the keep is back tonight. giants fever is spreading, not only here in san francisco, but all across the bay area today. you better believe it, lots of local businesses, well, they can't rate to reap some of the profits from fans. giants, they have been warming up this weekend for sunday's game against st. louis here at&t park. team members are happy for the home field advantage and that all-important boost from local fans. and local bars, restaurants like the polo grounds are gearing up for a lot of hungry and thirsty fans. they say they need the business to survive financially. and don't forget that all-important gear, giants hats, t-shirts, they are hot sellers this weekend. everyone in the ballpark neighborhood, in fact, say one thing, bring it on. >> we live for it and that's what we pray for. all of the bars in the neighborhood, that's our bread and butter. that's what we live for. >> i'm here for north carolina, i'm the biggest giants fan in

necessary. the space shuttle endeavour is still making its way slowly to are its new home in los angeles at the california science center. this is a live look at what's going on right now. the shuttle was supposed to arrive last night by 9:00, but right now it is still moving. the latest estimated arrival time at expedition park is about an hour from now. there's no single reason for the delay. it's the accumulation of a lot of small problems along the way. in one case, for example, there was a tree that planners did not think would be not the way but it had to be cut down. large crowd gathered in one spot where they thought they might hit a light post. >> because it is dark, it's hard to distinguish actual objects from shadows. the surface of the vehicle is incredibly vehicle. you can damage a tile just with

your thumbnail. so he slowed the pace of the orbiter down to maybe a half-mile an hour, a mile an hour. >> on september 21st the endeavour made a quicker pass over the bay area riding peggy back on a specially equipped bogey 747. one weekend is on alert this weekend after a series of mail thefts is happening. but neighbors do have one advantage, surveillance video. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> here he's on the property, running up past the car. he has a cigarette in his hand. >> what you are listening to is one of the victims in a series of thefts in this neighborhood. he agreed not to use the victim's game but he agreed to walk us step by step through images about of the thief caught

on his surveillance system. >> looking for witnesses, quickly grabs the mail, turns around. goes down the hill. he obviously has the mail in his possession. >> police say this suspect may be responsible for several thefts in the neighborhood. >> over the course about the past week we've had approximately four incidents of mail theft in el~cerrito. it occurred in the area of arlington boulevard and cutting boulevard. >> this one said he made off with a cashier's check from his mailbox. another one said someone stole a package right off her front steps. this is a neighborhood neighbors tell us has been safe and they try to keep an eye on each other's property. >> we find out more about it now since we have a neighborhood watch where e-mails are exchanged between neighbors >> one of the biggest concerns by investigators when someone rifles through someone else's mailbox is identity theft. >> there may be account information depending on bank statements. >> thanks to this surveillance

video, police have excellent images of they're suspect and the vehicle he drove off in. they believe it's a silver or white cobalt. >> there's four separate cases of mail theft in this neighborhood the last week but police say there may be other victims. they are hoping residents will monitor their accounts and if for some reason they believe they are an additional victim, they should contact police. abc7 news. in hayward a 66 your old pedestrian has died after being struck by a motorist on jackson street last night. the 26-year-old motorcyclist was also injured but his injuries are not life-threatening, both men of hayward residents. jackson street was shut down for about an hour and a half in both directions. a house in clayton suffered $200,000 in damage from a fire that began in the garage.

firefighters arrived a little after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. we have cell phone video that shows how the fire began. a porsche inside the garage caught fire. owner parked it a few minutes before. everyone got out safely. in west san jose place say a woman accused of setting at least 11 small fires in the past few weeks is under arrest. this is a cell phone video of one of the fires. the arson investigators say they were staking out the area yesterday evening when they caught the 56-year-old in the act of intentionally setting a large trash can on fire >> a man who helped search for a missing hollister woman is now accused of killing her. david kept police in hollister at bay when they went to talk to him friday night about the missing mother. he surrendered around 3:00 yesterday morning and police found a woman's body inside his home.

