[shooting] >> you can hear more than a dozen gunshots a police spokesman said officers had reason to believe their suspect was dangerous. >> they get out of their cars, they are dealing with what they believe to be an armed suspect. they draw their firearms and gave commands. at that point he displayed some type of threatening behavior toward the officers. >> this started at low speed and then sped up and ended miles away near blossom and calaroe. witnesses said they saw it as it ended and saw dangerous speeds on highway 85. >> this guy comes up on the shoulder on the left side, zombie us and then cuts across, cuts us off and a friend that was with us on a bike. >> during the chase police say the suspect threw several items out of the car. >> to the point we actually had a couple of citizens approach officers with items that were discarded from the suspect vehicle saying he threw this out of the car. >> one of the officers saw the suspect pull a weapon during the

pursuit but they have not recovered one at the shooting scene. as the chase ended police cars swarmed the neighborhood. witnesses say the suspect car was going slow before it finally stopped. >> there was no stopping him. it took 23 cop cars to, you know, just even like subdue the guy. >> san jose police are still trying to recover all the items that were tossed out of the car by the driver during the chase, including a possible weapon. if anyone happens to come across any of those item, they are urged to call san jose police so they can collect them as evidence. in san jose, abc7 news. >> new this morning fire crews in campbell of work to go clean up a big mess caused by a small fire that broke out last night inside our residential high-rise for seniors. no one was injured, but some residents are being helped by the red cross because their homes are damaged. the fire was minor, contained just one 12th-floor apartment. it set off of the sprinkler

system that quickly put out the flames but the water drained all the way down through all twelve floors directly below. firefighters had to go floor by floor checking the damage. >> trying to ascertain how many of the units are damaged to the point that the occupants are displaced. most people are obviously going to be fine. >> those seniors fortunate enough to be allowed to go back home had to climb the stairs because the fire left elevators out of service. >> mental health counselors say the santa cruz community will benefit from intervention to cope with last week's tragedy. as you know, detective sergeant loran "butch: baker and elizabeth butler were shot and killed last tuesday. one said the community is so small many people were just one or two degrees of separation from the victims. a touching gift was found at the memorial. someone left their purpose he will heart, a note left with the medal reads in part the purple heart is for the sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty. now on the other end of the

spectrum this man was arrested for stealing flowers from the memorial. 53-year-old kenneth moffet has been charged with vandalism and public intoxication. a memorial for detective butler and detective sergeant baker will be held thursday at noon at hp pavilion in san jose. it had to be moved from santa cruz to san jose to accommodate the expected large crowd. a mid-air emergency had rescue crews scrambling at san francisco international airport yesterday. sky 7hd shows united flight 378 after it made a save landing but had to be towed to the arrival gate. the pilot report add problem with the hydraulic system after the plane took off from vancouver. although the landing went smoothly, sfo crews were well prepared. >> it was a declared emergency so we did have all the emergency equipment out on the air field to meet the craft. >> the plane had 107 passengers

and ten crewmembers aboard. the flight was about an hour late on arrival but that was due to a late departure from vancouver. the unmanned space x dragon spacecraft has just arrived at the international space station to dock, delivering a ton of supplies, including experiments designed by some south bay high school students. this is a life look from n.a.s.a. tv. the privately-owned rocket arrived a day later than planned. right now it is preparing to dock. that is great news for students at fremont christian school who spent five months designing experiments to see how microgravity affects plant growth. the spacecraft almost didn't make it there at all. shortly after lift off the second stage thrusters failed to work. it took southern california flight controllers several hours to regain control and continue the mission. the dragon will return to experiments, samples in april. space x is a private company

headed by elan musq, the fonder of pay paul. in florida officials will demolish the house near tampa where a man was swallowed by a sink hole. efforts ended to try to find his body. because the area is so unstable they deemed it too risky. abc news reporter chuck sievertson has the details. >> we feel we have done everything we can. >> authorities are no longer looking for the body of jeff bush who was swallowed by a sinkhole as he slept in his bedroom thursday night. >> at this point it's not able to recover the body. >> they will demolish the house because of fierce it will cave in at any moment. >> i don't think there's any hope. they say the hole keeps getting better and i don't think they will be able to find him. >> the hole is growing. grounds around it so unstable equipment being brought in will be kept on the perimeter. this part of florida is dubbed

