compared to the northeast where they are preparing for huge blizzard forecasted to hit the same areas slammed by super storm sandy last year. now a look at flurries falling in new york city right now. that will make traffic tough in the city. blizzard wantings took affect an hour and a half ago for new york city and parts of new jersey and long island, connecticut and massachusetts are also under a blizzard wanting. you can see very few people. know is expected to fall today and continue into the weekend with forecasters saying it is poised to dump selfibls -- several inches of snow an hour and by the time it is over 3 feet of snow could be on the ground. airlines cancel 3,200 flights including 30 flights from the bay area. we will go live to abc7 news reporter at sfo to see how it is impacting travel there today. >> tonight, a vigil is held for a 13-year-old girl found murdered in fairfield.

the girl's body was discovered friday morning at a park. the vigil will be held at the park at 6:30 tonight. fairfield police are asking for the public's help to find the killer. >> it will be a meaningful ceremony for 85 new highway patrol officers sworn in west sacramento dedicated in on of fallen bay area c.h.p. officer who was gunned down during a traffic stop last september on interstate 680. his family members will attend the ceremony and help pin badges on the new sworn officers. >> caltrain has determined the state bridges are safe. the sacramento bee reported a technician who tested the structural integrity on the bay bridge falsified tests on other projects. the report says that foundations

underpinning thousands of bridges and other structures across the state are safe. in the review caltrain says irregularities were limited in scope and rare. an independent review is expected some time in the next few months. >> google is hoping to have their own runway at the san jose airport to take off and land the corporate jet any time. there is a deal in the works to build a new facility on a parking lot on the west side of the airport. here is a rendition of what it would look like. mercury news reporting that the $82 million facility would be a private airport if google and other large corporate jets. the deal brings in a lot of money for the airport, more than $2.5 million a year u.n. in rent. >> the precipitation mike has been warning us about has been costly with a car rolled on the highway yesterday. >> i saw a car in 101 flipped on

expenses. >> a search of a shipping container at the port of oakland turned up thousands of rounds of ammunition. customs and border agents seized 2,300 rounds hidden in air filters in three cars from mongolia. it happened last month but authorities are only now revealing it. the ammunition and vehicles are worth $45,000. the vehicles belong to a bay area resident. authorities not releasing his name because no criminal charges have been filed. >> safety in san jose is a chief concern among residents and the mayor. he is hoping residents will agree to a tax increase to beef up a struggling police department. the mayor laid out the plan in the state of the city address. our news reporter has details. >> san jose's mayor was quick to set the tone for the state of the city address. >> i would love to tell you i am not talk about the budget. that would be a pleasant change but that is still our biggest challenge. >> there is a small surplus this

year it is still not enough to beef up the city's struggling police department. layoffs, low morale and pension reform have shrunk the department to under 1,000. >> my priority is public safety. >> the crime rate has gone up. last year there were 46 homicides, the highest in 20 years. the mayor promises to add 200 officers the next two years but the police officers union wants more. >> people are looking for san jose to pay a competitive wage for police officers. the market rate san jose pays is much less than any of the surrounding cities. >> to get it back on track, the mayor is suggesting up to half a sent sales tax. >> in 2014 we can explain to the public if they give us additional revenues we will restore services. >> until we get out of this situation we probably need the money. >> there was a small group of people not on board with the vision worried about crime.

rain on the bridge. showers have moved through the bridge and right now traffic is moving fine but be careful this morning because the shows are able to respond up during the morning hours. we will check with mike nicco for the forecast coming up. >> we are learning details of what could be a pricey grand opening celebration for the new bay bridge. a proposed labor day grand opening celebration includes plans to allow 125,000 people to walk across the bridge before the new span opens to traffic. that would cost more than $5.5 million for basics like transportation and security. a nonprofit group would have to raise the money. the idea is discussed at a public meeting next week. >> mineta san jose international airport will not see another dreamliner flight until at least the end of many. all boeing 787 dreamliner remain grounded from san jose to tokyo. boeing wanted to test new flights of the troubled boeing 787 dreamliner after a

successful landing in seattle yesterday. the national transportation safety board found a short circuit in a cell in the battery at thest of the problem. officials are still unable to say what caused the short circuit. any are reviewing the design of the battery. >> an unusual auction is helping raise money for the san francisco spca. two employees are getting inked for charity. they have lots of tattoos but the next are up for auction on e-bay. the winning bidder decides what the tattoo is. bidding ends today at noon and they get the tattoos tonight at an adoption festival. it will benefit the spca, the bids are $205 each. >> that is not a kaepernick tattoo but a cater nic. >> very nicely done. >> very nice.

obnoxious the better, it alerts other neighbors. that is what happened. >> the best ways to protect your him is to get to know your neighbors and keep an eye out. >> muni will have throughs of passengers riding for free revealing 18,000 students is signed up for program giving free muni passes to low income youth. most are from the san francisco unified school district. students have to be eligible for subsidiesed lunch programs. applications are processed. the program begins march 1. >> new research suggests increasing the price of alcohol could help lives. alcohol-related deaths were studyied in british columbia and 10 percent high in the minimum price of booze was followed up by a 32 percent drop in the death rate. researchers concluded that making alcohol more expensive caused heavy drinkers to drink less. the study results are published
