>> terry: good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney in for carolyn tyler. labor day weekend is here. here is the forecast from lisa argen. >> lisa: good morning. here is the view from mount tam. you can see in the distance, mount tam here but look at all the fog. compressed marine layer in parts of the north bay. we started out in the 40s. it was chilly start from napa to santa rosa. still fog around the airport. look what happens around by noontime, warming up from the low to mid-60s in the bay. 12-10 degrees of warming from our coast to inland valleys. we're not done yet. warmest day of the week will be the holiday tomorrow. details coming up. >> terry: breaking news in san francisco, the chp is investigating the cause of a crash at highway 101 that sent a car over the railing onto the street below. video of the scene just in.

it happened at the split. two cars collided sending one car flying on to vermont street. this is near 16th. the driver was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. >> san francisco police investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in golden gate park last night. the man in his 30s crashed into a light pole near kezar drive and martin luther king drive. the victim's name has not been released. >> this morning we have news of a special prayer vigil for a critically injured firefighter. it will be held at san jose regional medical center at 4:00 this afternoon. this is in honor of 41-year-old frank ryan who remains in intensive care. he collapsed during a fire. they did save st. patrick's

school. here is an update from the hospital. >> reporter: more than 200 st. patrick's parishioners crowded to say mass. they have to worship here because the fire heavily damaged their church on thursday. this is also where 41-year-old frank ryan collapsed due to a heart attack after coming out of the flaming building. brian visited him at the hospital. >> everything we have gotten so far is in a positive direction. we're very happy. >> they were invited to attend this mass today. prayers were offered for ryan's recovery. parishioners are happy to pray for someone that tried to save the church. >> the church wouldn't be high pressure. they need to get everything they deserve. >> he worked to put out the

fire. they were evacuated as the fire raced through the building creating thick smoke and high temperatures, a dangerous mix. >> a lot of heat inside there. absolutely. there were some of the worst conditions we've seen in a long time. >> fellow firefighters have been by his side where he was brought in in critical condition. the family issued, frank is progressing in a positive way. we are taking it one day at the time given the circumstances surrounding his condition. the family thanks everyone for their support. >> he has to survive. he has to. he just has to. >> reporter: frank ryan as a lot of well winnerers. the fire is still under investigation and church members we spoke to don't know when they will be able to worship inside the cathedral again. >> terry: major wildfire in

mendocino county has burned two more homes. north pacifier, located northeast of the town of covello has burned 41,000 acres. you are looking at video of the effort. it has destroyed seven homes and threatening 21 others. right now it's 58% contained, 1600 firefighters are on the scene. the cost of fighting this fire has topped $20 million. >> this morning police are investigating a deadly shooting in north oakland. investigators say a man was shot to death just before 9:30 last night at 53rd street. so far there have been no arrests, no word of any suspects or motive in that shooting. also in oakland, growing concern about safety after two more craigslist robberies. one was robbed during a meeting with a craigslist seller. that happened on 73rd avenue. other incident happened 62nd and

outlook avenues. it follows two other robberies in the past month. you should insist on meeting in a high public traffic location when buying or selling merchandise. oakland residents marched. they led hundred marchers calling for peace. on friday night. four people were shot in three different incidents. one happening in a parking lot of a kentucky fried chicken store. last weekend ten people were shot including three children. >> we're stepping out of the doors. we wanted to make it happen. >> the church has asked them to join and adopt some of these young people. the activists aren't just praying for change, they are demanding it from city leaders.

they are going to hold them accountable to help young people break the cycle of violence. this morning, work continues on the dumbarton bridge which was closed for the weekend for a seismic retrofit. the work is on schedule. it's expected to reopen by 5:00 just in time for the rush hour. closure begin friday night. crews are working around the clock. >> this area of the bridge has been jacked up by up to 5 inches. that is preparation for work over the next few months. >> it's intended to protect the bridge from earthquakes. the project is expected to wrap up early next year. >> in san francisco, fremont street between howard and mission also closed until tuesday. crews are excavating the underground rail level of the transbay center and installing a temporary bridge.

