mete lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. it's definitely a cooler start. temperatures have dropped into the lower 40s, not only in the north bay but mid-40s elsewhere around the bay. grab the jacket. we have partly cloudy skies. high and mid-level clouds will continue to advance ahead of a cold front. temperatures today cooler. numbers ranging from the lower 60s at our coast to just about 70 but we will have the increasing clouds throughout the day and the cold front, it is going to hold off until the overnight hours. we have the giants game that will feature more clouds. breezy winds pick up and we are talking about the first significant rain of the season headed our way. i'll have the details of what to expect for that and the week ahead coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. you know the giants are back home this morning, preparing for another do-or-die situation. tonight they are hosting the cardinal in game six of the national league championship series. abc7 news reporter kera clapper is live at&t park where giants

fans are getting excited about maybe the possibility of another world series. >> that's exactly right. that excitement will only continue to build as the day progresses today until this afternoon's game. let's take you to the scene yesterday right across the street from the ballpark at pedro's can tina. fans are already fired up. when the giants returned to san francisco yesterday morning, manager bruce bochy told abc7 news there would be very little time for his players to rest up. but that they would get a light workout in in preparation for today. knbr radio host are, marty, said the giants will have to play perfect baseball to take the playoffs to game 7. >> the ultimate game. if the they can get it to a game 7 on monday night, you will see something you haven't seen here in a long, long time. >> there's no other sports

reignite at a historic church in berkeley. the fire broke out after 10:15 last night. it's on 9th street and hers the avenue. the church dates all the way back to 1878. the flames spread quickly throughout the building. firefighters raced to keep the fire from spreading. >> our focus was to keep it out of the belltower because once that gets started, it creates a collapse problem. >> i mean, i think maybe the face of the church looks okay, but when it started, when we looked outside the back of the church was completely in flames. >> nobody was hurt but six church interns who live in an adjoining building had to spend the night elsewhere. they should be able to go back home today. investigators continue to look at what started that the fire. about 15 north beach residents evacuated from their homes last

night are safely back home this morning. they were forced out yesterday morning when the police spoken today a man's possible suicide. there were strong smells at the scene. the red cross was called in to assist evacuees until they got the all-clear to re-enter the building. >> bash drivers will face another day of detours while the san mateo bridge is closed for a construction project. here's a live look at the toll plaza. that's where there's been bottlenecks this weekend but at this however of the day traffic is light. traffic crawled along the approaches in the bay bridge last night. the scene resembles what weekday commuters encounter. one driver took it all in stride. >> it was pretty brutal.

we made a wrong turn and it was the best thinning ever because we were able to by pass a lot of it. but still, once we got on it was like ugh! >> caltrans else us the work on the bridge is on track and it should reopen at 5:00 tomorrow morning. it includes replacing a seismic joint at the western end of the bridge and replace 12 concrete slabs that cover 60 feet of roadway. if you need help navigating afternoon that closer, you can download our waze traffic app at abc7news.com/waze. new this morning, a magnitude 5.3 earth quake struck along the san andreas fault by king city. it happened just before midnight. no reports of damage, no reports of injuries, but the quake was felt from the central coast to the nevada boarder and as far north as san jose.

at least four aftershocks have occurred this morning. largest magnitude 3.7 at around 12 do 37 this morning. an alert by the principal of piedmont high school has raised concerns among parents. in a letter sent last week the principal said his staff found a so-called fantasy slut league among students. our reporter has the details. >> on a saturday afternoon women's soccer event we talk to parents about the letter sent out by the principal, rick. in the letter he describes a fantasy slut league in which the female students, unbeknownst to most of them, are drafted as part of the league. males earn points by documenting ebb gauge meant in sexual activities with female students. >> according to the letter, staff learned about it at a talk about date rape prevention. an investigation was launched on campus and they learned it has

