good morning. busy news morning. thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. a chp officer remains on light support after he was shot while making a traffic stop yesterday. amy hollyfield with more on the our. >> reporter: chp officers have committed to making sure he isn't alone. they've made sure that someone was at his bedside throughout the name. here's a picture he is 37-year-old kenyon youngstrom. he is married and he has four children. he lives in fairfield and has worked for the chp for seven years. before that he was an army reservist. his friends and family have been arriving here at the hospital throughout the day and night yesterday arriving from northern and southern california. they have asked for their

privacy, but they did want a message out to the public and thank everyone for all of the support. chp officers having a hard time with this. they all seem to have a tremendous amount of respect for officer youngstrom. >> great individual. super individual. man of faith and support, encouragement to those around him and his family members. just hearing the stories i did tonight it goes along with just the kind of guy that i know. >> reporter: the officer was shot yesterday morning on i-680, 8:30 in the morning he made a traffic stop. police have not said why he pulled the car over. the shooting has impacted the community as well. officers have been receiving several calls of concerns from people in the public and reporters who were here yesterday covering this story say people here in the community were coming up to

them and can -- and asking how the officer is doing. this morning he's still listed in critical condition on life support. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. a lot of questions remain this morning regarding that officer-involved shooting. we don't know what triggered the stop and what happened between the officer and the suspect. john alston has more on that. >> reporter: more than 10 hours after the shooting the dead suspect's jeep was hauled from the shoulder of 680 in alamo, investigators are still working on a timeline for the stop that ended in gunfire. spokesman jimmy lee. >> we have dashcam video to analyze. >> reporter: they are talking to witnesses, one man pulled overimmediately after the shooting and called 911. his boss tells abc7 news he spoke to his employee who said another woman wearing medical

scrubs stopped and gave emergency treatment to the officer. the witness told his boss he heard 5 to 10 shots and a second chp officer was already parked behind the jeep. >> the second officer did fire his weapon at the driver. the driver was taken to the medical center he is deceased. >> reporter: the dead gunman was still buckled in his seat belt the chp made a traffic stop. the aftermath is captured on radio communications. >> nobody else yet -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: i-680 was closed much of the day leading to massive jams in and around walnut creek while police turned the freeway into a

temporary crime lab. one of the questions why one of the chp cars was parked in front of the suspect's jeep when they usually park behind vehicles they stop. >> that is something we are taking a close look at. i'm not going to address procedures at this time. >> that was john alston. authorities are not releasing the identity of the gunman. we know the vehicle the officer stopped on 680 yesterday morning is registered to a 36-year-old man whose last known residence is a duplex in sues lee the man moved out -- in sausalito. the man moved out last year. we talked by phone to the man's father living in alaska, he told us the sheriff's department contacted him last night suggesting he and his by meet with them. the father says his son has a master's degree and a software developer. they say they haven't heard

settlement. protesters claim their free speech rights were violated when they were pepper sprayed after refusing to disperse. details on the settlement won't be released until the terms are agreed upon. work use in los angeles have been angering some residents by chopping down hundreds of trees for a space shuttle. 400 ficus, pine and other trees that line the treats of l.a. are being removed so the enormous space shuttle can be removed from the l.a. airport through inglewood to the california science center. endeavour will make the trip next month the center will plant 800 trees to make up for the loss. some residents say no amount can make up for the shade and beauty of the lost trees. san francisco supervisors refused to other turn their vote approving a 134 unit condo project. the issue now goes to voters on the november ballot.
