>> this is abc7 news. >> in the news this saturday morning, a drama plays out at sea as two kidnapped children are rescued from a stolen boat. next we will tell you about the man arrested for all that. and this fire in lake county is three times bigger this morning than it was just last night. we will have the latest on people living nearby. good morning, everyone, i'm terry mcsweeney. let's begin this weekend with a look city weather. here's meteorologist lease arrange. arrange -- lisa argen. >> we have a lot of clear sky around and the fog, what little of it we have, will quickly retreat. we will see another sunny and pleasant day. although it is going to get warm in the inland valleys once again. we will see highs in the upper 80s to near 90 out toward the

delta, antioch. and plenty of 80s. you will notice closer to the bay we are talking 70s for oakland, san francisco mid-60s. and the fog pulls back away from the shoreline. things will be changing for the latter part of your weekend. we are talking about elevated fire danger, maybe not here, but close in the mountains. all the details and the seven-day outlook in a few moments. terry. >> lisa, thanks very much. this morning two children kidnapped by their father and taken for a ride on a stolen boat are safe. three-year-old brooklyn two-year-old devin maffei were rescued last night off the california coast. this morning their father is in custody. we have the story from coast guard pier in monterey. >> the coast guard cutter hawksbill came in unleashed. maffei sailed away with his two children on tuesday. south san francisco police sergeant bruce mcphillips announced the successful recovery of the children. >> i'm glad to announce that

devin and brooklyn maffei have been rescued from their three day ordeal at sea. >> the coast guard received notice friday morning the boat had been spotted. avilanching several craft, they shadowed it until they were able to come close enough to contact christopher maffei. >> we asked if we could put a boarding team on board and he said that would be fine. >> back in south san francisco the children's grandmother was elated to hear that the children were recovered and that they were fine. >> this is the best. the best. when i get my two grandchildren i'm going to hug them and never let them go. >> the officials say the children appear pine and unharmed. the coast guard and fbi and several other police agencies, including south san francisco police, started tracking the sailboat after it was spotted by a fishing vessel 50 miles off the san mateo coast. south san francisco police, with christopher maffei in custody, sped off the pier.

maffei will be charged with kidnapping. abc7 news. abc7 news has learned this is not match's first brush with the law. a woman living in clear lake says back in 1989 he was say assaulted by him when she lived in the bay area. we have that part of the story. >> in 1989 rhonda st of raub was working as a park ranger aid at an event in san mateo county. her duty was to keep cars out of the area. that's what she encountered christopher maffei, only 20 at the time, who was upset he couldn't get through. >> he jumps out, punches me out, tries to run me over with his truck. i fortunately rolled into my vehicle, and he sped off. i got his license number. i struggled, pregnant at that time. >> straub said she miss carried the next day.

straub at the time used her married name, schmidt, sued maffei and the san nationalio parks and rec department and received an undisclosed amount through compensation. she now lives in clear lake. she contacted us after seeing him on the news. the san mateo courts also confirmed in 2009 maffei was charged with grand theft but the case was dismissed. abc7 news also obtained a copy of the restraining order against maffei. the court granted the order because there was reason to believe he might take the children outside of the u.s. after it was revealed maffei had quit his job, closed his bank accounts, got rid of his assets and sold his home. the order also points out maffei had lived in thailand and had several bank accounts there. >> leeann me lynn dez, abc7 news. >> fire officials say a fire out

of control, and the mandatory evacuations has been lifted. the scotts fire is burning west of scotts valley road about 8 miles east of ukiah. sky 7hd shot these dramatic scenes as flames devoured timber in that area. it began yesterday afternoon and spread quickly. it's burned more than 1600 acres at last report. the plan today is to bring air tanker from sonoma county since the ukiah airbase is low on fire retardant. this morning police are trying to identify the body of a teenage girl found yesterday off a rural road. they don't believe it is missing morgue hills reporter lamar. >> they looked down over a dense area of the county where a body was found just after 9:00 a.m.. >> a passerby was in the area off of 101 on cannon drive in san benito county.

