with this. >> an abc7 news exclusive with the man who helped bring two abducted children to safety. good evening. i'm ama dates. >> and i'm alan wang. it began last week when two children were taken from south san francisco, and today a key person who helped track down the children spoke exclusively with abc7 news about an encounter on the ocean and the clues that tipped him off. >> his answers to my questions were so far off that that's what what -- that's what made me think there was something wrong. >> russ was operating his commercial fishing boat off the coast of half moon bay

when he pulled up alongside another vessel. the man in a 40-foot sailboat said he needed to get to hawaii. >> i said we are 50 miles 50 mi. you have another 1750 miles to go, and you are out of fuel? i don't think so. >> he had no idea the man was 43-year-old christopher moffet wanted for abducting his three-year-old daughter and two-year-old son. at the time his wife was trying to get a restraining order against him. he told him to get fuel in half moon bay. his answer at that time was, no, if i go in there i will have to stay which i found another red flag went up. >> he called the coast guard and found the man had stolen the sailboat. the coast guard sent him photos of the missing children, and it was a match. >> i called in and i said i know where that boat is. >> a coast guard cuter caught up with him and escorted him back to half moon bay where he surrendered without incident. >> more people should pay

attention to what is going on and don't be afraid to say something when there are children involved. that's why this worked out good. everybody played a part and did it professionally. it worked out great. >> the children were unharmed and reunited with their mother on friday. their father was booked on two counts of child abduction. two children were rescued from a plane that crashed into the ocean. it happened 38 miles off the coast between monterey and morrow bay. they received a distress call this afternoon. a crew from the san francisco station was sent to rescue a 70-year-old man and his son in the plane. wins were howling and the swells were swamping the boat when a rescue swimmer arrived. >> we swam over to the aircraft and put the strap around the 70-year-old gentleman and hoisted them out. >> the elderly man was

suffering from hypothermia. his son was also rescued, but they refused medical treatment. they were going from santa barbara to canada when it went down. there was another rescue this time in pacifica. this video is courtesey of one of our viewers. a 16-year-old boy stuck about 30 feet from the water. a chp helicopter lowered a paramedic down as he was hoisted to a landing area. the boy was taken to hospital with possible hand injuries. we are learning more about the deadly crash in walnut creek that took the life of a pedestrian and severely injured another. thomas roman is live in walnut creek where a car plowed into a crowd of people. thomas? >> alan, tonight we learned that the woman hit and killed by a pick up truck here in walnut creek last night was visiting from santa barbara. g getting a first look at the driver of that truck. >> walnut creek police have put a face to the man who they say drove the pick up truck on

north main street and one woman lled one woman and injured another. saturday night ems crews had to extricate him from the mangled truck between a light post and a concrete planter. they were walking with two men in front of the marriott hotel. >> the driver was released from the hospital and he was transferred to the county jail where he was worked with one count of vehicular manslaughter. >> he was released from john muir hospital. that's where the woman who survived the truck's impact was taken in what police call grave condition. >> we are just identifying the victim at this point as an adult female. >> teddy bears mark the spot where the truck hit the women. a trail of painted dots shows how far she traveled. she died on impact. the coroner released the name of the victim. sh she was from santa barbara. >> identified her as sherry hicks. she was a 52-year-old white female.

>> reporter: the incident happened at 6:15 on saturday night. the pick up was traveling fast southbound on north main street when it veered off the road and on to the sidewalk. sunday night monica came by to drop off some flowers. she was just up the street when the accident happened. >> it was really sad. my heart goes out to the family and a woman here lost her life. we haven't seen what happened to the daughter, but it is heartbreaking. >> first reports were the two victims were actually mother and daughter, but walnut creek police will not confirm the relationship. they will confirm that the unidentified victim is in critical condition at john muir medical center. thomas roman, abc7 news. >> thank you. the search for a missing man from lafayette ended tragically. his body was discovered in the sacramento river. he vanished while taking part in the chico float. the glen county sheriff believe there's is no foul

play and olson drowned. an autopsy will take place on tuesday. they credited the dozens of volunteers who joined the search for olson. >> it is significant they spent potentially a week looking for him. unfortunately it came to a tragic ending but their efforts were not in vein. they did the right thing. >> olson's family and friends plan to honor him with a candlelight vigil on tuesday evening. it will start at 7:00 p.m. olson graduated from there and his siblings attend the school. it has been two years since the deadly gas explosion in san bruno. that's when a high pressure main exploded under the neighborhood. eight people died, and the firestorm destroyed more than three dozen homes. a special vigil was held in san bruno to remember the victims. lilian kim is there, and she joins us with a look at the event. lilian? >> alan, the ceremony was to

more. in addition to the eight who died, several others were injured including sandy arnold. she is still recovering. >> it is slowly coming back. it has been a long road. i have had lots of operations and lots more to go. this year i'm walking. i wasn't last year. >> others who survived the blast took part in a less formal ceremony in the neighborhood. they held a moment of silence at the intersection of clairemont and glen view drive where most of the destruction occurred. >> it seemed like yesterday every day. there is not one time i don't think about it. >> despite the lingering pain and emotions, many have chosen to move back to the neighborhood. eight homes have been rebuilt. 13 are in the process. >> everybody is friendly or everybody that you see everybody smiles and says hi because we all know -- we all went through the same thing. >> in case you want to see the plaque in person it is part of this new metal sculpture in front of the city park near the gazebo.

anniversary of the september 11th attacks. tonight officials are warning of new potential danger. abc news has obtained a bulletin that warns of a lone wolf attack from a single terrorist. officials say despite the concern they are not on high alert. one example is in may of 2010 when a man tried to blowup a car parked in times square.

these types of attacks are ized threats bytrack. al-qaeda are being down graded mainly because most of the organization's top leaders are dead or in prison. federal recognition of a link between cancer and rescuers could come as soon as tomorrow. the national institute for occupational safety and health will recognize that. it is the first step in getting certain cancers covered by the 9/11 compensation fund. students in the nation's third largest school district will not be in class tomorrow. chicago teachers called a strike. the strike comes after months of negotiations. the issues preventing a new contract are standardized student testing and teacher evaluations. >> after the initial phase in of this new evaluation system, it could result in almost 6,000 teachers or nearly 30% of our membership being discharged within one or two years. >> this is totally unnecessary. it is avoidable, and our kids
