>> good morning, everything. here's a look from the roof camera. the pavement is a little bit wet but we are enjoying somewhat of a break between our next system, which is still slated to arrive tonight. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. we have a smattering of light rain showers in the city and along the coastline. morgan hill and gilroy, highway 101, a little bit of wet weather through castroville. we have more weather to go on the way today. it will be on and often rain showers, though. so temperatures once again on the mild side. starting out with mid-50s to about 60 around the bay. and by the afternoon still a chance ever showers, low to mid-60s. it's not until the evening hours that we are looking at the rain becoming more intense in the north bay. i'm talking sonoma and marin. if you have plans tonight you will be in the rain but the heaviest rain when you are

sleeping. we will detail the flood watches and the timing of the rain coming up in a little bit. katie. >> thanks so much. as the next big storm moves in, the big concern is the north bay. take a look at this video from outside of the stump down brewery in this time-lapse webcam video. you can see how quickly the river has risen. allen long reports from sonoma county where the national weather service has issued a flood warning. >> certainly it will be up to here. the flood stage or the expectations at gurnville is 32 feet. >> his trailer sits on the banks of the river and he has watched the river rise 17 feet. he's packing up and heading for higher ground. >> it's not fortunate it. fortunately my little house has wheels on it. >> even the crete us are headed for higher ground. and several low lying back roads of flooded and it only took a

foot of water to stall out this car. >> we were coming from windsor and going to the small. and we were taking the back roads by sack rosa. >> samuel and his friends said they saw the flood warning signs but tried to cross anyway. >> once we got to the water you could see the car just like smoke started coming out and they tried to turn the car off and turn it back on. didn't work. so we opened the doors and all the water just came in. >> everybody thinks they can come through it, and they don't make it. >> nicholas william, who lives nearby, said he pulled three cars out of this flooded park of west mark station road. >> when they do that to their car, what happens? >> they ruin it. costs them with $5,000 to replace the motor. >> so far the storms have done relatively little damage up hear in the north bay but the ground is pretty well saturated. and we have another wave of rain coming at us. reporting in santa rosa, i'm allen wong, abc7 news. a couple hundred people in the santa cruz mountains are still without power this morning and hay way 9 is still shut down

because of downed power lines. abc7 news reporter sergio has more from santa cruz county. >> pg&e crews are working to get power restored on this stretch of highway 29. this has been cut away by power crews and a few yards up the road only one building has electricity. >> you try to get ahead of the ballgames. a lot of husband have small generators. >> his generator is humming along at his general store but some of his neighbors are having to settle with tiki lamps and candles to get through the night and the trouble caused by the storm. >> this is our first one of the year. usually they dent hit until around january or february but this time it caught us a little early. >> this highway has been shut down. plenty of drivers had to turn around and find alternate routes. >> i'm going to find a little road that loops around. >> three teams are working on restoring power to the area. meanwhile the rain continues to

come in waves. and even with the power out, residents say it could be a whole lot worse. >> this town has had its warm storm. the worst time is when it's cold and drearily, it's cold and you can't warm up and we are around 60 degrees so it's not too bad. >> pg&e crews hoped to have the power line repaired and highway 9 reopened by about 9:00 in the morning but they have had to push that. now they are hoping to have it open around 11:00 in the morning. in santa cruz county, abc7 news. the wet weather has created problems all over the bay. in san francisco yesterday a treetop he would on to a mercedes along pine street in lower pacific heights. luckily no one was hurt but the mess sure did shut down a major town artery for a short time. fallen trees and downed power lines kept crews business in marin county, as well. flooding submerged the parking .

and one official told abc7 news you can often blame needing like this on either leaves or litter clogging up the. a spinout on wet roads in antioch damaged three cars and sent a child and adult to the hospital. it happened early yesterday afternoon on highway 4. the chp cannot confirm initial reports the child was actually ejected from the car but we know the three-year-old boy was airlift today children's hospital in oakland. the adult was taken to a hospital in brentwood. >> in other news a san francisco elementary school is working to try to stop the spread of a gastro outbreak. abc7 news tells us what is being done about it. >> the number of students are absent or become ill at school

with gastro enteritis. it includes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and or stomach cramps. >> she knew something was going around but she wasn't notified. >> i heard yesterday about 28 kids were out. >> her son was sick last week. >> the day before thanksgiving he was fine and then on thanksgiving he woke up really sick from his stomach. he wasn't able to eat any turkey or any of that. >> an administrator with the school told me nearly 150 schools and faculty members stayed home. the aftercare program ran as scheduled but with precaution. >> we were given mats because 150 children are sick so we want to help them as much as we can but we also want to protect ourselves at the same time. >> some of the students may have been kept home as a precaution. the campus has been sanitizing the school over the weekend.

