live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc7 news >> in the news this saturday morning, a drama plays out at sea as two kidnapped children are rescued from a stolen boat. next we will tell you about the man arrested for all that. and this fire in lake county is three times bigger this morning than it was just last night. we will have the latest on people living nearby. good morning, everyone, i'm terry mcsweeney. >> the weekend is here. that means outs door activity for many. here's lisa argen with a look at the forecast. >> hi, terry. good morning, everyone. couldn't be a better day. we will have a lot of sunshine. starting out with some clouds over the bay around hayward and oakland this morning.

temperatures are cool, about 50 in the north bay. mid-50s elsewhere. but if you go through the morning hours, by noontime we are in the 60s around the bay. mid-70s inland. but by 4:00 this afternoon when we reach the high temperatures, about 90 in the try valley. mid-70s around the bay. sunshine and 60s at our coast. we will see just a the bit of fog sneak in. the winds will be kicking up in the afternoon, the sea breeze. but otherwise we are right around normal. we do have temperatures coming down tomorrow, going back up the rest of the work week. i'll spell it all out for you coming up. terry. >> thanks, lisa. this morning two children kidnapped by their father and taken for a ride on a stolen boat are safe. three-year-old brooklyn and two-year-old devin maffei were rescued last night off the california coast. this morning their father is in custody. we have the story from the coast guard pier in monterey. >> the coast guard cutter hawksbill came in unleashed. the stolen sailboat in which 43-year-old christopher maffei

sailed away with his two children, the four-year-old and two-year-old on tuesday. south san francisco police sergeant bruce mcphillips announced the successful recovery of the children. >> i'm glad to announce that devin and brooklyn maffei have been rescued from their three day ordeal at sea. >> the coast guard received notice friday morning the boat had been spotted. after launching several craft, they shadowed it until they were able to come close enough to contact christopher maffei. >> we asked if we could put a boarding team on board and he said that would be fine. >> back in south san francisco the children's grandmother was elated to hear that the children were recovered and that they were fine. >> this is the best. the best. when i get my two grandchildren i'm going to hug them and never let them go. >> the officials say the children appear fine and unharmed. the coast guard and fbi and several other police agencies, including south san francisco police, started tracking the sailboat after it was spotted by a fishing vessel 50 miles off the san mateo coast.

south san francisco police, with christopher maffei in custody, sped off from the pier to south san francisco. maffei will be charged with kidnapping. abc7 news. abc7 news has learned this is not match's first brush with the law. a woman living in clear lake says back in 1989 he was say assaulted by him when she lived in the bay area. we have that part of the story. >> in 1989 rhonda st of raub was working as a park ranger aid at an event in san mateo county. her duty was to keep cars out of the area. that's when she encountered christopher maffei, only 20 at the time, who was upset he couldn't get through. >> he jumps out, punches me out, tries to run me over with his truck. i fortunately rolled into my vehicle, and he sped off. i got his license number.

i struggled, pregnant at that time. >> straub said she miscarried the next day. straub at the time used her married name, schmidt, sued mateo parks and rec department and received an undisclosed amount through compensation. she now lives in clear lake. she contacted us after seeing him on the news. the san mateo courts also confirmed in 2009 maffei was charged with grand theft, but the case was dismissed. abc7 news also obtained a copy of the restraining order against maffei. the court granted the order because there was reason to believe he might take the children outside of the u.s. after it was revealed maffei had quit his job, closed his bank accounts, got rid of his assets and sold his home. the order also points out maffei had lived in thailand and had several bank accounts there.

>> leeann melendez, abc7 news. >> maffei is scheduled for a court hearing in two weeks. right now up in lake county a wildfire continues to burn out of control, but fire officials have now lifted mandatory evacuations. the scotts fire is burning near the blue lakes area on cow mountain west of scotts valley road and about 8 miles east of ukiah. sky 7hd shot these dramatic scenes as flames devoured brush and timber in the area. the fire began yesterday afternoon and spread very quickly and has burned more than 1600 acres at last report. the plan for today is to bring in air tankers from sonoma county since the ukiah airbase is low on fire retard can't. this morning core ron nors are trying to identify the body of a teenage girl found

