wednesday morning, thanks for joining us, i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. in san jose firefighters on the scene of a huge blaze at a commercial nursery. >> what made this tricky was the presence of pesticides and other toxic chemicals. terry mcsweeney is live near the scene. >> reporter: that changed the way they dealt with this fire this was the nursery here. there's not much left of it. firefighters got the call last night. take a look at what they saw when they pulled up. we have photos to give you an idea of what they were up against. as you can see, it was engulfed. what the firefighters did is keeping in mind that they had chemicals inside, all those

things that you might find at a nursery, fertilizers, pesticides, et cetera and they noticed a strange coloration of the flames, they let this one burn. a spokesman describing the tactics used. >> we were concerned about the toxicity of the chemicals into the ground water. we modified our tactics to make sure -- we allowed it to burn longer that eats up the chemical. once that happens, we extinguished it. >> reporter: someone on the ground in the parking lot what was the summer winds nursery not what would expect from a fire that did this much damage the fire is out, smoke is out, as of 15, 20 minutes ago the intersection has reopened. fires still on the scene keeping an eye on it, no signs of flare-ups. interesting tactic last night as they let it burn so the

runoff water wouldn't take chemicals into the river. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. to the latest on hurricane isaac. overnight it made landfall on the gulf coast for a second time dumping rain and causing flooding. here's a live mixture of new orleans. you can see this is biloxi, mississippi the surge is high you can see that area battered by winds and rain. with the storm moving slowly the first test of new orleans' new levee system is yet to come. >> reporter: right now the worst spot as far as flooding and danger to people appears to be plaquemines parish, louisiana south of new orleans. the storm surge from hurricane isaac has again over a levee there. a spokesperson says water is running over an 18 mile stretch of the levee and some homes are flooded.

deputies are going house-to-house to look for people who stayed, ignoring evacuation order. there are reports of people on roof and in their attics. not known how many are trapped hundreds of thousands are without power just in louisiana. the storm ripped a hole in his roof. >> the same kind of damage we received on katrina. i'm just blown away that kind of damage from this supposedly category 1 storm. >> reporter: since katrina fema has upgraded the levee system in new orleans to the tune of 10 billion dollars. the leave the water is pouring over in plaquemines parish was not included in that project. the parish president says they were spending their own money to improve it, they needed a few more years. isaac is moving slowly which kristen mentioned which means a lot of soaking rain. for more we go to meteorologist mike nicco.

we'll be testing those pumps soon in new orleans as the rains come down one to two inches per hour something we are going to watch over the next couple of hours. category 1, winds 80 miles per hour, sustained in a cat 1 you will get up to cat 2 wind gusts we could have up to 100 mile per hour gusts especially if individual storms around the hurricane. the hurricane has never looked better look at different feeder bands rotating around it as far north as jackson, mississippi, very broad system that has potential for tornadoes that's the red box. over the next couple of days it going to head up i-49 up to shreveport and friday the better part of the day rolling through arkansas where they need the rain. we'll check in later for the details. 4:35. presidential candidate mitt romney is planning to discuss veterans' issues via

satellite tonight as john mccain speaks in person. the focus will be on romney's running mate paul ryan. romney's wife ann spoke last night, saying her husband is a regular guy and the man america needs. mitt romney joined her on stage after the speech. he will be in indianapolis today to address the american legion. live report from the convention in 15 minutes. the man accused of murdering morgan hill teenager sierra lamar is due back in court in san jose today. antolin garcia-torres was arrested in may and held without bail. he was supposed to enter a plea but that hearing was postponed. police say they have dna linking him to the 15-year-old she disappeared march 16th. her body has not been found, despite numerous searches. several san francisco families are still waiting for

word on when they can get back into their homes after a massive water main break. it happened late yesterday morning in visitation valley. repair crews have been working to restore water to 14 homes, gas and electricity turned off to those homes as a precaution. the church next to the school was flooded. classes have been cancelled and they won't resume for two weeks. no word on what caused the water main to break. this morning senator feinstein is calling for a federal investigation into whether the sudden increase in gas prices we've been experiencing was justified, following the chevron refinery fire this month. senator says the fire did not affect gasoline supplies but prices still rose. prices soared to a high of $4.21. she says the spikes appear to be unjustified by supply and demand fundamentals. a few hours from now