and some told us their lunchtime was, in her words, up to par. sings fairmont is being cleaned over the weekend, school is expected to go on as usual on monday morning but parents are urged to keep their kids home if they have any symptoms of the virus. in san francisco, abc7 news. new this morning, today is world a.i.d.s. day. several groups are offering free hiv testing. there are sponsored events to commemorate worlds a.i.d.s. day. from 11 to two, free hiv tests and counseling will be offered at the delta bay church of christ on railroad avenue in pittsburgh and at 8:00 tonight in concord a candle light vigil will take place at the park. officials say the most recent census figures show the number of people living with a.i.d.s. was up in 2011 compared with four years earlier. coming up next, tensions are escalating again between north and south korea.

scattered. more to the south around watsonville. the winds are breezy. they have kicked up to about 30 miles an hour from san jose along the central coast and the east bay you have notice from los gatos and highway one, south through morgan hill and gilroy, that's the most concentrated rain. we will see the light on and off rain showers throughout the day today. shouldn't be bad if you have plans to go out, but you will need the umbrella and by tonight and into tomorrow we will get into some flood concerns and the heaviest of the rain will be pushing on out of here. that's the good news. and that's by tomorrow afternoon. katie. >> thank you. new this morning north korea said it will try again to launch a long range rocket, one capable of reaching northern california. they said the launch will take place sometime between december 10th and the 22th. it comes as their leader meets to chinese officials to discuss relations. it also comes ahead of south

korea's december 19th presidential election. north korea an officials say they have made improvements since the last launch from broke up at take off. >> and there was a ceremony at the mexican palace. the president elect received the country's mag before the guard of honor and members of the new cabinet. he will officially be sworn into office later today. he is a member of the institutional revolutionary party which ruled mexico for seven decades until losing power amidst a scandal in 2000. he promise the to govern democratically and with transparency. an oregon man is recovering from a shark attack in hawaii while authorities are trying to decide whether to reopen about two miles of beach. he was snorkeling on maui when the shark attacked him about 200 yards offshore.

he suffered cuts on his leg and thigh and was rescued by hive guards. he knew the shark was about two feet wide but didn't know what type of shark it was that attacked him. >> we will start an assessment and have all the different agencies get together and they will make a determination as to when exactly to open the waters again. >> the attack took place near the central resort of kehe on the south side of nowry. the teenager who was denied an eagle scout award because he was gay will be honored by officials on monday. he spent ten years working toward the award and last year scout officials said ryan violated the anti-gay policy. on monday he will be honored at the opening session of the state assembly. new details this morning on a peregrine falcon that was shot on thanksgiving day in watsonville. on monday the wildlife experts told us the falcon was going to

although it's tapering off throughout the day today, we are looking at that last system. it looks like the strongest system. although the good news is it's a relatively quick mover. i don't think it's going to stall out over us. so that will get it out of here for the rest of sunday. live doppler 7 hd, around american canyon a few light showers. along the coast, highway 1 also. most of the activity is confined to the peninsula and the south bay. and a little bit down through morgan hill. so all in all, the moist flow continues. you can see plenty of cloud cover off the coast and the frontal band and that area of low pressure is still well offshore. it will take several hours to get here. right now upper 50s to 60. very mild out there. 68 san jose. once again, the winds. tonight we will have gusts up to

30 miles an hour. so once again, it kind of is reminiscent of the past system, although this one i think will sweep on out of here right on through the afternoon. so we've got that to look forward to. showers on and off today. heavy rain and wind tonight through tomorrow morning and flood warnings for the rivers of the north bay. so a flash flood watch in effect through tomorrow night for the north bay. the coastal mountains. san francisco, the peninsula, the santa cruz mountains, monterey and down through big sur. so small streams. we could see that flooding right on through the afternoon and into portions of monday. here's a look at high surf advisory. this is through 10:00 this morning. san francisco goes through sunday at 5:00. so here's the satellite and radar composite. our next system, the little impulse provides the on and off showers throughout the day today, but the main event is still offshore. and that is what is going to get enhanced as it moves on over the bay area late tonight and tomorrow. a lot of moisture with this system.

