let's start with a quick first look at the weather on the middle of this labor day weekend. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, everyone. we have a compressed marine layer so that is providing fog around the bay. and cool temperatures. fog not only in napa, santa rosa, but east valley. if you are headed out be careful in your start. but this will lead to a warming and drying trend and that means temperatures to as much as five to somewhat ten degrees warmer in areas throughout the bay area. we are talking about temperatures topping out around 90 degrees in the inland valleys. we are still going to see some coastal fog and the sea breeze is going to kick up throughout the afternoon. all in all a warmer day for everyone and the warmest day of the week yet to come. i'll talk about that a little later. tray. >> lisa, thanks very much. this morning we begin with a special prayer vigil for a critically injured san jose firefighter. it will be held at 4:00 this

morning. this is in honor of 41-year-old veteran firefighter frank ryan who remains in intensive care. he collapsed while battling the fire at state patrick's cathedral. firefighters did save saint patrick's school that will hold sunday services this morning. we have an update from the hospital. more than 200 st. patricks cathedral parishioners crowded the gymnasium at the school to say mass. they have to worship here because the fire broke out and heavily damaged their church on east santa clara street on thursday. this is also where 41-year-old frank ryan collapsed due to a heart attack after coming out of a flaming building to replenish his oxygen bottles. fire captain brian indicott visited him in the hospital. >> everything we are getting so far is definitely in a positive direction. we are very happy. >> captain indicot and other members of the truck where ryan was assigned were invited to attend the mass today. prayers were offered for ryan's recovery. parishioners are happy to pray for someone who tried to save their church. >> firefighters, if it wasn't

for them, the church wouldn't be there. and they need to get everything that they deserve. >> ryan was one of about 60 firefighters who worked to put out the three alarm fire. people were evacuated as the fire raced through the budding creating thick smoke and high temperatures. a dangerous mix for firefighters. >> a lot of fire, a lot of heat inside there. those are some of the worst condition we've seen in a long time. >> ryan's family and fellow firefighters have been by his side at the medical center, where he was brought in. they issued a statement saying frank is progressing in a positive way. we are taking it one day at a time different the circumstances surrounding his condition. any are also thankful for their support. >> he is going to survive. he has to. he has to. he just has to. >> frank ryan has a lot of well-wishers. the fire at the church is still

under investigation and church members we spoke to said they don't any when they will be able to worship inside the cathedral again. abc7 news. a major wildfire in mendocino county has burned two more homes but firefighters are making progress. the north pass fire located northeast of the the town of cavello has burned nearly 41,000 acres. this is youtube video of that fire. it's now destroyed a total of 7 homes and threatening 21 months. -- 21 others. this morning it's 58% contained. 1600 firefighters on the scene and the cost of fighting this fire has topped $20 million. this morning police are investigating a deadly shooting in north oakland. investigators say a man was shot to death just before 9:30 last night at 53rd street near martin luther king boulevard. it's about one block north of oakland children's hospital. there's no word of an arrest or a motive in the shooting. also in oakland growing concern

about safety after two more craigslist robbery. one was robbed at gunpoint friday night and the other incident happened yesterday morning near 62nd and outlook avenues. this follows at least two other craigslist robberies in oakland in the past month. police say you should always insist in meeting in a high traffic public location when buying or selling on craigslist. oakland residents are stepping out to show their frustration over recent street violence that has been plaguing their neighborhoods. they marched yesterday. pastors from several oakland churches led about 100 marchers in a unified showing of force calling for peace. in friday night there were three incidents the. last weekend ten people were shot, including three children. >> we are saying we are stepping out of the doors. we want them to say what do you need us to do so we can do that and make it happen. >> i've been reaching out over the summer to churches, asking them to join and adopt some of the young people in the programs

we are starting next month. >> these activists aren't just praying for change, they are demanding it. holding city leaders accountable for making specific improvements for helping young people to break the cycle of violence. this morning work continues on the dumbarton bridge. closed for the weekend for a major seismic fit. caltran said so far the bridge is on schedule and the bridge is scheduled to open by 5:00 a.m. tuesday just in time for rush hours. the closer began friday night. crews are working around the clock. they are replacing the expansion joint on the eastern side of the bridge across all six lanes of traffic. >> this area of bridge has been jacked up by up to 5 inches. that's in preparation for work over the next few months. >> the upgrades are expected to protect the dumbarton bridge from earthquakes. the entire $153 million project is expected to wrap up early next year. in san francisco, fremont street between howard and mission is also closed until tuesday. crews are excavating the new