yesterday off a rural road. they don't believe it is missing morgan hills sierra lamar. >> they looked down over a dense area of the county where a body was found just after 9:00 a.m. >> a passerby was in the area off of 101 on cannon drive in san benito county. gets down from his vehicle and sees what he believes is a dead body about 100 feet or so off the roadway. >> the sergeant handles media relations for the santa clara county sheriff's office that was called in to assist. >> the san benito county sheriffs, they are short-staffed today. they reached out to us as part of a mutual aid request not only for additional resources, but also for spokesmen and media purposes. >> the sergeant said they didn't get the call of sierra lamar. they are the agency handling the case of the teenager who has

been missing out of morgan hills since march 16th. they confirmed that the body found is that of a female. closes close to the investigation tell us it's a young hispanic female but they do not believe it's lamar. those who live near the spot where the body was discovered aren't surprised to hear what happened. >> seems like a good spot for it because there's nobody around here. last week it was a mattress. there is always something. >> it's wooded. a lot of people hike and ride horses through here. it's right next to the freeway so it's not unlikely that somebody could dump a body and get on the freeway and go. >> sources tell me that it does appear that the body was dumped there as opposed to that being where the death actually happened. again, they do not believe it is sierra lamar. in san benito county, abc7 news. pittsburgh police are looking for the person who shot a man to death at a busy local park. it happened about 7:00 last night at buchanan park. police say the male victim was shot near the bochy ball courts. the park was crowded at the time

and police are talking to potential witnesses but so far mow suspect description has been released. this morning san francisco police are searching for a missing teenager, 16-year-old vanessa dominges was last seen tuesday night leaving her linden street home in hayes valley. they said the student as asthma, but she didn't take her inhaler with her. if you see her, police call the police department. tomorrow is the too-year-old anniversary of the san bruno pipeline explosion and fire. it's been a long two years for the people who live there and the recovery is far from over. heather ishimaru brings us up-to-date. and san jose police are trying to track down a carjacking suspect who got caught on camera and now police would like

[ male announcer ] progresso. you gotta taste this soup. >> the san francisco giants dedicated their game against the los angeles dodgers last night to highway patrol officer kenyon youngstrom. the team held a moment of silence to honor his service and sacrifice. officer youngstrom was killed in a shootout tuesday in alamo. the gunman was shot to death by another officer. vic lee road with the chp along that same stretch of road. >> the outpouring of sadness and support from the public just keeps growing. here at the chp field officer where officer kenyon youngstrom works. >> i think it underscores in their mind, wow, these individuals are human beings just like me, they are connected to family, they are connected to friends.

>> the officer sam morgan has been with the chp some 30 years. it's not the first time he's heard the radio call, an 11-99, officer down. every time the same reaction. >> your mind starts racing. sometimes your heart sinks. >> and when that officer dies -- >> each one, a piece of you goes with that individual. there's never a time where you say i'm over that. you just learn how to manage it. sometimes there are thoughts of anger, sometimes there are thoughts of sadness, bewilderment, and on and on the emotions go. >> there are also personal reflections. officer morgan is married with two children. >> reflections such as what if it was me, how would my wife and children handle it, how would my family respond. >> you are brought to deathly into sharply focus with your own mortality, and you begin to really see just how risky the job can be sometimes. >> it's not something officer morgan dwells on, but it's always in the back of his mind. the potential dangers of each traffic stop, no matter how

small the infraction. >> are they friend, are they foe, will they yield to the authority of the officer peacefully? will i have to get into a physical confrontation with this individual? most of the calls to which we respond to, we go home without incident, we go home without injury, but there can always be that one call that can pretty much be your last call. >> well, as officer morgan told me, he and his fellow officers are no different than you or i. all they want to do is to do their job well, and at the end of the day go home to their loved ones. vic lee, abc7 news. >> san jose police have released a surveillance tape of a brazen daylight carjacking last week. we've high lighted the video for you. in the upper left you see a woman coming out of her car. police say a man got in the vehicle and put a knife to her throat. woman tries to flag down another

car. the suspect, joined by an accomplice, nearly hits her driving away. the 70-year-old victim suffered minor injuries. police need your help to capture the suspects, described as men in their 20s. two fundraisers in lafayette for a college student missing for now almost a week. 28-year-old brett olson of lafayette a is missing. he became separated from his friends. he was last seen on shore. friends say he had been drinking. a $10,000 reward is being offered to help find brett. well, new this morning the palo alto city council is considering a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries from opening up shop. according to the bay area news group, three council member are seeking to fight the measure on the november ballot that would allow as many as three dispensaries to operate in palo alto. they say it would lead to secondary effects in

