>> ama: the search is over tonight. a young man from lafayette is found dead in the sacramento river. >> alan: we begin with developing news in the search for brett ol' ol'son. his family confirmed he was found in the sacramento river. he vanished after setting out on the river near chico. we're live in lafayette. there was a lot of hope and effort that went into finding him. reporter: yeah, and in the last week since he was first reported miss, lots of people near lafayette participated in the search and helped to keep the awareness he was missing, going.

in fact, earlier this week a lot of the students from his high school where he graduated a couple years ago,ing a -- they climbed up a hill and scrawled out a message in chalk that reads, simply, brett. brett olson was last seen at a mass inner tubing event. a large-scale search was launched, including fliers around his home town, andcheck chico and surrounding areas. a local burrito restaurant here held a fundraiser friday, and raised $4,000 to help pay for the continuing search. but again, this morning, the body was discovered by people fishing along the sacramento river, and his family has positively identified the body. chico police today thanked everyone for their seven -- search efforts. >> a week helping to look for him, and unfortunately it came to a tragic ending, but their

efforts were not in vain. they did the right thing. reporter: this is youtube video taken on sunday where he was last season. he was one of hundreds of college students who turned out for the labor day weekend river float near a spot called beer can beach and according to chico police, brett drowned. there are no signs of foul play, and any results from toxicology are not going to be available for another couple weeks. reporting live in lafayette. abc-7 news. >> alan: milpitas police are investigating after a 7-eleven employee was found shot to death inside the convenience store. the store is closed tonight. investigators say the 62-year-old employee was discovered lying on the floor around 2:15 yesterday morning. >> detectives come out for the investigation, revealed that the victim was deceased at the scene. we're treating this as a

homicide investigation at this time. >> police are not saying if the store was robbed. the 7-eleven convenience store chain issued a statement calling it a random shooting and they're working with police temperature the investigation. >> ama: who years ago today a gas pipeline explosion left a san bruno neighborhood in ruins. it was traced to an incomplete weld that led to a rupture of a 30-inch transmission line. pg&e has been yet to be find for what federal regulators call a number of fail you'd. eight people died in the explosion. i destroyed eight homes. tonight, neighbors are commemorating the second anniversary during a ceremony happening right now, and that's where abc-7 news reporter lillian kim is tonight. reporter: dozens of people have gathered here at into san bruno's city park. the ceremony is about to get

underway. the chairs have been set up to face a remembrance plaque placed on a metal sculpture here at the park. that plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony and will have each of the names of the eight people who died as a result of the pg&e pipeline explosion which took place in this neighborhood two years ago today. in addition to the eight deaths, 38 homes were destroyed in the blast. several more people were injured and dozen more homes were damaged. we spoke to a homeowner who lost here home. she said it was important to come to today's ceremony for her. >> just to acknowledge and remember and -- just to remember these people, and their families, and be here with their families, if they're here to be with them, and i think this is the right thing for san bruno to do to make something permanent, to acknowledge these people. reporter: as for the neighborhood, it's now a full-blown construction zone.

crews work six days of the week to rebuild the homes at that time were destroyed. eight have been completed. 13 more are underway. it's unclear what will happen with the rest of the lots. live in san bruno. lillian kim. abc-7 news. >> alan: the walnut creek pedestrian who was run over and killed last night has been identified. the san jose mercury news says the woman is 52-year-old sherry hix of santa barbara. the second victim is a-year-old girl who -- a 12-year-old girl who is in the hospital. last night this red truck came spreading down north main street and plowed into a group of people. the driver is 53-year-old man. he was injured in the crash and now faces charges of vehicular manslaughter. in san francisco, pedestrian end up being taken to the hospital after being hit by a muni bus at market and jones street this morning. police are trying to figure out exactly hat happened. there's no word on the condition of the person who was hit by the

bus. >> ama: the economy topped the agenda today for both presidential candidates. president obama was in florida where he questioned the, quote, arithmetic being proposed by his challenger, mitt romney. >> they couldn't answer questions about how they'd pay for $5 trillion in new tax cuts and $2 trillion in new defense spending, without raising taxes on the middle class. that's not bold leadership. that's bad math. >> romney attended church services with his family in massachusetts today. he also attacked the obama administration's record when it comes to creating jobs. >> if this president's re-elected you're going to see chronic lie unemployment continue for another four years or longer. >> ama: president obama is scheduled to come to the bay area for another fundraising swing on october 8th. the san francisco chronicle is reporting it will resemble the president's trip in february,

[sirens] >> alan: it's been one of the deadliest days in iraq. officials say more than 90 people have been killed and more than 360 wounded in at least 21 separate bombings and shootings in 13 cities. the attacks began before dawn. the gunmen killing soldiers in an army post in central iraq. a few hours later a car exploded and a lot where re cutes to waiting in line for a job. iraq's interior minister is blaming al qaeda in iraq. >> ama: many people hear the word tornado they think of funnel clouds in the midwest. but this home video shows a tornado striking somewhere else. new york city. at least two twisters touched down yesterday, one in brooklyn and the other in queens. one tornado caused damage in a

beach front community called breezy point. >> all of a sudden i heard the cracking of a utility pole and the crackling of electricity, and then just 15 seconds of intense wind, white noise, things crashing all around me. >> ama: nobody was hurt. most of the profit -- profit damage -- profit damage was mine you're. more than two dozen bus drivers in the north bay may be losing their job. golden gate transit district could lay off as many as 30 bus drivers. the cuts could happen if the transit district loses a contract to provide bus service in marin county. currently the county pays golden gate to operate their bust routes. the latest proposal calls for less service which would save the county millions of dollars but cause workers their jobs.
