in new york at the same time other events took place across the country. . >> -- president obama and the first lady laid a wreath at the gone. closer to home shining show of honor from san francisco firefighters. one of many ceremonies in the bay area to mark this anniversary. good morning i'm kristen sze. and i'm cheryl jennings. observances took place in union city to remember passengers on flight 93 on its way to san francisco from new jersey. a large crowd gathered in shanksville, pennsylvania near a wall which holds the name of the passengers and crew who died. passengers took hold of terrorists before it crashed in what used to be a field. katie, you talked to a woman who lost her mother? >> reporter: i did her name is carol o'hare and her mother 79-year-old moving from new jersey to danville, to

live with her. carol says 11 years later the anniversary is like reliving that day. from song to silence memorial service in union city honors passengers and crew of san francisco bound flight 93. >> christian adams, todd beamer. >> reporter: carol o'hare of danville lost her mother 11 years ago today. >> i woke up to a happy day my mother was moving from california to new jersey. >> reporter: that chapter of their life to the would never come to be. >> the day devolved from there not knowing where she was, not finding anything out until i was on the phone with my sister in new jersey. we saw it on the crawl line on cnn that flight 93 had crashed in rural pennsylvania. i think everything went to

hell from there for everybody, especially my mom. >> reporter: michael emerson created this place of reflection. a marine, determined to not let the victims be forgotten. >> when i told family members i was coming out with flowers, i said -- they said i would like to come, then the mayor and friends and citizens are here. every year i'm out here to remember them, honor them not just the heroes of flight 93 also knows in the pentagon, new york and all fallen heroes of our military. >> reporter: so many heroes were made and lost on that day. the people onboard flight 93 taking a fatal vow over shanksville, pennsylvania. >> that american spirit rose up and they weren't going to let any lives be taken. they should ought be remembered for that >> reporter: this -- this memorial features each of the 40 names at the far end is the

circle of remembrance which has three, 10 foot high stones that feature the story of flight 93, all donated, all so people in the bay area would have a special place on this day. katie marzullo, abc7 news. san francisco firefighters held their own 9/11 salute. all 43 stations in san francisco paused to remember the 343 firefighters and paramedics who died trying to save people in the burning towers in new york city. they read the names of each one of those first responders. fire chief white, police chief and mayor lee all attended the ceremony at station 7. the firefighters do this every year and the chief says that won't be changing any time soon. >> there's a special bond, brotherhood, sisterhood in the fire service, in law enforcement as well and so, we

just want to keep that spirit alive and the memory alive some said did you want to stop at 10 years? i think it is appropriate to have this type of ceremony every year. >> 53 new firefighter cadets were also on hand. the mayor and chief said it is important for them to see the responsibility they will have as firefighters and to show them how much the public appreciates the job. >> firefighters in san jose marked their fallen colleagues at station 1 on north market a moment of silence followed by memorial bell-ringing. chief mcdonald addressed his crews over the pa system. >> several other tributes took place across the country in morning. >> president obama took part in several, including a special ceremony at the pentagon. praised americans for coming to the to help the victims of the attacks and their families. mitt romney greeted firefighters at o'hare international airport. he also took part in a moment of silence to commemorate 9/11. he released a statement saying americans united one nation god in their determination to stand tall for peace and freedom. alarming reminder that threats continue within our borders. new report from congressional investigators indicates deadly radioactive material may not be properly secured in u.s. hospitals. an estimated 1200 hospitals across the country are deemed high risk for storing radioactive material which could be used to make dirty bombs. hospitals use the material in cancer treatments. the reports calls on the nuclear regulatory commission to regulate upgrades to hospital security issues >> country home to the terrorist who attacked america is slowly rebuilding.

bay area non-profit is major part of the effort to restore afghanistan's ability to feed its families. this video shows a founder visiting one of the farmers in afghanistan who is benefit going the charity's agricultural expertise. they just received new multi-million dollar contract from an agency for international development to work with millions of farmers and families throughout afghanistan. >> we introduced the grapevine, prune the vine, double the yield. >> we are happy with this partnership and we think it is going to deliver success on the ground for the afghan and american people. >> they are helping farmers export crops to international markets including india, saudi arabia and canada. you can find out more about roots of peace in san rafael on our website. abc7news.com.

student found over the weekend in the sacramento river. a fisherman discovered brett olson's body sunday. the sheriff believes he died, an autopsy will be done today. family and friends plan to honor him with a vigil. olson graduated from acalanes and two younger siblings attend the school. desperate national search underway for a bone marrow match for a san francisco boy because of his racial background he faces difficult odds. terry mcsweeney is live at san jose state university where something is happening now that could save his life. >> reporter: relatives of 2-year-old jeremy kong as well as members of the asian-american donor table, a lot of people coming in, a lot of people signing up encouraged trying to find a match for jeremy not like the

usual trying to fan a needle in a haystack this is like trying to fan a need until a particular haystack. >> he play, laughs, dances like a 2-year-old, normal, everyday except his hair is gone. >> reporter: 2-year-old jeremy has a rare form of leukemia and no one on the current registry is a match. pressure little time to conduct the search. jeremy needs a transplant at the end of his third round of chemotherapy in november the match is most likely to come from an asian donor. asians less than 1% on the recently city. -- registry. his says it may be because of a superstition. >> we told somebody in chinatown and the mom went, i don't want to hear it. it is like a negative connotation that someone has leukemia or a form of cancer. >> reporter: part of the reason today's drive is on a

in san jose investigators looking into what caused early morning apartment fire that injured two people and left a dozen without a home. the fire broke out before 3:00 this morning. a viewer shot this video showing the upstairs unit fully engulfed flames shooting out of windows and attic three units were badly damaged, one sent to the hospital with second degree burns another injured after jumping from the second floor. the red cross is helping the displaced residents. winds weren't much winds. >> hopefully no more fire danger. >> just the heat missing the other two, winds and dryness out there that comes with the fire danger. we are getting close to that time of the year so it is a good reminder. calm conditions this morning, calm conditions for the better part of next couple of days
