miles an hour. the cat 1 hurricane came ashore last night near the mississippi river and remained stationary for several hours. >> authorities say a storm surge is going over a levee in plaquemines parish south of new orleans. the water was running over an 18 mile stretch of the levee flooding some homes. >> reporter: hurricane isaac is battering the gulf. the category 1 hurricane came ashore tuesday night with 80 mile per hour winds and heavy rain that is drenching the region. >> affects that we thought would come from a major storm are in fact taking place. >> reporter: winds are so strong, they rimmed the roof off the home of a louisiana parish -- they ripped the roof off the home of a louisiana parish president. trees are falling hundreds of thousands of homes are without power. >> this is a dangerous storm with the waters rising loss of life is a real possibility.

tall, white man, 185 pounds, he was wearing what looked like a police-style hat and a fake badge. investigators say he was driving a dark colored sedan and flashed a light behind this woman and let out the quick chirp of siren that you heard before so she pulled over he handcuffed her put her empty back of his car, drove her to a secluded area and raped her and left her there. residents say they were stunned to hear this. >> pretty shocking. i've lived here a long time and haven't heard of any violent crime here. >> scary, i don't know how i would react in a situation like that. >> reporter: police say always look for a solid, steady, front facing red light if you are being pulled over. they say police officers are required to have that. they also suggest that you pull over in a well lit

populated area put your blinker on so the officer knows you are aware he's back there. get to a safe spot they say if you are worried, call 911 within ask the dispatcher if this is a legitimate stop that is happening. this woman was pulled over on valley avenue in pleasanton this is at 3:00 in the morning. police say, she is physically going to be okay. she didn't suffer any life-threatening injuries. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. in san pablo police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect armed with a semi-automatic handgun who robbed a convenience store monday night. security cameras the -- at the market captured video of the man. the suspect got away with a drawer full of cash. investigators think drugs or alcohol might have played a role because the suspect didn't bother to wear a mask or cover his face. anyone with information is asked to contact the west

contra costa crimestoppers. oakland police are warning buyers to be careful when buying a car using craigslist after a couple became the latest to be robbed at gunpoint during a transaction on a freeway yesterday. the tribune reports the couple met the so-called seller at the lake merritt bart to buy a mercedes yesterday morning and were robbed during a test drive-by to men. investigators say they stole several thousand dollars before they forced the people from the car on i-580 near fruitvale avenue. police have several tips for buying a car safely on craigslist, meet in a public place, using a cashier's check or money order and make sure the vehicle has license plates. san jose firefighters remain at the scene of a huge fire that burned down a commercial nursery overnight the nursery erupted shortly before midnight. crews who got to the scene were concerned about pesticides, fertilizer and other toxic material.

they let the fire burn out the chemicals as well for a while to prevent them from mixing into the ground water when they hosed down the structure. about $400,000 worth of products were lost in the blaze. the cause is under investigation. terry mcsweeney is at the scene and will have a live update in the next half hour. tonight the east contra costa fire district will formally accept a much needed multi-million dollar federal grant which will allow it to reopen three fire stations and rehire 15 firefighters. it will get 7.8 million dollars from fema and the department of homeland security weeks after closing half its stations and laying off the firefighters. the cuts were made july 1st, after voters rejected a tax measure that would have raised more money to maintain staffing levels. neighborhood 7-eleven might look different to

food, they are crazy about burgers, fried chicken and pizza and opening restaurants like this one in baghdad. i'm rob nelson. 5:14. good morning this morning neighbors battling to save a grove of trees in san ramon are celebrating a victory. the city council reversed course last night and veted to keep dozens of trees in place along bollinger canyon road. activists urged the leaders to spare the trees they accuse the council of secretly voted in june to take out the trees to make room for wider lanes. the council is looking at other options. this morning 200,000 are waiting for the state to resolve a computer glitch that has held up unemployment and other benefit checks the problem surfaced monday it affects debit cards that are linked to bank of america accounts. this means people are not

getting their unemployment, disability and family leave payments. state officials say they hope to have the glitch picked by the end of the week. audit shows the metropolitan transportation commission using -- is using bridge toll funds to pay for relocating from oakland to san francisco and doing that is within the law. they voted last year to move from oakland to a former post office building at 390 mine street in san francisco and they used 1 -- main street in san francisco and they used 180 million dollars of bridge toll money to buy the building. they say the money will be replaced by renting out office space at the site. here's something you don't hear often people being asked to pay lower bills that is happening to thousands of aaa customers in northern california. the insurance carrier says december 1st, it will cut rates on homeowners' policies by 9.3%.

