mainly in the 50s. by noontime we are going to see some sunshine. but still the 50s at the coast, the upper 60s around the inland valleys and the warmest numbers just touching 80s. we will be mild gin land but we will be a good, five, eight degrees below average today. more fog across the bay tonight. then there's a wind shift and that will set the stage for warmer weather. terry. >> thank you very much. break news out of contra. the contra county fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that burned two homes. it started at 3:00 this morning off concord boulevard. firefighters had it under control in about 50 minutes. there are know reports of any injuries. we will bring you more details as the information becomes available. the dumbarton bridge is closed this entire labor day weekend. take a look at the last cars crossing the dumbarton bridge between menlo park and fremont last night. about 30,000 vehicles a day cross it.

on any given weekend it's shut down for seismic retrofitting and it's going to reopen 5:30 tuesday morning if time for the back to court commute. this picture she's works on the eerily quiet bridge. they will install new steal bearings to give it more flexibility when the next big quake hits. >> it's two disks and they slide over each other. it gives the bridge up to four feet of movement in any direction. >> alternate routes include the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge and the south bray you have the 101-237apd loop. and another traffic alert this weekend. this one is san francisco. fremont street is closed from howard to mission treat street right where drivers get off the bay bridge. a detour is provided for the new transit bay terminal. fremont remains closed there until tuesday morning.

the exclusive waze reports our closers this weekend. you can find it on our website and download it and become a traffic spotter. new this morning a developing story in central afghanistan where the taliban is claiming responsibility for two suicide bombings at an afghan military base this morning. a dozen people are confirmed dead, including four afghan police officers. no nato troops were killed but some are among the injured. one bomber was on foot, followed by the second attacker who detonated a truck bomb. fifty-seven others injured, mostly civilians. in a separate action the pentagon has us droughns fired a missile and killed five in pakistan. an outpouring of support for a san jose firefighters who collapsed on the job. it was the quick thinking of colleagues that saved his life. the 42-year-old suffered a massive heart attack fighting a fire at the cathedral. more from karina rusk. >> san jose firefighters are a family and today they know they

saved a life of one of their own. >> he was not breathing at that point. initiated cpr. >> firefighter frank ryan suffered a heart attack yesterday after helping knock down a fire at st. patrick's cathedral. he had been with the department for 15 years. captain brian indicot is one of his many friends and works with him at station one. >> we do this every day. it's what we do. but when it's one of your own, he goes down, you know, i don't think you can be prepared for that. >> not only are san jose firefighters supporting the family, two brothers and a sister, but they are getting support from across the area. >> i have gotten phone calls from oakland, santa clara, agencies of that had very tragic line of duty deaths over the last few years. and they are calling us now to say you were there for us.

>> members of st. patrick's cathedral are grieving their own loss. it could take months to rebuild the church which has a congregation of 16,000. the vast majority of parishioners are vietnamese and seeing the damage at this sacred place is difficult. >> the image, i felt right here, you know, is this vietnam or what. it's really bad. just an awful feeling. >> the range of emotions could be more intense at regional medical. there is gratitude from the colleague and his life and hope for recovery. >> a situation that ended up going down inside there, but he's a fighter. he's fighting for his life right now. we just hope that he pulls through. >> and firefighters will continue to keep an around-the-clock vigil, hoping for some good news. it has been a difficult august. earlier this month the department mourned the loss of a 41-year-old fire captain, jose

martinez, died fight ago jerry aggressive form of cancer. in san jose, karina rusk, abc7 news. >> this morning police are hunting for a sexual predator who attacked a woman in san jose. this happened sunday just after 7:00 p.m. near park mohr avenue. this morning police have released a sketch of the suspect. he's described as about 5'7", between 35 and 45 years of age, broad shoulder speakers a dark complex. his hair was cut in a flat-top style. after a search, san jose hasn't seen any homicides for a week. it was one of the most violent stretches in san jose's history, 8 lives in 23 days. august 23rd they transferred officers, authorized overtime and flooded gang known areas with police, making more than two dozen arrests. they say the efforts are working.

but the some say the reason may be more elucy. he said don't assume there was less violence because there were no homicides. it could be because the ballet missed by half an inch. this morning the owners of an iconic san francisco italian restaurant in north beach have served their last meal after following six decades in business. cesar's restaurant served family style meals for 50 years. they closed last night. more than five hundred finers enjoyed the last meal and to say good-bye. they said they were forced because of economy. he said the locals who kep it going have moved away, and others have aged. he said, oh, this is the place, you know. >> i come at least once every two weeks. and then when i don't want to cook, i used to come down.