so here's the timing. here we are throughout the morning hours. you can see some areas of rain, but by the afternoon, 3:00 we do have that break. but as you head through the six, seven o'clock hour, more heavy rain but it's not until owe eleven o'clock tonight that the band of very heavy rain heads our way this time tomorrow. 8:00, the:00, 11:00 it passes through the north bay. then the rest of the day we around picking up any green on the screen. but rainfall totals through tomorrow night, two to five to five inches, up to seven inches in the north bay mountains that. is the reason why we are looking at some flooding. gurnville, hoplin, napa and saint helena. at the coliseum we will see temperatures in the upper 50s. a little sloppy there. breezy winds today. on and off showers. monterey bay, same deal. and 62 monterey. the forecast, you will notice

here's the russian river. residents are being a dramatic change in the river levels. one man whose trailer sits on the banks of the river. he watch the river rise 17 feet yesterday. flood signs popped up across highways and low-lying back roads. some drivers ignored those warning signs and tried to cross anyway with no luck. >> we were coming from windsor. we were going to santa rosa to the mall and then we took the back roads up to santa rosa. once we got like to the water, you could see the car, just like smoke start the coming out and aaron tried to turn the car off and turn it back on. didn't work. and then so we opened the doors and all the water just came in. >> everybody thinks they can come through it, and they don't make it. >> a windsor resident told abc7 news he pulled three cars out of a flooded part of the road. russian river is expected to approach flood stage throughout the weekend. but it is expected to remain in

it's bank beginning early tomorrow morning. a state of emergency is declared for douglas county. crew in reno are already filling sandbags this an industrial section of sparks that could be under four feet of water by 7:00 tomorrow night. the truck key river is expected to reach four feet above flood stage from 395 in reno through sparks. and in california the river is predicted to flood between squaw creek and the town. there is potential for major damage to home, roads and bridges by late tomorrow morning. rain in the bay area usually means snow in the sierra and some ski resorts plan on being open this weekend. kirkwood ski resort provided these pictures showing what it look like at the bottom of the slopes. kirkwood, heavenly and northstar all plan to be open today. they have video that show the ski lifts at sugar bowl. they will be closed because of

high winds. sky valley and high meadows say hi winds might keep them from opening today as well. this morning two minutes are in custody and charged with plotting to help terrorists plot a strike against americans. they are brothers and naturalized citizens living in south florida. they tell us they were part after weapon to obtain weapons of mass destruction. >> tonight two men are in custody accusing are plotting to bomb the homeland. they are identified at naturalized citizens from pakistan. sources tell abc7 news this was not a sting and the younger brother had been in contact with overseas radicals possibly connect today al-qaeda. they are accused of providing lodging, communication and transportation in a conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. and the fbi found residents the younger brother was monitoring

sting cases. >> abc news, washington. a 17-year-old boy is san jose's 43rd homicide of the year. he was found shot to death last night around 11:30 near pacific and lincoln avenues. police suspect the murder may have been gang related, but they have not released any suspect information. los gatos police are releasing little information about the murder of a multi-millionaire venture capitalist in his home. 66-year-old robbie was found yesterday morning. his wife called 911 and told authorities she had been beaten by as many as four attackers. police declined to say if anything was taken or if the security gate was open. on tuesday contra costa county supervisors are expected to vote to close four fire station in the contra costa fire district starting in january. the cost-cutting move comes after county voters rejected measure two, a temporary partial

afghanistan where the author was born. these images are from the foundation's website. he lives in san jose now and he's internationally known for his best-selling book set in afghanistan "the kite runner" and" the thousand splendid sons." he spends his free time raising money for shelters like this for homeless families in afghanistan and to provide educational opportunities and healthcare for women and children. the need is overwhelming after 30 years of war. >> a lot of times people are left homeless without jobs, without food, access to clean water, education, healthcare. >> some resort to living underground to stay alive. >> there would be anywhere from 15 to 25 people essentially living in these holes that have one opening at the very top as a window and they were living there for two, three, three and a half months. winter in afflalo afghanistan in many parts of the country is brutal. freezing temperatures and routinely i would go to villages

and see the elders complain about the sick and the elderly and the children tharpe -- that they were losing every winter due to the control. this is one of the reason for building the shelters that cost six or seven thousand people for six or seven people. it can be a life saving structure. >> families get a prepackaged kit and ball the shelter themselves. >> they are given the raw materials and given the window frames, the doors, the beams. >> so far this foundation has raised enough money to build nearly 400 shelters to house 2300 people. his wife is helping afghan women who remain in refugee camps in pakistan with to make jewelry through a nonprofit. >> all the income generated by the sale of these items is reinvested in the lives of those women in helping with food, jobs and medicine. >> the doctor is tapping into his young fan base to help in