sinkhole alley. take a look how many have been recorded in the last six decades and 40% of the country is prone to sink holes. the water dissolves the limestone underground and the surface stays intact until it collapses. usually there are cracks or structural problems or something to indicate the sinkhole is forming, but not this one. >> the problem with this one is it was entirely within the building, at least initially, and below slabs so it was hidden until it became catastrophic. >> hows next to the bush home are at risk so officials gave families just a half-hour to go inside and gather their belongings, not knowing if or when they will be allowed back in again. a memorial for jeff bush will be held at a later date. a. about c news, new york. lisa argen is here, our meteorologist, to tell us what is on tap weather-wise. >> waking up to a few light showers. not everyone is seeing them but as we head outside now

7hd showing you some scattered light showers across the bay. meteorologist lisa argen will be along in just a bit with your full accuweather forecast. this is the first weekend of those federally mandated sequester cuts. the impact seems minimal so far but that hasn't alleviated concerns by some over what is to come. we are more. 27-year-old maria and joe, a civilian defense department employee, is preparing for the worst. >> i do live pay clerk to paycheck. >> but ager, resentment about this? >> no, mostly disappointment. >> she's called her electric company asking for special dispensation when the furloughs begins where she works. one of possible 750,000 pentagon employees in a similar situation. these force today rethink her spending, buying her grocery in bulk. >> you are counting every dollar?

>> every dollar. >> this is not going to be an apocalypse, it's just done. >> $85 billion will fall directly on the pentagon. one aircraft carrier will not be deploying. they will curb air force flying hours and some offices will close. the department of defense and civilian employees go out in april. it might not be as initially dire as predicted that's because the full effect won't be felt for another month and we are weeks away from the next budget deadline which could potentially lead to a government shut down. >> there's no sign there is going to be progress here in washington to reach a deal on restoring those budget cuts. abc news, the white house. >> house minority leader nancy pelosicy was in town yesterday during an event sponsored by the coalition of 100 black women.

she talked bat voting rights act heard before the u.s. supreme court last week. >> i took special interest in that because the most recent voting rights act was written in my office with john lewis and other members of our congressional black caucus. it was a strong protection for our democracy. the justices heard arguments against a particular section of the act dealing with voting rights protection. many of the, arguments claim the matter was for the legislative branch, not the judicial. be sure to watch abc's "this week" for more on the forced federal cuts and how they might impact you. and the college of cardinals meet to choose the next pope. don't miss it coming up at 8:00 right here on abc7. it was nearly one year ago that hannah nuri was hit by a car. she survived while her father and younger sister were killed. since then she and her mom left

the house they once called home. this weekend some volunteers helped to make the two feel more settled in their new surroundings. here's abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian. >> oh, my god! >> for the first time in a long time excitement and happiness are filling the nuri home. >> oh, my gosh. >> oh, my gosh! is it the same room? >> stoorai and hannah are starting a new chapter in life. last year they have lived in a very dark place. it's the day a 17-year-old driver crashed into her husband and other daughter while they were riding their bikes. the father and one daughter died instantly and hannah recovered. >> it was just basically dead inside but you live for your

other child. >> and that's where healing spaces comes in. >> it was certainly tragic. just thinking of an accident of that proportion is just heart-wrenching. >> the high school club chews one person to do an extreme makeover for each year. students from carondelet and de la salle raised $10,000 and went to work on the home. they took hannah's bedroom from this to this. >> it's awesome and perfect. >> with one space healed, the focus can shift elsewhere. since the crash happened, all the damage has been repaired on treat boulevard. the city even put in a new fire hydrant, but the family hasn't forgotten and that's why there will be a vigil right here this april 7th. in concord, abc7 news. well, we had some very dry months january, february.