53 degrees and the wind is blowing. you see the flags blowing a bit. winds out of the south, it looks like. much more from her on how long this overcast is going to be lasting and a beautiful warming trend, i believe. we will hear from her shortly. new this morning, on tuesday control officials plan to spray parts of mountain view where mosquitoes tested positive for west nile virus. it will take several hours for it to complete. some of the adult mosquitoes collected thursday in the 94040 zip code tested positive. information packets about the fogging will be distributed to residents in the treatment area today and tomorrow. again, that fogging is scheduled to again late tuesday night. also new this morning, a u.s. coast guard cutter deployed from it's home port since march will return home in a couple hours. it is scheduled to be back in port at 7:45 this morning. the cutter's return follows a

161-day, 38,000 nautical mile deployment in the western pacific and southeast asia where it conducted operation was the u.s. navial forces. the cutter is named for an an add mural who was credited for expanding the guard's megs. the cal bears take the field this morning at their newly renovated stadium. we got an inside look at the extreme makeover fans can look forward to at today's season opener. >> reporter: the final screws are in place, the turf is ready and the menu is set. 89 years after memorial stadium opened, it's reopening with a $321 million renovation and seismic retrofit. >> we are testing out the systems, the scoreboard, the sound, preparing the food and beverage, getting things set up to host 63,000 folks. >> 63,000, that's 9,000 fewer than the old stadium seating allowed, but these new bleachers

hotter, temperatures will warm up significantly tomorrow and labor day. 6:40 is our official sunrise. 7:48 it will be setting. the marine layer extends anywhere from 1200 feet to over 3,000 feet. the winds a little breezy from the city all the way out toward concord. so live doppler hd shows the low clouds and fog not only in marin county in the peninsula, on the peninsula, but over into the east bay with the delta breeze blowing and that will allow for temperatures to feel pretty cool again today. it's 56 this morning at fremont. good morning, 53 in san francisco with 58 in oakland, as well as san jose. so we will be looking at these winds throughout the afternoon around the bay. but at sfo they are gusting to 20 miles an hour. in concord wind gusts to 24 while we have a west wind at 7 in hayward. definitely a little breeze out there. cloudy with areas. drizzle. closer to the coast we look for

partly cloudy skies toward noontime and temperatures really should be about 70 in the cities, mid-80s, north, south end of the bay and the inland valleys will be shy of that, barely reaching 80 today. much more tomorrow as we see more of a northerly wind and offshore flow as we head toward labor day. here's what you can expect today through 10:00, 11:00. the clouds holding on into the east bay. by noon we have plenty of clouds on the marin and the peninsula. but 5:00 some sunshine for the sausalito art festival. if you are headed to milbrae, there will be some sunshine there. it will take some time, though. a big festival there tomorrow and today with plenty of folks expected there. here's the way it looks for tomorrow morning with more low clouds and fog. but the burn-off is going to be much, much quicker for sunday as this upper level trough, which is bringing the cooler weather, the taller marine layer, the

healthy onshore flow, continues to slide to the east of us today. the coolest day today definitely, and then by tomorrow we are looking at a pretty nice warmup. more like summer. 74 in santa clara today with 72 in milpitas. plenty of 70s south with about 70 in san mateo. 58 with the clouds in pacifica. san francisco about seven degrees below average with the high of 63. and in the north bay look for a low to mid-70s from pet aluminum ma to santa rosa today. you have to go way north to get into the upper 60s. 66 today in oakland. and as you head inland, some of these numbers on the mild side with 76 in dublin, 80 in livermore. down by the monterey bay, yeah, it's cloudy now but santa cruz should warm to 69 later on. the look ahead, as much as ten to twelve degrees warmer tomorrow with labor day, maybe some upper 90s and not much of a change tuesday. it's the end of the week where we cool off again.

