some spotty showers, leftover once this morning. we are picking up light returns over san francisco, parts of daly city and also in san bruno. so we could see some light rain falling over that area. definitely more moderate rainfall over highway 1, south of monterey with the areas of yellow and orange. that's where we are getting a little bit morrow rainfall. and if you are heading up to tahoe, chains required. truckee also reporting light snow this morning, as well as south lake tahoe. roads a bit wet, as well. for today you can expect things to change this afternoon. it will be a nice one, actually. the temperatures are starting off in the upper 30s to upper 40s, we will see some sunny breaks with temperatures climbing into the low to mid-50s and this morning partly cloudy conditions return. temperatures dropping below 50 degrees. i'll have your complete accuweather forecast coming up shortly. carolyn. >> thank you, frances. breaking news this morning. the national hockey league and its players union have reached a

tentative agreement to end the lockout now more than 100 days long. according to espn, if this deal is approved, the league could still salvage a 48-game season. it would begin january 19th. league and union reps met face-to-face with the federal mediator in midtown, manhattan into the we hours this morning. they were ironing out pension and revenue issues. they were up against a friday deadline issued by the nhl commissioner that would have cancelled the season outright. once again, though, good news for sharks fans and downtown san jose businesses. the nhl and players union reached a tentative deal early this morning to end the lockout. it still has to be ratified. milbrae police are investigating the shooting of a teenager near the high school. a 16-year-old girl was shot late last night. kira klapper joins us live from

the scene. more details are starting to come in now. >> that's right. within just the last hour and a half the san mateo county sheriff's office confirmed with me that the victim is a 16-year-old girl. she's from south san francisco. fortunately she is in stable condition at the hospital right now. was shot last night in this relatively quiet milbrae neighborhood right across from the high school. let's get you to the video we have from the scene last night. this is at park boulevard and santater reece away. 911 calls came in around 10:30 last night. neighbors reported that shots had been fired. police were combing the area for more than an area searching for the shooter. authorities aren't tell us whether they have anyone in custody. initials reports are that the girl was shot in her abdomen and thigh. no confirmation from authorities on that. but again this morning the san mateo county sheriff's office is telling us a 16-year-old girl from south san francisco who was shot in

milbrae is currently in stable condition. reporting live in milbrae, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> good to hear she's going to be okay. thank you, kira. oakland police are investigating a shooting that left two people injured. police responded to 68th avenue and mcarthur believed at 5:30 yesterday afternoon after neighbors reported hearing gunshots gunshots a neighbor told abc7 news off-camera that a local cable technician ran to her for cover right after the shots were fired. >> comcast was here and he said it was gunshots can i come in and he came in and jumped on the floor. my kids was already on the floor. >> a short time later police responded to a car crash less than a mile away at edwards and near i-580. investigators believe that's where the victims crashed their car after being shot. two men in the car managed to

take themselves to the hospital. their injuries are not considered life-threatening. new this morning sonoma county sheriff's deputies are look for a hitchhiker they say stabbed a driver who gave him a lift last night near gurneville. the santa rosa press democrat reports the driver had a child in his car when he picked up that hitchhiker near the stump town brewery on river road, and it happened around 7:30 last night. now investigators are not sure why, but say the hitchhiker stabbed the driver twice before i was able to get him out of the car. the deputies say the suspect is known locally but only by a nickname which they are declining to release. vallejo police are offering a $10,000 reward to catch the driver of a car that hit and critically injured a pedestrian on christmas eve. the unidentified 54-year-old vallejo resident was crossing broadway street at hogan avenue when the accident occurred. the driver ran from the crash and an all-out search and underway. just three weeks after the sandy hook elementary massacre a

gun show was held not far from the city of newtown. there was pressure from newtown officials to not hold the show, but organizers say this is how they make a living. some gun shows an hour away from newtown cancelled or rescheduled. gun dealers everywhere report strong sales since the november election and especially since the sandy hook massacre. >> a piedmont man's ten-year-old daughter has motivated him to help get guns off the street. her reaction to the sandy hook tragedy prompted him to start his own cash for guns program.