are we going to change that for march? >> we are. the third driest on record for san francisco. as we head outside right now, some of that subtropical moisture you saw yesterday reaching the bay area from the east bay to the south bay in the form of light raindrops. not all of this is reaching the ground. the layers between 12,000 and 15,000 feet pretty dry. but as you look at live doppler 7hd you see a smattering of light showers from ukiah all the way through vallejo and livermore this morning. modesto. we are looking at the showers. so really things beginning to moisten up. as that happens we are looking at conditions bringing us a little bit of a wet start to your sunday. but now this will be with us throughout the rest of the day. in fact, we are looking at it to clear out and see a little bit in terms of partly cloudy skies throughout the afternoon. so a few computer problems here.

not totally able to advance my graphics. there we go. you notice here by vallejo look at a few showers. and through livermore, 580, down around milpitas and palo alto, san francisco and even santa cruz looking at a little bit of light shower activity. keep that in mind if you are headed out early. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. it should range from 60 to 66. through the evening hours we are looking at numbers dropping off with clear conditions. tomorrow looks to be a dry day. we will see a better chance of showers coming in on tuesday and wednesday. but still this one not that impressive. anywhere from a half-inch to inch of rain. notice the temperatures, only 50s and 60s. the 70s are long gone and by next weekend we are dry again. we are ranging anywhere from 70 to 80% of normal, which is not bad but that's due to all the rain that came in late 2012.

accuweather forecast. you know, it's been 19 years since two teachers launched a program for underserved kids. the program called knowledge is power program or kip has grown into a network in schools in 20 states. kip wanted to see if the charter schools are on the right track and commissioned a study done only at their middle schools. here is what lyanne melendez found out. >> the moment you walk on to one of their campuses you know you are at a kip charter school. students must walk this a straight line. in a minute we will tell you why this kind of discipline is essential to their learning. kip wanted to know if they are doing a better job in student achievement at their 43 middle schools than other traditional public schools. the study was done over a six-year period by an independent policy research group called mathematica.

>> the study looked at student achievement in math, reading, science and social studies. >> they took the results from state and national tests and found that kip schools were able to improve student achievement in all those areas and better than students at traditional public schools with the same kind of socioeconomic background. three days a week kip students stay at school until 5:00 p.m. on saturdays they offer tutoring for those who need it. then there's the homework. >> it's kind of easy but there's a lot of it. >> according to the study, the longer days had little effect on student achievement. what did was the amount of time a teacher spent on a subject matter. classes here are longer. >> one thing we did see was that the more time on task was associated with higher scores. >> now back to the discipline issue. the study found that those who were forced to behave did better

in the classroom. >> we don't have to focus on behaver problems or who is dressed the best, we don't have to focus on anything else but learning. >> in the long run i know it will pay off and i get an acceptanceler from college or high school, i know it will pay off in the future. >> in oakland. lyanne melendez, abc7 news. oakland mayor jean quan has apologized for a lock-picking class held in her city. it attracted several interested students last night. mayor quan said the class strikes the wrong note in oakland, which is trying to reduce its crime rate. the instructor said the class is more for tech people who want to know how things work. >> we are certainly not blind to the fact it's a very loaded term, and in oakland especially the recent press coverage garnered there was a lot of mixed emotion and we were sensitive to that. we were happy with the number of community leaders who engaged in the dialogue and wanted to see

what it was all about. >> it was called workshop weekend oakland and other classes include cheese makings and the basics of soldering. >> st. mary's program was based on ncaa probation. they took to the court last night for the first time since the sanctions for recruiting violations were announced. the ncaa put st. mary's on four years probation. sanctions include a loss of two scholarships each year and a five-game suspension for head coach randy bennett next season. it has been the talk of the campus the past few days. >> kind of hostile. people are talking and like i play golf. it's been hard for our sport because we think something is going to happen with our recruits and it affects everyone. we are a small tech community. i think we can get through it. obviously four years some things are going on, so i think it will be fine. >> abc7 sports anchor mike shumann will have the exciting highlights of a close game

showing some precipitation moving in from the ocean from west to east. we've got it from the north bay all the way down to san jose. now it is right, not all of it is reaching the ground. but from san francisco to the east bay around concord and livermore we do have some returns. you can see hercules looking a little wet, as well as moraga. you see around daly city and sfo and finale around gilroy and salinas looking at the possibility of some light showers. so if you see any, they will be light. they won't be lasting. they are spotty. we are talking about a couple hundreds at best. temperatures cooler this morning with the cloudy skies. upper 40s to the mid-50s. for this afternoon we have lower 50s at our coast. it will be cool to the mid-60s. we will talk about a morris organized system heading our way when we check out the full seven-day outlook. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. top athletes from all over the world are preparing to take the