underground rail level and they are also installing a bridge to keep traffic moving while they dig. a waze map can navigate you around all the detours all weekend lone. you can find it on google play, at the app store or on abc7news.com/waze. health officials have put out an advisory this weekend after two students were diagnosed with chicken pox. we have more. >> for students, word it out about chicken pox on camera. i got an e-mail and the roommate yelled and said did you get the e-mail at the same time? >> to health inspectors say it was unexpect the. >> it's unusual. we were very surprised to get two cases that appear to have arisen in two separate california counties. >> both students were diagnosed at san francisco state

university this week. one student lives in almeda county, the other in eldorado county. they are unrelated and were infected before coming to campus. >> with two cases of chicken pox on campus, health officials' biggest concern are for people who white have immune deficiencies or who are pregnant. >> people with cancer, on chemotherapy or on high-dose steroids. those people have been made aware there are those cases. >> for many chicken pox is en an illness they had as a child or have been immunized against. >> the rash is typical and you get little red bumps that turn into thin-walled blisters and the blisters burst. >> vaccinations will be available on campus next week for students interested. >> have you had chicken pox? >> i haven't. >> i've never had chicken pox or been vaccinated. >> in san francisco, abc7 news.

>> bay area veteran control agencies plan to spray parts of three local communities where mosquitoes have tested positive for west nile virus. they will be fogging sections of mountain view. and contra costa county will spray the community of neitsen. that's on tuesday, weather permitting. it will start at 11 and go an 7:00. in fact #* information packets will be handed out today. >> coming up next, it's not over yesterday in louisiana. the new evacuation orders issued because of severe flooding. and three people injured when a monster truck flies into the stands. we will show you more after the break. recent deadly attacks by afghan soldiers on afghan police and coalition troops have brought u.s. training of afghanstan security forces to a halt. a string of attacks against american troops and their own soldiers are bringing about new procedures for screening new recruits. the u.s. special forces in afghanistan said the training will stand down for a month or two, allowing existing recruits to be re-evaluated to weed out any insurgents. last month a marine captain with family ties to the bay area was killed by an ambush by a security member of the afghan security forces in training.

captain matt was on his fourth tour of duty when he was shot by an afghan place officer he was training. the decision affected about 1,000 current trainees. in louisiana an evacuation order remains in effect after hurricane isaac. it's happening in a rural area near slidell. official believe a lock from a die version canal is going to fail and possibly flood hundreds of homes. area waterways are swollen because of the heavy rains from the hurricane. as abc news reports, the gulf coast could take a long time to get back to normal. >> even as a ghost of it's former self, hurricane isaac is haunting the gulf coast. >> we are cleaning up branches and waiting for the power to come back on basically. >> this is more than an inconvenience, it continues to be dangerous to everybody. >> hundreds of thousands are without electricity in the sweltering summer heat. >> i have a generator, which is better, but it's still miserable. >> now we need the things that

are not going to spoil in the refrigerator. >> you can still eat in this restaurant, but it might be by candlelight. >> we don't have any power since tuesday night. we kept the meat fresh and we have a smoker we bought so the food is good. >> thousands are stranded in shelters, wondering when they will see their homes again. >> we evacuated monday and it's been really hard on us. >> one day at a team. take it like that. that's it. >> for others home is a memory. >> i don't want to go there because there's nothing to go back to. >> isaac shut down gulf coast refineries that produce about ten percent of the nation's fuel, accelerating the spike in gas prices, just in time to make you pay harder for the labor day drive. the refineries should be back in business next week. and in louisiana, this scene of a floodwater unearthed caskets in a graveyard.

