forecast. a few radar returns to the south and off to the east where they are going to stay today. i think we are going to see temperatures warmer due to the extra sunshine and the lack of thunderstorms in the forecast, while you were sleeping the red flag warning high fire danger was dropped because of the lack of storms coast 56 to 60 partly sunny. upper 70s to upper 80s inland. good morning. commute getting underway with good news in the santa cruz mountains southbound 17 was closed most of it at night northbound lanes too all reopen in the santa cruz mountains both northbound and southbound smoothly this is the macarthur maze lane closure reopened traffic is flowing smoothly through there. bay bridge toll very light minor delay for cash paying folks. we are continuing to follow developing news out of

santa cruz county where a tanker fire shutdown highway 17 overnight in the last 20 minutes highway patrol reopened lanes. terry mcsweeney joins us live from there. >> reporter: if you -- southbound 17 absolutely wide open, chp gone, caltrans gone, everything flowing smoothly southbound and northbound a few minutes ago i saw the truck that was involved in that fire towed, southbound rather northbound towards san jose that caused a slow -- a bit of delay as chp escorted that burned tanker truck out of the santa cruz mountains. take a look from sky 7 hd pictures from last night 10:00 this is what it looked like. you can see that semi engulfed in flames it started in the engine went to the cab nobody injured as a result of what you are looking at there and not only did the cab burn but

also it started a grass fire that burned a half acre calfire quickly on the scene and got that knocked down. calfire spokesman telling us what it was in that big rig. >> actually had to pull ladders to be able to climb up it, [ inaudible ] it did spread quickly at first, we slowed it down. >> reporter: talking the grass fire that burned and they were fortunate to get that knocked down. there was liquid nitrogen in that truck they say it is built in such a way that the chance of a fire spreading from the engine to that volatile material was slim and when they got there, they started working on it, it became next to impossible for that fire to spread they got it all knocked down again 5:45 this morning, they got the

southbound lanes reopened and looking out there now you would have no idea that there was any problem here at all. some truck drivers were stuck in their big rigs for a little over seven hours here as they dealt with the situation and figured a way to get that big rig off of the southbound lanes and they did that a short time ago. everything back to normal. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. memorial services are being planned for a highway patrol officer who died last night after being taken off life support. officer kenyon youngstrom was pronounced dead last night after 6 p.m. on life support for a day and a half, after being shot in the head tuesday. the shooter identified as 36-year-old christopher lacy who youngstrom tried to pull

the democratic national convention wraps up tonight in north carolina with a speech from president obama. katie marzullo joins us. >> reporter: president obama will make his case for reelection tonight but you are going to hear this morning on "good morning america" the white house senior adviser saying he does not anticipate a big bounce in the polls following the convention that the race will remain tight until election day. the last night former president clinton made his own case for president obama's reelection. president clinton fired up the delegates and got a hug from president obama after his speech. bill clinton validated the current president's plan and said no president could fully repair the damage in four years. democratic lawmakers from california and here in the bay area are gushing over his performance. senator boxer said she was "over the moon." >> bill clinton is such a great teacher, he laid it out. >> that was the very best. i think the quintessential

speech. >> it was clintonesque. >> reporter: before president obama takes to the stage tonight delegates will hear from vice president biden. a long time biden confidant says to look forbidden's conviction, character and values. there is a change of venue for all of the speeches they've been moved to the fine,000 seat convention hall because of the weather. president obama will accept his party's nomination and give his speech shortly after 7:00 tonight. later this hour we go live to charlotte, north carolina. driving in we saw clouds. lead to significant delays at sfo. low clouds and every once in a while trying to drop a little rain you can see there's radar there and the radar was showing a little shower activity between

passenger had an explosive liquid with him and made it past security on to us air ways flight 1267 headed ford dallas. the flight was ordered back to philadelphia where it sits on the tarmac right now. you can see the emergency vehicles all lined up behind it. obviously, authorities will want to check that plane and took to whoever onboard was involved in that. we'll keep you updated. new from china, secretary of state clinton held a tension-filled meeting with the chinese premier she and -- they met today and the two discussed the ongoing conflict in syria. during a joint news conference clinton said it is no secret the u.s. is disappointed in how china is reacting to the crisis. amazon set to unveil a new kindle expected to compete with growing number of 7 inch

tablets beginning to flood the market starting a week from saturday california residents will begin paying local sales tax on internet purchases expected to add 320 million dollars a year to california revenues, 83 million from amazon alone. new index finds americans growing more pessimistic about their financial situation. michael finney has the surprising group of americans now feel this economic pinch. -- now feeling this economic pinch. >> reporter: good morning it is not just low income families feeling financially stressed. consumer reports show even those earning $1,000 a year or -- earning $100,000 a year or more are feeling pinched too. it is now well below 50 meaning more people think their financial prospects are getting worse rather than better.

