it happened at blossom and calaro avenues. he intentionally rammed several patrol car. we have some dramatic video shot by witnesses. [sirens] [shooting] >> from the moments the pursuit ended you can hear more than a dozen gunshots a police spokesman said officers had reason to believe their suspect was dangerous. >> they get out of their cars, they are dealing with what they believe to be an armed suspect. they draw their firearms and gave commands. at that point he displayed some type of threatening behavior toward the officers. >> this pursuit started at low speed and then sped up and ended miles away near blossom and calaroe. witnesses said they saw it as it ended and saw dangerous speeds on highway 85. >> this guy comes up on the shoulder on the left side, zooms by us and then cuts across, cuts us off and a friend that was with us on a bike. >> during the chase police say

the suspect threw several items out of the car. >> to the point we actually had a couple of citizens approach officers with items that were discarded from the suspect vehicle saying he threw this out of the car. >> one of the officers saw the suspect pull a weapon during the pursuit but they have not recovered one at the shooting scene. as the chase ended police cars swarmed the neighborhood. witnesses say the suspect car was going slow before it finally stopped. >> there was no stopping him. it took 23 cop cars to, you know, just even like subdue the guy. >> san jose police are still trying to recover all the items that were tossed out of the car by the driver during the chase, including a possible weapon. if anyone happens to come across any of those items, they are urged to call san jose police so they can collect them as evidence. in san jose, abc7 news. >> new this morning fire crews in campbell of work to go clean up a big mess caused by a small

fire that broke out last night inside our residential high-rise for seniors. no one was injured, but some residents are being helped by the red cross because their homes are damaged. the fire was minor, contained to just one 12th-floor apartment. it set off of the sprinkler system that quickly put out the flames but the water drained all the way down through all twelve floors directly below. firefighters had to go floor by floor checking the damage. >> trying to ascertain how many of the units are damaged to the point that the occupants are displaced. most people are obviously going to be fine. >> those seniors fortunate enough to be allowed to go back home had to climb the stairs because the fire left elevators out of service. >> mental health counselors say the santa cruz community will benefit from intervention to cope with last week's tragedy. detective sergeant loran "butch: baker and elizabeth butler were shot and killed last tuesday.

one counselor said the community is so small many people were just one or two degrees of separation from the victims. a touching gift was found at the memorial. someone left their purpose he -- purple heart medal and a note read in part the purple heart is for the sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty. then you have the other spectrum. this man allegedly arrested for stealing flowers from the memorial. 53-year-old kenneth moffet has been charged with vandalism and public intoxication. a memorial for detective butler and detective sergeant baker will be held thursday at noon at hp pavilion in san jose. it had to be moved from santa cruz to san jose to accommodate the expected large crowd. a mid-air emergency had rescue crews scrambling at san francisco international airport yesterday. sky 7hd shows united flight 378

after it made a safe landing, but had to be towed to the arrival gate. the pilot reported a problem with the hydraulic system after the plane took off from vancouver. although the landing went smoothly, sfo crews were well prepared. >> it was a declared emergency so we did have all the emergency equipment out on the air field to meet the craft. >> the plane had 107 passengers and ten crewmembers aboard. the flight was about an hour late on arrival but that was due to a late departure from vancouver. the unmanned space x dragon spacecraft has just arrived at the international space station to dock, delivering a ton of supplies, including experiments designed by some south bay high school students. the privately-owned rocket arrived a day later than planned. that is great news for students at fremont christian school who spent five months designing experiments to see how microgravity affects plant growth. the spacecraft almost didn't

make it there at all. shortly after lift off the rocket's second-stage thrusters failed to work. it took southern california flight controllers several hours to regain control and continue the mission. the dragon will return to experiments, samples in april. space x is a private company headed by elan musk, the founder of pay pal. in florida officials will demolish the house near tampa where a man was swallowed by a sink hole. this is a live look of the demolition that started about 40 minutes ago. rescuers have ended their effort to find a man's body because the area is so unstable it is just too risky. abc news reporter chuck sievertson has the details. >> we feel we have done everything we can. >> authorities are no longer looking for the body of jeff bush, a 37-year-old man who was swallowed by a sinkhole as he slept in his bedroom thursday

night. >> at this point it's not able to recover the body. >> they will demolish the house because of fears it will cave in at any moment. >> i don't think there's any hope. they say the hole keeps getting bigger and i don't think they will be able to find him. >> the hole is growing. grounds around it so unstable equipment being brought in will be kept on the perimeter. this part of florida is dubbed sinkhole alley. take a look how many have been recorded in the last six decades and 40% of the country is prone to sink holes. they form when water dissolves the limestone underground and the surface stays intact until it collapses. usually there are cracks or structural problems or something to indicate the sinkhole is forming, but not this one. >> the problem with this one is it was entirely within the building, at least initially, and below slabs so it was hidden until it became catastrophic. >> houses next to the bush home are at risk so officials gave families just a half-hour to go

since april 7th of last year they have lived in a very dark place. it's the day a 17-year-old driver crashed into her husband and her two daughters while they were riding their bikes. the father and one daughter died instantly and hannah recovered. >> we are fine and healthy, but you are basically dead inside. but you live for your other child. >> and that's where healing spaces comes in. >> it was certainly tragic. just thinking of an accident of that proportion is just heart-wrenching. >> the high school club chooses one person to do an extreme makeover for each year. students from carondelet and de la salle raised $10,000 and went to work on the home. they took hana's bedroom from this to this.

