trying to piece together exactly what happened. >> a white car with more than a dozen bullet holes in the windshield. she heard two bursts of gunfire from inside her house which is right next door. >> i heard other girl saying, don't shoot. and then i heard 20 rounds went off. reporter: police say the officers pulled up ton the vehicle with their spotlights on and noticed the driver get out of the car with twhaitd thought was a gun in his waste band. >> the driver ducked and turned away from them behind the driver's door. and then continued the turning movement facing them with now the gun in his hands. >> they fired several rounds. then began shouting at the driver. investigators say he showed his hands, then ducked into the front seat of the vaccine. at about that time one of the officers jumped on to the hood of the white car. >> approached the vehicle, jumped up on the hood to get a better view of what was happening on the interior of the

car. during the second volley. >> police say the suspect was pronounced dead before being transported to the hospital. he did not fire at officers. they found what they described as an air soft rubber pellet gun in the car, along with 40 tabs of ecstasy. friends and extended family say the victim is 23-year-old mario romero. >> why they call him papaya. >> because he was sweet. >> this is the fifth officer involved shooting for vallejo police since may. >> was there any kind of exchange, any kind of dialogue between the officers and the suspect? >> none. >> how many rounds. >> excess of 30. reporter: police tell us that the second person who was hit, who is not killed, is now still in the hospital. we do understand from police that both men did have records, felony -- including felony weapons possession charges. the family of the victim who

passed away. they're -- now going to be holding a vigil at a local park here in the city. >> alan: also in vallejo, terrifying afternoon for a woman who hid while two teens robbed her home. it happened saturday afternoon on kenyon way. employs say two men kicked in her front door and the homeowner ran and hid in heir bathroom. when police arrived the suspects tried to run but were caught. the police believe the 18-year-old and 19-year-old suspects are responsible for other residential rob frizz that same area. new information tonight on a dramatic crash on highway 101 that sent a car airborne. it happened at 7:30 this morning at the 101 interstate 80 split in san francisco. the chp says a van collided with a car, sending the van flying off the freeway and on to have the street. you can see the serious damage caused. investigators now tell abc-7 the driver's seatbelt saved his

life. he suffered some bruising and a broken rib. san jose man is in jail tonight on suspicion of felony hit and run after police say he struck two pedestrians with his cadillac and took off. it happened shortly before 10:00 hagg night on nunes drive. an hour later officers spotted the cadillac on gridley street. police took the driver in custody. police say the 23-year-old, sign arguing with victims before he struck them with his car. the injuries are not life-threatening. a memorial for the victims of the 1991 oakland hills fire storm has been vandalized and it's not the first time. lillian kim is live in the oakland hills with a look at the damage. reporter: this is the sculpture vandalized sometime between last night and this morning. someone cut off five of the sculpture's metal bars. it's unclear the motive but it's likely they were taken with the

intent to sell. this memorial is officially called the oakland fire storm memorial garden, and it is wired for security. there's lighting, a siren, and a video monitoring system. the community that maintains the memorial is hoping surveillance video will help them identify the person or people responsible. they're waiting for a call back from the security company that operates the camera. this isn't the first time this happened. the sculpture has been vandalized twice before. it's designed -- it's prominent part of the memorial garden and represents the regrowing of trees in the area after the fire storm of 1991. that's when fire destroyed 3,000 homes and killed 25 people here in the oakland hills. >> a bit angry. this is like kind of dancing on the grave of those that died. and an insult to the community and to have this happen three times, happened two years ago, it's really frustrating.

reporter: the oakland landscape committee is helping to raise $5,000, money they plan to use to repair the sculpture and maintain their security system. >> alan: friends and coworkers offered prayers and wordeds of encouragement for a san jose firefighter battling for his life. frank ryan suffered a severe heart attack while putting ute fire at st. patrick church on thursday. ryan served on the fire department and san jose for 15 years. this afternoon, dozens gathered at regional medical center and lit a candle. that will be given to ryan's family. firefighters from other local departments joined the vigil. >> prayers with the family, for courage, and we're just honored to be part of this family. >> alan: many of the same firefighters who revived ryan on thursday have taken turns staying at the hospital around the clock. right now caltrans says work

>> alan: look at that. a huge turnout in petaluma today as the city celebrated the little league all-stars. thousands lined the streets for a parade to celebrate the hometown heroes. we're live in petaluma. reporter: we are at walnut park. not a lot going on. the celebration is over. but after the parade, a few hours ago, those thousands of fans packed this park like sardines. they looked on ecstatically as today was declared petaluma

national little league day and after that the heroes were given a key to the city. and with that, the petaluma national little league all-stars have the keys to their city. >> i'm psyched out. this is crazy. >> logan douglas and his teammates are being treated more like rock stars than all-stars-signing at autographs, posing for pictures. >> i'm overwhelmed. >> how much do you appreciate petaluma's support. >> a lot. a lot. they showed so much support. i don't know how we're going to repay them with that. that's going to be hard. >> by the looks on the faces of the thousands of fans packing the sidewalks of fourth street and petaluma boulevard for the parade, the players don't need to repay the town at all. they're the pride of petaluma and arguably more northern california. >> came up from san san jose for this. watched every game. >> it was a thriller. >> i'm so excited. i just love this town. such a great community.

the annual pride festival served up food, entertainment, and a dose of self-esteem. the corners of 19th and. >> frances: streets were alive with people, the aroma of food and music. the festival -- the organizers say they're excited to funding the first lgbt community center in the city. >> in the netherlands, a flaming display of pride by people with unique hair. the event was the annual redhead festival. 1400 redheads from 52 countries got together to celebrate their uniqueness. only between 1 and 2% of the world's population has red hair. one visitor said it felt weird not to stand out in the crowd but that it felt good, too. we have a very unique redhead here, too. >> i'm a redhead, yeah, but of course, chemicals are involved along the way, too. always been a redhead.

>> mike: revealed the secret. >> leigh: she may be having the sun screen on today because she was at the swimming pool. boy did we heat up. rogue low clouds and fog from the high definition mt. tamalpais cam. there was no fog inland and that's where the sun was out and temperatures warmed into the 90s. let's check in with live doppler 7hd. you can see a very thin layer of fog, just right near the coast. even down towards 'santa cruz they saw a little fog earlier today. this is starting to lift a little bit. it will start to move a little further inland overnight tonight. mainly the coast, and possibly into the bay, but i think inland communities will be clear tonight. santa cruz,some starting to pull away from your coast there and you saw plenty of sunshine this afternoon. right now we have 90 degrees in antioch. 90 in fairfield.