each month consumer reports asks a cross section of americans about specific financial troubles they faced in the past thirty days. those are on the rise even among the more affluent. the index calls it the trouble tracker it increased dramatically in the past month. the biggest problems are lost or reduced health care. inability to pay for medications and medical care and missed payments on major bills. data shows more people are losing jobs than are gaining jobs. that needs to turn around for americans to feel more secure and get the economy moving again. >> the consumer reports index says with affluent americans feeling more insecure they are curtailing spending that has a ripple down effect slowing the economy overall. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. we turn over to mike with your forecast. thunderstorms in the

>> announcer: abc7 news starts right now with live breaking news. breaking news from philadelphia this is a live picture of a us air ways flight ordered back to the airport because of a threat onboard. our sister station is reporting that somebody called the airline saying a passenger on this flight had an kphres liquid with him and somehow made it past security on to us airways flight 1267 headed for dallas ft. worth that flight turned around ordered back to philadelphia international where on the field with officials on the they are searching that entire flight. they are taking luggage off. see on the right there's an airport bus. our sister station reporting passengers are being put on to those airport buses now 74 people onboard, 69 passengers and five crewmembers everybody

the case southbound 17 was closed at bear creek road. take a look at a reason for that. this is a big rig fire captured by sky 7 hd it burned south of redwood estate there is was a two to three mile back-up all night long. it started in the engine of a semi and then burned into the cab, a half acre fire as well that calfire knocked down. calfire spokesman talked about the concerns about what that truck was carrying. cryogenic nitrogen so it is refrigerated liquid those tanks are well insulated we took cooling measures to make sure there wouldn't be a chance of a rupture. being towed out of the santa cruz mountains everything back open and going smoothly again, it was a reoning that got pushed back two, three times at 5:40 everything all clear. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 6:34. san francisco firefighters are still on the scene watching for hot spots after a two alarm fire in the mission district overnight. flames engulfed the top two floors of a victorian top floors rather of a victorian on delores and 22nd streets 1:00 this morning. it quickly grew to two alarms firefighters put the fire out within an hour the red cross has been called to help 26 displaced residents, a cause has not been determined. san jose firefighters successfully rescued a man who fell and wedged himself between cinder block walls between two buildings and a strip mall near east capital

expressway before 4:00 this morning. the fire department had to call out urban search-and-rescue team to pull the man to safety. no word on how he got himself wedged in. new this morning, oakland police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left a man dead. investigators still on the scene at west macarthur and san pablo avenue right now. police say they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound lying in the street. they think he was the victim of a drive-by. no arrests have been may. chp faces the grim task of planning a memorial for the officer who died last night after tuesday's highway shootout on i-680. amy hollyfield is live at chp headquarters. >> reporter: no doubt the officers here will be able to rely on the support of the community. take a look at what they've left on the door step. these flowers continue to arrive that plant in the front

just got here seconds ago. a man just dropped it off on his way to work this morning. letting officers know that people do care. the chp announced last night that officer kenyon youngstrom died at 6:05. he's survived by his wife, four kids, his parents, his four brothers and a sister. his family will also be receiving support from their community. there was a vigil last night in cordelia. youngstrom lived in fairfield. there were a lot of kids many of them go to school with youngstrom's children. one boy says he has also lost his father so he wanted to deliver a message to his classmates. >> i would like to tell 'em i feel so bad for you, i know the situation and if you ever need to talk to someone, i'm here for you. >> reporter: the chp offered a final salute, via helicopter

last night over john muir medical center in walnut week where officer youngstrom has been on life support since he was shot tuesday. the chp says this has shaken the department to its core. chp spokesman says that youngstrom's family is strong, united and courageous but is asking for privacy during this time. but wanted to let everyone know they are grateful for the public's support. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. if you would like to donate to officer youngstrom's family, visit any wells fargo branch mention his name to the teller and you could ask that funds be contribute today the trust account in his name. waking up to a cloudy morning. are those thunderstorms out of the region? >> still surprising to hear the word in early september, mike. >> yeah, it is. maybe a little surprise down in san jose, we've been

tracking this thunderstorm as it moved through the santa cruz mountains came out around los gatos continues northeast across the santa clara valley the strongest radar returns are moving to the east of downtown san jose towards alum rock about to head into the diablo range. best return now around berryessa road, east brokaw and sierra road where we should be getting steady rain and where we had two bolts of lightning. storms moving northeast this is where they are going to stay for the better part of today. the further south and east the best chance you have of seeing thunderstorms this morning into the afternoon the entire system moves east and the threat wanes. a lot of sun by 4:00, mid 70s bay, 60 at the coast. next three days doesn't get more normal mid 80s inland mid 70s bay mid 50s coast with a lot of sunshine in the afternoon. time for traffic and sue.