been going on five or six years. the presence pal writes participation often involved pressure, participation by older students that included alcohol to impair judgment and control and social demands to remain popular. i talked to the principal by phone about the letter. >> we want to make sure that parents were aware of things that are going on in their kids' lives. >> through the course of the day i talk to about a dozen parents with children at piedmont high school. they all told in they are surprised by the letter by the principal describing the fantasy slut league but none wanted to talk on camera. they say piedmont is a small town and this is a very sensitive subject. there is one parent who agreed to talk with me. >> i'm glad there's a strong administration and he's willing to take on these kind of issues. as a mother of four girls, i couldn't be happier. >> piedmont school administrators say they issued the letter in an effort to be proactive. >> the main thing is i don't want to blow it out of proportion. i don't want to make it something that is some big, horrible event that we found out about. >> they are planning a series of

campus events about lessons of preventing this in the future. abc7 news. >> a substitute teach in your fairfield has been arrested tore roughing up in 7-year-old students. fairfield police say the 51-year-old joe grabbed the four children by the neck or the throat for misbehaving. no one was hurt. it happened wednesday at the elementary school. people there say there had to be another way to handle that situation. >> there's no reason for what he did. he could have gone to any other teacher and who were probably just feet away from them and have them handle the situation. >> he was arrested friday on four counts of battery on a child. he has been released on bail. >> developing news this morning. former senator george mcgov on has died. he passed away at a 'speaks in south dakota. man known as america's leading liberal actually came from

about the giants but the 49ers are also making an impact both on and off the field. our reporter reports on the 49ers academy and how it's making a difference for bay area kids. >> the talent. >> this is the news, 49ers style put on by the children in the media center paid for by gerald rice and steve young. >> this is the question, do teachers have lives? >> high-tech studio is one part of the 49ers academy. a public middle school supported by a nonprofit partnership with the 49ers football team. the idea is to make sure that students in low income east palo alto get the same opportunities at kids in wealthier area. >> most of our students fall below the poverty level. sometimes we serve students that are homeless, that are in foster care. >> the 49s are academy fills in the gaps with extended school day, extracurricular activities, counseling, free afterschool programs and caring adults that

support us and provide this kind of wraparound services to our children is just incredible. >> abc7 news. >> maybe you saw it earlier this morning when one of the best meteor shows in years was on display. it has dazzled onlookers all month long. overnight it was at its peak with up to 20 meteorites an hour. while rotating around the sun the earth moved into the path of debris. astronomers say the best places to see the light show is away from the lights so you can really see it when it's dark obviously. >> speaking of debris, good idea to clean out the gutters and clean up around the house because we have some pretty gusty winds headed our way in association with a pretty strong cold front. the first significant one. season headed our way. i'll tell you when.

>> i know. things have really changed dramatically. here we go again, the cold front on the way but today we will squeeze out a dry day before the rain comes just in time to clean up out there before we have the gusty winds. and the first significant rain that will bring anywhere from a half to three quarters inch around the bay area. 7:25 the official sunrise. setting at 6:23. ten hours, fifty-ite minutes of day light. the live doppler bringing up the cloud cover. we look for the high and mid-level clouds throughout the day today. they will increase. we are talking about partly cloudy skies now. upper 40s. boy, it's a chilly start around the south bay. 42 napa. and warmer waters around the water. 53 oakland. everyone as much as two to fourteen degrees colder. as you head out this morning grab the jacket. the clouds thickening but a good day to clean up the gutters or

any of the fallen tree limbs or limbs that look like they will come down because pretty gusty winds will accompany a cold front that will push through the bay area tomorrow through the early to late morning hours. here's the culprit. it's an area of low pressure well to the north of us. the system is still developing. it will ten to slide down the canadian coast and that will give way to more clouds. it will happen throughout the afternoon. but the rain will hold off until the we hours of the morning. so the giants game does look good, but here's the timing. the first in a series of systems. the first one will be the strongest. it's this one here could bring us a few showers past 10:00. but more likely the rain comes in 3:00, 4:00 in the morning in the north bay, and it doesn't pass us by until about that 7:00 to 10:00 time period. then after that some scattered showers throughout the afternoon and a weaker system comes our way on tuesday. but the winter storm warning upgraded from the winter storm watch in the sierra nevada for