>> topping our news this half-hour, a ballot measure in the east bay are attracting some big bucks. in november richmond voters will decide whether it will become the first city in the nation to attack soda and other sugary drinks with a tax. here are the details. >> there are the slick direct mail advertisements urging voters to vote no on the tax. billboards have popped up arguing the tax would be bad for businesses. leak this small grocery store. >> if they raise the tax, a lot of customers aren't going to buy it anymore. >> this week an anti-tax commercial was filmed at casper's famous hot dogs and another at the movie herety. it's the work of local political action group community coalition against beverage taxes which is getting major funding from the american beverage association.

the group has spent more than $350,000 to stop the ballot measure. a council member said the tax would hurt poor people, is happy for the help. >> so if you are trying to protect your community, do you turn down anybody that wants to help you? >> if approved, the cost of soda and other sugar sweet ended drinks would rise by one penny pressure ounce. that's the brainchild of a cardiology gist. he said sugary drinks lead to serious childhood health problems and a tax would be a deterrent. his side has been outspent by more than 15-1. >> well, i think they should be frightened in that they think we are going to win. >> supporters of the tax say it would raise $3 million a year for childhood fitness programs if it can overcome the intensive ad campaign. >> it doesn't take a lot to sway people when you have a pretty sophisticated ad campaign like this one. but i do think that the pro tax measure is a good one and i hope it's successful. >> this weekend they are in

police say admits to making a bogus 911 call that resulted in a dog being shot by police is going to be arraigned next week. in happened on trout cart shortly after 2:00 tuesday afternoon. the 19-year-old who called 911 said someone was robbing a neighbor's house. when officers knocked on the door, three pit bulls broke through the gate and came at the place man. one dog was shot and ran away. her owner searched for two days. >> went out in the afternoon, and i found her, my dog. it was the happiest day of my life because i thought i lost her. >> well, the dog was shot in the leg, but she's going to be okay. place say the teenager admitted his 911 call was a hoax. the california legislature presented governor brown with a gift on the last day of the session. a historic pension reform bill. the bill raises the retirement age ever state employees, cuts benefits for new hires, and forces current employees to contribute more for benefits they already have.

the measure could save the state as much at $55 billion but that's over the next 30 years many. a battle of words has erupted between new jersey governor chris christie and governor brown. it started monday when christie called brown an old retread, saying he couldn't believe california voters chose him over meg whitman. today brown said, it's gone. >> i have to tell you, i ran three miles in 29 men's two nights ago. [applause] >> and i here by challenge governor christie to a three mile race, a pushup contest, and a chen-up contest! >> oh, here's the picture of the governor last year doing pushups. well, we are assuming he's doing pushups. we don't see him doing it there, it's a still picture. but he's getting help from his dog. there's no response yet on that challenge from christie. we are a few days away from the democratic national convention being held in

>> health concerns at san francisco state this weekend. a second student has been diagnosed with chicken pox. the cases appear to be unrelate the but school officials say they anticipate more cases. yesterday a letter went out to students and faculty advising chicken pox can take anywhere from three days to three weeks before the itchy, red source again to show up. officials at yosemite national park say this morning as many as 10,000 people could be exposed to the hantavirus. there have been six confirmed cases and two deaths. now an unprecedented numbers of cancellations as news of the disease spreads. abc news reporter stephanie stone has the latest. >> no shortage of vourists in the village. there's hardly any parking.