she said the girl laughed, saying the safety was on, then 17 years later she said her brother was shot by his best friend. >> my brother was shot through the head so i never got to see him again, and i raised him and it was the most horrific experience of my entire life. ripped out my heart. >> tom said he wants to prevent what jordan experienced from happening to anyone. he has a ten-year old daughter who attends a school in piedmont. after the sandy hook shootings she told her dad what happened in class. >> she told me she was crying in school and she didn't know why. and i just put two and two together so i knew it was affecting her. >> he said he decided to start the kind of gun buy back program like the ones in san francisco and oakland last month. >> now she's calling this the gun drive and she's all behind it and is excited that we are collecting guns. it's really doing the job i wanted it to do, make her feel like we are doing something which i hope we are. >> piedmont isn't a high crime area but he's gotten attention because he's donated $1,000. he will pay $200 per gun surrendered. >> i think it's an incredibly generous offer. i think certainly, you know, we

have to think about the safety of our children. >> piedmont councilman jeff wheeler said the city has a voluntary gun collection program which has collected 37 weapons in the past five years. if the plan works out with the police and city officials, he says it should be adopted. >> we certainly don't want to have criminals breaking into homes and getting a hold of guns. that can happen. >> in piedmont, thomas ramone, abc7 news. >> tomorrow morning at 10:00 the 49ers divisional playoff tickets go on sale via ticket masters. niners will host the green bay packers at candlestick park next saturday night, january 12th at five. but the number of seats available is extremely limited so fans are encouraged to visit nfl ticket exchange to find additional seats. it is expected to be a sellout game. it is possible more seats could become available later due to returns. those tickets would only be made available through ticketmaster. up next, unhappy residents,

fans of a popular peninsula ice rink are rallying against a plan to close it. the ice center of san mateo is slated to close on june 1st. the landlord wants to transform the location at the bridge point shopping center into more retail space. but long-time fans of the rink are petitioning the landlord for a change of heart. i mean, it's where most of our skaters, they come here almost every day. their parents drop them off. they feel safe here and for most of our skaters they are sad. they aren't sure what they are going to do, what their coaches are going to do, where they will end up. >> that center has been open for the past 20 years. along with skating, it hosts hockey games for several peninsula hockey leagues. >> again, we were talking about the nhl lockout being over, apparently. with a deal reached so that is good news. also good news is our weather. we have a bit of a warming trend, frances. >> especially in this month. we are looking for those nice, dry breaks and warmer weather. we have one on the way this afternoon but we did see some

>> welcome back. it's 6:19." this is the ferry building glowing in the distance. according to a live doppler 7hd, a few raindrops are falling in san francisco and elsewhere. frances dinglasan is here with the full accuweather forecast, sitting in this morning for lisa argen. >> yes. we are seeing some of those showers still over parts of the bay area that we will continue to see this morning. we will take you outside to show you a live shot from sutro look towards san francisco and the bay and the east bay in the distance. we have some low clouds bringing us some precipitation over parts of the bay right now. next we will take you that live doppler 7hd to show you the storm that's moving southeast.

this is the last few hours. you see how the center of it is right now centered over monterey bay moving toward salinas. but as the rain continues to wrap around counter clockwise around the storm, we will see some light showers in the bay area. we will zoom in a little bit in san francisco so we saw some sprinkles earlier across the golden gate bridge, parts of the bay bridge and along 101 as well heading down toward san bruno. some light rainfall on third street and 280. so look out for that. not a lot of rainfall at this point. the areas of light blue, some of it might not even be making it to the ground all the way but we could see a few sprinkles. hayward reporting light rain as well. you will find it on 880, san mateo bridge, as well as castro valley. then as we check into livermore we also see some light showers being reported, 580, patterson pass road. the showers will continue

through the morning hours. just a spotty one here and there. but then it will be all gone for the rest of the day. temperatures right now in the 40s. 46 in san rafael, 48 oakland. so much milder start to the day. not as cool because of the cloud cover overnight. the showers continue through the morning. but by lunchtime this afternoon, more sunshine and then dry and warmer conditions monday and tuesday so we get a nice break once again from the rain. a chance of rain coming up later in the week. i'll show about the accuweather seven-day forecast. the storm is heading down toward southern california, taking the rain with it and that's why we are going to see some drier condition the. our forecast model still shows a few spotty showers. even at 8:00 this morning, possibly at nine and ten in the east bay. then some cloud cover in the afternoon and then by 3:00 we will even see some breaks in the clouds and some sunny conditions. 4:00 today.