gets down from his vehicle and sees what he believes is a dead body about 100 feet or so off the roadway. >> the sergeant handles media relations for the santa clara sheriff's office that was called in to assist. >> the san benito county sheriffs, they are short staffed today. they reached out to us as part of a mutual aid request not only for additional resources but also for spokesmen and media purposes. >> the sergeant said they didn't get the call of sierra lamar. they are the agency handling the case of the teenager who has been missing out of morgue hills since march 16th. they confirmed that the body found is that of a female. closes close to the investigation tell us it's a young hispanic female but they do not believe it's lamar. those who live near the spot where the body was discovered aren't surprised to hear what happened. >> seems like a good spot for it because there's nobody around here. last week it was a mattress. there is always something. >> it's wooded. a lot of people hike and ride

horses through here. it's right next to the freeway so it's not unlikely that somebody could dump a body and get on the freeway and go. >> sources tell me that it does appear that the body was dumped there as opposed to that being where the death actually happened. again, they do not believe it is sierra lamar. in san benito county, abc7 news. pittsburgh police are looking for the person who shot a man to death at a busy local park. it happened about 7:00 last night at buchanan park. the male victim was shot near the bochy ball courts. the park was crowded at the time and police are talking to potential witnesses but so far mow suspect description has been released. this morning san francisco police are searching for a missing teenager, 16-year-old was last seen tuesday night leaving her linden street home in hayes valley. they said the student has as ma and did not take her inhaler

with her. if you see her, police call the police department. tomorrow is the too-year-old anniversary of the san bruno pipeline explosion and fire. it's been a long two years for the people who live there and the recovery is far from over. heather ishimaru brings us up-to-date. >> jose is welcomed by his neighbor across the street, nelly. they haven't seen much of each other over the last two years. the bishop's house survived the explosion and fire. his did not. but he's about to start rebuilding. it's been a painful two years waiting for this moment. >> it's like a nightmare because anywhere you go you don't feel like home. >> the september 9, 2010 pipeline explosion and fire killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. many more people were injured and more homes damaged. for the first year after the disaster, the neighborhood was a scarf empty lots. now it's a full-blown construction zone. >> it's nonstop.

it's nonstop except for sundays. they even sometimes come out and work on saturdays. our driveway has been dug up five times now and we aren't sure why. >> the city has set up an office on one of the lots staffed with three people to help oversee all of the work here. eight of the 38 homes destroyed are rebuilt, 13 more is underway. it's uncertain what will happen to the rest. >> people are building their houses. every day you can see, wow, what a great house that is. wow, my house stinks. >> nevertheless, he's grateful his house and family survived. sunday the city is unveiling a memorial plaque at the city park and hosting a social for residents. but some here say they prefer to stay in the neighborhood where it happened, where they lost 8 friends and neighbors forever. >> we feel that it should be where it was last year and where the actual blast site had taken place at glenview and claremont. that's the special spot for us.

of the day go home to their loved ones. vic lee, abc7 news. >> san jose police have released a surveillance tape of a brazen daylight carjacking last week. it happened on silver lake road. you see the woman coming out of her car. a man had gotten into that vehicle and put a knife to her throat. you see it's broad daylight. the woman tried to flag down another car. suspect nearly hits her as he's driving away. the 70-year-old victim suffered minor injuries. police need your help to capture the suspects described as men in their 20s. two fundraisers in lafayette for a college student missing for now almost a week. 28-year-old brett olson of lafayette a is missing. he became separated from his friends. he was last seen on shore. friends say he had been drinking. a $10,000 reward is being

offered to help find brett. well, new this morning the palo alto city council is considering a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries from opening up shop. according to the news group, three council member are seek to go fight the measure on the november ballot that would allow as many as three dispensaries to operate in palo alto. they say it would lead to secondary effects in neighborhoods, and other pennens en law cities such as mountain view and others have moved to ban dispensaries. a heckuva nice day yesterday. what do we have in store the next couple days? >> beautiful out there. talking about the same. a few areas of fog at the coast. they around going to make much progress moving across the bay. i talk about the changes on sunday. i will detail for you coming up.

pressure continuing to back off. we've got high pressure building in from the south. so we are in between systems. that's why we are enjoying another nice day today as the ridge continues over much of california, but then this system gets awfully close tomorrow. that will increase the breeze. if you are headed to the beach, strong rip currents from a northwesterly swell down around the marina state beach. keep that in mind if you are headed to the south. back home, once again temperatures right around average. 78 in san jose. nice day for you in campbell at 80. 81 in saratoga. heading up the peninsula, lots of sunshine, 76 in redwood city with san francisco in and around the mid-60s today. 61 for the sunset. plenty of sun there. you head north and you will see the 90s from clear lake to cloverdale. 82 in novato. east bay, plenty of 70s. 70 berkeley, 74 union city. you head inland and here's the

summertime warmth. a couple weeks left of summer. it will feel like it today. 88 in pleasanton with 90 in live more. this morning -- livermore. this morning a southwesterly wind through the delta. pretty comfortable but it will be warm throughout the afternoon. these readings are fairly similar to yesterday. hope you liked that. we have more on tap. clear condition along the central coast and by this afternoon with that, notice how quickly we warm up with 80s in santa cruz. and mid-60s monterey. head toward morgan hill and gilroy, upper 80s to near 90. here's a look at the seven day outlook. today pretty warm out there. more of an on shore flow tomorrow. a lot of sunshine. a little breezy, mid-80s. and by monday its still pretty nice. cool, but numbers not only do they warm up, we have an offshore flow that will set up away from the coast by the end of the work week. >> looks good. lisa, thanks a lot. in sports the dodgers are in town for a three-game series.