good wednesday morning, thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. san jose firefighters at a commercial nursery that burned overnight after purposefully not putting water on the blaze. terry mcsweeney is live at the scene near the almaden expressway. they had environmental concerns? >> reporter: right the nursery 10,000 square feet of retail space firefighters knew they had pesticides and fertilizer and other toxic chemicals and so they backed off and let it burn. if we take a look at the

water in the parking lot they did put water on it, not a lot, they let it burn. this water is sitting here because the danes have been capped here in the -- the drains have been capped here in the parking lot this water is going to have to be tested for pesticides and fertilizer. take a look at what firefighters found when they pulled up at the scene here at almaden and branham the summer winds nursery there are 12 of these nurseries in this area this one was fully involved. three alarm fire, firefighters letting it burn. the regional manager for the nursery got the call around midnight,#óyk erased out to the scene, parked across the street, -- he race add out to the scene, packed across the street and all he could do is watch. emotional as he described the thoughts he had this morning many >> i don't know what thoughts, memories, 50 years of doing

powerful hurricane that hit the region. katie marzullo live in the breaking news center with an update. >> reporter: that's right today marks seven years since hurricane katrina hit. although isaac is a weaker storm the president of plaquemines parish, louisiana says he's surprised and seeing similar damage. this is new video from gulfport, mississippi, us 90 the main beach road, billboard has torn lose and waters foot deep in some areas, knee deep in other places. officials say they were prepared for the system's arrival but caution residents should not take the wind and storm surge lightly. >> that storm surge is relentless, folks need to day in while the storm comes through. we have resources ready to g although the -- until the winds come down we are asking if you are not somewhere dangerous stay where you are at unless you are told to

evacuate. >> plaquemines parish is a hot spot storm surge event by isaac has pushed water over-the-top of an 18 mile stretch of levees. homes are flooded, hundreds of thousands without power, deputies are going door-to-door looking for people who did not follow the evacuation order and are now trapped. strong winds are hampering the rescue efforts to get those people to safety. since katrina, fema has updated the levy system in new orleans to the tune of 10 billion dollars, the levee that the water is pouring over in plaquemines parish was not included in that project. for more on what hurricane isaac is doing now we go to mike. isaac still category 1, 80 miles per hour, it slowed out of the northwest at six technically covering the coast, on land, but you are still getting a tremendous amount of moisture and heat from the ocean rotating around in a counterclockwise fashion. radar over the last three

we have breaking news. dutch media reporting a passenger plane has possibly been hijacked in spain to amsterdam's main airport the plane was escorted wednesday by two f-16 fighter jets. the report cited the defense ministry and reports say the plane is -- airport authorities do not immediately return calls we'll try to get more information. two newborns are undergoing treatment after they were infected with a strain of the mrsa bacteria at a sacramento hospital. the outbreak began last week inside the neonatal unit at sutter memorial both infants are expected to recover 20 other newborns were exposed but haven't shown signs of infection mrsa is a highly infectious staph germ that can cause fever and chills in its most serious form it can cause

108 palm springs, 75 tahoe. 5:49. united airlines says its computer systems are operating normally this morning following failure that delayed hundreds of flights. the passenger reservation system and website stopped working 2 1/2 hours yesterday that forced the airline to ground flights across the country. united is still trying to figure out what caused the glitch. united says it wouldn't charge extra fees if customers had to change their flights. governor brown has signed a new law that will help law enforcement nab dui offenders suspected of drug use by requiring a blood test instead of a urine sample. doctors say dug be diluted as they pass through kidneys. blood test would be more accurate pinpointing the amount and type of drug.