even though the signature cabins, deemed a favorite place to stay, are closed for an undetermined amount of time. dawn stayed in those same cabins with her family back in july during the time period when officials first noticed the problem. >> i stayed in the 900 block, the cabins over there. had a wonderful time with my family and everyone is still healthy, and it's been six weeks now. >> in fact, she says she loved it so much, she's back again with her friends. she's not giving the hantavirus a second thought. >> we are taking just a few precautions, maybe not putting our backpacks on the floor. but i'm not worried about it. >> park officials say that some 400 cab against that are open are designed differently than the signature ones. they are older. they don't have the double insulated walls, which are being blamed for the deer might infestation. hantavirus is spread through contact with deer mice, urine and droppings. >> we've taken apart the specific areas where we feel the mice are getting into the

cabins. we've taken out all that insulation and replaced it and replaced boards and patched up areas where we feel the mice are getting inside. >> they also say it's rare to contract the virus, which is exactly how joan feels. >> i guess i'm looking at things positively. i'm still enjoying the beautiful nature here. the park is receiving more than 1,000 calls a day from frightened visitors concerned about the growing jut break in yosemite. around here we have overcast this morning, but it's going to change nicely. >> it is. we had a cool day yesterday and a little bit different today with the numbers coming up a few degrees. but mist and drizzle at our coast and our cooling trend continues just for one more day. so two-thirds of the weekend much, much warmer. i'll explain coming up. >> all right. plus, one of the bay area's biggest and oldest art festivals kicks off,

5:4*6 an saturday morning. we have labor day weekend going on. it's not a lot of traffic on the golden gate bridge, which is what we are looking at at a live picture right now. not a lot of traffic anyway on a labor day weekend. a lot of people out of town. but it seems a little lighter than usual. looks dry out there. there was a mist this morning when i came across about 3:00, 3:15 but it doesn't seem to be happening now and everything moving smoothly out there. we will get more on the forecast from lisa in about one minute. but there's a new speed sailing record just set on san francisco bay. take a look at this. it reached a speed of 43.1 miles an hour during a nautical mile run yesterday off of peer 39. that's a speed sailing record. but the nine story high hydrotear can go faster than that. it's been briefly clocked at 59 miles an hour, making it the

world's fastest sailing boat. if you are going to go out on san francisco, 58 miles an hour would be either thrilling or terrifying, depending on who you are. i think it would be thrilling. >> i think it would be terrifying. let's not go together. >> no, let's not. >> definitely on the cool side today. starting out with plenty of clouds and mist and drizzle that you mentioned. here's a look at 80 outside. august is going down as the warmest month on record in reno with an average temperature of 79 degrees. that's sense records have been kept since 1888, while san francisco 3.6 below the average. so, yeah, it's been another coolish summer around here. of course, it's not over yet, but this is the long holiday weekend with maybe the last gasp of summer? naa! >> we are looking at the clouds in the east bay. also the north bay. and right now the peninsula looking okay. we do have some wind around the

area, but the fog is going to be a little bit stubborn throughout our morning hours. 56 in concord. good morning to you. 59 in mountain view. 53 in the city and 58 in oakland. so the winds, they are pretty gusty at sfo. up to 20 miles an hour. we've had some delays the past couple days due to the low ceiling. so perhaps again today. a south wind up to 24 in concord. so a little breezy out that way as well. so some areas of bris he will closer to the shoreline. otherwise cloudy skies, partly cloudy this afternoon with temperatures once again well below average, but only for one more day. we are looking at much warmer weather tomorrow into the labor day holiday. in fact, it's going to get pretty hot around here. for the next couple of hours then you notice the fog well into the delta with that westerly wind. it's noontime and we still have the clouds in marin and down around the san mateo coast. but then they are pulling back from our east bay and by about 5:00 we will see a good deal of

sunshine except at our cove. it's going to be cool with numbers in the 50s there. by tomorrow morning quickly we will see the fog retreat. that's going to make for a warmer afternoon. but we are still going to see the low clouds and fog appear to into tomorrow morning as well. the culprit is an upper level low that sits to the west of us. it continues to track to the east and once it does we will get on the back side of it and with more of a northerly offshore push we warm up quickly tomorrow. today plenty of 700 -- 70s here. the 42nd annual milbrae art and wine festival today. big crowds expected here. in the upper 60s. so a nice afternoon with numbers warming through the 70s tomorrow. 63 downtown. average high should be about 70. in sausalito today and tomorrow, the big festival. near east bay look for a cool 64 in berkeley today with 72 in
