>> in the news this saturday morning, the whom who abandoned her little girl in morgan hill, rather than face the music for shop lefting, is in jail this morning. a bizarre story that seemed headed for a tragic conclusion. and the critical mass demonstration that brought thousands of bicyclists to the streets of san francisco and slowed thousands of drivers. did they all get along? good morning. i'm terry mcsweeney. we have a lead story when it comes to weather. here's meet lisa argen. >> hopefully you won't be getting hot and bothered this weekend because we have a lot of heat headed our way. tomorrow much warmer. we do have fog to talk about from our roof camera not only here in the city and along the coast, but it is all around the bay. almost into concord. clear around the delta. and visibility is reduced in parts of the bay.

so temperatures are school. we have mist, plenty of 50s out there, but by noontime it will be sunny, a few patches of fog left over at our coast. 70 #* 70s and 80s around the bay. a quick warmup and we will see the sea breeze confined justify to the shoreline. numbers in the 60s there, 80s around the bay and 90s inland. it's a spare the air day. the sea breeze is week and we are talking about much, much warmer weather the second half of the weekend and into next week. we will look at the seven-day outlook coming up. terry. >> thanks a lot. this morning the woman accused of leaving her daughter behind of a getting caught shoplifting in morgan hill is in custody. 38-year-old marcie keelin was arrested last night inning a nine day odyssey. officers found her in a motel room with a male companion and her 11-month-old son, ashton. she said she would kill herself if she couldn't be with her baby. she's wanted in connection with a shoplifting incident in safe way. she had her cart full of

groceries which were not paid for to the exit. when she pulled up to load up, she saw store employees were on to her. she took off, leaving her daughter behind. she's been dodging authorities ever since. she's scheduled for an extradition hearing monday in nevada. >> critical mass celebrations continue throughout the weekend in more than 300 cities nationwide as they are pushing for bicyclists rights. a bike ride took place. we have the story on last night's anniversary ride in which an estimated 6,000 bicyclists tied up rush-hour traffic. [horns honking] >> the thrones of cyclists moved about the city in aim less celebration while drivers could do nothing but sit and wait. >> we aren't blocking traffic, >> the light is green behind you and traffic needs to go. >> we are traffic.

>> for drivers, it was utter frustration. at market, we saw one rider reach into a car and tussle with a driver. other people at the scene then pulled the bicyclist away from her. >> you are breaking the law. >> in texas we would shoot your [bleep]. >> san francisco police closely monitored the ride, at one point telling drivers to be patient. >> it happens once a month. >> i wish i would have known that when i bought a ticket that happens to be the 20th anniversary. it's probably worse tonight than others. >> there were moments of politeness. here some riders cleared an intersection to let the cars through. at venice and market, a large crowd road around in circles and then held up their bikes in victory others just took it all in stride. >> it's part of living in the city. >> san francisco police confirm that there have been no arrests. in san francisco, nick smith, abc7 news. a lot of demonstrations took place in the mission district overnight. at 18th and valencia a splinter group of about 200 riders occupied the intersection by riding in circles through traffic light changes. some drivers were very frustrated but they kept their cool and backed away from the intersection.

all in all bicyclists and motorists thought it went off pretty well. >> i thought they were all pretty peaceful and we all worked he together to make it a positive ride. >> some got out of cars and waved and honked in delight. >> i lived here for a year and i was waiting to run into something-like. this i think it's pretty cool. >> he wanted to be in it. >> a lot of people driving in san francisco last night had to show a little patience, and they did. in los angeles right now drivers are being told to stay off the road had. it's being called karma goad done ii. san diego freeway where a ten mile stretch of freeway linking west los angeles and the san fernando valley is shut down. it's one of the world's busiest freeways. demolition crews are tearing down a bridge.

they have until monday morning to clear away the debris and build a new one. the contractor faces huge penalties if the work isn't done in time for monday morning's commute. we will keep an eye on it and let you know how the job is pro grossing. -- pro grossing. breaking news in vallejo. a fire has damaged the law offices of davis. a fire broke out this morning right across from the sonano superior courthouse. firefighters knocked it down quickly and nobody injured by officials say the fire is suspicious and they are calling in arson investigators. after hearing about the fire, the mayor arrived at the scene appearing visibly shaken by what was going on. he offices there with another attorney. it's considered a crime scene and that's all fire officials are saying right now. families in novato are remembering a young student struck by an suv and killed two days ago as she road her bike home from school.

