new details are emerging about the nanny accused of stabbing two children to death in a horrific crime, and then

stabbed herself. she is still alive on a breathing tube. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson of the the fame has -- carolyn johnson. the family has close ties to the bay area. they lived in san francisco for years. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> new york city detectives have not figured out why a nanny would have violently stabbed two young children in her care, but they are thousand saying the 50-year-old woman may have been having financial problems and recently sought psychological help. the disturbing murder of two children in this manhattan apart meant building sent shock waves across the country of the she returned home to find two of her children stabbed to death in a bath to be. two-year-old leo and six-year-old lucia killed by their nanny. and then she started stabbing herself when the mother walked in. she was later wheeled away on a stretcher. >> on the floor of the

bathroom is the nanny who apparently inflicted wounds on her throat. >> reporter: they recently moved to new york from san francisco. their former neighbors are shocked to hear of the tragedy. >> i remember that he had gotten a job. they were going to move to new york. >> reporter: this is a neighborhood of lots of young families with children. many with nannies of their own. both parents work. even for those who did not know the c ri ms, this is a tragedy that is especially scary. >> i think it is alarming. it is one of those awful nightmares you wish never happened. it is one of those scary things you can't anticipate in life. >> reporter: the family was only in new york a couple years. according to a former neighbor they put a lot of money into renovating their home before they moved. >> they were definitely nice people. he was a techy. >> reporter: he worked at yahoo!.

he was on a flight from san francisco to new york when the attack happened. he was met by police at the airport. following the attack, maria and her surviving child were ushered out of their apartment with a sheet over their head. their nanny remains in a coma. and police have not been able to talk to her because she remains in a medically-enduced coma. according to a new york times story, they hired ortega upon the recommendation of friends and not through an agency. they seemed to have a good relationship with her. kevin's parents say they would often fly her to see her family in the dominican republic. in the newsroom, sergio quintana, abc news. >> thank you very much. a man uh us coulded -- accused of torching a law office was guilty of that fire and two others. we go now live with the latest on the story. alan, it sounds like they have made the connection.

>> and they think he set a funeral home and church on fire too. we found out the connection goes back more than a decade ago. >> when the mayor surveyed the damage of his burned out law office last month, he told abc7 news he believed the attack was politically motivated. >> i can tell you the motive was not politically motivated. he has disdain for the system and the rules we are governed by. >> reporter: 44-year-old maud love used an ago sell rent to set fire to the mayor's office. >> did the mayor even know who he was, who he is? >> again that's not something i want to comment on. >> reporter: according to family members, love asked the mayor to handle his mother's estate after she died in 1999. love ended up being forced out of the house his mother owned and family members say love has always blamed the mayor. records show love filed a civil suit against obey --

osbey davis. >> we have been looking at him as a lead in a series of arsons which has plagued our city. >> reporter: police say he set the mortuary on fire on june 6th. the funeral home handled the service for his mother. he is also accused of throwing a firebomb through the window of the taylor chapel on june 30th. family members say love always felt the church was evil. we tried to contact the mayor, but he did not return our calls. meanwhile, maud love is in jail charged with three counts of arson. reporting live in vallejo, alan wang, abc7 news. >> thank you. gunfire between two groups of teenagers brought richmond high school's homecoming dance to a halt. police locked down the gym for half an hour starting at 8:30. officers were on the scene of the dance and quickly responded to the incident. shots were fired about a block

away from the school. it involved an argument between a group of teenagers. those involved were not students according to police. the dance resumed around 9:00. also new at 11:00, an unidentified 79-year-old woman died after she was struck by an suv. police say it happened around 5:00 in or near a san jose crosswalk by the intersection of taler and north 6th streets. the 32-year-old male driver of the suv is cooperating with police. sports making news. sharks fans are looking at a bleak future tonight because of the nhl lockout. the national hockey league canceled all its games through the end of november. that wipes out an additional 12 sharks games, seven of which were scheduled to be at home. no further meetings are scheduled between the league and the players association. so this will go on. giants' fans are celebrating their extended season. the giants now halfway to the world series title. abc7 news caught up with the team as players and coaches boarded a bus outside at&t park.

the world's oceans are already facing an extreme threat from overfishing, but an equally severe problem is just getting attention. the oceans are turning more acidic and it is happening fast. that's bad for the animals who live in the water, of course,

but as you will see tonight, it could also be very bad for us. it is staggering, really, but only 5% of the ocean has been explored. that's enough for scientists to know there is trouble underwater. the same fossil fuels polluting the air are also making the ocean more acidic. >> it has incalculable risks associated with it. it may overshadow global warming. >> silvia earl is one of the most represented marine biologists. she was named a living legend by the library of congress. she founded the company that builds submersibles that explore the ocean. she is a fellow at the academy of sciences that shot this video. when it comes to ocean research, silvia is the gold standard. and she says it is time the rest of us start paying attention. >> we are messing around with the chemistry of the planet. >> reporter: at the moments she is focusing on tiny organisms.

it is a greenish single cell creature discovered by the mit professor. this glass of ocean water could willed ho billions. could hold billions. >> it contributes 20% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. >> reporter: an incredible one-fifth comes from this minute species, critical to life as we know it. >> it does two important things. it generates oxygen, and it takes up carbon. carbon dioxide. it trans -- transforms that to cor bow hydrates. it is -- carbohydrates. >> reporter: but the fragile ecosystem is damaged by excess carbon from cars, power plants and factories. the carbon turns the ocean more acidic making it caw corrosive to shellfish and coral. they are not sure of the affect, but silvia says we can't wait to find out. >> the trend is clear. we are losing elements that

and water and food for three days. this super storm is expected to make landfall on monday night near the delaware coast. the airlines are warning about delays and all are waiving fees for passengers who want to reschedule their flights to stay out of the way. cold air is moving down. it is really something. sandhya patel is tracking sandy for us. >> we will see hurricane sandy right now. the outer bands of rain off the coast of florida. it is starting to get a little across south carolina there. what is going to happen with this storm? right now it is a category one minimal hurricane as you will see. packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles an hour. it is moving north at seven miles an hour. the biggest concern with this storm is that it will merge with a cold storm and arctic air will move in. if this all comes together it could spell major trouble for the east coast. here is the forecast track. it will skirt the carolina

coastline -- the mid-atlantic coastline. then it will work toward the northwest and moving on board as it comes on shore around either washington, d.c. or baltimore early tuesday evening and heading into wednesday. this is when they could be talking about some very powerful winds. coastal flooding is possible if the heavy rain comes down. if the cold air comes in with the cold storm and merging the two, the hybrid storm what is being called a possible super storm could spell major trouble with some heavy, wet snow for that area. here in the bay area, a different story. we do have low clouds to show you along the coast. inland skies are clear. here is what it looked like when the skies are clear enough. i want to show you this time lapse. it is a waxing gibbous. 94% of full. this was from our high definition south beach camera. lovely view. you will be getting views like this over the next couple days as we do have a nice mild to warm pattern setting up.
