is abc7 news. thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. developing news in the santa cruz mountains traffic getting through southbound on highway 17 is not getting through now. this follows an accident and fire with a truck carrying

liquid nitrogen. terry mcsweeney is live near the scene lanes have been closed all night. what impact on traffic is this having? >> reporter: semis aren't going anywhere alternate routes aren't for them cars can get around it. it is a parking lot for trucks semis lined up, chp on scene. i shouted out to an officer is it going to reopen at 5? he said i heard 6:00, it could reopen earlier. the original plan was 3:45. look at what closed it, sky 7 hd from last night about 10:00 the call came in and the report was of a semi truck on fire the engine and the cab burped, not only that, but the fire spread to a nearby hillside and burned half acre grass fire that was knocked down. big rigs stuck on 17 before

redwood estates where the fire was, they've been stuck here all night long. calfire spokesperson talked about that grass fire and for a brief period of time, it was a big concern. >> we had to pull ladders to climb up it, [ inaudible ] did spread quickly first [ inaudible ] >> reporter: 5:00 reopening is not going to happen considering it is a little after now. chp officer on the scene told me he's heard 6:00. it could open before that. cars can get around. as up see for big rigs trucks that can't use alternates 17 southbound at bear creek road closed they are not going anywhere. they are getting a good night's sleep in redwood estates other trucks joining the line as the morning goes. more on ways to get around this and for cars there is a

way if get around this, let's check in with sue hall. great information. one of the alternates old santa cruz highway to get around that. once again, no big rigs an there, just cars. the other alternate which is a long way around would be highway 90 from -- 902 from half moon bay. possibly before 6:00, of course we will be following this southbound 17 bear creek road closed due to this big rig overnight accident. hopefully they will have that open shortly we'll be following that. 5:03. this morning memorial services are being planned for a highway patrol officer who was critically wonned during a shootout in the east bay this week. officer kenyon youngstrom was pronounced dead yesterday 6:00, he was on life support for a day and a half. he was killed after a traffic

stop on i-680 by 36-year-old christopher lacy who was shot and killed by young strum's partner. youngstrom's friends and family members held a vigil yesterday remembering him as a dedicated family man who loved his job. >> my dad and him would talk everyday we would always play with their children. we would always talk to them, pretty close. >> youngstrom's organs are being donated. he survived by his wife and four children. we are getting a clearer picture of what led up to tuesday's shooting. officer youngstrom and another patrolman stopped christopher lacy's jeep due to an obstructed license plate. youngstrom went to the window brief conversation with lacy then shot, youngstrom's partner saw what happened, fired back, killing lacy. >> a trust fun has been set up

to help officer youngstrom's family, go to any wells fargo branch and ask the teller your donation be contributed to the trust account in his name. oakland police investigating a drive-by shooting that left one man dead on west macarthur and san pablo. it happened before 3:00 this morning. police say found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the street. they think he was the victim of a drive-by, no arrests made. president obama will give the most important speech of his reelection campaign tonight when he accepts his party's nomination at the democratic national convention. last night president clinton made an impassioned case for a second term for mr. obama katie marzullo has the highlights and local reaction. >> reporter: democrats are thrilled with president clinton's speech last night especially considering some past bad blood as you know hillary clinton and president obama were locked in a bitter battle in time four years ago. president obama must have been

democrats say because of the poe shall for severe weather, republicans say the -- said the president isn't able to draw a big enough crowd. 5:07. everything should be back to normal this morning at san jose airport after scary moments. authorities evacuated terminal b after smoke in an elevator shaft triggered alarms some passengers left, others stayed aboard their flights until firefighters determined there was no hazard. some equipment failed and cause hydraulic fluid to over heat in the basement. the airport resumed normal operations 7:15 some passengers had to be rescreened. chevron has released 30 day report on the refinery fire. the report says chevron's investigation into the cause of the leak and source of ignition on august 6th, still ongoing. highlights a timeline of the

incident emergency response actions and an overview of air quality data. chevron says it will not be able to summarize measures to prevent a recurrence until the investigation is complete. in palo alto ground breaking set for later this morning for the expansion project at children's hospital, the expansion will double the hospital's existing size. it will feature, 550 new beds, space for diagnostic and treatment therapities. officials from the hospital, palo alto and -- several silicon valley companies will be speaking at the groundbreaking. could they see showers or something in our rear view mirror? >> mike, how is my rear view mirror? >> yeah, i'm not touching that. in-n-out burger facing a class action lawsuit accuse the chain of discriminating against minorities and people over 40 in its hiring process the suit was filed on behalf of two african-american men in their 40s who applied for jobs with in-n-out burger but not hired. their attorneys say they were qualified but didn't get the jobs because of their race and age. the suit seeks back pay and punitive damages doesn't say how much. a statement from the food chain says the company does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, race or age in hiring. an online survey asking passengers where they think muni needs to up prove from service reliability to vehicle cleanliness questions about bikes and pedestrians. you can go to website to give your opinions results posted

