this morning police are hoping this woman may have some answers about the killer abc7 news has the latest. >> a steady stream of people continue to pilgrimage to the front steps of the santa cruz police department. >> it shows a lot of community support. a lot of people are really -- we are affected by this. >> the show of support has been overwhelming. a planned public memorial service next thursday was to be held at kaiser permanente arena with overflow crowds at the auditorium but both venues were deemed too small so it will be at hp pavilion in has been hose. >> i think the fact it is so big that it had to be moved is awesome. i think it shows the kind of support that this community is able to give to each other, and i wish it was in santa cruz. >> tonight santa cruz officers are back on patrol. the day shift counterpart took over from the highway patrol and the sheriff's department.

they took on police services for a few days. some welcomed the return to service. >> the citizens here have been so supportive that it's nice to get back and serve them again. it's been a rough couple days but we were all antsy to get back. >> investigators are still piecing together the events that led to jeremy opening fire on the two detectives. the sheriff's department is now looking for theresa johnson. investigators say she is not a suspect burks they want to talk to her because she may have associated with goulet in the last few weeks. investigators say theresa johnson may also go by theresa lamb. they believe she is homeless and they are hoping anyone that noise her will have her contact the santa cruz sheriff's department. abc news. >> the memorial for the detect he have butler and detective baker will be held thursday at noon at hp pavilion in san jose. also a scholarship fund has been

department staff forced to take one day furlough every week. >> but for all it's not bad news. it will not delay tax refunds, in fact, it may mean fewer audits. abc news, new york. >> we are learning more about the marin county man who was shot and killed by police in sonoma county. police say he had been smoking marijuana with a woman all night before he kidnapped her. officers shot the 27-year-old man after he crashed his car during a police chase in gurnville. this picture is from his facebook page. his car was towed away yesterday. thursday night a woman in the car began texting a friend saying she was kidnapped and asking the friend to call police. the victim claim he began acting strangely after they smoked. this morning santa clara county is planning for what they hope to be the bay area's biggest gun buyback event.

so many turned out at this event in marin county, authorities ran out of cash. today's event will be held from ten to two in the santa clara county fairgrounds in san jose. they will pay up to $100 for each shotgun, handgun and rifle and $200 for assault weapons. it was a much different evening in oakland. the evening art festival has been scaled back after a teenager was killed last month's he event. abc7 news reporter allen wong gives it a second look. >> suzie guerin decided to leave oakland's first friday event early because she said it's no longer the art scene it used. be. >> in the last few months i haven't been coming because it's been morph a party scene. it got to the point it was so crowded you couldn't walk joan -- anymore.

is too unstable for them to recover a man who fell into it after the sinkhole opened up thursday night. the victim, jeff bush, is now presumed dead. his brother tried to save him. >> we heard a loud crash. i ran in there. i heard somebody screaming, my brother screaming, and i ran in there and all you could see was this big hole and all i could see was the top of his bed. >> as i told the family earlier, the only thing that would be worse than what they are feeling now for their loss would be to experience additional human loss. >> engineers worry the sinkhole will grow and consume more of the house that teeters on top of it. 115 catholic cardinals gather in rome on monday to choose a date for picking the next pope. they were officially summoned by the vatican yesterday. once together, they will decide the actual start of the conclave

criminal charges against county supervisor george shirakawa jr. >> four felony counts of perjury, one felony count of misappropriating public money, and seven misdemeanors for failing to file accurate campaign reports. >> investigators say shirakawa used taxpayer and campaign donation money as his own and some of it went to support his gambling addiction which shirakawa admitted to when he resigned in response to the charges. he said he also suffers from depression and he apologizes for his actions. >> this is an extraordinary situation and it called for extraordinary measures and right now the extraordinary measures is that he's resigning. >> the san jose residents we spoke to say it was the right move. >> i think it is the right thing. there's a lot of controversy missappropriation of funds and campaign funds. it was like the icing on the cake.

