we have live team coverage for you. vic lee on how the shooting unfolded and there is keira clapper up north and leslie brinkley at john muir hospital. we're going to begin with dan noyes, with more on lacey's background you've been looking into that, today. >> as is often the case, it's the day after that we find a more complete picture this, time, he left clues on the internet. including a detailed resume. >> chris lacey was a freelance computer programmer using this web site to look for work. he claims to have done contract work for several companies. no confirmation tonight and the i team reached an owner confirmed he hired lacey for four month autos i remember feeling like well, i'm not sure whether i trust him exactly or not. >> days later he told us he had concerns about lacey but couldn't figure out why. >> sometimes you can tell when

people have you know they seem to be nice and conversational and everything, but you can tell underneath they're angry, boy say. >> his father told abc 7's allen wong he and his wife saw mental health problems emerging from an early age, growing up in bend, oregon. >> sometimes we'd talk to him he'd be engaging and other times, he would be just kind of depressed and not wanting to talk or just kind of crawl inside of himself. >> craig lacey told us his son suffered a psychotic break his senior year at san francisco state. >> he was hallucinating and very paranoid. and he was in the hospital. they diagnosed him as bipolar and put him on lithium he grad waited with a 3.79 gpa, moved to this duplex in sausalito

and the i team learned he got a hunting license that same year. >> i never saw him use a handgun before. but he was pretty good shot with it. with a shotgun. and a bow. >> his resume says he started a small farm homestead to sell produce online and to customers in the bay area. he wrote i also contribute significant time to the ron paul campaign and the liberty movement. with his mental health history and access to guns those who knew chris lacey can't comprehend how and why he wound up in that highway shootout with a chp officer. >> and craig lacey told us he didn't talk to his son in a year and a half and didn't consider him to be a violent person. there are people who work for ron paul checking if anyone knew chris lacey. if you have a tip e mail me or

call. >> thank you. >> and it was march, 2011 when chris lacey moved from that home to the small community of corning. it's about tw hours north of sacramento near red bluff that. is where abc 7 news is tonight with neighborhood reaction. keira? >>. >> there are neighbors in this rural community of corning say chris lacey was quiet and mostly kept to himself. and he did tell them yesterday he would be returning to bait area for a brand new job in computer technology. one neighbor tells me he turned on the news and immediately recognized chris lacey's car. >> there is no names but when i seen the jeep i knew it was chris's. >> jim recalls last time he saw his neighbor and friend, chris lacey. just yesterday morning as he drove away in his green jeep for a job in the bay area. >> i did not note patrolman.

i'm sorry for the family. i'm also sorry for chris. >> neighbors called him a computer whiz who kept to himself. >> he never wanted to be around a lot of people. he would wave and jogged a lot. other than that he didn't want to associate. >> this 36-year-old didn't attract a lot of attention since he bought this property. neighbors sea say he was out in the garden granting vegetables and sunflowers. >> he's gone but in my mind he's still over there. i can see oim hymn out there, working in that yard. >> that same yard at 9:30 officers served a search warrant. >> they just took the fence down. they were all over that place. i just took pictures. >> there is a cop up in the corner. he had in the trees he had a shotgun aimed at the house. in the end he wasn't oo in there. >> i had been pronounce dead

>> with a description of a subject. suspect or anything like that? >> negative. just said officer down and i've been trying to call him no. response. >> there is the tail end of the commute hour. the chp officer, a seven year veteran of the force and his partner responded to a traffic accident near the road. >> and there is that location he was not able to locate the scene. he cleared the detail. >> two officer as agreed to meet up the freeway to handle a dead deer on the southbound lanes of 680. >> on the way to that location his beat partner told him that he was going to conduct a traffic stop on a green jeep wrangler for an obstructed license plate. >> the driver of the jeep was

a 36-year-old christopher lacey. the sheriff's spokesman would not say how he obstructed the license plate. officer youngstorm got out of the car. >> he apparently direct the jeep to pull in. the second office jer behind the jeep wrangler. >> the jeep now sandwiched and officer goes to the driver's side of the jeep. the dash board camera records what happened next. >> officer youngstorm and lacey have a short conversation. then, without warning, lacey pulled out a gun, and shot officer youngstorm in the head. his partner approaching from the rear heard the gunshots, withdrew or drew his own service weapon. and shot at the jeep, striking lacey critically. >> other crews responded skt

two taken to john muir hospital. the chp closed the freeway while investigators began their pains taking work. they exammined the jeep. >> inside of the vehicle there is a loaded handgun in addition to two loaded image he scenes. -- magazine autos this floral tribute keeps growing while the investigation continues. of course, there is still one big unanswered question which investigators are trying to find, that is motive. why did he shoot officer youngstorm? >> that is a troubling question. why did this happen? and we want to continue to break down the time line. understanding what happened will help authorities better understand. it started here in alamo. you can see officer youngstorm and partner went to check out a traffic accident is when

officer youngstorm reported to a dead deer on the side of the freeway as we zoom in. this is what he responded to and notice aid green jeep with an obstructed license plate. and at that point, that jeep this vehicle registered to the shooter. he ryed to talk to lacey that is when this shooting happened the scene. again a routine traffic stop suddenly and unexplain bli at this point went wrong of more questions to be answered here. >> yes. and there is a somber scene where the officer is on life support now. >> as you head, no really good news from here. there is no expectation that the officer will survive.

