they have no running water. >> reporter: while emergency generators are providing some electricity, the ship has no propulsion. now, basically, a 100,000 ton cork. carnival has said no one is hurt and there is plenty of food. but has urged guests to congregate in common areas and on the decks. a tugboat has been dispatched to ship to tow the 900-foot boat back to land in case its engineers can't fix the problem. matt gutman, abc news, miami. >> we'll have the latest on the fate of the "triumph" later on. on "gma." but we move on now to another story. wild weather ripping through six states from texas to alabama. >> those severe storms triggered as many as 15 tornadoes, including an especially destructive one near hattiesburg, mississippi. the ominous twister was captured on cell phone video as it descended on the town, as well

as the university of southern mississippi. >> it touched down around 6:00 in the evening. it damaged hundreds of homes and ripped the roof off a building on campus. many trees were snapped in half and scattered around the streets. more than a dozen people were injured. but good news here. no reports of any fatalities. and hundreds of miles to the north, drivers across the upper midwest are facing a treacherous morning commute after getting clobbered by a foot of snow and freezing rain. hundreds of cars crashed on slick highways yesterday. blowing snow created near-whiteout conditions in duluth. and several cities declared know emergencies, including minneapolis and st. paul. also snowplows and shovels are still working nonstop this morning to clean up from that monster blizzard that pummeled the northeast over the weekend. >> hamden, connecticut, is buried under 40 inches of snow. take a look at this incredible photo from nearby trumbull, what one woman saw as she opened her front door. abc's tahman bradley has the

latest. >> reporter: this morning, cleanup continues across the northeast. it will take days to recover from this massive blizzard. >> it's horrible. when you do shovel your driveway, the plows come and put the snow back on to the driveway. >> reporter: utility crews are working around the clock to restore power to those left in the cold and dark. >> we have no power, no heat, no electricity, no nothing. >> reporter: clearing snow-filled roads has been a difficult task. an army of plows worked on the long island expressway. one of new york's busiest. at the height of the storm, some drivers had to abandon their cars. others spent the night on the roadway. >> i got through the night starting the car every 40 minutes, getting some heat. >> reporter: driving bans put in place across the region during the storm have been lifted. for many, it doesn't matter. snow has buried cars. >> what i'm going through at this moment is like hell. i work in a nursing home in brooklyn. i had to tell them i cannot come in to work. the snow is high like a

mountain. >> reporter: in boston, school is closed today. >> we opened several community centers for kids to go to and parents, if they want, free of charge. >> reporter: northeast airports are operating close to normal schedules. over 5,000 flights were canceled at the height of the storm. this monster blizzard, that brought some of the highest accumulations ever recorded, is blamed for at least 15 deaths in the northeast and canada. the governor of massachusetts says it could have been so much worse. >> considering the severity of the storm, the amount of snow and the wind, we have come through this pretty well. >> reporter: today's forecast calls for warmer temperatures and rain. but there's a new worry. some roofs, already filled with snow, may not be able to withstand the extra weight. tahman bradley, abc news. >> what a tough weekend for so many folks in this part of the country. let's take a look now at today's forecast. the rain that tahman mentioned stretches all the way to the carolinas. also, some freezing rain in new england. blustery with leftover snow in minnesota and michigan. thunderstorms from houston to georgia. evening snow from the rockies to the texas panhandle.
