the murders of two seasoned detectives. cornell bernard is live in santa cruz. >> the city is a city in mourning today following the death of two police officers killed in the line of duty. when they came to a home here on north branciforte avenue, a suspect opened fire on them. investigators are still combing every single inch of this crime scene looking for evidence. the police community continues to mourn their death a memorial has begun at police headquarters for detective sergeant baker and his colleague, detective his bet butler. the officers responded to a home and were met with gun officer. they were killed. a half hour later, the suspect

was spotted and chased by police. >> a chase ensued. gunfire was exchanged between goulet and a team of sheriff deputies and santa cruz police officers. the suspect was killed at the scene. >> right now it is a time to connect and support one other and listening and talking trying to set a tone for the next few days and weeks. >> the police chaplains comforting the families who are grieving, schools were put on lockdown for a short time following the shooting and the pursuit of the suspect. terrified parents waited for word about their kids. schools were opened and parents finally allowed to pick their kids up. live at the scene, the search continues if more evidence here

on north branciforte avenue where the detectives lost their lives. they are using a hook-and-ladder to light the scene and map the crime scene of exactly the details of how everything went down. it is unclear why the officers came to this home yesterday. they had business apparently with mr. goulet and we will learn more at a news conference at 11:30 at police headquarters in santa cruz. >> we are learning more about the two officers killed and the gunman's troubled past. katie marzullo? >> both officers were veterans of the police department and both leave behind families. the police chief says the department has lost two exceptionally fine officers, sergeant loran "butch" baker was with the department 28 years. detective elizabeth butler, 10

years. >> assigned to investigations. she leaves behind her partner, peter, and her two young boys. he was a long time friend of mine, a mentor, and he leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son who actually works for my department as a community service officer. >> the suspected killer is 35-year-old goulet with a history of troubles with the law and convicted in peeping tom cases in portland, oregon, in 2008. he was carrying a gun that went off with a struggle with the woman's girlfriend. he was sentenced to probation but was sent back to jail after peeping in windows during a visit with a probation officer. he was working as a coffee maker and on friday he broke into could worker's home and made

near 36th avenue and -- rather, 86th avenue and olive street. the suspects hopped from the car and took off running and the was still rolling when the police had their guns drawn. >> all is well after a vallejo city council meeting was taken over by protesters. the protesters were about 50 and arrived inside the city council chambers after the 6:00 meeting and council meetings went in a back room as they took over the sound system. they were protesting ten officer-involved shootings that happened in vallejo last year and alleged police brutality. police and the sheriff deputies were able to get the protesters move outside and keep them from re-entering. the meeting resume. no one was arrested. >> at vatican city huge crowds are leaving st. support's square after the pope benedict

>> good morning, at 5:00. happening right now in san francisco, residents are trying to figure out how much damage the homes and cars suffered in a huge water main break. that is our breaking news to start this half hour. amy hollyfield is live near 15th avenue with the latest. >> look behind me. the water has receded. you do not see the huge pool of

water but now you can see muck, lots of mud and debris. we are trying to figure out what the junk is. first we were told the sewer system backed up and that was possibly raw sewage and not something you wanted to walk around in. now they are saying they don't think it is raw sewage but it is a mess. look at the video from earlier. it was a big flood out here flooding streets, cars, and homes. authorities estimate about 12 homes plodded. this was at 3:00 this morning. officials say a 16" water main broke. the sewer system backed up. it created a huge mess. >> the house is under 2' or 3' of water and we are grabbing anything we can. we just moved in two weeks away so all of the boxes were on the ground. unbelievable. terrible.