and is he in critical condition here and there are doctors conferring with family and friends to decide what to do next. i can tell thu driveway behind me, chp vehicles have been filing in and back out as colleagues and friends come by to pay a visit here at john muir medical center. crisis specialists and officers from other agencies are offering to console ask support family and friends here at the hospital. there are a number of people meeting with them now. and there is all told us he has four children and a somber scene, a sad situation here at the hospital. as we monitor things and his condition, as the night goes on.

police reacting to the latest fser involved shooting in the city. there have been seven such shootings since may there and don sanchez tells us the mother of a man killed this weekend wants an explanation. >> i don't want no apology. because... apology is not good enough and they don executed my son. >> strong words from mario roamero's mother. they were sitting in a car in front of their house at 4:00 in the morning. officers confronted them, ordering them out of the car. they say roamero had a gun in the waist band. >> the driver reached down towards the handgun. at which time officers engaged lethal force. >> they fired 31 rounds, roamero never fired a shot. police say the gun was a replica. here is a replica and real thing side by side. real one is on the left. >> i would say it's impossible to distinguish the difference.

during the confrontation, one officer jumped on the hood of the car and this officer was clearing the car. did he not fire at this point in time. and his sister disputes that. >> i saw everything. i saw everything. >> officers say they found two bags of ecstasy under car seats. d.a.and police internal affairs are investigating this incident after seven police-involved shootings since may. five have been fatal. the chief says officers are confronting more violent times. >> individuals seemingly are more willing to confront our officer was guns. i think that that is going to be a recipe for disaster. >> in this neighborhood there has been a memorial and photos. and investigators still have not talked to them. the mayor's office is hoping to set up a meeting sometime next week.

>> thank you. >> former alameda county supervisor is facing more trouble with the law arrested last week in orange county visiting a relative. police say they found her under the influence of methamphetamine. she faces drug charges and is also charged with child endangerment for leaving drug paraphernalia in the room she was sharing with her young son. she resigned her seat in april after it came out she had an affair and a drug problem. her husband since filed for divorce. >> a supervisor arrested early monday in san diego. police say the supervisor got into a fight in a downtown bar with a 30-year-old arizona man and faces felony battery charges for causing serious injury and disturbing the peace. the 31-year-old is out on bail and yesterday, attended a meeting in sebastapol. he said he was protecting female friends being harassed by rowdies at the bar.

sierra. we have had scattered storms here in the immediate bay area. there is a live view. we weren't looking over san francisco. but now we'll see clouds, high clouds and breaks in high clouds and there are low clouds moving from the coast and this is an interesting looking sky. and there is almost like a painting. we had weather today and now, taking a look at live doppler 7 hd. you can see there is even one thunderstorm i should point out most active weather with strikes and thunderstorms now moving into the sierra foothills. there is a thunderstorm that is moving in the direction of fort ross that hasn't made land fall yet. seems headed in that direction. there are pockets of sprinkles farther south z looking down now off the coastline and santa cruz county coastline. we can see an area of moisture

moving onshore there are no reports of rainfall. here are the current temperature readings, 57 degrees here in san francisco and half moon bay. 64 across the bay and oakland. 62 in santa rosa. mid to upper 70s inland east bay. it's mild now. but not warm. still a possibility of isolated thunderstorms overnight and there should abe wilder pattern friday through saturday. overnight tonight some fog at the coast and high clouds moving over as well. there are lows into mid-50s. and here is what's happening in the atmosphere, there is a remnant low of what was tropical storm john to the south. there is some going into southern california some coming into the bay area, starting at 7:00 this evening, there is that moisture there

is a chance of isolated thunderstorms during overnight hours and it should clear out by tomorrow morning and mid day, leaving with us partly to mostly sunny skies and into afternoon tomorrow, high temperatures in the south bay. upper 60s and mainly 70s into upper 70s at mountain view. there is highs into 70s up to low 80s in calistoga and napa. there are near east bay highs into 70s. there is 75 in newark. inland east bay highs into mid to upper 80s, 87 in livermore, 88 in antioch. here is the accu-weather forecast. there is a pattern throughout the weekend of high temperatures into mid-80s around the bay. mid-80s inland and there is a warm up at the start of next week.

california p.u.c. says there is no evidence of pg&e improperly welding or fudging inspections on new gas pipelines and the p.u.c. launched the investigation based on union workers saying all of us are serious about meeting or exceeding standards for quality of work. cpuc validated our commit tomt qaul quality. again this investigation only involves welds on newer pipelines not older ones being replaced following the deadly explosion. >> chef onron just released a report on the massive fire in richmond saying the investigation into the cause of the leak and source of the ignition on august 6th still ongoing but highlights a time line of the incident. response actions and an overview of air quality data. chevron says it will not be able to summarize measures to prevent a recurrence until the investigation is complete. >> tonight here on abc 7 news

>> we're getting new information about what led up to the highway shooting that critically injured a chp officer. we've learned the officer and another patrolman stopped a gunman to investigate an obstructed license plate. the officer went up to the driver's side of the green jeep and exchanged words with the driver, 36-year-old christopher lacey. >> without warning lacey pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the head. his partner heard the gunshot and saw his partner go down. >> and lacey died, police found a knife, ammunition and