being infected by the disease-infected mosquito last month. all victims are over the age of 80. it's one of the worst years on record for west nile virus, prompting the unusual amount of fogging to wipe out mosquitoes. last night parts of discovery bay were fogged and byron. >> that's going on. also a lot of other things going on, including a lot of beach stuff available if you find the right beach. >> yeah, there is also a beach hazard down by the monterey bay. that's due to rip current possibilities there. so dangerous conditions there. elevated fire danger tomorrow in the sierra nevada. near ideal weather here. we always worry about fire weather, even though the relative humidity. low fog and clouds outside. you notice the marine layer in patches. it's about 1,000 feet deep. but high pressure will beholding on for another day. stronger high pressure so that's

why today will be the warmer day of the weekend. you notice the high clouds and fog most le off shor but there is some around hayward and oakland this morning, also santa rosa reporting cloudy skies. it's not as cloudy as it could be but this morning a little gray for some of you. 55 in fremont with 57 in oakland and 52 in napa. mid-50s in the cities. not too bad around the bay. we will be looking at changes today in terms of a little bit of a breeze through the delta, but that's not going to inhibit that strong solar radiation from allowing you to warm up near 90 today. the coastal fog, that should be right now. we will look for another nice day today with the cooling trend beginning tomorrow on the order of about five degrees or so. that's due to this system here. today it does back off. high pressure is building in from the south and the east. with this big ridge of high pressure we are getting the

warmer weather, the more compressed marine layer, and less of that on shore flow. but once this area of low pressure begins to overtake our weather, we will see things switch around a little bit. we talked about the beach hazard to the south of us for strong rip currents, and this is anywhere from around monterey state beach, marina state beach. do be careful if you are headed to the beach today. tempt being i know with temperatures very comfortable. sierra nevada today could see some isolated showers not only in the southern sierra with temperatures in the mid-90s, but the northern sierra as well. with the risk of lightning, fire danger always a concern. but tomorrow it gets elevated as an area of low pressure heads east. it will allow for breezy winds, relative humidity below 15% in this region here. and back closer to home we are looking at 70s along the central coast around big sur with 92 in sacramento. so back around the bay mid-70s from sunnyvale to low 80s in los

gatos, 76 milpitas. on the peninsula mid-70s for menlo park. the art and wine festival around mountain view today, 76 degrees. giants game we are talking low 60s to get going, mid-60s by 3:00, 4:00. 82 novato. numbers warm as you head toward there. nice afternoon in oakland, 27. average high mid-70s. and 72 today. and you see the warmer numbers like yesterday, 90 for antioch and down by the monterey bay it's clear now. it will warm up quickly from watsonville, mid-70s to gilroy around 90. the accuweather seven-day forecast, today the warmer of the two days out of the weekend. a little breezy tomorrow and we are staying below normal by monday. but tuesday we recover. offshore flow by wednesday, thursday and friday, and it will feel pretty good out there, but very, very dry conditions. >> if summer has got to go, i'm glad that it lets us down easy. >> we have a lot of summer-like

>> breaking news out of afghanistan where overnight a suicide bomber has killed at least six people in central kabul.

the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack. the bbc is reporting some of the victims are children. they said the target was a us intelligence facility nearby. they say all of the dead were civilians. again, the bbc said some are children. a spokesman for the military said coalition forces are all accounted for. the blast happened not far from nato headquarters and the u.s. embassy in afghanistan. campaign 2012 makes a bay area pit stop this weekend. republic van vice presidential candidate paul ryan was seen in sparks, nevada yesterday. that's just outside of reno. he's going to be guest of honor at a fund raiser at the danville home of a former 49er and his wife. brent jones. that will be followed by a visit in mountain view for a pep rally with supporters. tomorrow night ryan will attend a fundraiser in fresno. the romney-ryan ticket is slamming the obama