she was 12-year-old and moved with her family from new mexico last month. hundreds of people mourned her loss last night. we have more. >> novato showed its grief and support for the ratliff family friday night at the high school in novato. about 300 came to join in a vigil and a moment of high sense for the 12-year-old. a tearful mom was hugged by friends and family. angela spoke to us off-camera about her daughter. >> in the twelve short years that haley was here, she has changed and touched and impacted more lives than most people do in an entire lifetime. and i miss her so much. >> police say haley was bicycling home from school at about 2:30 thursday afternoon when she was struck by an s.u.v. haley was taken to oakland's children's hospital where she died of the injuries. her death moved the community, especially those with children. >> when something like this happens and you wonder how you

can prevent it. >> it is sad when it hits the community because you think of your children, how it can happen to them. and it's emotional. >> teddy bears, flowers are and candles brought to the vigil, as well as a couple white balloons. they were released in her memory. a memorial a few feet away from where she was struck is filled with toys and flowers for haley and her family. the man driving the s.u.v. has not been charged in the accident. novato police say the cause of the accident is still under investigation and they say that investigation may take as long as three days to three weeks. abc7 news. governor jerry brown has signed in law two bills that affect bay area residents. one regulates the use of red light cameras statewide. this bill specifically prohibits the use of red light cameras solely to raise revenue for local governments. it requires camera locations be based on safety considerations

and nothing else. it also requires adequate signs to notify drivers that the cameras are in use and make it easier for wrongfully ticketed drivers to get that ticket cleared. >> governor brown also signed a bill expanding the ban on openly carrying handguns to include rifles and shotguns with a few exceptions. misdemeanor to display an unloaded firearm of any kind in a public place. however it does not apply to hunters, members of the military, rural californians or anyone transporting guns to shooting ranks or to gun smiths. >> the expanded plastic bag ban is almost here. come monday you will have to pay ten cents for a paper or compostable bag from the city retailers. none of them will be allowed to offer you plastic. the ban goes beyond big box and grocery stores to include smaller mom and pop stores and in july of next year it expands

to include restaurants. it is intended to help san francisco reach it's zero waste goal. >> the owner of the newest casone no filed a claim against the city. the matrix card room says a convoluted permit program pushed back its opening by four months and it's asking for a minimum of ten thousand dollars for what is calling the unpredictable and frequent delays in san jose's licensing process. filing the claim is the first step toward filing a lawsuit. it planned to open last april and didn't open until august. 19 u.s. military veterans filed a lawsuit in federal court saying they were raped in the armed forces and faced retaliation for reporting the climb. two spoke about their ordeal. they told stories of harassment and assault by military superiors. danielle hoffman said she was raped several times starting as a recruit in 2003. >> i felt i had two choices, willing or unwilling. i knew if i stood up for myself

again i would be isolated more and abandoned. >> congresswoman jackie speer joins the plaintiffs. she's sponsoring a bill called the stop act. that would create an impartial office of military and civilian expers to review claims. it ordered the military to review their sexual assault prevention programs. coming up next, a dog owner going after united airlines. what happened when he tried to fly his dog across the country to san francisco. an nfl football might soon return to los angeles. the huge step taken by the city to build a brand new stadium.

>> a miami man is furious after his dog died on a cross yes flight in august. a man and his dog hopped on a united airlines flight 20 san francisco with a stopover in huston. united advertises a program that offers personal handling for pets in air-conditioned vehicles during four hour layovers. in huston he had a two hour layover and he noticed bam bam in his crate on a luggage carrier. >> it's right under the wing. we were right there and had a direct shot and we could see

him. he was so hot and his tongue was like hanging down. >> bam bam died on the flight to sfo. united performed a nacropsy and said he died of a heart attack. the man wants the airline to be clearer about what people should expect when they fly with their pets. >> christopher stevens, the late ambassador to libya, will be honored after today's football game. he graduated from cal in 1982 with a degree in history. the school also announced it has established a memorial fund in stephens's name. he was killed earlier this month on the attack on the consulate in libya. at first it was believed it is a reaction to an anti-muslim film and now they are fining out the attack was a planned terrorist assault. hold on to your football teams. the los angeles city council has approved documents approve building a now do you town

tomorrow. 59 in mountain view right now. 56 in fremont. good morning, santa rosa. 50 for you. 57 in antioch. we are looking at the some poor visibility at our coast. around santa rosa mile and a half. four miles half moon bay and around concord it is still clear as well as up toward the delta. you will notice the visibility much better to the north and east of the city. but we will look for improving conditions by midmorning but we have the mist. and this weekend we are looking at a big warmup. not only today but another ten degrees of warming. tomorrow another couple degrees warming into monday. not much relief on tuesday. it's a spare the air day where air quality definitely takes a hit. the winds will be light. only a sea breeze right at the immediate shoreline. you know, from day-to-day throughout the next four days, our winds are going to go offshore from time to time. but today, for the fall fest in pacifica, plenty of low clouds and fog to start out.

