fire may have sparked this blaze few miles away. trailer parked in the backs of a house. resident using garden hose on the flame before the crew arrived. it was contained in half hour. >> now to developing news out of santa cruz. we are learning more about what led up to the shooting that killed 2 santa cruz police officers on tuesday. team coverage tonigh tonight. lillian has new details on the shooter but we begin with lisa live in santa cruz. >> people have been coming by here all night dropping off flowers, notes, lighting candles and with each day in the community learns more about what happened between these 2 officers and jeremy goulet. >> neither officer was wearing body armor at the time of the incident. however body arm or wouldn't have helped. >> santa cruz county sheriff gave a minute to minute account

of what happened tuesday. when sergeant baker and detective butler tracked jeremy goulet down inside his home. 3 spoke through a closed screen door for about 10 minutes. >> goulet disappeared from the door and appeared from another location and ambushed or assaulted the officers. >>reporter: goulet shot the officers with his own.45 caliber handgun. it happened so fast baker and butler didn't even have time to run. one of goulet bullet traveled fifth of a mile away. hitting a woman who had just parked her car on stanford avenue. >> is he saw an object in the air and hit her in her hip. didn't break the skin. didn't go through the clothing. >>reporter: woman was about to be interviewed by melissa as babysitter when the bullet swept across the sky. i'm glad it was far enough to not cause any injuries. >> but back on this avenue, police were making their move. goulet took off with guns and

car belonging to baker and butler. he even put on sergeant baker body arm or. for some reason goulet drove around the block and tried to return home. roads were closed off. he got out in this alley off doyle where the gun battle erupted. and goulet killed. this santa cruz fire truck responded ended up saving lives by shielding residents from flying bullet. >> and tomorrow this police department will reopen. officers will start hitting the streets at 7:00 a.m. since tuesday the sheriffs kept and chp has taken over patrolling duties in the city so these officers in this department can mourn. live in santa cruz tonight, lisa, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. more details with are emerging about the cop killer past and criminal history. what we found out about jeremy goulet is more serious than what we heard about him to date. the lillian is in the newsroom now

with the very latest on this story. lillian. >>reporter: jeremy goulet convicted of only misdemeanor in san diego, portland and berkeley but we also learn he also faced 2 separate rape charges. jeremy goulet history of sexual assault goes beyond peeping tom type misdemeanor. he faced 2 rape charges while in the army in 2006. which could have put him away for life. we spoke to the defense attorney who represented him. he says the first alleged rape happened after party just days after goulet arrival at the wheeler army airfield in hop loo-loo. >> one of the women at the party retired for the evening and went back into her home locked all of the doors and mr. goulet was accused of crawling if through the bathroom window and raping her. >>reporter: second alleged rape hanl hand happened only few months later assigned to watch over barrack. he allegedly raped another female officer after she came home

from a party while he was on shift. despite the seriousness of both cases goulet plea bargain less than honorable discharge. >> i can say there was identification issues in the first case and the second case there was credibility issues. the girl the young woman was extremely drunk. >>reporter: all of these revelation are being reviewed by investigators who say they determined yet another alarming case involving goulet. >> goulet is the suspect in an inappropriate touching of juvenile woman or juvenile child female and we are following up in that investigation as well. >> goulet defense attorney said he was shocked when he learned a that his former client shot and killed 2 santa cruz police officers. he described goulet as calm nice guy. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. memorial for the 2 officers will take place at the kaiser permanente arena in santa cruz thursday at 11:00 a.m. overflow seating will be
