people. about 300,000 citizens of only. >> the recent killing happening from vernon. he was a rest dented at a nearby halfway house and was shot down in a hail of gunfire. there were at least 15 shots fired. they are following leads in that indication and talking about another homicide, another they feel they have solved. a gang-related shooting. >> four individuals in connection about with a homicide on january 29 of this year. we are looking for a fifth person related to the homicide. >> reporter: help is on the way to oakland pd. at the direction of governor brown it will provide help to oakland and stockton police forces. this is a result of a promise made by the governor to open the gospel church on sunday when the governor was pressed for help by the bishop jackson. >> we have seen when highway

16-year-old set her body and house on fire to cover up the crime. one is a distant relative of the victim's family. sheriff's deputies say he was arrested when he flew to tennessee after committing the crime. sheriff's department were intent to burglarizing her home. 16-year-old has been charged as an adult in that crime. now we have learned there is a bay area connection to a horrifying crime in new york in which a nanny is accused of killing two young children. katie marzullo joins us from the newsroom. family use to live and work here. >> reporter: the family used to live in san francisco noe valley they bought their home last year and now they live in manhattan the scene of a horrible tragedy. on 75th street nanny on a stretcher being rushed to a hospital. the children in her care appear

to be breathing as they were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. their mother having discovered two of her children stabbed to death in the bathtub was escorted under a white sheet with her only surviving child. >> she is crying out, what am i going to do with my rest of my life. i have no children. >> they had been at swimming lessons and came home to a dark apartment. >> they had gone out themselves. >> reporter: the father, kevin a former yahoo executive was a business trip. police met him at j.f.k. airport with the horrific news. police say after the nanny

stabbed the children she slit her throat in a suicide attempt. she worked with the family for about a year. they hired her after the youngest was born. they traveled to the dominican republic to spend more than a week with her family. ortega's niece says the aunt had seemed off and kind of acting nervous but she loved both kids. >> she is still in critical condition. she has not yet been formally charged with the killings and has no criminal record. police are baffled had a motivated her to do such a thing >> kristen: this morning, students at albany high school is remembering a 12th grade student whose body was found on the beach this past weekend. she had been a runaway since last month. her body was found on sunday. school officials say she was a honor student and a member of the tennis team.

they are awaiting toxicology reports to determine the cause of death. >> cheryl: we are getting first look at brasken robbery. here is video of one of the security cameras inside gold rush jewelers yesterday. the thief asked clerk to show a couple watches and then ran off with them. the thief tried to jump into a toyota with another woman behind the wheel. >> police in the south bay are looking for this man who they say has robbed six banks since august. he is wanted for holdups in san jose, los gatos and most recently a sunnyvale bask of america. he is described as 5'9" tall and stocky. >> kristen: san francisco giants took off detroit within the past 15 minutes packing dreams of another world series title. this after the team pout determined show for elated fans.

>> kristen: more than 20 deaths are being blamed on hurricane sandy and it's racing toward the east coast which could be another major storm. take a look at fort lauderdale beach where you can see the large powerful waves and can tell by the trees it's very windy. it could affect some 50 million people with tropical storm force winds hitting the eastern seaboard. it will get history hit by a blast of arctic air someplace between washington, d.c. and new york. boat owners are starting to protect their yachts and homeowners are boarding up their windows. >> cheryl: mike nicco is here to show us where sandy is at the moment and where it is headed?

>> here is a look at live radar and miami, florida. the bulk of the storm is offshore. we are getting wrap around storms as it continues to pump moisture over the land but good thing is it is offshore. rip currents the biggest concern right now. it could actually strengthen a little bit over the next day or so. right now, two players. arctic cold front and tropical system that we call sandy as a hurricane. these are going to converge, new york, philadelphia and d.c. around monday and into tuesday and then linger there wednesday. now because you have two such different air masses colliding together that is why it is such a big storm. perfect storm we had back in 1991 but over land. you can see it move up and stay offshore. we're on the west side but