by noontime they will be thenning out and by midday sunshine, low 60s there. across the state the fog pushes back. very comfortable conditions along the shoreline. 94 in chico. 87 in los angeles. pretty warm there but once again it's been weekend of a weekend with the beach hazard along the central coast. a strong rip currents. large shore breaks. be careful from the santa cruz boardwalk to twin lakes and the state beach as well. temperatures today, what a warmup compared to yesterday. 70 in the city. 77 across the bay with mid-90s up towards clear lake. our friends in the santa clara valley, mid-to upper 80s. we are talking mid-60s in monterey. 90 in gilroy and tonight we have the harvest moon. it's the first full moon closest to the equinox. 99.9% full. should be a beautiful evening and we will see the fog pretty much disappear until if you are right at the coast you may see a little bit of that.

>> topping the news. president obama is trying to encourage the recovery of the housing market this morning by making it the subject of his weekly address. he wants republicans to congress to support his plan to help homeowners he hurt by the collapse of the housing market to pass bills to help homeowners refinance at lower rates. >> i sent congress the plan to give everyone a chance to safe about $3,000 a year on their mortgages by refinancing their mortgage rates. republicans in congress work to keep it from even get to go a vote. >> the republican response blames the collapse of the housing market on u.s. corporate tax rates that push jobs overseas. they are calling for a pro growth tax code to help bring those jobs back.

new this morning, today is the day you can turn in unwanted prescription medications with no questions asked. it's a national effort by the drug enforcement administration or dea to help you rid your home of potentially dangerous, expire, unwanted or unused prescription drugs. bay area police agencies are opening their doors this morning from ten to two this afternoon. the service is free and it's anonymous. the program began in 2010 and since then almost 774 tons of prescription drugs have been recovered nationwide. for more information on bay area collection sites we have a link on our website, abc7news.com under see it on tv. a lack of shipments from the federal government is leaving bay area food banks in empty shelves and it's happening just as demand for food is especially high. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has details from the almeda county food bank in oakland. >> the empty shelves say it all these days at the alameda county community food bank. for the first time in a long time the food bank has had to go

without deliveries of crucial items like canned vegetables, fruit, rice, beans and frozen meats. the reason, the u.s. department of agriculture hasn't delivered surplus commodities to oakland in two months. >> we haven't received a shipment from usda attempts -- items since the end of july so we are experiencing a great shortage that our clients are feeling. >> normally they would have about 1 million pounds of usda food on the shelves. now they are down to about half of that. it's the same story at the food bank of contra costa and solano that also relies heavily on the usda delivery. it's not clear if it is diverted or not available due to the drought in the midwest. the usda has yet to give us those answers. but the reality is coming just as the demand for food in those counties remains extremely high. >> more families find themselves

turning to the food bank these days and we're a lifeline to them. so the need in alameda county is growing. we are serving one in six alameda county residents, the majority of which are children. >> to try to offset the shortage, both east bay food banks are appealing to the public, asking for them to organize their own food drives. and make monetary donations. >> we can turn every dollar that is donated into four dollars worth of food that we can distribute. we will come down here and volunteer, help out, lend your voice, call your legislator. there's a lot that can be done to help our neighbors in need. >> it's unclear at this point when these government shipments might resume, if the public wants more information on how they can help this food bank and the other one in contra costa county. that information can be found on our website, abc7news.com. in oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> it's a lot safer this morning for pedestrian in south san jose. a new bridge opened up yesterday providing safer access to a shopping center.

the walkway comes after a toddler died in the very same spot seven years ago. more from abc7 news reporter sergio quintana. >> elijah anyplace the purple ribbon opening this pedestrian bridge to traffic. he was with his little brother on that terrible day when the two-year-old got killed by an amtrak train as he tried to cross the tracks with a sitter. his mother, nicole, was devastated at the time. now she holds back tears as she crosses the bridge named after her son. >> a lot to take in right now. >> this is a bridge that's designed for pedestrians and bicyclists and among the first to cross is this woman. she said she used to pedal her son across the tracks throw games of the week. >> dangerous, right? >> very dangerous. any seven-year-old was let's go around, don't go over the track and i would say, okay. >> she's relieved for this new crossing. and along with the new bridge a shiny new fence has been installed to block people from walking over the train tracks here.