cooler especially in sports near or coast. and with the wind shift we are really going to cool down dramatically as we begin the work week. 48 in livermore. it's 50 in fremont. 46 santa rosa. and up towards petaluma where the little kids are getting ready to play, in the low 40s. should be a nice afternoon with the 60s on the way for the late afternoon. so here's a look at your forecast. fair and mild this morning. so we have the cloud cover out there. that's what is keeping the temperatures up. we will call it mostly cloudy today and chance of light showers headed our way through the overnight hours and in particular on sunday. so very mild this morning. much milder than yesterday. we had the fog in spots and temperatures have been cool all week long. but right now we are five to seven degrees milder from santa rosa to livermore. a little cooler at our coast. a large swells off the coast with breaks and high waves anywhere from five to eight feet, allowing for dangerous sneaker waves from the north

coast, the peninsula and all the way down to the monterey bay right on through the evening hours. higher clouds are entering the sky, and that is due to a shift in the jet stream and a ridge of high pressure that will eventually slide to the east. so that's the big picture. we still have high pressure in control and that will allow for another dry day today. but eventually a little piece of energy will head our way, and that will allow for the ridge to really give way and allow for more significant system come tuesday. but today it's just thicken clouds out there and the computer animation shows that throughout the rest of the day today. but into tomorrow you will notice a little built of green showing up here. that should bring maybe a light shower and certainly the numbers continuing to trend downward. 71 in sacramento today with 80 in fresno. 83 in los angeles. so not much cooling there. upper 60s from san mateo, palo alto. 68 in the north bay. here's the look ahead. you notice much cooler weather

it's a good morning to be a baseball fan. it's little league opening day n petaluma that means a special ceremony featuring the team that made it all the way to the little league world series. abc7 news reporter kira klapper is live in petaluma with the excitement. good morning, kira. >> good morning. a lot of excitement and as you and lisa were talking about, all of this -- the sun was so beautiful a moment ago behind me, an orange sky. a great morning for some baseball, as you were sag. the petaluma national little league team is ranked third in the world. they are first in the hearts of their fans and that's why they will be honored this morning before opening day officially kicks off. they will be honored and then they will turn around and present their western regional championship banner to the league. they are ranked third in the world, but second in the country. pretty impressive. they came within one game of winning it all at the little league world series in august. they got a massive parade upon

anticipate less money next year. >> more layoffs than there certainly would have been because of the sequestration issue. we are going to see an uptick in the number of layoffs we see on march 1th as a result of congress' action. -- or inaction. >> the effect of the cuts won't be felt until april. this morning the president is calling on congress to take action to hault the cuts. in his weekly address the president said not everyone is going to feel the impacts of the cuts right away so there is still time for congress to take action. the president said both sides just need to compromise. >> none of this is necessary. it's happening because republicans in congress chose this outcome over closing a single wasteful tax loophole that helps reduce the deficit. this week they decided protecting special interest tax breaks for the well-off and well-connected is more important than broking our military and

middle class families electric these cuts. >> washington state congresswoman said the house sent alternatives to the cincinnati, but senators never acted on them. she said the gop has shown the choices can be made in a responsible, thoughtful way. >> new this morning, 30 low income people will receive free procedures at the kaiser permanente. it is an event to help the uninsured. patients have been referred by various bay area medical clinics and they will get free procedures, such as hernia repairs, cataract removal and colonoscopies. the doctors and nurse donate their time and they are making operating rooms available at no charge. a commercial spaceflight carrying cargo from the bay area is back on track after a less than perfect lunch.

the privately-owned space x rocket lifted off at cape canaveral yesterday morning but when the unmanned capsule dragon separated from it, three of the four thrusters failed to fire. it took hours to regain control and the rendezvous with the space station has been delayed until early tomorrow morning. jonathan bloom tells us more about the payload and the bay area students watching its mission. >> two, one! >> as the second space x mission rumbled into orbit, these high school students watched intently because something of theirs is on board. >> this experiement is made to test the microgravity of the space station. >> building a little box like this one has consumed the past five months for these students at fremont christian school. >> this is a lot of effort put in with lunches and after school weekends and a lot of our lives have been -- our high school lives have been put into this project. >> in the tiny enclosure, a tiny measuring device they designed

