19 yard line. they need to get to, what do you think, kelly, about the 35 of texas tech to have a shot at tying the game? >> kelly: the wind has died down, even though it will be at the kicker's back so i think that's about right. he's hit some that would have been good from 65. i wouldn't count on that right now unless you absolutely have to, but in the meantime you have a redshirt quarterback that is playing in his third start that is dinged up from the first half, so he's not real mobile, but he's thrown the ball pretty decently in the second half. >> dave: and hit a big play from 60 yards to ladarious brown to make a big play. throw, wide open! and he has speed. down to the texas tech 45. clearly a blown coverage that time. jarvis phillips saving the touchdown. 36 yards. the clock will begin as soon as the ball is marked ready for

play. putting on pressure to go to the sideline. at the 39 yard line. that's cam white. remember, our estimation is that the freshman kick er, and you cn see what he's done already, he's awfully good, a first down will put him in field goal range. >> kelly: i'm not so sure he's not in range now. obviously the closer they get now the more likely it is for him to knock it through with this kind of pressure. >> dave: he's been imprefer vows to that today. they got to get him a little closer. bush putting on the pressure from the outside and that's going to be a first down. ball down at the 29 yard line. gary patterson screaming spike the football. 50 seconds remaining. brown made that catch. and there's the spike stopping
4:02 pm
it with 47 seconds remaining. it's second down and ten. >> kelly: how well has the red shirt freshman quarterback executed in this situation? it's been unbelievably good. >> dave: now, here's the other thing. how do you call plays on tcu? this is a 46-yard field goal. >> kelly: that's a great point. you can always kill it. if you run it and then you don't get much, you can always get up there and kill it because downs necessarily aren't that big of a deal for the next two anyway. >> dave: he'll go to the middle of the field. they will try the middle, and they get the first down and that will stop the clock while the ball is marked. >> kelly: i think texas tech is just giving this receiving corps too much room as you look for boykins again and again. >> dave: the catch by tucker and the resulting run got the first down. now it's second down and ten. the clock stopped. 38 seconds. how about taking a shot at the
4:03 pm
end zone? >> kelly: i don't know that you want to do it with boykin, the r redshirt freshman. i don't know that you can narrow it down enough to be comfortable with that decision. if you have a veteran quarterback you can tell him at the very least we kick a field goal and tie this thing up. if it's there, great. i don't know that you say that to a redshirt. >> dave: number four defense in the country coming into the game. texas tech is on their heels but they still have the edge and he's sacked at the 25 yard line. it's now third down. the clock continues to roll. there it dartwan bush. he's got to spike it here and set up fourth down and he does. now it's fourth down, and you're going to have to send out the kicker, and there he goes. now the kick has become 42 yards. in his range, no question. >> kelly: that's one of the things that you tell the young quarterback, we don't throw it into coverage, and we don't take a sack and can you see we couldn't hold up his end of the
4:04 pm
bargain in that second one. he took the sack. >> dave: neither team has a time-out. there you see this one from 42. we're all tied up. and that would have been good from 52. he crushed that one, too. the wind died down. but he absolutely hit the middle out of that ball. and this was absolutely right down broadway and was gone for another 10 or 15. it's one thing to kick these out in practice when they kind of quarantine the kickers off by themselves. it's a far other matter to do that when you're in front of all of these people in this big evening here for horned frog football. >> dave: nine plays, 56 yards in

62 seconds, and the redshirt freshman has brought them from ten points back with about 4:00 to go hitting a 60-yard bomb and then calmly taking them down the field doing all the right things except for the sack, and -- and we are likely going to overtime. >> kelly: and what's amazing about that to me is he's limping, so he doesn't even have his best weapon which if i can get outside the pocket and make something happen. he's done it inside the pocket really well. >> dave: and yet another touchback, and i'm going to take a guess that we're going to see a knee here. >> kelly: it will be interesting. >> dave: and overtime. you don't have any time-outs. >> kelly: don't have any time-outs. i do have a veteran quarterback that obviously i want in the game instead of wildcat, by the way. >> dave: hint, hint, hint, hint. >> kelly: i think you're right. without a time-out 18 seconds is not a lot of time. >> dave: well, there you can see

behind him is another red raider. and that is quickly a defensive position. >> kelly: that guy signals overtime. >> dave: the windup. there's so much at stake for these teams. a very important regular season game in the big 12 and it's going to go to free football. both these teams 2-1 in the big 12. you know what texas tech did last week, shook up the game. tcu trying to shake up a brand new conference. it seems like they are in a conference every other year. they are in one where they are very comfortable and very happy. they might be 3-1, or will it be the red raiders? o.t. is next. ♪ ♪

out, just sails wide and it's a little short. right now let's take you back to overtime, tcu and texas tech. >> here we are overtime about to begin. texas tech had a 36-26 lead with just a couple minutes to go. about three in the third quarter and tcu comes back. i guess more like four, and now we're looking at overtime for gary patterson's horned frogs and tommy tuberville's raiders. let's review the rules to see who gets the football first. you have the coin toss and each team gets a possession from the 25 yard line until we decide a winner. no game clock but the play clock is in effect and after the first two overtimes you've got to go for two. here's the referee. interesting that michael brewer,