plunge into the freezing waters of the bay. it's the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. abc news reporter kira klapper is joining us live at the marina green where the swimmers are going to take off later this morning. >> they are, carolyn. good morning to you. there are a lot of nerves, but mainly a lot of excitement here on the marina green this morning. i will get out of the way so you can show you the transition area. this is where the triathletes, after their swim, will get on their bikes and after their bike ride they will leave their bikes here and start their run. the first swimmers get in the frigid bay at 7:30. the best of the best professional triathletes i'm told are expected to cross the tin line in just few hours by 9:30. in between the 2,000 competitors have a mile and a half swim from alcatraz to the shore, a half-mile run to get to the transition area, and an 18-mile bike race and an 8-mile run through san francisco. we captured some of the triathletes loading up into

their shuttles to be taken to their boats this morning. one competitor i spoke with came from colorado. he's done seven triathlons. he tells me he was 100 pounds heavier when he started training for those triathlons. he feels better now. he says he's 100 pounds lighter. this is his first escape from alcatraz, and he tells me how he feels going into this morning's race. take a listen. >> a little nervous. got to be. the water is a little chilly coming from colorado but it's going to be a fun day. >> the water is so cold because of the time of year. so take a listen to this little factoid i just found out. it's the 33 year of the escape from alcatraz. it's usually in june but it was moved to march to accommodate the america's cup. the water is colder, it's expected to be 51 degrees. it's usually 55 trees when the event typically happens in june. i'm told a four degree difference is a big difference.

also, it's very windy so the once will be rough. coming up in about an hour i spoke with the youngest competitor in the escape from alcatraz this morning. it was a total fluke. i ran into her on the sidewalk. she came from new zealand. she's 13 years old. you will hear from her in one hour. reporting live from the marina green, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> good for her. thank you, kira. this is the first sunday without a pope for the world's one billion catholics. the event picking the pope will begin tomorrow in vatican city with the cardinals conclave. the pope resigned, becoming the first pontiff in 600 years to step down. changes are already being seen in vatican city. pope's apartment has been locked, his private elevator has been taped shut and a new papal ring must also be made. the ring is destroyed when the pope dice or in this case resigns. >> talk about destruction of the

seal, it's simply to make some scratch marks or something to prevent the seal from being used ever again. >> a stove has yet to be installed in the sistine chapel. white smoke come from the stove announces to the world a new pope has been elected. this morning an independent living facility in bakersfield is defending actions by its employees. officials say staff acted properly in not giving cpr to a woman who was unconscious from a heart attack last tuesday. the 911 operator pleaded with the staff to help the woman. >> well, will the fire department be here. >> they have been on the way all this time but we can't wait. this lead is going to die. >> yeah. >> okay. well, then, if you get any stranger that happens to walk by that's willing to help. i understand if you are telling me your boss is telling you you can't do it. if there's a human being, is there anybody that's willing to help this lead and not let her

die? >> not at this time. >> well, an ambulance arrived minutes after that call, but the 87-year-old woman did die at a hospital. new controversy this morning about rain and pregnancy. another gop leader saying pregnancies from rape are rare. in an interview with our media partner, san jose mercury news, the president of the powerful california republican assembly said granted the percentage of pregnancies due to rape is small because it's an act of violence because the body is traumatized. her statement was made while she was being critical of the same type of comment made last year by republican senate candidate todd aken of missouri. new this morning the vietnamese-american community will unavailable new freeway signs this afternoon showing where san jose's little saigon

community is located. this after a five year struggle. it was a battle to get the name "little sigh gone" adopted. this afternoon a celebration begins at the center located on story road. there will be speeches, a ribbon cutting ceremony and even lie on dances to celebrate growing up on 101 and 280 to guide tourists and the culture rally diverse story community. we may know why yahoo has banned working from home, a policy change she announced last week. a new website business insider said myer data to help with the decision. she got tired of seeing empty parking lots. so she checked the network they log in for work. many employees were not logging in very often so she eliminated all work from home arrangements. big problems for those daily