here many residents will be spending the weekend manning sandbags. abc news. new york. >> new, authorities are investigating the crash of a monster truck right into the viewing stand during an event called monster air 2012. take a look. a fan caught part of it on video during a drag race. the truck driver lost control, bounced over a barricade, into spectators. three people are hospitalized but they are expected to survive. the truck driver was not injured. back here at home, the celebration for petaluma's little league boys continues with a parade through town. they made a name for themselves throughout the world series in pennsylvania. they came in third overall, third in the world. today's parade starts at 1:00 in the afternoon. 4th and d streets right there in petaluma. the team members are going to be

[laughter] >> kind of funny, too. you see the marine layer. it is very compressed. it has shrunk from 3,000 feet to

1,000 feet. that's why we are looking at the dense fog from the north bay around napa, santa rosa. quarter mile visibility all the way down to monterey. a few patches have made their way into concord and our live doppler 7 hd right now shows that we are looking at most it clinging to the shoreline. so with the clear start in san jose, you are a little milder, in the 50s. we will be looking at the earlier burn off. a warming and drying trend on the way today." 55 fremont as well as oakland. take a look at santa rosa. we've dropped significantly. the cooler air draining into the valley. it's 7 degrees cooler will. most areas starting out chillier, except for antioch, where we have the clear sky this morning. sunny and warmer for everyone, even if it's just a degree or two along the coast, you will see more sunshine. the sea breeze, northwest 10 to 20 miles an hour.

that won't be backing off and we will look for the warmest day this week to be the holiday, tomorrow, labor day. so we are looking at an area of low pressure that continues to weaken and move to the north and east of us. as it does we are looking at higher pressure building up from southern california and that's allowing for the wind shift and allowing for the on shore flow to slacken just a bit and a the bit of a down sloping wind. the warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere also aiding in our warmup today. so temperatures 10 degrees warmer in some spots today, especially around the bay. closer to the inland valleys. and then tomorrow maybe another two to three degrees of warming. so we are talking about a more summer like pattern with that 30-degree spread about from the coast to our inland valley. the inland breeze won't be reaching the sacramento valley so into the 90s there today. chico kind of warm at 91. you know it's warm when san diego it's 80. southern california warming up as well.

south of san francisco we will see more sunshine with upper 60s today for an afternoon high for for 42nd annual milbrae art and wine festival. up to the north in sausalito, pretty foggy and cloudy right now, but by about 9:00, 10:00, you are looking at mostly sunny conditions and a sea breeze and warming compared to yesterday. 72 in oakland today. nice afternoon if you are headed north. santa rosa. these numbers just about where they should be this time of year. 86 in livermore with concord coming in at 85 today and about four or five degrees warming for morgan hill to hollister. the accuweather seven-day forecast, warmest day tomorrow with some additional warming and maybe a few degrees warming with a few patches of fog on tuesday. and then we will keep the numbers pretty nice right on through the weekend. >> summer letting us know it's still in charge. >> yeah. i like that. >> all right. thank you. >> we are joined any from

and like i said, the a's bats are on fire. coco crisp leading off the game with a solo home run. his tenth of the year. 1-0, a's and the fans doing the bernie. pitcher aj griffin fresh off the d.l. he was able to finish his night. 7 innings. 1 run on 3 hits and 5 ks. chris carter finishes it off. and another solo shot. his 13th. a's win their eighth in a row. and giants are now only three back of the rangers in the american league west. >> it's got to be wrigley field with legendary broadcaster harry carrey staring at you. first at-bat with the giants. bases loaded, 3 rbi triple. 4-0 giants in the first. tim lincecum picked up his eighth win of the season. 6 1/3 innings. and giants win 5-2 to even the series at a game apiece and stay 4 1/2 up on the dodgers who beat arizona last night 2-1. let's go to the u.s. open. serena williams easily handled her russian opponent.

