traffic to catch a few of the shuttle before it begins its next mission that is to inspire as part of a museum exhibit in southern california that will open october 30th. latest update from nasa, endeavour has just flown over the monterey bay aquarium. another science education location. earlier today it flew over the space and science center in oakland. the exploratorium in san francisco and the discovery museum in sausalito. and of course nasa ames research center in mountain view. >> it hitched a ride on top of a retrofited converted jumbo the pair left air force base, flew to sacramento and hundreds of thousands of people from northern california to southern california turned out to see this moment in history. it ispb!hci-it is going to be me saw -- low passes here.

-- i'm glad i was there. amazing. >> reporter: the fly by was a tribute to the men and women of the nasa ames research center which helped develop shuttle program. among the spectators former astronaut steve robinson of san jose who has flown four shuttle missions, one onboard endeavour. >> fact that so many get to see that space shuttle that have never seen it before makes me proud and happy to share the experience. >> reporter: the crowd started showing up before the sun came up in order to get as close as possible to the fly by. it is a treatment for  who cg his school day. >> this is the first time i've ever seen the space shuttle real life. >> i've been excited about the space shuttle since i was his age. it is nice to be able to come and see it for real. >> reporter: now the shuttle is on its way to los angeles where it will go to l.a.x. and

then will be housed at the california science center. there was restricted air space around here we are told there were no flight delays at sfo because of this. john alston, abc7 news. another advantage point that attracted a crowd the golden gate bridge of course that's where terry mcsweeney joins us live. what a morning for you! >> reporter: it really was. it was a great story to cover for every kind of reason standing here at vista point just over the golden gate bridge on the marin side. watching the space shuttle kind of come out of haze fly over alcatraz and come over and split the uprights, if you will, on the golden gate bridge. take a look at the pictures. people were saying wow. they were cheering. everybody, it was almost as if a sergeant said to his platoon, salute. as the shuttle came over

alcatraz they pulled up their cameras that was their salute and everybody started taking pictures with the ipads, phones, camera phones the whole thing. it was an emotional day for some people out here. i saw a woman sitting in a car wiping her cheeks. i up to her and said can you describe how you are feeling? she said ever since i was a girl i wanted to see endeavour i've been a huge fan of the space shuttle program all along. seeing this today, what you are looking at now, seeing that today, was enough to bring tears to her eyes with her was her daughter about the age she was when she got interested in the space shuttle program. really emotional moment. other people talking about patriotism. gentleman from new york city said he couldn't help but think of 9/11 as the plane got so close to something as famous as the golden gate bridge. a lot of reaction. a lot of emotion from the people out here. if you weren't out here half hour before the shuttle came through, then you weren't

endeavour for a moment much more later today. the iphone frenzy is underway. apple fans right now around the world are lining up to get the new iphone 5. amy hollyfield joins us live in san francisco at the apple store. people are still waiting to get their phone. >> reporter: good morning. there is still a line here. it is not a long one, but they are letting people in, just a couple at a time for crowd control purposes. still a line for apple fans, this never seems to get old. it has become a rite of passage for apple lovers standing in line for the next product. this morning's line went up stockton curled on to o'farrell. most waiting for hours in some cases, days, already have iphones. you already have an iphone? >> i do. >> reporter: why are you in line to get another one? >> i'm just excited. >> reporter: some see this line as a business opportunity. hugo gonzales ordered online

but still got in line wednesday to market his company to this captive audience with >> there's so many cameras wanted to take opportunity on that. >> reporter: charlie is working his spot in line a couple of ways. he's getting paid to be here by someone who hired him through a website where you can bid on small jobs. >> i'm being paid $1,500. i got here 10 a.m. monday morning. >> reporter: he once he figured out he was getting attention at the front of the line the company considered him a billboard and slapped a t-shirt on him. >> they found out i was doing that and now promotional tunes they brought signage. >> reporter: free samples like chocolate milk from nestle becoming common when apple launches a product. majority of the crowd is here because they can't wait for the new iphone. as they emerged from the store holding it up like a trophy

many seemed to quickly forget the hours they spent waiting on the sidewalk. >> yeah, it was worth it. i'll keep it for three years then upgrade to the next 6s or something. >> reporter: he will be back to do this again. they won't tell me how many they have left. if you want to come down and try to get one it is a roll of the dice. they expect a rush at lunch. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. this is the scene at the apple store in palo alto which opened to eager crowds 8 a.m.. many having camped out overnight. the store on university avenue is special to apple fans, minutes from the home of the late steve jobs. first in line was a palo alto drum teacher who first bought apple stock when it was $13. it is now trading at over $700 a share. driven up by enthusiasm over the iphone 5. >> he can buy as many phones as he wants >> other news of the day big

rig went out of control blocked rail tracks in santa rosa this morning. -- in santa clara this morning. it came to rest on the tracks at park avenue that interrupted service on the winchester to mountain view line. the delay lasted an hour and a half buses were used to take passengers to san fernando stations and convention center. no injuries reported. san francisco police investigating identify-involved shooting last night that sparked a riot by dozens of demonstrators. vandals spray painted the word killers" on the front doors of the police station more than a dozen riot police officers stood outside the station until midnight. protesters marched to the 16th and mission bart station making anti-police comments during the march. investigators say a plainclothes officer shot a suspect who pulled a gun after 8 p.m. at 14th street. the unidentified male was wounded and police say he is a suspected gang member.

in pakistan today violent protests left 15 dead and more than 100 wounded across the

country. protesters clashed with police in several cities. even though today was a government declared holiday designed to allow peaceful demonstration. 12 people were killed and more than 82 wounded in karachi. a police officer and a driver for a television network were among those killed. >> in texas researchers launching new war against cancer. the m.d. anderson center is calling its moon shots program unprecedented effort to speed up conversion of scientific discovery into clinical advances the goal to reduce the number of deaths of several ram forms of cancer they were inspired by john kennedy's determination to go to the moon in the 60s. speaking of that and flying meteorologist lisa argen here. a few high clouds, nice and mild in the city, 63 san francisco, 70s by the delta and antioch 69 at the

>> happening right now mitt romney is just releasing his 2011 tax returns. he paid 1.9 million dollars in taxes on 13.7 million dollars of income. that is a 14.1% rate. romney's campaign earlier estimated that romney will pay about 3.2 million in taxes. he is still refusing to release returns from earlier years as the obama campaign is demanding. romney will be raising more cash for his campaign in the bay area this afternoon. he's scheduled to appear at a $50,000 per person continuer in at a private home. has no public events scheduled. he swung through the bay area in july attending fundraisers.

president obama will be returning to the bay area as well for his sixth fundraising event in the past year. tickets for october 8th, concert and rally are already on sale they range from $100 to $7500. president obama's last bay area visit was in july. this morning "good morning america" anchor robin roberts says she feels energized. she was surrounded by family and friends. her older sister was the bone marrow donor. robin was diagnosed with mda, a rare blood disorder she completed eight days of chemotherapy prior to yesterday's transplant. the procedure only took five minutes. >> nobody can believe it. people have in their mind all kinds of images what is going to happen in a transplant it is still a powerful moment inside of that syringe are millions of stem cells that are now circulating around and
