crews working to repair the 42 inch main that ruptured and trying to figure out how this happened. this sink hole and visitation valley is the biggest reminder of the giant mess on sunny vaim avenue and there is about half a mile from cow palace. fixing could take longer than that. still, residents had to clear out were allowed to come home today. and we're live. >> work stopped for the day. this is a segment of the offending pipe. that will take two weeks to order and fab brait the steel necessary to repair that. and also today they were able to build a temporary road across the sidewalk and corner here. and that is what officials were waiting for to be able to allow people back into their homes. there would have been no way in and out.

there is progress but still a long way to go. >> this tight section brought up this after the noon. p.u.c. says rupture happened on the right hand side of the segment. there is a joint connection. before being brought out there is a hole cut to allow a worker to crawl inside for a inspection. but that inspection did not yield immediate answers to why the brand new 42 inch pipe failed yesterday morning. the transmission line gushed hundreds of thousands of gallons of water nearly three hours. turning the streets below it into a small river. at the catholic school, mud still sits up against the back door of the gym. volunteers helping get the campus in shape are wondering how they'll recover. >> this is very disappointing. we spent two weeks of having the gym floor redone. there are new carpets in the school. so it was, we spent a lot of time here. and a lot of hours here. this is just urge dwront see everything the way it is.
