. breaking news in the east bay these are live pictures of the scene where highway 680 is shutdown in both directions in alamo after a shootout between a california highway patrol officer and suspect during a traffic stop. you can see this is a very active scene now. that shooting happened 8:00 this morning on highway 680 at la of course that road the officer and us is -- at lavorgna road. both officer and suspect with were shot and taken to the hospital. sue hall will have more on the

traffic. let's begin with eric thomas live near the scene. moments ago the chp gave new information regarding the investigation into this shooting incident. they are looking for a black nissan maxima with california plates: 5 tzb 244. they are looking for this car in relation to the investigation there's a number you can call if you have seen it. this started with a routine traffic stop three hours ago, then something went wrong there was an exchange of gunfire chp does not know how that began. both men were hit, both transported to the hospital in critical condition. there's police presence everywhere i am and the park and ride on the surface streets, also parking lots like i-680.

let's hear chp. >> for unknown reasons gunfire was exchanged there may be a secondary vehicle involved it doesn't appear it is a safety threat to the public at this time. >> reporter: that was officer franzone. streets blocked off, south main blocked off, if you normally take i-680 it is blocked off in both directions northbound traffic taken off at south main. they will be here for several more hours. no names on the suspect or the chp officer who was hurt. a second chp car came by and called in for help and administered medical aid to the two men. also at this point, surface streets are parking lots i had to park half a mile away and

walk here. you want to avoid this area as much as possible. eric thomas, abc7 news. we continue our coverage live at the medical center. conflicting reports about the conditions of the officer and suspect. >> reporter: that's right. initial reports from the chp say the officer and the suspect were both in critical condition. now they are saying both are in serious condition. they are very tight-lipped. i want to take you to the scene after the shooting about 9 a.m., we have video of very emergency situation roads surrounding the hospital were closed. two motorcycles escorteding in this ambulance. we don't know if the suspect or the officer were inside this ambulance. we know both are being treated here in the trauma center. i want to take you to the more

recent scene. 10 squad cars motorcycle, from chp, local police from pleasant hill one officer from the contra costa county sheriff's office. the somber mood was palpable with officers arriving, wandering, no one would speak us to. back here live a hospital spokesman did confirm that family of the suspect and the officer have been contacted. we don't know if they are here. as i said somber mood is palpable. we will bring more information as we learn it. again, neither names of the suspect nor the officer has been released. >> as you can imagine with 680 shutdown in both directions the traffic is a nightmare sue is monitoring that. yes it is a nightmare implications all on surface streets live shot southbound past south main it is gridlock bumper-to-bumper northbound closed at red gear southbound

slow out of pleasant hill, danville boulevard jammed stone valley road south main bumper-to-bumper all the surface streets. one report of a person traveling between lavorgna and red gear said it was just not moving, 30 minutes to go less than one mile both directions. avoid the scene if possible and of course there's no estimated time of ropeing as the investigation is on -- of reopening as the investigation is ongoing. 24 towards the caldecott tunnel is moving well. if you can get around to highway 24 from any direction that would be the best alternate. of course we continue to follow this breaking news story all day long we'll have the latest from the crime scene as well as the hospital on abc7 news at 4:00 and instant updates throughout the day on twitter as well as on facebook.

we turn to other news. deputies are investigating a shooting that killed a 20-year-old in an unincorporated area of alameda county in san lorenzo 9:30 last night in the 400 block of bartlett avenue. the victim is from hayward police do not have motive or suspects. in san bruno top officials and residents are gathering at the site where pg&e explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes in september 2010. next sunday marks the blast's two year anniversary. amy hollyfield joins us from the neighborhood. >> reporter: good morning. you look around you do see progress. there are new homes like this beautiful one behind me. there are eight new homes. people have moved in look across the street homes under construction, 15 more homes on track to be built here in this neighborhood. there's progress underground in this neighborhood they have

breaking news. this is an update on the breaking news we brought you at the top of this newscast shootout involving a chp officer and suspect on highway 680 in alamo, 680 shutdown in both expect to have it closed for several hours this is a massive investigation. authorities on the lookout for a car in connection with the shooting. they have released the name of the driver suspected of being behind the wheel of that car. chp says it is a woman 35-year-old daisy garcia, a hispanic woman the car is a black nissan. you have the license plate there 1998 black nissan maxima, 5 tzb 3244 that is the car which chp is looking for. highway patrol officer was wounded and suspect. we'll stay on top of the story

massive sinkhole at corner of sunny detail and kora sent water flooding into the school. today the streets are fixed and so is most of the school. >> smells like a new car, it is great inside ain't looks beautiful. >> reporter: the principal says the entire school has been recarped -- carpeted and all desks sanitized. the gym is out of commission indefinitely. >> since we are an inner city school the kids rely on the gym, they can walk from here over there to go to our gym. now we don't have a gym to practice sports and for games. >> reporter: the convent suffered the worst of the damage displacing four nuns who live there. >> we take one day at a time and move on. >> reporter: go good spirits despite the setback. >> i feel great to be back. it is good to see the kids.