of the 60s and 70s has died. ♪ raindrops are falling on my head ♪ ♪ and that's why i have -- >> hal david along with burt bacharach wrote "raindrops keep falling on my head" along with other huge hits. david died yesterday from complications of a stroke. he was known for songs like "do you know the way to san jose" and "say a little prayer." he was 91 years old. a richmond elementary school building is reopening just in time for the new school year. johnathan bloom explains the cream itself remains unsolved. >> contractors are putting the finishing touches on the elementary school's new building, again. u. >> threes floors were damaged, they were flooded. >> the school board president showed us all the work that's

been done since last february when vandals broke in and nearly destroyed the buildings days before it was opened. graffiti, shattered glass, broken windows. >> all these windows were destroyed, all. >> ramsey said the repairs cost $1 million and the vandals are still on the lose. >> it's clear this wasn't a group of teenagers who did that. it was somebody who had a vendetta, somebody who was on a mission and somebody who had an ax to grind against the contractor or against the school district. >> teachers say they are not just excited about the new space but the learning opportunities that come with it. >> we have one of the more updated libraries in the district, we have all new books in the library. >> and the princpal is excited about the computer labs with pcs for up to 34 kids who might not have computers at home. >> there's such a divide in communities like this. we want to make sure our students have access to computers, that they have access

to all the most updated technology. >> including technology for the arts. >> the kids love doing plays. they love to create characters. >> and the teacher said the auditorium was supposed to be used for last year's graduation but it was too badly torn up. >> it impacted the children. the students were very disappointed, they were very upset. >> with the crime still unsolved, they are aren't alone. >> we are still very, very upset. we want to see somebody brought to justice. and we want somebody to turn this person in. >> in richmond, johnathan bloom, abc7 news. >> tens of thousands of art and wine lovers are expected in milbrae again today for the bay area's biggest labor day weekend event. ♪ >> it's the 42nd annual milbrae art and wine festival, considered by some to be the last blast of the summer. music is part of the fun, as we heard. nine bands performing there. 250 artists and craftmakers displaying their skills.

i-phone? yep. there was always a trade-in deal to be had, even craigslist. but now you can swap your old i-phone or mac or ipad into apple directly and get an apple credit. >> it's common for third parties. you see kiosks and malls that do that. but i haven't seen it from apple. it suggests the e phone is coming and we know when it's coming. apple is just trying to get people to buy the new phone and setting them up for that. >> the announcement about an i-phone5 is anticipated on september 12th with the iphones getting shipped by the 21st. this new recycle program has iphones users answering questions online about their iphone and whether it has a cracked screen or moderate scuff and an estimate of a trade in credit is immediately generated. and you can't turn the phones in at the store. you have to ship them in. and if you all exaggerated what great condition your phone is when it actually dropped in a lake, you might get a lot less than promised online. most devoted apple fans a seem intrigued by the offer and they kind of understand why. >> they are so many third party providers it's likely apple

wants to take part in that as well. it's a good incentive to turn your phones in actually back to apple and it's something i would be more inclined to do with an old phone. >> keep people like me from lagging behind. i'm perfectly happy, but i guess they want people to ramp up to their newest and better things. >> in san francisco, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. a lawsuit over russian river water in sonoma county has local water agencies studying the impact of low river levels. a santa rosa press democrat reports that officials are particularly concerned about a sandbar that builds up near jenner. they are worried it could breach and cause flooding. environmental groups want it to flow through to the ocean even in low flow years to give salmon spawning areas upstream. lisa is here now. she's been upstream and downstream checking out the forecast for us. what's going on?

from lisa argen. many americans are looking for jobs right now, but watch out. con artists are trying to take advantage. one elderly bay area man was about to be swindled out of hundreds of dollars. 7 on your side's michael finney stops them in their tracks. thank god for you guys because i was ready to support him and go out the door. >> dee dee prive was telling us how she and her dear friend, peter, came within minutes for falling for a costly scam. >> we are really exposed to ripoffs left and right. >> it began when 81-year-old peter received an e-mail offering a job as a secret shopper. he would get paid to visit stores and secretly rate their service. peter jumped at the chance. >> i'm retired, and it would be kind of extra money. i think i can converse with people pretty good without letting them know i was being a spy. >> later he received this letter with a check made out to peter for an impressive amount of money.