his mission. >> i have so many letters from high school students saying that i would like to do something for afghanistan. i will like to do something for kids just like me in afghanistan. >> he designed a program called s. o. s., student outreach for shelter. >> all these students are reading my books in their classroom but there's a service learning component and a curriculum where students can partner with us and raise funds to build shelters for returning refugees in afghanistan. >> i'm going to be fundraising and helping out with this organization in any way that i can. >> he attends the harper school in san jose. he's passionate about his new fundraising drive on campus to help homeless afghans. >> i feel it's unfair to them because they have worked so hard to establish themselves and all of a sudden a war happens and they are pulled out. >> he said he is hoping a lot more young people want to get involved with his foundation and help homeless afghan families. had they do, it will be a real live history lesson. >> i hope that this really works and i hope that we can change

people's lives, and i hope that we have a big part in rebuilding afghanistan. >> cheryl jennings, abc7 news. leaders in san mateo county are hoping people will help stuff the bus with toys today to benefit the san mateo county children's fund. the stuff the bus toy drive actually involves two buss and a fire truck all making stops today. the first opportunity will be at 8:00 this morning at buck's restaurant on wood side road in wood side. that bus will also make stops in half moon bay and san mateo. the fire truck starts out at 9:00 on laurel street in san carlos. it will also stop at kohl's plaza this afternoon. and bus two in daily center city shopping center food court at 11:00 a.m. lots of chances today. this morning. lisa argen here now to fill us in with the breaks, what's next. the two down, one to go. >> i like that, breaks and what's next, two down, one to go. that's exactly it. we are in the break. two are behind us. heaviest with gusty winds tonight. but we have on and off rain showers as you look outside. this is downtown. we are talking once again about the subtropical moist air mass over the bay area. temperatures mild, the ground is wet, and you will run into light showers from time to time. a live doppler 7 hd shows you the east bay and also san francisco. we do have some wet weather from berkeley, oakland, alameda and san leandro. the blue indicates light rain from hayward to san ramon valley and westward. san francisco, 280 and san braun no on the wet side for you. and certainly down through fremont. san jose we talked about the light showers and around morgan

hill, the coast. so, you know, things aren't going to change significantly until we get into this system and then behind it. so the rain will really give us a break throughout the afternoon but look at all the cloud cover. we've got a big area that is going to move in over us, bringing us the heavy rain and the gusty winds. mostly while you are sleeping into tomorrow morning. it's 60 in fremont, 66 in los gatos and wind gusts 30 miles an hour in san jose. oakland breezy to gusty winds. hayward a south gust up to 32. showers on and off throughout the day today. heavy rain and wind arrive overnight tonight into tomorrow morning and flood warnings for the rivers of the north bay. we also have a flash flood watch through tomorrow night for several inches of rain predicted here for the north bay. we are looking at smaller streams that may overtop their banks and storm drains may be overwhelmed from the santa cruz mountains, monterey bay and the

coastline. so hopefully if you had a chance, i saw a lot of folks yesterday cleaning up some of the debris. high surf advisory has been extended from 10:00 this morning into 5:00 tomorrow night all along the coast for 12 do 15-foot swells. pretty dangerous conditions out there. looking at lighter showers with the little trough that's going to sweep on through throughout the day today and they will keep the rain kind of hit-or-miss here or there. but a lot of people out on a saturday. really be careful out there even though it's not the morning commute, this is what is slated to move our way tomorrow morning. and that will bring the rises on the rivers. but here's the timing of if. notice today we are looking at the showers. but right through 2:00, 3:00, we have a nice little break. >> but it's by 7:00, 8:00 more showers begin gather. and here we are overnight. 8:00 tomorrow morning some very heavy rain, gusty winds and by 11:00 the north bay is out of it

and the rest of the bay area will get a chance to dry out as well the rest of the day tomorrow. rainfall amounts, we are talking 2.5 to 5 inches in the north bay and up to 7 inches in the extreme north bay mountains and one to two inches in the south bay with an inch and a half to three inches on the peninsula. for the game today look for showers and breezy conditions at the oakland coliseum. that's tomorrow. i'm mixed up from today 20 tomorrow but today we are looking at upper 60s in oakland, 64 san francisco and around the monterey bay still the shower activity. so the worst is yet to come. the gusty winds, the heavy rain, the potential for flooding. but then we are looking at it to rapidly move on out, bringing us partly cloudy skies on monday, a little light rain tuesday and wednesday and then looks like more dry weather thursday and friday. >> if we can just hang in there one more day? >> yeah. >> thank you, lisa. some changes are coming to bay area phone numbers. the 415 area code currently that covers san francisco, marin county and parts of bay leaf