tomorrow. it could bring anywhere from 10 to 16 inches of snow along the sierra crest, and below 7,000 feet we are talking about a half foot, give or take a couple inches. so looking pretty good. you know by next week it will all be melted because temperatures will be going in the other direction. today the numbers coming down with the cloud cover. it will be breezy along the coast. the low 60s from half moon bay. 65 in the city. yesterday we managed some 70s, but today it will be cooler out there, 70 in gilroy. tonight at&t park the winds will be kicking up. that on shore flow increases. so with the cloudy skies starting out on the mild category, and then dropping through the 50s. but the rain holds off and we will look for that for tomorrow. in fact, temperatures over the next couple days really coming down. i lost my seven-day. i can tell you about it. the rain pushes through tomorrow and then a chance on tuesday. wednesday we are looking at the

race is on. >> the giants ever are still alive in the nlcs. barry zito made sure of that forcing a game six back at&t park today with ryan vogelsong on the hill. vogelsong kept the cardinals off balance in game two. seven solid innings. walked two and struck out four. manager mike matheny is impressed with what he sees in vogelsong. >> he's got good stuff, he's having a strong season and he's been able to make adjustments. that's why he's had the kind of season he's had. our guys are going to have to be a little more disciplined in their zone and not miss the mistakes. but he did make a whole lot last time. we will see what kind of adjustments our guys can make between the last start and tomorrow. 4:37 first pitch and, of course, the raiders hosting jacksonville. we will have the highlights tonight at five. i'm mike shumann, have a great day.

a competing school spending measure is prop 38. the governor and teachers union are also campaigning against prop 32, which they say will limit teachers' participation in the political process. if you work for the state of california the recession may not have hurt you too badly. at least not in terms of your salary. a new study reveals state employees have fared much better in the paycheck department than workers in the private sector. abc7 news capital correspondent nannette miranda reports from sacramento. a new center for government analysis study shows a big discrepancy in paychecks when you compare state workers versus californians on a per capita basis. the estimated state worker wages, including pensions, were roughly $65,000 a year back in 2005. it jumped to $80,000 five years later. a difference of 23%. for the rest of californians,

personal per capita income was almost $39,000 a year, increasing to more than $42,000. a jump of only 10% in the same time period. the howard jarvis tax association funded the research, calling the numbers a dangerous compensation trend. >> this is demonstrating how california mis-spent money. the state employees have received compensation increases not found in the private sector, and that's one of the reasons we find ourselves in perennial deficit situations. >> the report concluded had the public sector grew at the same rate as the per capita income levels, the state of california would have saved $2.1 billion, enough to add 25,000 teachers. >> the public employees union disagree with the report which they say unfairly labels them as the source of california's budget problem. >> they point out per capita

>> this morning we've got some good news about the environment and it comes in a very cute package. river otters had almost completely vanished from the bay area and now they are making a comeback. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has this morning's assignment 7 report. 7:00 a.m. in the marin headlands. a perfect time for a family swim. this is a lagoon where volunteers are looking for otters. >> i've seen an otter every time i've been out here. >> these are river otters that need fresh water to survive.

they go in salt occasionally, but don't confuse them with their cousin the sea otter who spend most of their time in the ocean. river otters used to be in every creek in the bay area but they disappeared. >> partially because of hunt asking trapping but also because of a lot of our watersheds were in terrible disrepair and there was no much pollution. >> this map shows the known otter territory in is the 95. notice almost no otters in the bay area. but years of work to clean our waterways appear to be paying off. the otters are back. >> all the otters that we see look really healthy and well-fed. >> megan is a naturalist who helped launch the river otter ecology project >> turns out there's almost nothing known about their populations or their rain -- ranges. >> megan and other volunteers known at otter spotters are combing the bay area looking for evidence to add to the science. >> there's a little trail going in there. >> they take photos and videos which they post on their web site. an interactive map on the site shows the locations of more than 150 otters spotted around the bay area in the last year. the to otter ecology project set up motion activated cameras to catch otters in action when

