>> bracing for tropical storm isaac. a live look now from lake pontchartrain. major airport on the gulf coast closed and evacuation orders issued in advance of the storm. >> tonight president obama declared a federal state of emergency in louisiana as tropical storm isaac gains strength in the gulf of mexico coy. thousands have been told to evacuate medley from low lying areas along the gulf coast. oil and natural gas production stopped after energy companies evacuated offshore drilling rigs.

this track as it continues to move over the warm waters of the gulf of mexico expected to strengthen by tomorrow night category 1 hurricane as it nea nears the new orleans coast here. you will see what will happen. it makes land fall somewhere between new orleans and mississippi and then eventually weaken to tropical depression. biggest threat with this storm is going to be the storm surge expected to raise the water level if the tide come in at the same time on time good 6 to 12 feet. you combine that with heavy rains and isolated tornado possibility and they are facing some severe flooding across the region. >> all right sandy thank you. >> isaac crashing the republican party whose members hope to have the headlines to themselves this week during the national convention. that convention did opend scheduled but it was mere 2 minute formality. events pushed back a day with mitt romney giving his acceptance speech thursday in prime time instead of on wednesday. delegates used weather met for to deflect attention from isaa