for your taste buds. >> breaking news out of afghanistan where overnight a suicide bomber has killed at least people in central kabul. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack. there was a u.s. intelligence facility nearby. they say all of the dead were civilians. spokesman nor the military said coalition forces are all accounted for. it happened not far from nato headquarters and the u.s. embassy in afghanistan.

campaign 2012 makes a bay area pit stop this weekend. paul ryan was seen in sparks, nevada yesterday. he's going to be guest of honor at a fund raiser at the danville home of former 49er and his wife. that will be followed to a visit in mountain view for a pep rally with supporters. tomorrow night ryan will attend a fund raisener fresno. the romney-ryan ticket is slamming the obama administration for yesterday's weak jobs report for the month of august. only 96,000 new jobs were created last month, 35,000 fewer than expected. the jobless rate fell to 8.1%, but only because a lot of people stopped looking for work. in fact the u.s. workforce has fallen to its lowest level in 31 years. speaking of jobs, more than two dozen bus drivers in the north bay may be losing theirs. the ma of rin independent journal reports the transit could lay off as many as 36 bus drivers t could happen if they lose the contract to provide bus

service in marin county. right now they pay to operate their bus routes. but under a renegotiated contract, it could save the county million and they could keep the contract but provide 25% less service. it will be discussed during a september 17th meeting. on the other side of the coin bay area companies will be filling more than 300 positions during next week's job fair. that event will be at the hotel wi t.c. om in market street in san francisco from noon to four on wednesday. we have details about that on abc7news.com under "see it on tv." the president made no mention of the economy in his weekly address this morning. instead he called on americans to mark the 11th anniversary of the september 11th terrorist tick attacks. >> the last decade has been a difficult one, but together we have answered those questions and come back stronger as a nation. we took the fight to al-qaeda, decimating their leadership and

putting them on the path to defeat. and thanks to the courage and skill of our intelligence personnel and armed forces, osama bin laden will never threaten america again. >> the president notes the 9/11 anniversary is being commemorated on tuesday by public service activities around the country. in the republican address wyoming senator john barraso said the country is not better off than four years ago when bush was president gloom 21 loaders from chris are meeting for the apec economic summit. the meeting of the economic powers in the asian region becomes among sluggish growth nearby and growing national sentiments in the region. hillary clinton is expected to meet with russian president putin today to ask to maintain. and china said they would boost domestic demand aimed at balancing their economy.

the most talked about speech of either convention. and now in an interview with his hem town paper in california, the carmel pine cone, clint eastwood gives a blow by blow how it came to be. the morning of his speech as he flew to tampa, he still hadn't chosen his words. they vet most of the people but i told them you can't do that with me because i don't know what i'm going to say. 15 minutes before he spoke he arrived at the hall, still no plans. then right before he took the stage, inspiration. there was a stool there and some fellow kept asking me if i wanted to set down. when i saw the stool sitting there, it gave me the idea. >> and i just -- >> he acknowledges he stumbled a bit up there and that he went longer than he was supposed to. but, quote, when people are applauding so much, it takes you ten minutes to say five minutes worth. after the speech eastwood went backstage where he says paul ryan thanked him.

>> we are lock being at a live picture, not of terry mcsweeney, but the golden gate bridge. right now, i tell you last weekend it was so thick out there, the fog burks right now it doesn't seem to be much of an issue. not much mist out there, if any. looking good and we have a nice forecast on the way. we have a 30-degree spread so you can take your pick what kind of climate you want to be in today. we will get the specifics from lisa argen momentarily. an eight foot sinkhole swallowed the car of a san francisco man this week. he's a law student at duke university. he was turning around near the campus. as you see, he dropped straight into the ground. the gaping hole was not visible from the street and was not marked off. but he said he wasn't the first to encounter it. a truck driver had apparently got his tire stuck in the hole the night before but his vehicle was too big to go in. crews put up caution tape but by the next day it had blob away.

the hole was not visible from inside a car. flash flooding almost cost a truck driver his life outside of phoenix, arizona. his truck got stuck in the mud along a rising creek. he had to climb on the roof when rushing water slowly washed the truck into midstream. they rescued him by raft. the operation took two hours. thunderstorms dumped as much as two inches of rain on the phoenix area. it is monsoon down there. this morning the faa is trying to figure out how a landing gear door from a jet plane broke off and fell into a washington state neighborhood. the piece of the airplane fell from a boeing 767 on to a quiet street in tent, washington. neighbors reported hearing a thud from the carbon fiber door. some say is came from a cargo plane at a nearby landing field.