so now that we have the pedestrian brick, we have to have fencing to keep people from walking there. we are trying to funnel people into using the bridge. >> following the accident that killed little alexander, his family decided to leave san jose and now call fresno their home. though the death of the young child proved to be very difficult to handle, alexander's family returned for this emotional dedication. >> he's saving lives. this is awesome. >> as everyone made it all the way across the bridge the emotion of the moment overcame the whole family. this bridge is called zander's crossing. his mother said his spirit will always give safe passage for all who choose to cross here. it took a year to design and construct the bridge but it took more than nine years to get the funding lined up for this $10.5 million project. in san jose, abc7 news. >> still ahead, a rare chance to

granola thins. from nature valley. nature at its most delicious. >> the burmese opposition leader who spent nearly 15 years under house arrest is making her first visit to the bay area. about 9:00 this morning they will take part in a town hall style meeting at the war memorial gymnasium. yesterday she addressed an audience in downtown san francisco. abc7 news reporter leeann melendez told us about this important visit. >> she received a hero's welcome at the san francisco's asia foundation. she's come to symbolize the struggle of the burmese people to be free when she herself was allowed to leave her home only two years ago. >> it is now up to all of us who remain to make sure that the transition comes as peacefully and as quickly as desirable.

>> during her visit to the bay area, she met with political leaders and entrepreneur and expressed their willingness to help support her country. she cautioned true progress in burma must include all people. >> it's not enough to help a country which is emerging from dictatorship into democracy. it has to be helped in such a way that the foundations of the democratic society would be strengthened. this, of course, means empowering the people. >> she spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest. but during her confinement, the world's continued to acknowledge her efforts to bring democracy to burma, also known as miyanmar in 1991 she was award the the nobel peace prize. recently on september 19th she was presented the congressional gold medal, the highest civilian honor in the u.s. under the leadership of the current president, the country is slowly seeing political and social reform.

class, a sailor. a lot going on and the ipad thing makes me think it will be an interesting and younger crowd down at the today. a ton going on. and a great weekend to have a ton going on. >> yes. a high fire danger, though. we are starting a big warming trend today. >> let's hope that doesn't go on. >> well, it is. and it's right into tuesday. we are talking about offshore flow tonight with a northerly wind but that's absent this morning. you can see it from this shot. plenty of fog out there but the marine layer is getting more and more compressed. by this afternoon it will disappear. we are talking northerly flow later on today, bringing sunshine here, even to our coast. but we have the fog fest in pacifica where the fog right on cue this morning before it begins to disappear about 11:00, 12:00. live doppler 7 hd. so as we start out, the marine layer is above 1,000 feet, about

twelve hundred feet and we are looking at plenty of gray across the bay. the spare the air day today still right on cue with light winds and, in fact, through the early part of the week they are going to go offshore. so that will bring low relative humidity. right now it's 54 at half moon bay, 55 redwood city. we are talking about the visibility being reduced all around the bay. the fog has made its way now into concord with delays at sfo over an hour right now. mile and a half visibility for santa rosa. pretty gray from half moon bay and low clouds and fog in san jose. so not only the fog, but we have the mist this morning and we will be looking at a warm to hot weekend with temperatures today warming as much as 10 degrees and significant warming again tomorrow. and that will bring on the excessive heat watch tomorrow afternoon through monday evening. but tuesday doesn't look much cooler either. so we are looking at the best air quality away from the eat bay and the santa clara valley

but really keep that in mind today. we will warm up very quickly. so a real about-face from yesterday. but by tomorrow where we are expecting temperatures to flirt with records, not everywhere, though. look at livermore. getting awfully close into the upper 90s, as well as san jose with tomorrow's forecast ten degrees warmer than today. and about the same story in santa rosa. some of these records will be hard to beat around san francisco and, of course, oakland where it will be much more comfortable. so if you don't like the heat and you have that going for you, but we will be looking at steadily warming temperatures right on through the next three or four days. so today in and around the south bay look for 83 in sunnyvale with 86 campbell and on the peninsula not only do we have the fog here but we have it into redwood city and mountain view. by 10:00 it's gone and numbers will be quickly warming. low 80s there. 70 in the city. plenty events going around downtown today, but it should be comfortable there.

86 for novato with mid-90s up toward clear lake. look for 77 in oakland and 82 castro valley. you head inland, back to what we had on thursday with plenty of 90s down by the monterey bay today. it should be a a nice day,, but getting warm toward gilroy. 90 there. at the coliseum we are looking at low 70s to start out. 77 by 4:00. plenty of sunshine and big time warmup there. we are talking even five degrees more of warming tomorrow. another couple degrees on monday. we have been seen this weather in quite some time. very little cooling on tuesday, and then more significant cooling by the end of the work week. but if you haven't heard yet, we have got a fun little thing going on here, it's 49,000 viewers already have liked us on facebook, and they are all eligible to enter our sweepstakes to win $49,000. so you just have to go to our facebook page and that's at
