the memorial we have been showing you has grown by leaps and bounds. people are still bringing flowers and notes and candles to honor loran butch baker and elizabeth butler murder on tuesday by goulet. beside misdemeanor convictions in the area he faced two rape charges in the army in 2006 which could have put him away for life. we spoke with the defense attorney who represented him. the first alleged rape happened after a party after his arrival at the army airfield in honolulu, hawaii. >> the women retired for the evening and went to her home locked the doors and he was accused of crawling in through the bathroom window and raping the woman.

>> the second alleged rape was a few months later. despite the seriousness of both charges he plea bargained a less than onable discharge. we learned more chilling details about what led up to the shooting. the detective spoke to goulet through a screen and he ambushed the officers by coming out a side door. they did not have time to run or to react. he took off with their guns and body armor and stole their car. he was shot dead by police. we learn that police officers will return to work by 8:00 this morning. we are live in santa cruz this morning. >> the memorial for the two officers will take place at the kaiser permanente arena in santa cruz on thursday at 11 a.m. with overflow seating veil at the auditorium. the scholarship fund has been

set up with a link at abc7news.com under "see it on tv." >> vallejo police are looking for information on the third homicide of the career after a deadly stabbing between two men who knew each other. one was found dead and identified as 27-year-old christopher armstrong. a 36-year-old james alexander is in custody and will likely face murder charges. police were led to alexander who was arrested a few blocks away and treated for injuries, as well. >> the fugitive wanted for a drive by shooting death in las vegas is in custody. 26-year-old ammar harris was arrested yesterday in los angeles. harris fired five shots into a mazurati killing cherry. the rapper's car slammed into a taxi killing two people inside. harris is waiting for extradition to nevada.

>> two teens are recovering in oakland after being shot hours from each other. the latest shooting happened around 8:00 last night. our media partner reports the teen is in critical but stable condition. a 17-year-old student jogging near fremont high school was shot not leg but will be okay. the principal says counselors will talk to students about coping with violence in the community. no arrests in either shooting so far. >> the oakland first friday art festival starts with changes after the deadly shooting of a high school senior. businesses and organizers are discussing ways to improve safety. the event starts at 5:00 and ends at 9:00, an hour earlier. extra police and private security will be on patrol. the size of the venue has been reduced from a dozen blocks to

five blocks. performances are focused around "healing." >> the fremont police department has announced plans for a gun buyback program march 16. a donation by a private citizen allows them to host the buy back for residents and will be held at the fremont fire training facility on stevenson boulevard. the money to be offered was not provided and the police department will release more information about the event next week. >> new details about the latest person charged in the murder of a millionaire. our media partner, the "san jose mercury news" reports a 33 year oat katrina fritz was a main girl among a string of prostitutes. documents show that the cell phone records show she and her brother were in contact with each other during the home invasion that ended with the death of the entrepreneurial.

fritz and her brother and three others face murder charges in his death. >> a woman hit by a muni bus in san francisco is recovering from life-threatening injuries. the accident happened yesterday afternoon around 3:00 near 19th avenue. a spokesman said the woman, in her 20's, was in the right-of-way of the light rail train and no one else was hurt. >> sheriff deputies and dogs will search a union city creek for more clues after the discovery of a human skull. a teenager playing in the creek found the bones. officials say the skull is not native american because it has fillings. if more bones are found officials could consider a full excavation. >> it is exciting morning for students at three high schools who will watch their science experiments be launched into space. the space rocket will launch at 7:10 pacific time. there are experiments from san jose's valley christian high school and fremont christian high school and los gatos high school.

same-sex marriage. president obama threw his administration's weight behind the argument to overturn the ban. in a friend of the court brief the president urged the nine justices on the supreme court to declare the ban unconstitutional because in his words "it violates the equal protection clause in the constitution." clint eastwood has reaffirmed his support of same-sex marriage , signing the legal brief asking the supreme court to dissolve prop 8. >> the army soldier behind the biggest leak of classified materials in united states history has pleaded guilty to charges that could put him in jail if two decades, reading a 35 page statement in court yesterday explaining why he leaked diplomatic cables to wikileaks. the 25-year-old wanted the world to know how the american military was fighting the wars in iraq and afghanistan with little regard for human life. he hoped to trigger debate about

we talked about and will spill in the bay. it has not made it to the east bay valleys. the winds are not strong enough on shore for that. >> live doppler 7 hd shows how dry it is with no rain falling from the fog. just a little bit of mist. it is dry outside. look how far north the storm track is well into canada but that is a temporary reprieve. some of the fog at the golden gate bridge shows san francisco at 50 degrees and 47 in san bruno and half moon bay. 46 in san mateo. redwood city and palo alto are at 49 degrees. from the east bay hills to the west, oakland at 49, walnut creek at 45 and richmond at 47 and antioch a warm spot at 50 and union city, dress for 46 degrees. south bay, looking at...87. 48 degrees and mountain view has

the thicker fog and morgan hill at 46 and gilroy at 42 and from mount tamalpais, it is clear. but further up 101 to novato we get fog. 39 in petaluma, a cooler spot. sausalito is at 45. today, we will get rid of the fog and hit the mid-to-upper 70's. cupertino, though, is 72. 66 in millbrae and everyone else in the low-to-mid 70's. on the coast the clouds will open up and mid-to-upper 60's downtown and south san francisco. through the north bay throw -- low-to-mid 70's. tonight, temperatures are mild again. mid-to-upper 40's inland and upper 40's to low 50's around the bay. if you are headed to the bench we have dangerous sneaker waves

possible so try to stay back from the water's edge and the outcroppings and the jetty. you can see the storm track to the north will hold out one more day but tomorrow evening starting around 7:00 we have a chance of sprinkles hanging around through midnight. beyond that, sunday is cooler. monday is cooler. 10- to 15-degrees cooler. tuesday there is a chance of rain but the best chance is wednesday and thursday and highs are back in the 50's. >> sue is off today so kristen and i will do the traffic now. a look shows highway 92 on the hayward side there is an early accident causing slow downs. watch out for that. the toll plaza at the bay bridge you can see the traffic is moving with no backup to report.

golden gate bridge shot shows there is fog out there. be aware of that coming into san francisco. otherwise, you can see how foggy it is and murky as the traffic heads into san francisco but, otherwise, it is friday lite. >> starting today, great white sharks are getting extra protection off the california coast. state fish and wildlife officials consider them a candidate as endangered species. anyone who catches a white spark without a permit, fishermen accidentally, could face penalties like fines and criminal charges. >> if you like to catch and eat shell fish from along the marin county coast the health kept is wanting you to stop for now. officials say clams and scallops could have dangerous levels of a toxin that can cause death.

livermore, no fog during the morning commute. now, what will happen this afternoon, fog is gone by 10:00. mid-60's to mid-70's around the bay and 66 to 73 and low-to-upper 70's inland and sunshine develops at the coast up like yesterday, low-to-mid 60's. now we have traffic. >> sue is off today but we have a quick look at the drive times in the bay area. so far mostly good, 92 at the san mateo bridge westbound 17 minutes that could be a bit slow because there was an accident earlier with a car and a truck but looking better and 680 highway 242 looking good. we will check out the golden gate bridge with fog that mike nicco was talking about and visibility issues along the 101 corridor into marin county and we have reports so perhaps take it slower and turn on the
