around the bay area tonight and even more is on the way this weekend. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama dates. carolyn johnson has the night off. rain and lightning showing up on live doppler 7hd tonight. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it closely. sandhya? >> dan and ama, over 250 lightning strikes off the coast. some of the strikes have made it to land. let me show you live doppler 7hd. right now as we take you a little bit closer, i want to show you the strikes that are right around the area that is north to the west. i will loop this for you so

you can see where these strong thunderstorms moved in. as i pull out here, i do want to show you many strikes showing up just west of sea ranch. there are heavy rains showing up there as well. i am watching this for you because as you look out over the pacific, check out the trail of lightning strikes off the coastline here. let's take you in closer now and show you where it is raining. around mill valley, ricardo road and paradise drive. we'll show you some other parts of the bay area, some moderate to heavy rain around vacaville and pleasant valley road. as we pan around the east bay 80 and san francisco is now starting to pick up some light rain around the presidio, california street and gary boulevard. much lighter toward the santa cruz mountains. it is almost just over six inches of rain up in the far northern end of sonoma

county. rainfall has varied. winds are gusty in a couple of spots up to 50 miles an hour, but not as strong as earlier today. we have scattered thunderstorms in the forecast. heavy rain coming. i'll have the timing of all of this for your holiday weekend in a few minutes. dan? >> thanks very much. the wet weather has been causing problems all over the bay area. alan wang is live in santa rosa with the story there. alan? >> dan, we had a break for awhile, and now we are starting to see the rain pick up a little out here. this is just one of the many flooded areas in sonoma county tonight. there are several washed out roads west of santa rosa. and the public works crews are expecting it to get a lot worse this weekend. joel stopped at the water's edge west of santa rosa and decided to roll the dice. >> came through a couple hours ago and it was pretty light. i thought i could make it through this time. >> unlike these trucks and suvs that made it across,

their toyota was swamped in a foot and a half of water just like the car before him. >> made a dumb mistake thinking i was bigger than that car. >> and according to the mayan calendar, today was supposed to be the end of the world. >> in the town of inverness, michelle and her husband narrowly escaped serious injury when this douglas fir crashed through their home. >> just one step and crashed. >> i was two feet and i was under all of this rubble. >> also in marin county, floodwaters shutdown a portion of highway one south of petaluma road. and in pacifica, high winds tempted the surfers, but the crabbers are playing it safe in half moon bay. they say they won't head back out for at least two more days. back in sonoma county, they were still patching up potholes and cleaning out culverts from the last storms that swept through here.

now they expect to have a lot of work to do in the coming days. reporting live in santa rosa, alan wang, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. crews in mendocino county are repairing a huge sinkhole as a truck passed on highway 162ment the semiwas torn apart when the gaping hole gave way. the driver was not injured. cal trans is working to have it passable by tomorrow. one week ago tonight the nation was shocked by what happened in newtown, connecticut. tonight and today they paused to remember it. bells rang 26 times, one for each of the children and adults killed by adam lanza. and we are learning more about the killer. a classmate says lanza could take apart and reassemble a computer in a matter of minutes, but rarely spoke to anyone. we heard today from the national rifle association for the first time since the masacre. officials from the nation's most influential gun lobby group called for armed guards to protect schools.

the nra blamed video games for violence against children. hear from the nra and those who lost loved ones in mass shootings. an east bay high school football star shot and killed in san francisco was honored tonight. sergio quintana was in the high school. >> his closest friends pay tribute through funny stories. >> my mom would always make hill food. he would love garbonzo beans. i don't know why, but he just did. >> members of the football team honored their fellow football player with a video after this event. on this friday evening a couple hundred people packed into this dimmed gymnasium to pay tribute to a fellow student, friend and talented athlete. the organizers then passed out candles and moved the crowd on to the football field. montrell was only a student since the beginning of the school year, but he left a

lasting impression. >> his smile was super contagious. you say hi and you have a bad day and his smile -- you can't help but smile back. >> huey was gunned down last weekend while visiting family in the bay view district of san francisco. police are still looking for suspects. his father bleeded for an end to gun violence -- pleaded for an end to gun violence. we are taking gifts away. we have to stop taking our gifts away. >> montrell was a football varsity letterman with a 3.8 grade po nie t average. his letter and gpa certificate were presented to his family. abc7 news. a 56-year-old woman has died from her injuries after a hit-and-run crash on san francisco's twin peaks last night. rescuers lifted three people off the hill on christmas tree road after they were struck by a car. a fourth pedestrian was also injured diving out of the way. police tracked down and arrested the 23-year-old driver. the california law banning

therapy aimed at turning gay minor straight has been blocked. the first of a kind law was passed in the state legislature and signed by governor brown this fall. the court blocked the law from taking affect january 1st until it could hear arguments on whether the law is constitutional. the shopping frenzy is underway and retailers are trying something new to help those last-minute shoppers. 24-hour sales. abc7 news reporter thomas roman is live at macy's in daily city. thomas? >> ama, dan, these stores want to make sure the last-minute shopper has someplace to go. beginning today macy's is having one of the longest one-day sales i have ever seen. they opened at 7:00 a.m. and they will go straight through until 7:00 a.m. on sunday. they are not alone. >> all of the last-minute stuff i got, i think. i have a few to go, but i'm pretty close. >> richard humphrey is a last-minute shopper who has come to the mall. the stores have some entice

meant for procrastinators. there are some offering discounts of 50, 65 or 75% off. the one store in the mall that is offering a full two days of shopping and sales is macy's. th is one of the more than 800 macy's stores that is staying open for a full 48 hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. sunday. the idea is to make sure last-minute shoppers will be able to find a store open what ever the hour. it worries frank diaz. >> concerned about who they are going to have coming in at 3:00 in the morning to shop. that's kind of crazy. >> some 57 macy's stores will stay open around the clock until christmas eve. down the peninsula in the bridge point shopping center, the toys r us stores will stay open 24 hours until 10:00 p.m. on christmas eve. while that may seem excessive to some, evan wong says it works for him. >> it is nice because i have had work all week. it is nice they are open 24 hours. i can get my gifts for my family.