>> welcome back. we look out from our roof cam near the abc7 studios. really not much of a breeze. only one flagpole interested at the mommy. they are kind ever going back and forth about which one wants to participate in this wind event. not much wind anyway. we will find out more about the forecast and a really nice weekend coming up. lisa argen has that momentarily. the hantavirus scare at yosemite national park is growing. officials have extended their initial warning on the courage village on the valley floor to the high sierra camp, an area popular with hikers. nearly 30,000 people could now be at risk from being infected from this mysterious and deadly outbreak. david wright has the story. in one of the most beautiful places on earth, a deadly disease is lurking. yosemite park rangers are warning every visitor about the outbreak of hantavirus spread by row dunce. >> actually had a mouse run across my head.

definitely scared me pretty good. >> already ate people are known to have contracted the illness. three have died in california, pennsylvania and west virginia. there may be more cases as far away as france. >> this outbreak appears to be unusual in terms of the number of people affected and certainly the number of deaths we've seen. >> the outbreak was first traced to the popular currie village campsite where row dunce had buried into the insulation of the tents. they now believe a second site was infected. last week warnings like these went out to 10,000 people who visited currie visit since june. overnight warnings went out to an additional 19,000, 29,000 park visitors in all. >> this is possibly the greatest point cluster which has occurred certainly in the united states that i'm aware of. >> early symptoms can take up to six weeks to appear, and include fatigue, fever and chills.

today it does back off. we have high pressure building in from the east and the south. due to that ridge, that is allowing the warm weather around the bay, especially inland. so we will notice that temperatures once again in the 60s and 70s by noontime. although we are looking at the chance, an isolated chance of showers and thunderstorms in the northern southern sierra today. 94 there. but once this little area of low pressure passes to the east, the fire danger is elevated here with a low relative humidity. the winds are going to kick up, especially tomorrow into sunday in the sierra nevada. elsewhere, look at that 100. back to the heat in fresno. 92 in sacramento. and back home we are looking at numbers pretty nice with mid-60s in the city. that's a little bit below average. we should see about 70 this time of year downtown. around 90 in livermore. 86 in concord. but you head far north and that's where you will see the 90s from cloverdale. 82 santa rosa. upper 70s to the low 80s. some area in the santa clara

suddenly brakes down, should you demand a replace men? one bay area couple had no fewer than 15 repairs on their new dishwasher. 7 on your side's michael finney explains what happened after that. it was nice, sparkly glasses. >> grace is telling me how her new kitchen aid dishwasher was cleaning dishes to a shine. >> a little bit of soap. >> so why is her husband washing dishes by handsome grace said eyes been a vicious cycle. >> i really was at then of my rope because, you know, it's not a cheap dishwasher. >> the couple bought it last year for $800, and it was working perfectly at first. seven months later a problem. >> it wouldn't drain. there was always water on the bottom. >> a kitchen aid repairman came out and told the couple to useless soap. simple enough, except it didn't help. >> it continued not to drain. the exact same thing. >> another repairman came.

this one said run some vinegar through a cycle. well, that didn't help either. >> and the glasses were all fill my. >> so another repairman came. this one said use more soap and run the hot water first. >> nextel tell me to stand on my left foot, turn the water on, do the vinegar wash every month. i mean, this is crazy. >> dishes were coming out dirty, so another repairman took apart the whole machine and put it back together again. after that the dishwasher blew a fuse. and so did grace. >> i was hysterical. >> by summer the dishwasher had undergone not five repairs or six or even seven, but fifteen repairs in all! grace had to skip work each time to wait for repair people. then the final blow. >> we turned it on, nothing. totally dead. >> grace shows us how the dishwasher won't even turn on

now. their kitchen aid warranty company was about to send another repairman. grace wanted to barricade the doors. >> i said to them, i said what do you mean you are going to come out? i said no more. it's dead as a doornail now. >> she contacted 7 on your side. we contacted kitchen aid, and sure enough, the company came through, offering the couple a brand new dishwasher. kitchen aid said after review, we believe this should have been elevated sooner, and we apologize to miscellaneous garity. once we were alerted of the issue, we were happy to replace her dishwasher. >> i feel like a little kid waking up, you know, with lots of birthday presents. >> state law requires manufacturing to repair defective products that are under warranty, and if they can't be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, the consumer can get a refund or replacement. now if you have a problem with a new appliance, let me know about it. i'm michael finney, 7 on your