investigators believe it's 25-year-old heather carroll who disappeared last wednesday. police say he told investigators the woman died aft dugat into an argument were he took part in one of the many community searches for carroll. a public funeral service is now planned for a woman killed inside her home in hercules in contra costa county. retired teacher, susie, was beloved by many of her students. her family tells us the service will be held this friday, october 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at st. patrick's church in row rodeo. the two suspects are under arrest for a month long crime spree, which includes shooting a los angeles county deputy. straight ahead, san francisco's bid to sway the nfl in letting the city host the super bowl in the not-too-distant future you are. also new details about friday

recalled. we are learning more about what happened on the party boat that ran aground and began sinking friday night in san francisco bay. twenty-two people had to be rescued after the accident near alcatraz. abc news reporter nick smith caught up with the owner of the boat. >> reporter: take a look at this video just obtained by abc7 news. these hair-raising moments captured at 22 people had to be rescued from a dining boat in the san francisco bay. they were enjoying a bachelor party when their boat hit rocks near alcatraz island and immediately started taking on water and sinking. >> in my opinion the crew was in tip top shape. >> melissa and her family started the business, wine tasting on the bay, in march. >> we were ready to just go, go, go, and a freak accident out on the bay. >> an accident that left two large holes torn into the boat's hull, making it impossible to

sail. she had bookings guaranteed through november, now everything is on hold. >> i made a lot of calls this morning and told some of my customers the disappointing news. >> i've been running the boat since 1990. >> the captain towed the body in for repair. he said the accident could have been avoided. >> it hit the rock. the buoy marks the rock and it was a navigational error. >> the captain has almost 20 years of nautical experience under her belt. she immediately ruled out drugs and alcohol. >> the crews tested within two hours on the alcohol test and we do drug testing. >> an official investigation is underway, but boating accidents in the bay happen all the time. >> they happen to the most seasoned maritime veterans and they happen to people just going out for the day in a kayak. >> the neptune will sail again. it will take six or eight weeks to repair, making it ready for the thanksgiving holiday.

abc7 news. in berkeley neighborhood kids dressed with swim suits but nowhere to swim are campaigning to restore their local pool. right now willard pool on telegraph avenue looks more ike a garden. it's filled with dirt instead of water. the city closed it a couple of years ago. yesterday organizers held a mock swimathon to support the measures. if passed, funding from the tax and bond measures would rebuild and reopen willard pool, among others. >> yeah, we will come swim here because the kids that come through there, they hang with their friends in the summer, and it's just sad to see that the pool is filled with dirt. >> opponents of measures o. and n. argue the city should not undertake any major projects until it has cash to cover all unfunded liabilities. new this morning, san francisco is making a bid to be the host city for the super bowl. the super bowl in 2016 or 2017,

each though the 49ers are moving to santa clara. today san francisco chronicle reports mayor ed lee has been quietly working, even though it would be played in the south bay. the paper said san francisco would host a myriad of events leading up to thing about game. 49ers ceo confirmed friday san francisco is the team's home. he said if the niners win a super bowl, the parade would be on market street. i on the other hand what they think about that in santa clara. >> yeah, kind of strange. we are looking at a lot of mist and dreads he will this morning. a dense fog at the coast. pretty gray out in and visibility being redutiesed for sure. you can't see much from the hay definition emeryville camera. the fog is all around the bay. i'll tell you when, if it's going to clear and if we will warm up any this week. that's all come up. >> thank you, lisa.

we also have the low sun angle. whether or not we are going to clear everywhere, that's what we are going to discuss right now. roof camera, you see it is pretty gray out there. plenty of events going on throughout the afternoon to. it should be nice and warm away from the coast. but at our coast we are looking at the fog, hard-pressed to totally clear. the marine layer at about 1,000 feet deep. we will look for plenty of gray as you head out. but as a result, temperatures are pretty mild. we've got some low 60s and we are also looking at compromise visibility. only about two mile visibility in oakland. you see a half-mile up in santa rosa and just down to a mile at our coast, novato, expect these conditions to get a little bit worse before they get better. here we go through the 10:00 hour and you notice the fog pulls back. it is still over much of the bay. it is going to take through the early afternoon. we will clear, but look at half moon bay, pacifica, parts of the