people are not around during the day and at night. river otters actually spend quite a bit of time on land. they are very social and they like to play. but they aren't always good at sharing. one volunteer caught this video of an otter stealing a fish from his buddy. a word of caution here. cute as they are, they are fierce and have a strong bite so you should not get too close to them. even so, the people who do this kind of otter stalking get hooked on it. >> and i can't help it. they are really cool. >> he is a biology researcher with u.c. berkeley. hillary is an otter keeper at the san francisco zoo. andrea works with the otters at the oakland zoo. even though they get paid to take care of otters in captivity, they choose to spend their free time searching for wild otters. >> this is exactly what i want to do, what i am interested in but i don't have the means or

ability to do it on my own. >> a small amount of training anyone can join the team. in addition to look for actual otters, you search for clues indicating how the animals use their habitat. otters have big, web feet that leave distinctive tracks. >> if you come closer and look, you can see a perfect animal trail going up there. if you are able to be an animal and scoot through this little hole and up the hill, you would find a lot of trails like this. >> there are several animals using the hillside but the team can going out if otters are among them by looking for, well, otter poop. >> you just pick it up. >> the team collects otter poop for genetic analysis. they document where they found it and take photos. they even have a name for this. >> pooparazzi. >> it's not always glamorous, but it's fun. they hope it will encourage people to protect them and that fragile habitat. dan ashley. abc7 news.

this picture overdoes it a little bit because there are holes in the overcast and that's allowing for the temperatures to cool significantly this morning. we drop into the low 40s in the napa valley. 49 in fremont and mid-40s on the coast. partly cloudy this morning with the clouds thickening throughout the afternoon. an outside chance of a shower before midnight but the bulk of the rain comes around 4:00 in the north bay. the cold frontal passage with the gusty winds and heaviest rains for the morning commute from north to south across the bay area. a strong jet stream, an area of low pressure with cold air and a vigorous low that will hang out over much of northern california for the first several days of the week. then we get little pieces of emergency that move through come tuesday, keeping the chance of showers going. another chance on wednesday. and then finally that storm

track lifts to the north. we are timing it out for you. you will notice the cloud cover throughout the day. 3:00 tomorrow morning the rain has begun in ukiah, santa rosa. here comes the tonight and we could see winds gust up to 20 and 30 miles an hour over the east bay hills for a brief time. really unfortunate with this rain as we push through the morning provided because this is the first significant one and the oils have built up on the road. try to give yourself some extra time. then it moves into the mountains. here's the next piece of energy that by the overnight hours monday and tuesday morning could drop a little bit more rain. and then by wednesday a slight chance favoring the north bay and the coast. but rainfall amounts anywhere from a quarter to a half-inch on the peninsula, upwards up to an inch in the mountains of the north bay. then in the south bay a tenth. it's favoring parts of the north bay and central bay and today a few showers along the north

coast. otherwise temperatures will be on the comfortable side with 60s and 70s, but certainly cooler than yesterday. the sea breeze up to 20 miles an hour. 65 today in the city, 67 in fremont and down by the monterey bay, yeah, we will look for the increasing clouds. a few peaks of sun, though. still a pretty nice afternoon. the bmx skateboarding still going on on harrison street and in the excelsior district it's sunday streets. giants tonight, cloudy skies, a little breezy. but look at the numbers. best chance of rain tomorrow for everyone and then another shot overnight tuesday favoring the coast wednesday. we are back to comfortable temperatures by the end of the week. >> wow, and i depend on you to tell me when we set the clock back. that's coming up soon? >> i think the first weekend in november. >> thank you, lisa. social media is playing a big role this election season.