we will have a nice day overall. a good day to do anything outdoors later on. santa rosa, the last 24 hours got over .3-inch as well as san rafael. oakland about a quarter of an inch. san francisco over .3. redwood city not even quite a tenth of an inch but bench loamen mountains almost an inch and santa cruz mountains. that's where we saw the highest rainfall totals. temperatures today mainly in the low to mid-50s. look for a high of 52 in san francisco. windy conditions along the coast. 54 in fremont. you will find some more low to mid-50s around monterey bay with 53 in emergency hill. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. once the morning showers are over, we will see some sunshine. temperatures in the 50s. mostly sunny tomorrow with warming heading our way into tuesday and then just a chance of showers wednesday night into thursday, but then looking dry again friday and saturday >> i like the sound of that, frances. >> i do too. >> thank you. coming up at 7:00 is good

effect today for drivers who fail to feed the meters on sundays getting warnings for now, then come the tickets. abc7 news reporter sergio has the details. high noon will mark the end of free parking on a sunday in san francisco. for the christian community, it's not a welcome change. >> so many people have left the city because it's such an expensive place to live and their only connection with the city is their congregations. >> he said sunday metered parking is another hurdle for members of some congregations. the end of what would otherwise be a free day in the city. he said he also has concerns about the way the decision was made by the san francisco mta. >> at the outset, it came to our knowledge after the fact that there was a stakeholders group that really put this and implemented this policy. it was not the voice of one member of the faith community around that table. so we see it as a real gross infraction of due process. >> paul rhoads, a spokesman,

said the safe community was a strong voice in the meetering process. because church services often start in the morning, the mta decided to limit when they will start charging. >> all of the meters won't start enforcing until noon and that will last until 6:00 and all the meters have a four hour time limit. no citations are issued for the next three sundays. instead enforcement officers will issue warnings. this is a program that will expected to bring in about $2 million a year, but the mta said it was all started because of complaints that some drivers take up some spaces all day long. >> so this is something that is really meant to ensure that parking is available for people who come into san francisco. this will make it easier for visitors to come into san francisco and find a parking space. >> up until now there's only been a handful of parking enforcement officers assigned to sunday duty and they usually only deal with parking complaints. but because of sunday metered parking now, they said they will likely have to assign more officers.

in san francisco, abc7 news. oakland police show off a new strategy for combating gun violence but do they have the manpower to make it work? abc7 news reporter mark matthews has the story from a neighborhood that has seen more than its share of shootouts. >> at 84th avenue and dowling this was the sound neighbors heard new year's eve. the sound of a gun fight reported by shot fired mike phones and transmitted with an exact location with transmission to patrol cars on the shot spotter response team. >> the particular case is an alert came in and less than 22 seconds. >> the quick response led to arrest of a man armed with an assault weapon loaded with 100 rounds of ammunition. >> goes to show given technology and the right amount of resources in the correct direction we can make a dent in violent crime. >> two hours after taking this gun off the streets, the shots spotter team arrested two more men armed with another assault rifle. that one night they had 200 shots spotter alerts within two hours.

>> if i had more people i think our chances of apprehending many of those would have been a lot higher. >> that's one of the big challenges facing the department. in 2010 oakland laid off more than 100 officers. new year's eve was the first time the shot spotter response team had been on the streets in six months. >> it's great having technology. but you have the technology and we don't have anybody to respond or respond correctly, we around -- are aren't going to catch the guy. >> oakland's mayor said she wants to build up the force but residents say the answer isn't just more police. >> i just think it's bigger than that. >> she said gun violence and crime in her neighborhood is a complex problem. >> it's going to take more than just police. more of like a rebuilding of oakland. >> we talk about more cooperation from the community with police, more police who know and understand the people who live in their patrol areas and more jobs as an alternative to gangs. jobs is what the mayor of oakland was talking about.