deal discount websites. sites like group upon are doing some major overhauls because they continue to lose money. on friday groupon fired andrew mason, who sent out a letter to his staff saying i was fired today. groupon lost 75% of its value since it's public debut 15 months ago. living social is also struggling. it lost $650 million last year and has laid off 10% of its staff. in san francisco yesterday young women who took center stage in a conference with elected female officials. the event was attended by more than 250 high school and college students. participants say with so many young women under pressure to look and act a certain way, some words of advice are always welcome. >> it gets really important for them to come out and talk to us and tell us how they got to the point they are at right now so we can feel empowered to be like

lisa argen will be along to talk about that and the chance of rain in just a bit. >> well, it's not quite mind reading but it may be the closest scientists have ever come. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom paid a visit to stanford researchers who found a way to watch what's happening deep inside the brain of a curious little critter. >> this isn't the kind of mouse you would normally plug into a computer but that's exactly what stanford researchers have done. >> this is literally a usb mouse? >> correct. >> they have planted a tiny lens inside the mouse brain. the mouse want wear it like a hat and this is what the mouse sees. >> we saw this activity. >> these are neurons, the cells that make up the brain, firing with electrical impulses you can actually see. it's the stuff neuroscientists have dreamed of. >> it was just as we imagined it. >> and it could be the key to

in my backyard just basking in the sun. yesterday cold. >> well, yeah. it was cooler certainly in the city with that on shore flow. we did have some 70s yesterday. a lot of the subtropical moisture in the way of clouds was overhead. receipt now some of that is allowing for a few drops of rain outside. live doppler 7hd. the official run size 6:38 setting 6:06. you see the returns offshore and a few over the east bay and the south bay. we will continue to see some of this rotate in but we are also going to see a little clearing throughout the afternoon. and some of the sunshine could allow to destabilize the atmosphere and allow for more showers here in the higher elevations of the east bay and north bay. you are looking at 680 and 580. the rain showers around antioch and closer to san francisco you can see, if you are lucky, maybe a drop or two of rain. and further to the east over the hills here we are looking at some light shower activity south. not much going on here.

and a few areas of returns over the higher elevations. so the roof camera, temperatures in the 50s with the cloud cover right now. a 2 in san jose. 50 half moon bay. we are looking at the bay bridge where more clouds are in the east bay and with that the numbers are mild from the upper 40s santa rosa to 53 in fairfield. fremont 53. 50 gilroy. the forecast for the rest of the day, mostly cloudy, a chance of showers. we will keep that through the afternoon but with a few sunny breaks a possibility of more showers but they will be widely scattered. and then cooler temperatures with rain coming our way on tuesday. monday is dry. here's the satellite and radar composite. you see this disorganized system. you have a split in the jet stream. moisture electric northern california all way down to san luis, not a whole lot is amounting with that system. we are lookings at another one. this will bring cooler air and

sierra snow with low snow levels around here remember we will take you through the next couple days. you notice by this afternoon still the higher elevations of the north bay and east bay could see a light shower. the rest of the day maybe spotty light showers with partly cloudy skies and into monday some fog then clear conditions. tuesday the bulk of the day is looking dry but look what happens by the afternoon. 2:00 cloverdale, up in sonoma county and santa rosa looking at the wet weather. for the evening commute tuesday looking wet. we could see more showers turning more scattered by overnight on wednesday. that's a more significant system that we are looking forward to. otherwise just a few light showers with a mix of clouds and sun. with those spotty light showers not amounting to much. the rest of the forecast throughout the state much cooler. ten degrees cooler from southern california and back home we are looking at numbers here mainly in the low 60s. upper 50s at our coast and the look ahead our chance today,

>> good morning, everyone. it is sunday, march 3rd. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. from our roof camera we are looking at clear condition necessary parts of the bay area. but clouds have overspread some parts, as well. a few light raindrops. we have a little bit of everything going on right now. live doppler 7hd from cloverdale all the way up the coast from san francisco and into the east bay. livermore has been reporting a few light raindrops.
