anybody. and when they do they feel badly about it even if the individual was a serious desperado. no officer wants to use deadly force. another shooting involved union city police. he pointed a gun after running away from a traffic stop. this happened on dire street and media way. >> oh my god. >> san jose police opened fire on a suspect on saturday afternoon. they say he rammed into at least three squad cars and then appeared to be hiding something that was perceived to be a threat. early saturday morning a chase that started in daly city ended in gunfire near candlestick park. an officer shot and killed a driver who police say tried to run from his car and then raised his gun at officers. >> the former chief says he had seconds to make a decision and that court and investigators may spend months

bulletproof vests shouted commands to a woman holed up near the presidio. a rifle and a hatchet were tossed on to the sidewalk and a woman wearing what looked like pajama pants was hauled out of the house. she was taken to a nearby ambulance where people watched as she was examined by paramedics. she didn't smile. >> a neighbor who doesn't want us to use her name out of concern for her safety says she saw the woman trying to get into her nearby building minutes before it began. >> and i confronted her and said what are you trying to do? she twitched and walked away. i saw her walk up the hill. >> police mounted an intense build up. it took two and a half hours to surrender. she broke into the home while residents were out.

>> there was a burglary in progress. they went out and came back. >> police tell us when the residents found the woman in their home they ran out and flagged down a muni bus driver and he called 9-1-1. san francisco police say the woman refused to identify herself. they say the rifle she had actually belonged to the residents of the house. it was not loaded and there was a trigger lock on it. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> the san francisco police department is on alert after a high-powered rifle was stolen from a police car. many officers carry shotguns and rifles in their vehicles while on regular patrol. a member of the sfpd tells abc7 news the ar-15 was taken from an unmarked vehicle like this car. detectives don't know if the thieves broke into the car looking specifically for the rifle, but they point out the ar-15 was properly secured. we have a change of weather ahead. rain is ahead and now to leigh

firefighters arrived at independence high school shortly after 12:30. they found smoke pouring from the building in the center of campus. the sprinkler system kept the flames from causing more damage. the 33rd escape from alcatraz triathalon was marred by the death of one of the athletes from cardiac arrest. javier gomez won the race. they spotted the victim and tried to revive him until paramedics arrived, but it was too late. the victim was identified as a 46-year-old man from texas. this is the first death in the history of the event. rescuers pulled out 150 participants from the swimming part of the race. the triathalon begins with a mile and a half swim from alcatraz to the city followed by an 18-mile bike ride and 18-mile run. a family in san francisco needs your help to find a missing man. 34-year-old chung nguyen disappeared from his home on

friday evening. his family tells police he has the mental capacity of a 12 to 14-year-old. nguyen suffers from depression, gets confused easily and gets lost and can be for -- forgetful. he was wearing a blue jacket and sweat pants and red and white sneakers. town leaders will examine a plan tomorrow which would impose a temporary ban on selling guns. the law would apply to new gun shops. it comes after neighbors voice concerns over the opening of a gun shop. one member has questioned why local authorities granted permission for the store to operate before it obtained its sales permit. the plan needs votes from four of five councilmembers in order to pass. the vallejo school board will layoff dozens of teachers when it meets on wednesday. the school district proposes cutting the equivalent of 46 full time positions from its budget. the state law requires them to notify teachers of layoffs by

new at 11:00, an expectant couple in new york died in a traffic accident, but doctors managed to save their baby boy. the couple was in a cab going to see a doctor because the wife could no longer feel the baby inside of her. she was 24 weeks pregnant. the cab was broadsided by a bmw. >> it is terrible. not even married a year. they are going into the happiest time to have a baby and that's what happens. >> the couple died on arrival to the hospital. *9 baby is in serious

condition. the people in the bmw ran away and police are still searching for them. crews in florida began taking down the home over a sinkhole that killed a man. on thursday the sinkhole opened up and swallowed the man's bedroom. he was never found. family members did manage to save keepsakes such as pictures and a bible. families and homes on both sides of the sinkhole have been evacuated. officials took the precaution because the homes could be compromised by the sinkhole. now to rome where the cardinals are beginning the planning for the conclave, but even before their secretive selection begins a stunning apology from a well-known cards national. david wright has the latest. >> at 9:30, a general assembly of the college of cardinals convenes. the first order of business to prepare for the con clave. as soon as the cardinals give the go away, the little stove will be installed to burn the ballots and communicate the results.

good evening. i'm ama dates. in tonight's headlines, five people have died since thursday after being shot by police around the bay area. the latest shooting took place early this morning in hayward. investigators say an officer opened fire on a driver who tried to ram a police car. a passenger in the car died. the suspects have also died in san francisco and san jose. a woman armed with a shotgun and a hatchet surrendered after a standoff with san francisco police this afternoon. the standoff forced police to evacuate several nearby homes. paramedics took her to the hospital. and san francisco police are looking for a rifle stolen

her photo album and meant only for her boyfriend's eyes. >> it is not something you should be doing knowing that anyone can gain access to your phone. >> amanda went to a lawyer who specializes in computer forensics. >> i suspect at some point she will get the pictures with the phone in tact. >> our hired cyber crimes specialist was able to track down the man who sold the phone to edwin. he learned that the man belongs to a ring of phone thieves. first there is a mule. the person charged with sneaking the phones out of the country. >> as soon as we get these songs they ship them to what their high rate of destination is. the thieves then get the phones ready to sell. >> what they do from there is they try to unblock the phone. they try to do various things to the phone to get it, woulding again and then resold in their market. >> he used this internet skill to locate amanda's blackmailer