a marine captain with ties in bay area was killed by the afghan security forces he was training. he was on his fourth tour of duty when he was shot. remnants of hurricane isaac are pushing up mississippi valley but some evacuees are not able to return home. team for petaluma with a big parade through town. oakland a's honored them at coliseum. they made a name for itself in pennsylvania and took third place in the worldwide competition. today's parade starts at 1:00 p.m. in petaluma. team members are going to be there riding in convertible hot rods and classic cars. then they end up at walnut park for a free hotdog barbecue. the question is parade weather. >> the sun keeps going for those guys. upper 70s but we are looking at a shallow marine layer. dense fog. here the it is. you can see the shallow fog, it's much shallower than yesterday. we'll talk about the warmup today and how long it's going to last. that is next. >> also next. cal bears play their first game

influence. it's not lasting up on mount tamalpais. higher elevations and view down below you can't see a thing. let's check in with lisa argen if it's going to burn off. >> lisa: it's not just confined to the north bay. fog around monterey. everyone will see slightly warmer conditions. here is a look from vollmer peak. you can see, it's not all burned off. we are still looking at cool conditions. numbers range from the 50s and 60s depending on where that cooler air is sitting. so it has drained into the valleys. live doppler 7-hd showing the fog will cling to the coast right now but the rest of the afternoon. we may see a little more sunshine from point reyes, it will be stuck right along the

san mateo coast. it's looking to be a nice afternoon with 56 in antioch. 55 in the city. still fog around sfo and we talked about the fog in monterey for a while. visibility was reduced to about eighth of a mile. temperatures feeling like fog with numbers dropping into the 40s in some spots. for the next couple of days. we have more summertime weather on our minds. a case in point. 24-hour change, noticed most places are warmer if you are not in one of those cool north bay valleys where 24 hours ago. you were warmer. we are looking at ten degrees warmer in oakland compared to yesterday. dense fog in some areas, otherwise 2-6 degrees warming and holding steady tomorrow. we're not going to get too hot. pretty much a nice looking forecast. here look at the fog. 9:00 right now and pull it back. we will look for sunshine throughout the bay today.

advantage of even that. one bay area man was about to be swindled out of hundreds of dollars, michael finney stopped the scammers in their track. >> dede is telling us how she and her dear friend came within minutes of falling for a costly scam. >> we were really exposed to ripoffs. >> it begin when 81-year-old peter received an e-mail offering a job as a secret shopper. he would get paid to visit stores and secretly rate their service. peter jumped at the chances. >> i'm retired. it would be kind of extra. i can converse with people without letting them know i was a spy. >> reporter: later he received a check made out for peter for impressive amount of money. >> $1940.

>> i was willing to support peter in going to these stores and doing the transactions. >> the letter instructed him to go on line, type in a job code and get his assignment. it said he should deposited the check and wire $760 to someone? greece and 680 to spain. peter could keep the rest of the money for himself. his job was to rate the two money wiring companies. >> to go to the bank and take the money out of the bank. >> he deposited the check, the money appeared to be in his account. peter were about to walk out the door and wire the money. luckily, dede had doubts. >> you've given them money and they want it out of the country, it doesn't add up. >> reporter: she called us and we slammed the brakes on this hoax. >> they said, wait a minute. anything like that, to send

north bay valleys. and sun is behind us. emeryville and you see the diffuse marine layer, not much left of it. you brighten up nicely but we are looking another couple of hours down around monterey. the airports and patchy fog around hayward and fremont, live doppler 7 hd. that is what happens when we have high pressure sitting right on top of us. it's allowing for the reduced visibility all morning long in some spots. be careful if you are headed to the beach. it will be cool there. breezy winds will stay with us throughout the afternoon. 48 degrees in san rafael. we were down to 45 earlier in santa rosa. 56 in oakland. feeling the affects of that burnoff. 61 in mountain view. we're looking at today beginning the warmup.

it's going to last through the holiday weekend. portions of you will stay pretty warm for tuesday. ten degrees warmer in oakland from the cooling from the north bay along the coast. we were down to 48 earlier in half moon bay. we're looking at those areas of fog for another hour or so. then 2-6 degrees warming today allowing for numbers to be average where they should for this time of year. they are holding pretty stead tomorrow. we'll have a few 90s as we head towards monday. water vapor imagery, two systems an area of low pressure will be passing to the north and east of us and high pressure building in from the south. southern california looking at warmer temperatures. we'll enjoy it while we have it. we're going to see a low continued to track off to the east. if you are anywhere by the coast or around the bay, still i probably need the can jacket.
