good morning. thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze breaking news from the east coast three people were shot and killed in a supermarket in new jersey. new information about the gunman. katie marzullo is live in our breaking news center. >> reporter: the gunman reportedly among the dead was apparently wearing body armor. the shooting happened at the pathmark grocery store in old bridge, new jersey 25 miles outside of new york city around 1:00 this morning, before the store was open but employs were inside stocking shelves. police responded to a call of shots fired. we are hear at least two windows were bashed in at the store. police had a confrontation with the gunman and the gunman was shot and killed. again, we know he was wearing body armor. two other people dead, not known how many others were shot. we know several employees were

taken across street to a tgi fridays and waiting there. no word on who the shooter was or what if any his connection was to the store. if you are staying home this weekend, get ready for major road closures two bay area bridges starting today, amy hollyfield is live at the transbay terminal construction project in san francisco. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of you may be headed out for the long holiday weekend to relax construction crews are just gearing up. i've got video to show you. this is cool, watch this, time lapsed video to i go you a sense of what they are -- to give you a sense what they are going to be doing in san francisco this is the new terminal. they will be digging out a roadway and creating a temporary steel bridge that

going help them work around this area and keep them from closing this area in the future. how does this affect you? fremont street closing 10:00 this morning between howard and mission. if you are coming in off the bay bridge plan a route around. the new transit center is five years away. down south big closure, the dumbarton bridge shutting down they are going to be doing seismic work. it closed memorial day weekend all transportation officials are figuring out it is a good quiet time for shutdowns. they think this will be the last closure for this bridge. they are going to shut that down ten:00 tonight they hope to open it tuesday 5 a.m.. fremont in san francisco will also be open for tuesday morning's commute that is really when you want to watch the morning news because we will be watching to see if

they got their work done and if everything is open tuesday. keep in mind this is going on, relax, enjoy your labor day weekend. there will be a lot of crews working this holiday weekend. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. the republicans have wrapped up their convention. today mitt romney and paul ryan begin 68 days of campaigning before the election in november. romney accepted the nomination last night amid a show of republican unity that once seemed distance. he focused on jobs and the economy promising to make it better. he said it is time to turn the page on the obama administration. >> today the time has come for us to put disappointments of the last four years behind us to put aside the divisiveness and recriminations to forget about what might have been and look ahead to what can be. now is time to restore the promise of america. [ applause ]

>> romney and ryan will thank their supporters today then head out to campaign. actor clint eastwood's appears at the convention is drawing mixed reviews. while looking at an empty chair he carried on a long conversation with an imaginary president obama telling him he failed to deliver on his promises. >> and then i just wondered, all these promises and then i wondered about you know, when -- the -- what do you want me to tell romney? i can't tell him to do that, can't do that to himself. the bill passed unanimously in yesterday makes operators legally responsible for drinking by underaged passengers last machine a woman died after falling out of a party bus during a fight after a concert. chp says everyone on that bus had been drinking, except the driver. police officers in the south bay will step up summer crackdown on drunk drivers this labor day weekend. dui checkpoints are planned for saturday, extra patrols in the rest of the cities in santa clara county. law enforcement began their 18 day crackdown august 17th. 245 people have been arrested for drunk driving, a drop from last year no dui-related deaths on bay area roads. private memorial service will be held today for the man who left an impact on earth, and a footprint on the moon services will be held today in cincinnati for astronaut neil armstrong the first man to walk on the moon.

burned down in a devastating fire two years ago will reopen. terry mcsweeney is live at the new trace elementary school in san jose. >> reporter: it is a beautiful school, just fantastic design 1200 people expected out here, parents, teachers and students to come and celebrate the rebirth of this school. it going to be a community wide celebration city officials will be here as well far cry from what it looked like two years ago pictures from july 5th, 2010. flames taking this school to the ground. we were out here that morning and it was a massive fire. firefighters battling it for hours and hours. here this morning, completely different story. the cause of that fire, two 16-year-olds, they admitted setting that fire, each one took a different part of the school to set on fire. they were tried as adults, both convicted.

now 18-year-old sentenced to eight years in prison the other arsonist who has been convicted awaiting sentencing. they did 10 million dollars worth of damage. the school didn't hesitate, it set up portable classrooms, classes were in session for that fall 2010 school year. today the community coming together the school is going to be celebrated with a choir, students, parents, teachers, officials, trace elementary coming all the way back and the big celebration is today. here it is, students coming back-to-school and it is going to be better than ever as far as the campus is concerned. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> a san jose firefighter remains in intensive care after he had a major heart attack while fighting a fire. he is reportedly in stable condition in a medically

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. welcome back. oakland police investigating assaults against women in the fruitvale district they suspect additional victims have not reported the crimes. police are urging latina immigrants to come forward. investigators believe many cases have gone unreported because of fear within the community. this woman doesn't want to be identified but feels compelled to share her story. >> he was grabbing my hand and putting it in his private parts. >> there's an escalating level of violence associated. the women have -- one individual has been hospitalized. >> in every case the victim was walking alone, rape counselors believe many of these women are being targeted because most are here illegally. attackers know there's fay good chance the victims won't

come forward for fear of being deported. six bay area hospitals will pay a total of $375,000 in penalties to the state for jeopardizing health and safety of patients. biggest penalty went to kaiser san francisco $100,000 for failing to follow guidelines involving bedside devices that automatically administer insulin. kaiser south san francisco was fined $75,000 for leaving an object inside a patient during surgery. south san francisco medical center, menlo park surgical hospital, st. francis memorial in san francisco and st. mary's in san francisco all received $50,000 fines for various violations. next, college kids may feel unplugged as they head back to campus. bloomberg business report is next. sad morning for the abc news family and robin roberts. the tragedy that has struck one of the nation's most loved tv hosts.
