captioned by closed captioning services, inc. breaking news from union city. four alarm fire heavily damaged a strip mall. >> amy hollyfield is live at the scene. >> reporter: this was a big one. the roof collapsed looks like the corner of the strip mall is gone. take a look at this video. take a look at what firefighters were up against when they got here many huge fire, they say it had a good head start on them they got the call after 1:00 this morning. they could see fire coming out the front door they realized it was big when they saw it was in the attic this is a strip mall full of small businesses, small business owners, a lot of them heartbroken. firefighters say it looks like 10 units were damaged. firefighters realized when it

was big they needed to make a move, they needed to pull back which was possibly a lifesaving move. >> started backing out, we had the collapse, it was obvious, good recognition by the initial crews that's what we train and it worked out. >> it could have been tragic. >> yeah. >> all the owners were here it is bad. >> reporter: there is an apartment building behind the mall. we are at alvarado and dyer in union city. fine, the building is fine. the people were very scared. they said everyone get out, let's be on the safe side. they've allowed them to go back in. i know it is dark, can you see all of that water? that is not something we usually see.

it you a sense of how aggressively they attacked this fire. how much water they put on it. it is now standing water out here almost looks like a lake. they did save a big chunk of the mall this corner looks like it might be destroyed beyond repair. that is something they are going to wait until day flight to determine. -- wait until daylight to determine. i did ask about lightning this morning. firefighters said, while that was impressive to see and surprised them, they don't think that played a role. again, they are going to wait until the sun comes up. a firefighter suffered a cut on his hand. he's going to be okay. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. lightning, not a factor in

that fire. certainly unusual and interesting for this time of year. >> something we both saw this morning. you see it there lighting the skies above the peninsula for almost an hour last night it continued across the bay overnight. we spotted at least six strikes at the abc7 south bay bureau. >> good morning mike. a line of thunderstorms rolled up the peninsula, up skyline boulevard that's where it was a few hours ago now it is over moss beach, half moon bay towards pescadero. the good news is this is starting to pull away. for your morning commute looking drier than it did earlier. along skyline boulevard the last three hours. this going to continue to rotate northwest. a few more showers may hang around for the morning commute, but they will be mainly in that area along the coast. for the rest of us, we could

>> reporter: the sheriff and his wife were sporting big smiles late last night after learning of their victory and supporters cheered. >> the charges of official misconduct against sheriff ross mirkarimi are not sustained. [ cheering [ >> reporter: the board of supervisors heard testimony and public comments for hours last night. they had to decide whether to upheld the ethics commission ruling that the sheriff committed official misconduct when he bruised his wife's arm in argument. nine votes were needed to oust him only sieve event voted that way. after the sheriff -- only seven voted that way. >> i look forward to demonstrating why the people elected me as sheriff and look forward for me and my family to move in a place where we hopefully, will keep normalcy again. >> as a family we need our normal life back. to put a family through this

is not the right way to deal with domestic violence. >> reporter: mirkarimi's attorney says the sheriff is automatically reinstated. he is entitled to back pay which equals six months of his salary mayor lee was the driving force behind reof moing the sheriff from office. the sheriff says he and the mayor have work to do -- and hopes they can rise above politics. mayor lee issued a statement about the board's decision. lee says: i strongly disagree with the action taken by supervisors. the board's decision returns a convicted domestic batterer to lead the sheriff's office. we have jut learned a stanford professor is the recipient of this year's nobel prize in chemistry. bryan kabilka is sharing the

your forecast in a second. 4:44. if you can help, listen to this, 15-year-old i should say a heartbroken young girl from pleasanton is asking for the return of her stolen dog this is holly the 5-year-old pug was stolen monday morning when thieves broke into the home. cynthia e-mailed us about what happen. police say thieves got jewelry and electronics as well as holly. 8-year-old boy in newark went on a joyride but it was his dad who is in trouble. it happened monday night at this motel 6. the boy grabbed the car keys as his parents slept he got the car in gear then stepped on the gas the result, he rammed the car into the motel, the boy's dad was also wanted on a warrant for theft. he was taken to jail. neither parent was arrested in connection with the crash. follow-up and good news on a story we've been reporting on.

23-year-old woman missing for three days in yosemite park is save. jessica garcia was last seen saturday after an employee meeting. she was supposed to start her job sunday, but never showed up. searchers found her in a very rough terrain in the southern tip of the park. she had to be airlifted out. she suffered a broken hip and thigh bone but is expected to recover. authorities plan to talk with her to determine what happened. the initial response is that they think she got lost. >> it is a vast park that is easy to do in yosemite. nervous community on alert after a fire bug strikes again in san jose. what neighbors are doing to protect themselves. arsonist. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> reporter: >> it was dark you could see embers flying, -- >> reporter: this is cell phone video of the most recent fire in an alley. there have been at least seven other fires here since september 26th. >> it is very stressful in the last few weeks it is happening so often. >> reporter: too often for anyone's comfort who lives on street back of their homes on this alley this is where they park their cars and throw out their trash. this is exactly where an arsonist is striking over and over again. mostly in the early evening. sunday alone, three separate fires were set in three hours. >> such a small consolidated area, we do not want this person to continue in this behavior. >> reporter: the fear is the fire will spread to these homes. >> later this morning

investigators will be out here passing out flyers to those who live and work in this area they want everyone to know there's an arsonist out there investigators say they need the public's help to stop this person. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. sea lion doing fine this morning after a dramatic rescue at pier 39 spotted on the docks yesterday with something tightly wrapped around its next. a team from the mammal center couldn't help until they shot with it a tranquilizer to slow it down. they sneaked up on it and nabbed it in a net the thing on its next was a plastic box strap. >> if those get into the ocean without being open still a ring, they are deadly. these guys are curious and they will look and nose it and get it on like a collar. >> they can choke to death on those straps.

the sea lion will be evaluated for a few days before it is released. driving in this morning we saw lightning. weather window first then doppler. dry on the embarcadero. where it did rain it was healthy this morning. you can see right here that's not one of those cases. as we head deep per into the forecast, the best chance of storms are going to continue to be out near the coast where we are seeing them now with live doppler. it is showing you those storms rotating as you would expect around an area of low pressure topside to the northwest they are pulling from half moon bay and moss beach now. don't expect much of a redevelopment if it does happen it will remain over the coast. by the afternoon better chance of redevelopment around the monterey bay and south bay and

points south of that. if you are stepping out now, temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, napa and santa rosa, everybody else in the 50s until you get to antioch 62. monterey bay and inland mid to upper 50s. scattered showers isolated thunder possible, into the weekend we'll have a warming trend take over. this area of low pressure slowly sinking south since it is over the ocean it is picking up moisture and instability that's why we have showers strongest over the ocean they could rotate back towards us. 7:00 maybe a shower around the monterey bay and points south. into the afternoon another band and with the heating of the day we could see thunder. into tomorrow everything is going to quiet down. as we go to the mountains, by tomorrow evening we could have snow to about 8,000 feet. today upper 60s to low 70s