administration for yesterday's weak jobs report for the month of august. only 96,000 new jobs were created last month, 35,000 fewer than expected. the jobless rate fell to 8.1%, but only because a lot of people stopped looking for work. in fact, the u.s. workforce has fallen to its lowest level in 31 years. >> this morning more than two dozen bus drivers in the north bay are facing the prospect of losing their jobs. the golden gate transit could be laying off as many as 36 bus drivers. off as many as 36 bus drivers. it could happen if they lose the contract to provide bus service in marin county. right now they pay to operate their bus routes. but under a renegotiated contract, it could save the county millions and the transit district could keep the contract but provide 25% less service. it will be discussed during a september 17th meeting. on the other side of the

coin, bay area companies will be filling more than 300 positions during next week's job fair. that event will be at the hotel whitcom on market street in san francisco from noon to four on wednesday. we have details about that on abc7news.com under "see it on tv." the president made no mention of the weak economy in his weekly address this morning. instead he called on americans to mark the 11th anniversary of the september 11th terrorist tick attacks. >> the last decade has been a difficult one, but together we have answered those questions and come back stronger as a nation. we took the fight to al-qaeda, decimating their leadership and putting them on the path to defeat. and thanks to the courage and skill of our intelligence personnel and armed forces, osama bin laden will never threaten america again. >> the president notes the 9/11 anniversary is being commemorated on tuesday by public service activities around the country. in the republican address wyoming senator john barraso said the country is not better off than four years ago when bush was president.

then right before he took the stage, inspiration. there was a stool there and some fellow kept asking me if i wanted to set down. when i saw the stool sitting there, it gave me the idea. >> and i just -- >> he acknowledges he stumbled a bit up there and that he went longer than he was supposed to. but, quote, when people are applauding so much, it takes you ten minutes to say five minutes worth. after the speech eastwood went backstage where he says paul ryan thanked him. they were very enthusiastic and we were all laughing. >> you are absolutely crazy. >> the speech immediately became a media phenomenon, but eastwood himself had no idea until the next day. tonight the hollywood legend is unapologetic of his detractors, he says, quote, they are obviously on the left. >> thank you. thank you very much. an eight-foot sinkhole swallowed the car of a san francisco man this week. he's a law student at duke university. he was turning around near the campus. as you see, he dropped straight into the ground. the gaping hole was not visible from the street and was not marked off. but he said he wasn't the first to run into it. a truck driver had apparently got his tire stuck in the hole the night before, but his vehicle was too big to go in. crews put up caution tape, but by the next day it had blown away. the pole holding up the caution tape had blown over and the hole was not visible from inside of the car so he got a look at the inside of the street. flash flooding almost cost a truck driver his life outside of phoenix, arizona. his truck got stuck in the mud along a rising creek. how would be like to be on the roof of that car? he had to climb on the roof when rushing water slowly washed the truck into midstream.

a rescue team used an aerial ladder and ropes to secure the truck and driver and then got hem out of there by raft. the operation took two hours. i wonder what went through his mind when he was standing on top of the truck. two inches of rain on the phoenix area. this morning the faa is trying to figure out how a landing gear door from a jet plane broke off and fell into a washington state neighborhood. there's the piece of the plane. it somehow fell from the boeing 767 on to a quiet street in kent, washington. neighbors reported hearing a thud from the carbon fiber door. some say is came from a cargo plane at a nearby landing field. they are trying to track down the plane and are not releasing the name of the company yet. no damage done fortunately there. >> yeah. >> what's going on weather-wise? you are walking about a cooler one? but not a cold one coming up? >> exactly. i like those words. >> i have been listening to you all morning and i think i have

growing. officials have extended their initial warning on the curry village on the valley floor to the high sierra camp, an area popular with hikers. nearly 30,000 people could now be at risk from being infected from this mysterious and deadly outbreak. david wright has the story. in one of the most beautiful places on earth, a deadly disease is lurking. yosemite park rangers are warning every visitor about the outbreak of hantavirus spread by rodents. >> actually had a mouse run across my head. definitely scared me pretty good. >> already eight people are known to have contracted the illness. as of today, three have died in california, pennsylvania and west virginia. there may be more cases as far away as france. >> this outbreak appears to be unusual in terms of the number of people affected and certainly the number of deaths we've seen. >> the outbreak was first traced to the popular curry village campsite where rodents had buried into the insulation of