the redshirt freshman quarterback is out there for texas tech. josh boyce for tcu. >> nothing carries over. at the beginning of the third overtime period you must go for two. what do you want? >> what would you do here. tails is the call. >> the call is tails, and it is tails. do you want offense, defense. >> defense. >> he wants defense. which end of the field do you want to play? >> you'll go that way. you're on defense. >> all right. let's review here exactly how we got this position. we told you it was 36-26 texas tech after a big run and here's the comeback. >> and the big play down the field by brown going over the top of neboh, and that's been there before. the first time they have been able to hit it tonight and then the young quarterback just simply got on fire, down the open guy and threw it on time, and then overthrown. just hit it long.

we've had a blast here in fort worth because overtime proper. i like my defense to be out there first. >> dave: why is that. >> kelly: i think you know offensively exactly what you need and it dictates your play-calling. if i only need a field goal then it determines how i call my plays when my offense is out there. >> dave: there you see the overtime record. 5-4 for texas tech. tcu is 5 of 6. boykin, 307, two touchdowns, 2 interceptions. >> dave: i thought boyce pointed to our left. >> kelly: i think you're right. we can have replays of the coin flip. >> referee: correct, we will play at this end of the field. >> dave: gary says no, i want to play headed towards my office.

tails has been called. it is tails. do you want offense or defense. he wants defense. which end of the field do you want to play? all right. we'll go that way. >> kelly: boyce seemed to point to the other end of the field, but gary patterson wants to go -- eventually texas tech's offense to go into this mass of purple. there's much more red at the other end. >> dave: including the texas tech band. >> kelly: boyce clearly pointed the other direction, however. >> dave: yes, he did. overtime under way, and they go on the ground. and he gets inside the 15 to the 11 yard line. a 14-yard gain to start. eugene nbc yes on the stop. >> kelly: if i was texas tech defensively, i would make boykin prove that he's a ball carrier in this situation.
4:14 pm
the quarterback zone read means nothing unless my quarterback is a viable option to run. i don't think number two is right now. >> dave: he's been beat up all day today. boykin has been limping around at times starting in the first quarter. that was hours ago. into the end zone right here and it's overthrown. second and ten. >> kelly: you're telling the young quarterback the same thing as you were at the end of regulation is we have a field goal at worse, so if we throw the football you make a great decision. if it's there, drive it in there and make a play. if it's not throw it up to your head coach's office upstairs and we live to kick a field goal. >> dave: and they certainly have the ability with ovberkrom bein 5 for 5 into the overtime. and back to the ground.
4:15 pm
inside the ten goes tucker, and now they are at about the seven yard line. it will be third, we'll call it, and about six. >> kelly: you can see boykin as he comes out for further instructions, and he just simply has a bad leg. i don't think he's a viable option on the edge for a runner. see what kind of a decision he makes here in the passing game. >> dave: got ten seconds to get the play off. >> kelly: skye dawson has been the go-to guy from that slot. see if we find him on that play. touchdo touchdown.

>> dave: well, you said you'd like to go second, now texas tech knows what they have to do. >> kelly: you're exactly right. skye dawson is with a the decoy on that play going outside, and he ended up blocking the cover guy for boyce. very well-executed. >> dave: now it's very civile for texas tech. seven or you go home a loser. >> kelly: boyce is going to come inside on the screen. can you see number 11 skye dawson. acts as if he's going outside to run a wrap and what he's going outside to do is wrap the cover block of boyce. very well disguised and executed by boyce and sky dawson. >> dave: i'm going to go out on a limb here and say we're not going to seat wildcat. >> kelly: if we see the wildcat on any play in overtime you might have to prevent me from jumping outside of this booth. keep your trigger-puller on the field. >> dave: and he is. seth doege, the senior.

4:18 pm
guys start to wear out a little bit, but right now play-calling-wise, if i have a senior quarterback as doege is, i'd let him win the game. let him throw the ball into the end zone. >> dave: doege under a little pressure. gets rid of it. a side-arm sling. a short gain. it was caught by sadale foster. i don't know how doege got rid of this. >> kelly: the pressure that tcu has been lacking right there. you're right. doege gets it out and it was a great catch by a running back. typically quarterbacks are taught you have to have the ball on them or they are not catching it. great catch by foster right there. >> dave: they need nine. now stephens is back in the game, number 24 at the tail. three receivers to the left. looking to the right and moore is open in the end zone and he can't see him and goes instead.

