues in sunnyvale. low to mid-70s there. in sonoma, the indy race about 70. and we will look for the low clouds and fog to really make an early come back at at&t park. plan on 50s and some breezy winds there for this late afternoon game. there's a little warmup, but it's mainly inland come wednesday, thursday and friday. >> all right. we will take it. >> okay. >> thank you, lisa. coming up at 7:00, good morning

is pulling the plug on day one of the convention tomorrow because of tropical storm isaac. plans are still underway for the rest of the week. abcs karen traverse has the preview. >> i'm running for president of the united states. >> mitt romney has been campaigning for president every day for well over a year. almost five years if you count his last run. with the rough and tumble daily grind on the trail, sometimes a candidate's message gets lost. but as republicans gather for the convention in tampa, romney has the spotlight all to himself. >> the convention is an opportunity when americans are just starting to really tune in to the campaign. for mitt romney to sort of reintroduce himself to the public and really highlight his background and his vision for the future of the country. >> that vision boils down to the main message that romney tried to hammer home, president obama has failed to fix the economy, but romney has the tools and the blueprint to get the job done. political conventions are highly choreographed affairs, scripted

down to the minute. the list of speakers gives the party a chance to highlight their up-and-coming stars like keynote speaker new jersey governor chris christie and florida senator marco rubio. but ultimately it's all about the candidate. >> mostly it's an opportunity to flesh out who the nominee is. >> at the top of that list, the candidate's wife, ann, who has a prime time speaking slot. >> the wife is a reflection on the husband. so her job is then to kind of tell those stories about what he's like at home, humanize him. >> a role ann romney is uniquely qualified to fill. >> you know, i've known mit a very long time. we've known each other since we were kids. we started dating in high school. we've been married 42 years. >> the romney-ryan ticket is hoping to get a boost in the polls after the convention, but with the democratic convention the next week, whatever bounce they get may be short-lived. abc news, washington.

>> and abc's reporter mark matthews will be covering both parties' conventions. the republicans this week in tampa, the democrats in north carolina the final week. as we head into the republican national convention, turn to george to set the stage. coming up at 8:00 this morning will the storm over women's issues knock the republicans off course? can mitt romney use the convention to open up a lead in this race? the convention chairs from both parties face-off so don't miss this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 right here on abc7. officials in new york city say the two police officers involved in the shootout near the empire state building had never fired their weapons on duty before. ballistics evidence shows all nine bystanders wounded in friday's incident were shot by the two officers. investigators say the officer opened fire on a gunman who just killed a coworker around the corner from the empire state building. the gunman was killed and three wounded bystanders were hit with bullets, the rest by fragments.

even though chevron claims center is closed dealing with the richmond refinery fire back on august 6th, claims can still be filed by telephone. chevron said it will continue to maintain their toll-free number after processing 18,000 claims from people who complained of health problems. this is the number on the screen. 866-260-7881. oakland attorney john burriss said he has more than 3,000 people lined up to seek legal action against chevron. he told people yesterday the fire was preventable. he's trying to bring as many people as possible into the fold to join a claim of gross neglectly generals filed by nine

so far. they were offering services at the community rally. tomorrow the first in a series of meetings to update residents on the investigation into the fire. that meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the richmond city council chambers. well, san francisco may not be the biggest city. it doesn't have the highest crime rate, but it does have the highest paid police chief in the country. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. chief greg sir made more than $321,000 last year, putting him at the top of the heap among the nation's police chiefs. he's also the highest paid department head in san francisco. he's closely followed by san francisco's fire chief, joanne hayes white, who took in $310,000 in pay and other compensation. so back to the police chief, here's how san francisco police chief greg sur compares with charlie beck and new york police chief kelly. they said his salary tops beck's by more than $14,000 last year and he topped kelly's of new york by more than $116,000. coming up, something through to keep your kids busy with on

>> every birthday is important to children, especially if they have a life-threatening illness. here at camp royal in livermore they get to celebrate with their families and new friends. this is jack's camp. the taylor family foundation provides this camp for free for children diagnosed with brain tumors. >> who in your family has a brain tumor? >> me. >> my sister. we tried different things for it. it shrunk and grew, and shrunk and grew. >> my brother has problems with hearing and his brain doesn't work as well but we are happy he survived. >> i'm glad i have a sister. >> the first time i came to camp i met somebody that had the same brain tumor as me and my brain tumor is rare so that's really cool. >> the camp is important because lacey is a survivor ever 11 years.