with the help of their mentor. we are going to verify the gravity on the space station, what we are told it is, that it is 1 millionth of what it is on earth. >> that microgravity is the key to other experiments being sent to the space station by n.a.s.a.. the tiny dots are seeds. >> this is an opportunity to look how plants grow in space without earth's gravity. >> it's a step toward growing food on long space missions, and something else. plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. therefore, they could be useful as a part of an air revitalization system for long-term space travel. >> these are the space equivalent of petri dishes and test tubes to move liquids around. >> you don't have the gravity to hold things down. >> it's a way the astronauts could do medical experiments.

would you trust the results of a one dollar pregnancy test? there are expensive brands now available at discount stores and online. how reliable are they? experts is say it depends on a number of factors. abc7 news health and science reporter carolyn johnson has the details. >> tracy remembers the tense and exciting months leading up to her first pregnancy and tests she regularly used to test her condition. >> if i thought about it, i would hope i was pregnant and i could get one and it could be up to five a week. >> they cost $10 to $15, but they can be cheaper. as low as a dollar for some brands sold at discount stores like dollar tree and dollar general. many see them as a bargain. >> i feel like it's the same thing and it's actually, you know, much more affordable. >> but are the tests reliable? this doctor is an obstetrician at california pacific medical

center in san francisco. she said it first helps to understand how the test works. it looks for a hormone called hgb. it is produced during pregnancy. >> the difference between test is some have an ability to pick up a lower level of this hbg than other tests. >> she said the sensitivity comes into play in the earliest stages of the pregnancy before the fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. that process is accompanied by the release of hgt, which tests project with varying degrees of sensitivity. >> none of them over the counter will pick up a level of one or two. unlike other tests that can pick up a minute level. >> but there are difference. top of the line at home test can pick up a reading as low as 5.5 measured in international units. other premium brands pick up 20 units, and all the tests are designed to detect a minimum of 50 units. since the levels hipcally double

53 downtown and 50s in san jose. we are looking here over towards our east bay with numbers in the mid-40s for fare field, 48 livermore and 50 in fremont. so you see the clouds out there. that will bring numbers down a little bit today. still going to be mild. we still have high pressure in control but it's beginning to give way and slide to the east of us. overall we call it fair and mild this morning with more clouds for a mostly cloudy afternoon. some filtered sunshine in the south bay so those areas will a little bit more sun will climb through the 60s to about 70 today. a chance of showers headed our way. just a slight chance overnight into tomorrow. we are mild. we talk about that this morning. anywhere from two to five degrees warmer than we were yesterday. we had plenty of fog out there. and we are looking at that beach hazard throughout the day today, right on through the evening hours with those high energy swells and wave breaks, anywhere from five to eight foot waves from monterey along the

peninsula and the north coast today. definitely be careful. right into the evening the waves will ten to dial back but it's really because it's so powerful them aren't so high, just very, very powerful out there. so the satellite composite just the higher clouds pushing up through much of california but notice still lots of sunshine. temperatures in the 80s in southern california, and we broke a record overnight with lake tahoe in the mid-50s for very warm conditions there. in fact, that was a high temperature record yesterday. 56 degrees at south lake. high pressure still in command, but it is slowly sliding to the east. this weak frontal band will allow for the ridge to continue to break down and bring us the cloud cover today. our forecast animation shows more clouds around right on through the evening hours, but the rain now really looks like the sacramento valley, down through parts of the central coast, but throughout the day on sunday we will so a better chance of showers. more clouds around, a few

>> arnold schwarzenegger getting back to body building. he's reclaimed his title of group executive editor of "muscle and fitness flex" magazine. it's a job he used to have, but he resigned in 2005 under pressure that, as governor, the position was a conflict of interest. critics said he profited from ads for dietary supplements while considering legislation to keep kids from using them. back then the magazine was paying schwarzenegger $1 million a year. there's another chance to share in the glory of the world championship san francisco giants. the world championship trophy tour visits livermore today at the robert livermore community center from 11:00 this morning until 1:00 in the afternoon.