4:23 pm
that play. what a call. >> dave: that p.a.t. is going to be critical again. got it. now tcu must get the seven. >> kelly: this is why you keep doege on the field as quarterback right here. the double reverse. he's going to end up with the ball. the fly sweep, the pitch, and then you can see grant going to the opposite corner. very well disguised, and -- and you get hit as a quarterback whether you're split out wide or not. you have the football. you're fair game. >> dave: kenny cain came in. i'm surprised they didn't call that helmet to helmet but it doesn't matter now. you can see he didn't quite get him. got him in the chest, but still, now tcu has to come back, you're asking one more time, for your redshirt freshman in his third start to bring you back. >> kelly: yeah. he's looked very composed, but obviously this is all new for him. every experience he has for the next several games is going to
4:24 pm

4:25 pm
between the tackles, actually in the tackle box, and now they are getting to the perimeter, not with their running quarterback, but with their running backs in that same scheme. >> dave: first and goal from the nine. and you can see once again 16 davis in there. he had some help that time with will smith as well who played a good game at the middle linebacker position. i think there's safeties who want to run support that you have to target, even deep in the red zone. those guys can be influenced with play action passes and get somewhat in behind them at the back of the end zone. >> dave: second and goal at the seven yard line. a second overtime. all touchdowns so far. and tcu needs to do it again.
4:26 pm
and they swing it out. he's got room. boy, they cleared out that right side for him. that -- that looked easy, and now the p.a.t. is all important. >> kelly: that's the beauty of getting man-to-man coverage. the receivers run everybody off and nobody was there to take the running back. >> dave: the helmet goes on over the bandage for seth doege, but first this. and good solid, perfect. >> kelly: tcu knows they are getting man-to-man defense out of tech here. typically the running back would stand and protect. release him and see if anyone has him in coverage, and the answer is not quite soon enough. very well executed by tcu. >> dave: as long as we keep
4:27 pm
walking back to the other ends. i'm sure the officials aren't happy. here on in, by the way, no more kicked extra points. you must go for two if you score the touchdown. you can try the field goal if you have to. there's the last -- thank you, kelly, for checking that off. we've already reached that point. >> kelly: and we've already seen texas tech's willingness to go for two so they obviously have some plays in reserve, and every time does. if we're in this situation, what's our best call when we need a two-point conversion? >> tcu has elected to play at this end of the field. >> dave: okay. they can do that. neither team has ever gone this far in their histories in overtime, three overtimes. >> kelly: when you get to this point, where you're playing so much ball, you talk about attrition. both mentally and physically. can the guys hold off, and can they carry out their assignments the way they were in the first
4:28 pm
four quarters? i think coach patterson might get hydrated himself. >> dave: he's going to have to. all right. his team has the ball. one more time with boykin. tuckner motion. now he pulls up. back to tucker they go, and he is smothered for no gain. now, we've had great play on first downs this this overtime except that one right there. that's the first time this a first down play on the first play of the overtime period didn't work. jackson richards on the stop. >> kelly: well, that's a great point, because when you aren't successful on first down in this situation, all of the pressure transfers to a young redshirt freshman quarterback trying to get it done in a big, big moment. >> dave: you do have a great kicker when has made five field goals, but you really want to settle an overtime game with a field goal. good job there.
4:29 pm
that's a gain of about three. the catch made by josh boyce. now you've got third down and they are going to give him three yards. third and six. >> kelly: back to how do we teach the redshirt quarterback in the moment who is hobbled himself, and it's about decision-making down here? at worst, we kick a field goal. if it's there, make a play, if it's not, put it on the fellow freshman kicker. >> dave: different formation, kelly. empty backfield and two receivers to the short side of the field and three to the left of the qb. guns it. jumped by cody davis who almost intercepted it, and here he comes, jaden oberkrom. >> kelly: the out receiver running the out route right there, and the throw is just simply late. that was tucker from the slot position. it was the right guy. it just needed to come out about a second and a half earlier.
4:30 pm
>> dave: oberkrom hasn't missed a kick today. from 38. this guy's is as cool as the cryogenics sauna they have here which stands as a modern hot tub or cold tub, i should say. he is just perfect. he is unshakeable. six field goals today for oberkrom. a while back, when we started this game, we mention ed the winner of the game is going to be 3-1 in the big 12. there they are right below kansas state. they are a little busy, too, by the way. the loser is going to drop to 2-2 in the conference and most likely realistically you're not going to win the conference with two losses this year in the big 12. additionally, both teams have some tough games left. they might be fighting for bowl eligibility. there's a lot at stake for a mid to late october game. now, texas tech.
4:31 pm
a touchdown will win it. they go underneath, and it's broken up. moore sun able to hang on. jason verrett knocked it loose. >> kelly: jon koontz, number 97, the defensive end, actually dropped back into coverage in kind of a zone blitz and created more traffic inside for that crossing route. >> dave: will it come down to the foot of ryan bustin? 8 out of 11 in field goal attempts this year. moore. he is a physical receiver. his hands seem like they are always on the defender, makes that catch inside the ten to the eight. >> kelly: and the back shoulder said that is so difficult to defend. jason verrett number 2 has great man-to-man coverage all the way outside and throw behind on that back number and moore is a physical guy that can just basically box out and get the