>> it's awesome and perfect. >> with one space healed, the focus can shift elsewhere. since the crash happened, all the damage has been repaired on treat boulevard. the city even put in a new fire hydrant, but the family hasn't forgotten and that's why there will be a vigil right here this april 7th. in concord, abc7 news. well, it's been exceptionally dry here in the bay area lately. lisa argen is here now to talk about the possibility of a little bit of precipitation. >> yeah, not much to write home about today. a better system heads our way late on tuesday. the radar is definitely lit up this morning. a few drops perhaps in your neighborhood. live doppler 7hd. you see the moisture offshore and a few areas of light rain over into the east bay and the central valleys. we are going to the north bay because that's where you don't see much. you have to go north of cloverdale. but over into the east bay from livermore and pleasanton, around the snow grade. a little bit of wet weather

perhaps. it's not all reaching the ground. further south we are looking at some light showers perhaps and along the santa cruz area more showers are offshore. so basically you are waking up to cloudy skies and once again mild conditions with numbers ranging from the 40s and 50s. 54 in san carlos with 50 havlat moon bay. a little breezy at times. we are looking at numbers in the east bay not much different. it's a warm start due to all the cloud cover yesterday. we had all that subtropical moisture in the form of the clouds and we saw plenty of mid-70s up in the north bay. 52 in livermore as well as fairfield. the forecast for the rest of the day mostly cloudy with a chance of showers in the morning. also with some sunny breaks in the afternoon. it will be partly cloudy and the best chance of rain comes to the higher elevations of the north and east bay throughout the afternoon. then we get a break on monday before the next semenov. so we've got energy to the north bringing us rain in seattle and portland and then this disorganized branch bringing

just the scattered showers, or if any at all, just the sprinkles around the bay. lots of cloud cover. high pressure finally giving way, pushing off to the east. and with this system moving through today, that will pave the way for a stronger and much colder system headed our way by late on tuesday. so the rest of the day today featuring mostly partly cloudy skies. 1:00 today maybe an isolated shower. the higher elevations of the north bay, the east bay and elsewhere you will just notice the cloud cover, temperatures as much as five to ten degrees cooler. as you head through the rest of the evening hours and morning hours, we are starting out on the gray side with the fog tomorrow morning. but we are dry and sunny by the afternoon. it's tuesday, by about 2:00, when we will look at the possibility of more rain from cloverdale, sonoma county. and the evening commute looks wet on tuesday. by 7:00 san francisco, the peninsula looking at the wet weather through the overnight hours into wednesday morning. so this system may be bringing

on "good morning america." >> oakland mayor jean quan has apologized for a lock-picking class in her city news letter. it atacted many interested students last night. they say the class strikes a wrong note in a city trying to reduce their crime rate. they say it's more to protect people who just want to know how things work. >> we certainly aren't blind to the fact it's a very loaded term, and in oakland especially the recent press coverage garnered, there was a lot of mixed emotion and we were very sensitive to that. we were very happy with the number of community and civic leaders that engaged in a dialogue and wanted to come out and see what it was all about. >> the class is part of an event called workshop weekend oakland. other classes include cheese making and the basics of soldering. there's no loss of enthusiasm for the st. mary's basketball team after the program was placed on ncaa probation.

they took to the court last night for the first time since the sanctions for recruiting violations were announced. the ncaa put st. mary's on four years probation. sanctions include a loss of two scholarships each year and a five-game suspension for head coach randy bennett next season. it has been the talk of the campus the past few days. >> kind of hostile. people are talking and like i play golf. it's been hard for our sport because we think something is going to happen with our recruits and it affects everyone. we are a small tech community. i think we can get through it. obviously four years some things are going on, so i think it will be fine. >> abc7 sports anchor mike shumann will have the exciting highlights of a close game against santa clara later in sports. up next, choosing a successor. the vatican gears up to decide the leader of the catholic church. what's next for the cardinals. >> plus we are one short hour away from the beginning of the

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting off this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning. plenty of cloud cover. mostly dry conditions. the live doppler 7hd picking up moisture offshore. we have seen a few raindrops in the east bay. taking you into livermore, 680 and 580 right now could be a few sprinkles out there. further offshore you will notice we have some returns down 101 and most of this activity is trying to get through some very dry layers. so not having a lot of luck reaching the ground, but if you are out early you may notice that the pavement is wet and you

may need your wipers. but overall we are talking about a cloudy start. things clearing out in the afternoon but with a little bit of sunshine still the possibility of a shower mainly in the higher elevations of the north and east bay. but notice the temperatures. mid-50s to mid-60s. everyone anywhere from five to ten degrees cooler than yesterday. more clouds around this evening for some fog and the opportunity of a better rain chance coming your way in another day or so. i'll detail that for you. carolyn. >> all right. morph a few showers on some top athletes from all over the world who are preparing to take the plunge into the freezing waters of the bay. that's just part of the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. abc7 news reporter kira klapper is joining us live at the marina where the swimmers are getting ready to take off this morning. hi, kira. >> hi carolyn. good morning to you. they are getting ready to take off. in fact take a look behind me at this staging area.