that was in a closed-door public safety meeting. she said she wants 100 officers a year graduating from the police academy and she wants those numbers sustained over the next five years. at police headquarters in oakland, mark matthews, abc7 news. plans are being made at oakland city hall to spend half a million dollars to hire ten almeda county sheriff's deputies plus a sergeant to help patrol the streets. this after they laid off oakland police officers to save money. today the san francisco chronicle reports the oakland police officers association objects to spending the money on outside help. the police union president said the money should instead be spent hiring more oakland police officers right now. new this morning a taxi cabdriver is hospitalized in stable condition after being stabbed by a patron outside the mcarthur bart station last night. police say the man got into a cab at a taxi stand outside the bart station on 40th street

just before 2:00. the two got into some sort of argument and that's when list say the man stabbed the driver, then ran off. the petaluma city council starts the new year tomorrow with a formal vote on a new anti-smoking ordinance. in december the council tentatively approved a ban on smoking in places including all hotel rooms, private apartments, condos, outdoor spaces, including balconies, court yards, bus stops and on commercial sidewalks. the tough new regulations are intended to protect people from the hazards of second-hand smoke. the santa rosa press democrat reports petaluma's ordinance slightly more ordinance than a sonoma county ban pass bid supervisors last year. now the san francisco's exploratorium is moving to a new location on the embarcadero. the city's recreation and parks department is look for a new

tenant for the old location in the marina district. the 80,000 square foot building at the palace of fine arts rented for $490,000 a year. it could take a year or two to take a suitable tenant with requests for proposals going out this spring. the san francisco chronicle reports the rec and park department wants to keep the theater in place but leader of the maybeck foundation will analyze potential new uses for the facility. coming up, the provocative bay area bus ad that is raising some eyebrows. what it has to do with the real meaning of the word jihad. also here is a look at live doppler 7hd. it appears the storm is heading out, though you can see from the green there that there is light rain in san francisco and elsewhere. frances dinglasan will have your forecast. she's tracking the

of this muni bus. it's part of an educational campaign created by c.a.r.e., the council on american islamic relations. the group has put 35ads on buses rolling through san francisco. >> the intention of the campaign is to educate our fellow americans about what the word jihad means. >> she is the executive director of c.a.r.e.'s bay area office. >> a common misconception of the word jihad is it means armed struggle or holy war. and that is something that has been perpetrated by many who have made careers out of pushing anti-islamic sentiment. >> i asked muni riders if they knew the definition of jihad. >> religious war. >> a holy war. >> webster defines it as a holy war, but there's a second definition that is more appropriate. >> the proper meaning, as many of us describe it, is to struggle and that's it. for many that is anything from building relationships with our neighbors to making it to work on time or doing better on their diets. >> it's a meaning many may not

you see the center of the storm moving south, southeast toward monterey bay but you still see the rain bands wrapping around it in a counter clockwise direction. that will continue to bring us showers through the morning hours. we saw some light rain falling over san francisco. right now over san mateo and near sfo. but i did check sfo, they aren't reporting any flight delays at this point. also over the oakland airport, that looks dry right now, but some light rain falling through san leandro and on 238. you will also find sprinkles in san jose over the airport, but no delays there. you will find lighter rain on north first street and just off 101 and also 880. so the showers will continue through the morning but by this afternoon we can pretty much say bye to them. here's a look at temperatures right now in the mid-to upper 40s. milder because of the cloud cover. 47 in san francisco. currently 48 in oakland and only 43 in antioch.

so we just have to deal with the morning showers. some light sprinkles. afternoon sunshine and a break from the rain. in fact, that break will last a few days because we have dry and warmer weather monday and tuesday. temperatures will climb up a bit more midweek. here's a look at the radar satellite image. so this storm heading south, bringing some rain toward southern california. then we have the area of high pressure. that's going to bring us the sunnier conditions and milder weather over the next few days. our forecast models still shows a chance of sprinkles even during the 8:00 hour. the areas of green and 9:00 hour. but notice by lunchtime it's pretty much all gone. then this afternoon we will see some breaks in the clouds. so sunshine and a nice day overall. so if you have outdoor abc news tests, you shouldn't have any problems this afternoon. rain totals for the most part were anywhere between a quarter and a half an inch. over .3-inch in san rafael and