san mateo coast. still pretty gray. we will get into a little bit of sunshine. we will call it partly cloudy along the shoreline today. look at the numbers. pretty mild. 51 in the city, 58 this oakland with 59 in mountain view. 54 santa rosa. we were 45 yesterday morning with the breaks in the overcast and we are looking, as a result of the low clouds and fog, anywhere from two to 11 degrees of warming. later on today, depending how quickly we clear, a lot of that will be translated into warmer temperatures this afternoon, especially in our east bay valleys where we should top out in the lower 80s again today. but we do still have a couple of systems to the north so fog and drizzle this morning. mostly sunny today, a few high clouds. the sub born clouds at the shoreline but it will be on the warm side. and looks like by midweek we will get into an offshore flow. between now and wednesday, a couple things going on. we have some weak systems to our north, and once again throughout the afternoon. today nice and mild with numbers around the livermore valley

topping out around 60s and 70s around the bay. this puts it into perspective. we have high pressure building in. look to the north. we have the first system that's going to graze northern california tonight. that will bring us a few high clouds around sonoma county. and another system on tuesday. we will stay dry. you will be pleasant here but once we get behind these systems, that's when the big warmup comes midweek. 79 in campbell today. low 80s in saratoga, 76 in sunnyvale, and along the coast you will notice the fog. mid-60s in pacifica and the fog close to the coast. sunshine downtown. near 70. 77 in sonoma and sausalito a little not-so-spooky halloween festival going on. over the hills, take a look. we are warming up in the low 80s for antioch. 830 by the delta. 79 by pleasanton, and by the monterey bay it's pretty gray now but then 67 there.

championship game rematch against the new york giants at candlestick park. then, as you know, at 5:15 the san francisco giants play the st. louis cardinals at&t park in game one of the national league championship series. yesterday stanford was on national tv against seventh-ranked notre dame. here's mike shumann with highlights of the controversial ending in this morning's sports. good morning. stanford look for their fourth straight win over notre dame yesterday in south bend. >> it was raining, a defensive battle and it came down to overtime. the second road game for josh nunes. the only stanford cut down was the defense, and golson sacked by gardner in the end zone. first time irish trailed this season the first touchdown, tied at 10.

>> welcome back, everyone. in the race for the white house, president barack obama's campaign said it just surpassed 4 million donors. that's a record for a presidential campaign. mitt romney's campaign has not released its latest numbers. the next presidential debate now just two days away. abcs chuck severson reports on what the candidates are doing ahead of tuesday's clash. p.m. now as the candidates prepare for this week's debate, does either party have the edge? coming up at 8:00, this week looks at where things stand after the vice presidential debate. the debate moderator lad cats joins george to break it all down. don't miss this week with george stephanopoulos this morning at 8:00 here on abc7. californians like online voting registration but that might not be good news for republicans. more than 400,000 californians have registered to vote online in the first three weeks since the new law went into effect and more than 70% of them are registering democrat. new this morning, cal osha records show workers at the chevron refinery in richmond complain the company was ignoring corrosion problems after a small fire broke out last year. the san francisco chronicle reports inspectors learned about corrosion concerns from two

workers after that fire, october, 2011, was quickly extinguished during a scheduled maintenance shut down. they said corrosion was attacking the refinery and the workers were concerned for the safety of fellow workers. chevron maintains appropriate actions were taken to protect worker safety. unchecked corrosion is expected in causing the major fire in august that sent thousands of people to area hospitals. sunnyvale amd is cutting over 2100 jobs. advance microdevices say computers who rely on their process source around selling as much as they used to. they cut 10% of their workforce last year. this time it's expected to be 20%, mostly in engineering and sales. a california father is issuing an extreme warning to speeding drivers. philip has put up this sign in front of his home in bakersfield. it reads, warning, you hit my