a san jose parent is worried children walking to school in her neighborhood will get hurt trying to dodge cars in a busy intersection. >> it is in south san jose where there are five schools near the intersection of center road and easy street. >> the i team's dan noyes has the story. >> neighborhood children try to navigate an anxious line of commuters every morning here at the corner of center road and easy street in san jose where there is no crosswalk. >> the cars don't even stop. if they do, i feel like i have to run because they are not stoping. >> there sbt much here to -- there isn't much here to separate cars and kids. we saw for ourselves how aggressive drivers use the entire stretch of this neighborhood road as a shortcut to get to capital expressway or the freeway. how students are forced to walk close to the busy expressway. some take their chances cutting between cars. car after car after car,

blocking the way so kids can't get through. many jaywalk farther down easy street to avoid the intersection altogether. >> it is an issue to even here in this community. >> all thoi there were no -- although there were no pedestrian accidents there were 17 car crashes and many near misses. sophia lopez says she and her young children have come close to being hit more than once. >> this is a huge problem. i am fed up with it. i have been taking my son to school since he was in kindergarten. since then i have had to deal with it. >> some parents have given up. >> i know a paisht that lives down -- i know a parent that lives down the street. she drives her child to school when she can just cross the street. >> after we heard from sophia we went to city hall. >> easy street hasn't been so easy for pedestrians, right? we have known that for

awhile. >> the assistant city manager and department of transportation manager say they are familiar with the problems in the area. they installed safety measures in the past. a crossing guard up on busy intersection road. and stop signs and crosswalks and other parts of easy street, but nothing at center and easy. >> when things are quiet we know all is well. and when we start to get a caller, it has conditions that changed jai. after our call, more changes are coming to easy street. >> it has pointed out an issue. we are in response to what has been installing a crosswalk there. we will be looking to see if it warrants a crossing guard there. we will be looking to do spot enforcement along the streets so people can learn the correct behaviors. >> that means traffic tickets for speeders. >> we need people to be accountable for their action and taking pride in their community. doing the right thing is the primary message we want to get

out. >> after the i-team called he and city engineers walked the area themselves to see what was happening here. he is making lopez an offer. >> i am happy to go out and walk to school with them and see those issues firsthand from their perspective. always open to learning that way. >> we will make sure sophia gets the message. the time line is four to six weeks. we are also told they will organize more safety education in those five neighborhood schools to teachers and kids how to deal with the traffic and try to cut down on some of those risky moves you saw. for the i team, dan noyes, abc7 news. >> they are doing something about it. >> well, it is time to check on our weather which has been stormy all day. >> sandhya patel is here. >> dan and ama it is starting to intensity. i will tell you what we are seeing right now. numerous lightning strikes, now over 270 lightning strikes from the mendocino coast all the way out over the waters.

i want to show you the lightning strikes with the thunderstorms that rolled through near manchester north of point arena, and we are still watching the potential for some of this to reach land. there is heavy rainfall here and lightning strikes. 20 miles away from highway 1. be careful if you are heading out the door later tonight and doing some traveling for the holiday weekend. as we look at other parts of the bay area, mill valley, paradise drive, we are seeing moderate rain falling right now. as we head out toward the east bay out toward el cerrito and richmond, moderate rain. very light returns showing up. trace amounts. heavy rain is expected after midnight. scattered thunderstorms and rain again on sunday. so if you have travel plans this upcoming weekend it is going to be dicey at times. here is a break down. first the satellite-radar. you can see this is the storm that brought us the wet and

wind econ decisions. wet and windy conditions. here is the next wave that will bring us heavy rain. already the cold unstable air getting closer and we are seeing the lightning strikes off the coast. some of those making land. behind that another storm will create wet and windy conditions for your sunday. this is the way it all plays out. if you -- you still have last-minute holiday shopping to do. scattered rain and could be heavy in pockets. the heaviest band, 3:00 a.m. along the cold front in the north bay. thunderstorms are possible with this band. you will see across the heart of the bay area at 5:00 a.m., we are putting those thunderstorms in the forecast. east bay south bay and really this will continue as we head into your 9:00, 10:00 hour. and then behind the front scattered showers for your saturday afternoon. you should be able to get out and do some errands or get that holiday shopping done. 3:00 a.m., we are fast-forwarding. a few showers in the north bay. and then the heavy rain comes through, but it is

progressive. we will see widespread heavy rain at noon on sunday, and then behind this front we will continue to see scattered showers. it will move through, urban flood advisories as the grounds will be saturated. rainfall totals up until 7:00 p.m. sunday night. up to 4 inches in the santa cruz mountains. the rest of the bay area we are looking at lower amounts. high surf advisory until saturday at 4:00 p.m. 11 to 16 feet. northwesterly swell will continue to build. 16 to 19 feet. watch out for large breaking waves over washing beaches for the upcoming weekend. never turn your back on the waves. winter storm warning until sunday at 10:00 p.m. 2 to 5 feet of snow above 4,000 feet. snow or ski borders -- snow or ski boarders, you will love this one, visibility less than a quarter of a mile. travel delays. tomorrow morning we are looking at stormy conditions with the heavy rain and the thunderstorms. mid40s to low 50s. tomorrow afternoon, umbrella