>> the campt provides such a crucial level of support for these families who are so stressed out by their child's illness. >> there's a support group for the adults where they talk about the child's illness having a ripple effect on the whole family. >> it's the siblings who are maybe left with family members or friends while the parents are spending time at the hospital. it's the financial stress because parents want to be with their child and not be able to be maybe at their jobs, maybe lose their jobs because of it. >> parents don't have to hide their fears here and they can learn from others. >> we first came to camp right before ashley's second surgery. we didn't really know anybody who was going through what we were going through. >> you don't meet families that have someone with a brain tumor every day. >> it was so great. my family has come back every camp since to help other families try to have that same sort of connection. >> we throw around the term extended family a lot around here, but it's really true because our own families will never understand exactly everything that we went through. >> the kids get their own support groups when they aren't running around doing all the

event helps the family offer the gift of camp to more and more children every year. if you want more information or want to donate, can go to our website abc7news.com. just click "see it on tv." an annual walk to raise money to help low income breast cancer survivors was a huge success yesterday at oakland's lake merit. it was the eighth annual challenge sponsored by friends of faith. it was created in memory of bay area broadcaster fay the sancher who died after a long battle with breast cancer. the walk helps no income bay area men and women with breast cancer. i don't think those pictures do it justice because there were hundreds of people out there yesterday and we were all enjoying the sunshine. >> yeah. you are exhausted today," right? >> yeah, i am. even cooler. here's a look from mount tam. it looks beautiful it morning. the marine layer grew taller last night, 2400 feet. that's about as tall as it gets with the sun coming up 6:35 and setting 7:47. we do away with some of the 80s we saw yesterday. the roof camera, it is blowing. the low clouds allowing for airport delays up to 45 minutes and gusty winds out by the delta. live doppler 7 hd this morning shows all the low cloudiness. we will look for the fog to stay with us throughout much of the morning hours. it's more like 11, 12 in the afternoon we will begin to see it burn back, and once we do, it's going to hang along the shoreline, keeping it breezy around the bay again. 56 in oakland. good morning, san carlos, 57 for you with mid-50s up to the north, napa and fairfield. so visibility not too much of a problem along the coast. we are looking at not only the uniform temperatures this morning, but just 60s and

70s this afternoon. a quick look at the average. the winds out of the southwest giving you a indicator the cooler air is making it all the way into the east bay. even the sacramento valley cooling off. a west wind at 12 at sfo. we will get into a little bit of sunshine, but today the coolest day of the week with numbers mainly in the 60s and 70s. so here are highlights. low clouds this morning. the mist and drizzle along the coast and we will look for partly sunny conditions today with slightly warmer weather headed our way as soon as tomorrow inland. we will get into the 80s again. then we will look for upper 80s. in fact, by the middle of the week our warmest weather before yet another trough heads our way by the end of the work week. right now we are going to talk about partly sunny conditions this afternoon, and with temperatures below the average, we will be looking at this trough to hang out a little bit. then a ridge builds in from the south. that will begin to bring our numbers back up and more

sunshine. but for today, the game tonight, 5:00 with the atlanta braves hosting the -- the giants hosting the braves, looking for numbers in the upper 50s to mid-50s by 10:00 and wind when the fog pulls back and moves in tonight. 72 sack clara today. numbers about the same. maybe a degree or two cooler in the south bay. peninsula numbers, look for the afternoon clearing and only mid-60s for san mateo. a cloudy day in pacifica. san francisco a cool afternoon, partly sunny, 61 for you. in the north bay look for mainly 60s. 72, though, in napa. 80s, you have to go way north to around clear lake and cloverdale and into the east bay look for 65 in oakland today with 70 in fremont. out over the hills, well, maybe that 80 in brent radioed, but otherwise we are talking more mid-70s today here in pleasanton. 74 in dublin and down by the monterey bay we have plenty of clouds now, 65 in salinas.