kid, you will be shot. he said many neighbors support the sign and it's working. he said drivers are following the 25-mile-per-hour speed limit. >> i'm not here to hurt anybody. that's not my intentions. it's just everyone slow down and we are good. >> it's a little much. a little shocking. but i understand their frustration. i mean, aside from doing that, the only alternative is possibly speed bumps and i don't think that would be accepted very well in the neighborhood. >> police say tingley is not breaking any laws with his sign. investigators in los angeles are trying to figure out what caused a patrol car to crash. the car went airborne crashing through a fence and landing on top of another car in somebody's driveway. three officers were responding to a call friday when the accident happened. officers were taken to the hospital, all of them expected to be okay. tv host and actor gary

collins has died. the 74-year-old passed away yesterday of natural causes at a biloxi, mississippi hospital. during the '80s he hosted the miss america pageant and the talk so "our magazine." he also appeared in numerous movies and tv shows back in the '70s, including the love boat, fantasy island and the sixth sense. boaters on lake tahoe are being asked to have patients as they may experience delays over the next six weeks while divers rid the lake of an invasive pest. they are waging a war on asian clams. since they are not nature i have, divers will be treating about five acres of the lake bottom starting tuesday. the clams live on a shallow gravel sandbar about 15 feet below the surface at the mouth of emerald bay.

organize called beyond differences. her daughter had a condition and it affected the way her classmates treated her. i said it's like occupy middle school. go back and do the most positive thing you can think of doing, change the culture. >> the known eats alone initiative has several team leaders monitoring the lunch hour. they are the ones in the back t-shirts. >> to make sure all the kids are involved and no one is eating alone or feeling socially isolated. >> excluding someone is a type of bullying, and studies have showed this type of isolation has a significant impact on students way beyond the lunchtime. >> but when students engage with others, educators say it changes how they interact in class. >> we see a decrease in behaver problems. we see them more engaged. we see them sharing, we see their inner social skills improving. >> the goal is to have all middle and high schools in marin county on board by the end of the school year.

in san rafael, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> parents and school kids grabbed paint brushes and pitched in yesterday in san francisco's mission district. they are working on restoring a mural that was accidentally painted over back in june at the buena vista school. they were unaware of the mural was just paint bad agroup of students. they say it will take a few weekend to bring the mural back to life. a mixture of men and meat may have led to a world record in el ceritto. the group called burning loaf attempted to enter the guinness record book yesterday by making the world's largest meatloaf. it had to be 220 pounds of meat, eggs and onion goodness. it started out at 262 pounds and cooked down to about 230. burning loaf will send documentation in to guinness and hopefully be awarded a world

from the water. the fog expanding in coverage this morning with mild visibility in novato as well as the coast, down to a half-mile santa rosa. three miles in napa. and it's pretty good up into the east bay and that's because the deck is higher. here's the way it is going to play out throughout the rest of the morning. by 10:00 we are sunny in the east bay valleys, but notice we still have the fog from hayward and oakland, down through just about castro valley and then by the afternoon we get sunshine throughout much. marin, and the city. except it's going to hang pretty tight here from pacifica, half moon bay. so although the temperatures will be on the mild side, we are starting out pretty mild. we will have patches of fog, several patches at the coast. half moon bay 355. 55 fremont with 57 in napa and 51 in san jose. the mist and drizzle this morning, more sunshine. a few high clouds in sonoma and napa. otherwise a nice afternoon with warmer weather come our way behind these two systems.

the first system overnight monday, keeping the rain to the north. and then the second system, same thing that. keeps our temperatures fairly stable with the 60s, 70s, some 60s. once we get behind that system, that's when the wind shifts and we get an off flow shore. we will be pretty warm around here wednesday and thursday. 66 in the sierra nevada. temperatures warmer through the sacramento valley. 83 there and back home looking at mid-to upper 70s in the south bay. so about 76 or so san jose. low 70s san mateo. san francisco, if you are closer to the coast, 60s there. downtown, upper 60s to near 70 and in the north bay look for 77 sonoma. mild numbers here. warming through the low 70s for oakland and berkeley today and out over the hills looking for a pretty nice afternoon. but notice the temperatures up as much as four or five degrees from yesterday's readings. and down around the monterey bay. 76 in watsonville. of course, the giants game this afternoon will feature some sunshine and mild conditions and