the tents. officials now believe a second site was infected. last week warnings like these went out to 10,000 people who visited curry village since june. overnight warnings went out to an additional 19,000 visitors, 29,000 park visitors in all. >> this is possibly the greatest point cluster which has occurred certainly in the united states that i'm aware of. >> early symptoms can take up to six weeks to appear, and include fatigue, fever and chills. those quickly give way to coughing and breathing problems as the lungs fill with fluid. the worst part is there is no known treatment or cure. >> there's really nothing you can do preemptively if you are exposed to hantavirus. >> for one of america's oldest and most popular national parks, a serious threat. yosemite's majestic beauty attracts visitors worldwide. now that could mean a worldwide

public health hazard. david wright, abc news, los angeles. the california department of public health is expanding its recall of red vines candy made in the union city production center. in addition to the black licorice products recalled last month, the dph is warning these other products could have more than the allowable amount of lead. added is family mix, mixed bites, snaps and black licorice twists. the bags are labeled with expiration dates of february, 2013. eating the candy could lead to twice the amount of lead for children. fans of the space shuttle will get a unique look at the spacecraft in just a couple weeks. n.a.s.a. is transporting the space shuttle endeavour from florida to a museum in los angeles. during it's journey, the 747 will do low level fly offense across urban areas across the country.

fire danger. elevated fire danger in the sierra nevada this weekend. leave doppler 7 hd shows most of the fog offshore but there is some even around santa rosa this morning. you are waking up to some clouds and cool temperatures. 49 santa rosa, 52 in napa with 57 in mountain view. you have the art and wine festival there today. numbers should be pretty comfortable. we will see the warm numbers in the inland east bay. the coastal clouds overnight have brought us the patchy fog along the peninsula. but we aren't seeing as much as we usually see. another nice day today. the fog will continue to thicken through the overnight hours, leading to a cooler day tomorrow. on the average of around two to five degrees of cooling, but still plenty of sunshine out there. we are looking at two systems affecting us. one is this area of low pressure that will influence our weather tomorrow. it has backed off for the time being.

yesterday, today, allowing for high pressure to build in from the east and from the south. while that's warming us up, it's also bringing up some subtropical moisture. you can see a little of it here. that's directed toward the sierra nevada today. but to the south of us we've got warmer weather and we've got pretty nice beach, a beautiful beaches here. but a dangerous northwest swell for strong rip currents along the central coast. if you are headed to the beach, keep that in mind for sure. so with the showers and thunderstorms, the possibility from the desert through the southern sierra, the northern sierra, we are looking at the isolated chance. numbers still warm in the northern lake area with 80 there. 90 yosemite. then we see the high fire danger increase for northwest nevada through the west of the weekend. back home our temperatures will cool off tomorrow. today, though, even with the southwest wind, up to 29 miles an hour. it should be warm with the upper 80s to near 90 later on. you have the breezy winds right now. they will back off through the delta later on but our sea

breeze will check up, keeping the numbers in the 60s. in the city today. 71 oakland, 75 fremont. look for about 90 our warmest inland east bay, as well as morgan hill and 88 gilroy. it's sunny, will be sunny along the central coast. what a day in the city today with numbers in the low 60s to start out. mid-60s later on for the giants game. cooling trend gets underway tomorrow. still below normal monday but look what happens the rest of the work week. we are warming it up. temperatures well above normal. an offshore flow but still cool and comfortable at our coast. >> yet another september to remember. lisa, thanks a lot. well, if your brand new alliance suddenly breaks down should you demand a replacement? one bay area couple had no fewer than 15 repairs on their new dishwasher. 7 on your side's michael finney explains what happened next.

every month. put less soap on it. i mean, this is crazy. >> dishes were coming out dirty, so another repairman took apart the whole machine and put it back together again. after that the dishwasher blew a fuse. and so did grace. >> i was hysterical. >> by summer the dishwasher had undergone not five repairs or six or even seven, but fifteen repairs in all! grace had to skip work each time to wait for repair people. then the final blow. >> we turned it on, nothing. totally dead. >> grace shows us how the dishwasher won't even turn on now. their kitchenaid warranty company was about to send another repairman. grace wanted to barricade the doors. >> i said to them, i said what do you mean you are going to come out? i said no more. it's dead as a doornail now. >> she contacted 7 on your side. we contacted kitchenaid, and sure enough, the company came through, offering the couple a