all 2,000 athletes' bikes are set up and just about the last of them are off. there are buses beyond the bikes, if you can see those buses, those are the last buses to take the last triathletes out to the boats that will take them to alcatraz where they will begin their races. now we have video from last year's race. the first swimmers today get in the frigid bay at 7:30. the first group is the best of the best. they are professional triathletes. there are about 35 of them. they are expected to cross the finish line, get this, by 9:30. two hours, depending, of course, on the currents. the bay and the course. the triathlon course is a mile and a half swim. it goes from alcatraz to the shore. they have a half-mile run to get to the transition area and an 18-mile bike race and an 8-mile run through through san francisco.

i spoke with this young lead, it is her longest triathlon, but not her first, and she's racing along her deer dad. >> he decided that it would be a good idea for me to do it. so now i'm here. >> how are you feeling this morning? >> cold and nervous. >> she said she's not aiming for a finish time, just to finish. that's what most of the competitors i spoke with this morning tell me. the water is expected to be colder than usual. 51 degrees is the expected temperature this morning. usually this race is in june. it had to be moved up to march this year to accommodate the america's cup. so as a result the water in june is typically 55 degrees. today in march it's expected to be 51. four degrees doesn't sound like that much of a difference to me, of course. i don't know anything about triathlons and i'm told that does make a big difference. also the currents today could be very strong. so those pro triathletes who are expected to finish in two hours, it might take a little longer

closest scientists have ever come. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom paid a visit to stanford researchers who found a way to watch what's happening deep inside the brain of a curious little critter. >> this isn't the kind of mouse you would normally plug into a computer but that's exactly what stanford researchers have done. >> this is literally a usb mouse? >> correct. >> they have implanted a tiny lens inside the mouse brain. the mouse wears it like a hat and this is what the mouse sees. >> we saw this activity. >> these are neurons, the cells that make up the brain, firing with electrical impulses you can actually see. it's the stuff neuroscientists have dreamed of. >> it was just as we imagined it. >> and it could be the key to the mystery of memory. >> we think it will be useful both for understanding information processing in healthy brains, and there also are applications in brain disease research. >> researchers found every spot on this little track lights up a specific neuron as the mouse scurries by. >> we can reconstruct where the animal is in space by simply looking at the brain activity moving. >> but we found different sets light up on different days as if

guide. we saw 70s in the north bay and 69 in san francisco but numbers dropping into the 50s at our coast. 50 right now santa rosa, 52 fremont and 52 by the delta. the clouds around this morning with mild conditions, a slight chance of a shower. skies becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. still a chance of showers. mainly in the higher terrain. then we look for sunshine to return on monday. stronger system heads our way tuesday. you see the clouds from seattle all the way down to southern california with the moisture offshore. this is subtropical moisture and trying to ring out a few showers. high pressure finally pushing to the east of us and that will pave the way for perhaps a few light raindrops today. maybe a couple hundreds. otherwise we are waiting until the next system because the bulk of the day will feature more clouds. you see a little bit of green here out toward sacramento. the better chance of showers. low clouds and fog in the morning. so it will be a gray start and then a sunny day for monday. temperatures even cooler.

hard-pressed to see any 60s out there. by 2:00 in the afternoon sonoma county and cloverdale looking at a few showers and by the evening commute we have the wet weather right on through the overnight hours into wednesday morning. so it will be much cooler and wetter throughout the middle of the week. 61 today around san mateo with the numbers in the lower 60s out in our east bay valleys for the warmest locations and you will notice we are dry tomorrow, a chance of rain comes in late tuesday. it will stay wet through wednesday and then still kind of unsettled on thursday. so this will bring us sierra snow so it will be a cold system. >> all right. speaking of snow, coming up next a day for the dogs. alaska is getting ready for this year's iditarod. we will tell you how many teams are competing this year.

include blade runner, the fugitive, indiana jones and star wars. as you might expect tonight's event at san jose's california theater is sold out. one of the world's most grueling competitions is getting underway in alaska this morning. the 41st iditarod dog sled race had a ceremonial start in anchorage yesterday. 66 mushers and their dogs rode for 11 miles on trucked-in snow. today they will start racing for real starting about 50 miles to the north. the race covers more than 1,000 miles of frozen wilderness between the towns of willow and knome. the winner will get $50,000 and a brand new truck. this year's competition includes six previous iditarod winners. >> snow there, rain here. lisa argen with your accuweather forecast. >> just a chance. what you will notice out there is the much cooler conditions. it is breezy in spots. as we look outside, the live doppler 7hd right now. you see most of the moisture is
