11:05 am
landfall tonight >> reporter: right. take a look at this map, four states in the red state of emergency has been declared in all four. five thousand national guard troops on stand by and president obama says more federal help is ready to go. take a look at these images this is louisiana, new into the station lake pontchartrain near new orleans you can see waves churning and crashing against the shore. no evacuation order for the city of new orleans. many are saying they plan to ride out the storm many this morning we know one gas station has run out of gas. now gulfport, mississippi, this is where isaac -- it looks peaceful now the governor has issued a dusk to dawn curfew for all of harrison county. the state has handed out 10,000 sandbags in the past few days. to alabama and a grey dolphin island the storm surge could reach as high as eight feet for the coast.
11:06 am
finally check out aerials over south florida, flooding left behind as the storm skirted the state skirted a direct hit. president obama made a statement a few hours ago. he says fema has been on the ground in the gulf more than a week preparing for this storm. >> the president: we are dealing with a big storm could be significant flooding and other damage across a large area. now is not the time to tempt fate. now is not the time to dismiss official warnings you need to take this seriously. >> reporter: tomorrow is the 7th anniversary of hurricane katrina. the army corp of engineers says since then 10 billion dollars in improvements have been made to the levee system. the corp is confident the levees can withstand isaac. right now there are hurricane warnings across 330 miles of the gulf. because of isaac, airlines

are cancelling flights out of alabama mississippi and florida today. new orleans's main airport is closed. we checked our airports, san francisco only has one daily flight to and from new orleans, both flights have been cancelled today and tomorrow. no cancellations at san jose or in oakland. airport officials say all travelers should check with their carriers regardless of their destination. check our flight tracker abc7news.com. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco who has been tracking isaac. thank you. good morning. here's a look at the satellite from 12 hours ago most convection below the eye of isaac now wrapped around as it did it intensified the eye wall and created more depth to the low pressure shower that increased the winds. we've been following the flight level winds they've been around 100 knots 100
11:08 am
mile per hour gusts they've made it to the ground that's why isaac now category 1, winds 75 miles per hour. here's the radar, still some of the strongest storms well offshore even though the eye is getting closer to the mouth of the mississippi river. want to show you as far as out ahead of it everybody wants to focus in on the eye wall, but the turns are going to happen in the northeast quadrant of the storm from louisiana back to the panhandle of florida there's a possibility of tornadoes. my concern is not the storm surge, not the winds, it is the amount of freshwater rain that is going to fall on mississippi and lieu through going to cause more flooding. -- we are relieved to tell you that hurricane isaac is not a threat to the republican national convention that. is getting underway today. yesterday's events were cut short because of fears of isaac. today mitt romney and his wife ann arrived in tampa and
