boa both countries appear to be angered by a movie made in america. hillary clinton strongly condemned the attack in benghazi. secretary clinton said the u.s. deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religs use beliefs of others. the new movie is being supported by terry jones. he said the movie is not designed to attack muslims. this morning, u.s. embassies throughout arab world are on high alert. an islamic extremist group is claiming responsibility. >> two state department officials have been killed in libya. we have a team of reporters in the region. for the latest updates coming up on "good morning america." that violence is condemned by both presidential campaigns.

with 55 days to go, mitt romney is under criticism from members of his own party. the latest poll shows president obama opening up a slight lead. here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: mitt romney in nevada on the anniversary of 9/11, in front of the national guard. >> we must keep our promises and regain the trust of all those who have worn the uniform and served our country. >> reporter: his speech comes after criticism romney left afghanistan out of his convention speech. his loudest critics might be within his own party, after those poll numbers showing the president now leading the race. more americans now trust the president on the economy than romney. and on that point, conservative dmen tater laura ingraham jumping in. tweeting first to team romney. time to apply turnaround skills to romney's campaign. and on her radio show -- >> if you can't beat barack obama with this record, then shut down the party. shut it down. start new, with new people. >> reporter: and there's conservative george will, arguing unemployment above 8%,

worse if you count those who have given up. >> if the republican party cannot win in this environment, it has to get out of politics and find another move. >> reporter: even romney surrogate donald trump, tweeting what he heard from rush limbaugh. if obama wins, it is the end of the republican party. many conservative critics now argue romney must start delivering details. for example, on romney's promise of tax cuts for all without raising the deficit, many economists asking, when will romney list which tax deductions he'll get rid of to make up the difference? so many, like the mortgage interest deduction. and as one conservative writer put it today, romney can no longer tell the voters he can handle the economy better. that writer saying, romney has to show it, not tell it. >> our thanks to david muir for that report. and the candidates did take something of a political pause, pulling all their attack ads off the air in recognition of the 9/11 anniversary. at the pentagon yesterday, a massive american flag was unfurled over the side of the building. president obama and the first lady attended the ceremony there.

laying a wreath to honor the victims. and here in new york, those two towers of light. you can see them reaching into the sky from the original footprint of the world trade center. survivors and victims' family members gathered yesterday. chicago's striking teachers head back to the picket lines for a third day with no agreement in sight. the head of their union says both sides are still miles apart. after spending much of the day discussing teacher evaluations, the unions signed off on just 6 of the nearly 50 articles in the contract. some parents are showing support for the teachers by rallying alongside them. a convicted tax cheat is getting $104 million from the irs. bradley birkenfeld told prosecutors how his employer, the swiss bank, ubs, was helping its clients evade u.s. taxes. and his whistle-blower reward is a percentage of the money the irs recovered.

he spent time in a federal prison and is now finishing his sentence with home confinement. las vegas will get a chance to dry out today after getting hammered by a powerful line of thunderstorms and downpours. it swamped entire neighborhoods. left cars stalled in waist-high water. drivers had to be plucked to safety as the rain came down at the rate of two inches per hour. the storm also triggered delays at the airport. and those southwest storms shift a little to the east today, with the heaviest rain and flooding from phoenix to albuquerque. showers and thunderstorms from denver to green bay. scattered storms along the gulf coast, as well as much of florida. >> mostly 80s along the east coast. 90s from chicago to dallas. 70s from minneapolis to seattle. chilly in the mid-50s in denver. and still ahead on "america this morning," it's debut day for apple, with millions of iphone fans waiting in anticipation. then, buyer beware. maybe you've noticed the smaller packages but the same prices for the products you buy. we're going to talk about that. and later in "the pulse,"

welcome back, everyone. today, all signs pointing to apple unveiling the iphone 5. it is expected to be thinner, have a bigger screen and work with faster data networks. the iphone accounts for about 70% of apple's profits. and analysts say apple may sell 10 million iphone 5s by the end of the month. 45 million by the end of the year. anticipation's been so high that

sales of older iphones were down significantly over the summer. >> amazing. the world is hearing from mark zuckerberg for the first time since he took facebook public and watched it quickly plummet. the falling stocks personally cost zuckerberg billions of dollars. but he seemed confident that he could turn things around. >> the performance of the stock has obviously been disappointing. right? and we care about our shareholders. and the commitment that we made is that we're going to execute this mission of making the world more open and connected. and we're going to do the things that we think are going to build value over the long term. >> investors apparently liked what they heard. facebook stock shot up about 3% yesterday, closing above $19. >> key word, long term. wall street is keeping an eye on the federal reserve. fed officials are meeting today and tomorrow. and afterwards, they are likely to announce new efforts to boost the economy. now, just the expectation alone was enough for the dow to gain 69 points yesterday and close at

health. >> promotes a healthy heart. >> omega 3 spofrts a healthy heart. >> reporter: $740 million. that's how much we spend on them a year. fish oil capsules. containing the substance heart doctors swear by, omega 3 fatty acids. look at the bottle. the packaging says the capsules support a healthy heart. may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. but the groundbreaking new study says the proof is in. and fish oil capsules don't deliver on their promise. researchers looked at 20 studies on heart health, almost 70,000 patients altogether. and say that overall, people who took fish oil supplements are no less likely to die from heart disease or stroke, than anybody else. in short, no proven benefits. >> there's a lot of claims made about a lot of diets and supplements that just don't have the evidence behind them. >> reporter: but eating fish itself, that seems to help. people who eat fish twice a week are less likely to have heart disease and less likely to die from it. it's not clear why getting omega 3s in food, not pills, makes a difference. but it looks like it does.

one theory? the body absorbs the omega 3s from eating fish in a different way. if you're spending money on fish oil capsules to protect your heart, it may be better to spend that money towards a nice piece of salmon. dr. richard besser, abc news, new york. >> and dr. besser will have much more later on "gma." and more medical news, now. a new study suggesting pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer killer where the incidence and death rates are expected to rise over the next 20 years. pancreatic cancer is a particularly deadly form of the disease, with the survival rate at about 5%. the cheating scandal at harvard university is reportedly impacting some of the school's sports teams. "sports illustrated" and the school's own newspaper says the co-captains of harvard's basketball team are being implicated in the scandal and both may be forced to leave the school. other athletes are among those

implicated. administrators aren't commenting publicly. we're learning details about the relationship between amanda knox and her former boyfriend. both were freed by an italian court last fall after they had served time for the murder of a roommate. in a new book, raffaele sollecito maintains their innocence but admits their bizarre behavior may have given investigators reason for suspicion. knox is writing her own book about the whole ordeal. a wounded warrior from southern california can now wake up in a brand-new house built especially for him. it's a great story. juan dominguez lost both legs and an arm in afghanistan. his new home was modified to make life a little easier. it has an elevator, toilets that flush themselves. lights and heat controlled by the touch of an ipad. the wounded vet says he's getting a second chance at life. >> the chance to be able to go everywhere inside my house, upstairs, downstairs, every bathroom, every room. it's awesome because it doesn't feel like a prison anymore, like