art modell has died he was 87. the team said he died early today at johns hopkins where he had been admitted wednesday, a cause of death not given. he was among the most important figures in the nfl as owner of the browns which became the ravens after he moved the team to baltimore in 1996. brandon mccarthy in the hospital after being hit ined the head by a line drive. the angels swept the a's winning 7-1. here's the scary scene in the 4th. aybar with a line drive, his head slammed on the ground the ball hit mccarthy above his right ear he did not lose consciousness but looked dazed after. mccarthy was able to walk-off the field but will stay in the hospital for observation. getting applause from the audience the fans. the a's are off today but he's not expected to be in seattle

hard to believe we are in early september using the word thunderstorms not just one day but a couple days in a row. i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. developing news we've been following all morning traffic nightmare on highway 17 could be wrapping up following a tanker truck fire overnight. terry mcsweeney is live near the scene with more. any progress? >> reporter: yeah, there has been progress in the past five, 10 minutes, some of the semis and trucks stopped here at

southbound 17 at bear creek road many have been here since 10:00 last night when that big rig fire took place they've been moving up the road. bear creek road still closed to traffic, still forcing everybody off of 17 this picture, this was nothing but semis parked here until 10 minutes ago, they all started moving up the hill. 17 at bear creek road still closed it looks like things are going to be changing. big rig fire last night 10:00 this is south of the redwood estates on 17. the call came in 10:00, the engine was on fire it spread to the cab then to a nearby hillside there was a half acre grass fire that burned that was knocked down they say first it took off rapidly but it slowed and they got around it and they knocked it down a half acre of grass fire burning there, no injuries as

moment southbound 17 still closed, chp still getting cars off the road at bear creek road. i wish i had a dollar for everybody who came up to us this morning and said how do i get around this i gotta get to santa cruz? i felt like telling them you should check in with sue hall. why don't we do that now. it is a grind good to see there is progress there. diverting off bear creek alternate would be old santa cruz highway then the long way around you can come from san mateo up and over 92 to highway 1 southbound to santa cruz that is your alternate at this hour. the waze app does show the old santa cruz highway looking very clear now. hopefully, that would be a good alternate for new morning. looks like they are making some progress we'll update that in a couple of minutes. relatives and colleagues

of a murdered highway patrol officer are planning a memorial service while detectives continue to piece together exactly what preceded the shooting that killed him. -- amy hollyfield is live in martinez where people are in morning. >> reporter: it is going to be a tough day to report to work this is where officer youngstrom worked. look what is here to greet them, hopefully this will offer some some comfort tokens of love and support from the community these officers protect. the chp helicopter offered a final salute to officer kenyon youngstrom last night flying over the hospital after he died. the 37-year-old married father of four survived by his parents, four brothers and a sister. his family and co-workers have been by his side at john muir medical center since he was shot tuesday morning during a traffic stop. chp says young strup was known for his love of god, family

and his job. >> this has been a life altering tragedy for the family, certainly a tragedy that has affected us all deeply to the core. i think it is really important that you guys know he absolutely loved his job. >> reporter: there was a vigil last night in cordelia for youngstrom and his family he lived in fairfield he died an hour before the vigil started so that he announced his death to the crowd and held a moment of silence. a fund has been set up for the youngstrom family, if you are interested in donating here's the information: wells fargo bank is handling the fund. you just need to get to a wells fargo bank and tell the teller it is for the youngstrom family. the family has asked for privacy during this time but said through a spokesperson they are very appreciative for the public's support. amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

we are learning more about christopher boone lacy the man who killed officer youngstrom, before he was shot and killed himself. the i-team has been working hard to figure out who he was, traveling hours to his home in tehama and flushing out his extensive online life. i-team found lacy was a freelance computer programmer who used this website to look for work and dates. in his resume he claimed to have done contract work for several companies. the i-team reached sacramento business owner who confirmed lacy worked for him last year for four months. told the i-team that even then he concerns. >> sometimes you can tell when people have, you know they seem to be all nice and conversational and everything, but you can tell underneath that they are angry, i would say. >> lacy's father tells us he

pipelines not older ones replaced following the san bruno explosion. family and friends plan to resume the search today for a young man from lafayette who vanished during a weekend rafting trip. he disappeared on the sacramento river sunday afternoon. his friends last saw him near a popular hangout called beer can beach. deputies and volunteers have searched the river and nearby area since he disappeared sunday they plan to go out again in morning. a los angeles bank manage okay this morning after a terrifying and bizarre heist. two masked robbers abducted her from her home and held her overnight in the morning they strapped what they said was a bomb to her stomach and demanded she go to her east l.a. branch to take money and place it outside for the robbers to retrieve. she did that and the two escaped with the cash. a bomb squad removed the bomb from her waist and rendered it