>> i was astonished, $1,940. that's a lot of money. >> i was willing to support peter and go into these stores and doing the transactions. >> the letter instructed peter to go online, type in a job code and get his assignment. it said he should deposit that check, then wire $760 to someone in greece. and $680 to someone in spain. peter could keep the rest of the money for himself. his job was to rate the two money wiring companies. >> i was ready yesterday to go to the bank and take the money out of my bank. >> peter deposited the check. the money appeared to be in his account. peter and dee dee were about to walk out the door and wire the money as directed. luckily dee dee had doubts. >> you have given them money and now you want it right out of the country? it doesn't add up. >> so before leaving the house, dee dee called 7 on your side, and we slammed the brakes on

this hoax. >> 7 on your side said, hey, wait a minute, anything like that, if it's money out of the country, if it's this and that, thank god for you guys. >> we told the couple this is an old scam. the check is a fake. and if peter wired money, it would be his own and it would be lost forever. sure enough, a week later peter's bank notified him the bogus check came back unpaid. the $1,900 was never there. thankfully all they lost was a little pride and a little time. >> if you are ever in doubt, give a shout to 7 on your side. >> being from switzerland, we don't have all this gangsterism. i'm apt to believe people. i think i'm an honest man so it would be nice if other people would be, too. >> i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> lisa argen joining us now. you know, looking back out here, we have the overcast for sure, but you look at those pictures

we've been looking at from around the east bay, you get high enough, the beautiful sunshine shots. >> i can't top the one you showed. >> oh, i don't know. >> it was nice. >> oh, let's take a look. what do you have? >> how about that? >> you win! >> yep. mount tam this morning, official sunrise was just moments ago. 6:31. 7:37 is the sunset. yes, due to the condensed marine layer we are looking at fog in the north bay. and no delays at sfo. nice switch. low fog and clouds. the marine layer, a lot shallower this morning and due to that we have some fog from a matter mile visibility santa rosa and napa. for a time being it was over concord. but right now clear conditions. and where the fog is not sitting we have numbers in the mid-60s. 53 in san francisco. notice how cool it has gotten in santa rosa.

45 there. 48 on the coast and everywhere around the bay, most everywhere is colder this morning. but that's not going to last. in fact, even a couple degrees warming at our coast today as the fog lifts sooner today, so we will see more sunshine and a warming and drying forecast, not only today but for the rest of the holiday. labor day will be the warmest day of the week. today starting out with just some patchy dense fog and that's what happens when the marine layer shrinks from about 3,000 feet to about 1,000 feet. it's shallow but it's more dense. with this area of low pressure losing it's influence across the bay, we will see these bases shrink to about 500 feet. maybe just at the water level, if you are crossing the golden gate bridge, you will see a little bit of fog. otherwise we are talking 2 do 4 degrees warming at our coast and as much as 10 degrees warming in the inland valleys. a nice afternoon if you like it on the warm side but really this is where we should be this time of year. notice the numbers coming up into the 90s from yosemite to

sacramento and that's because the delta breeze will be shut off. more of a localized sea breeze with a northwest wind this afternoon. temperatures up in the 60s once again for the mill bay art and wine festival. it looks good there. and on the other side of the city we are talking again mid-60s with temperatures a degree or two warmer but with the sea breeze you might start out with a slight jacket and then things will get more comfortable around the bay. take a look. more 70s to upper 70s as you head toward fremont today. 72 oakland." average highs should be about 70 in the city. we were only 63 yesterday. we are warmer today. maybe not as warm as you would like it, but still coming up in half moon bay we are looking at patchy fog but partial afternoon clearing there. upper 60s for cloverdale and antioch. and livermore, you were in the 70s but 80s today. improvement. 66 in monterey. here's the look ahead.

they added a few dozen eggs, breading and a special top secret seasoning mix. to hold it all together. the crowd waited at the cake, and when it came out of the pan and i can have a little piece awful - time crab cake for 8 bucks. the donations win to benefit the local 4h club. i'm concerned about the weather in maryland and around here and i'm glad you have a good one coming. >> yes. we have a warmup right now. well, maryland, i don't want to talk about maryland. we are in the 40s in the north bay valleys in the fog. elsewhere clear, warming up today with 90 inland, 70s around the bay. low 60s at the coast, more sunshine there. the then the fog will be back. breeze out of the northwest, 10 to 20 miles an hour. still kind of a cool coast temperature, but notice everyone else warms up, even through the holiday tomorrow. so it looks great. >> all right. well, thanks for joining us on the abc7 sunday morning news.
