the ground. laura? >> i am standing at the north side of h.p. pavilion. there were hundreds of law enforcement folks mostly standing out here waiting to go inside. you can see they have opened the doors. most of them have gone in. there were some members of the public in that group standing out here. some of them are associated with various law enforcement from the bay area. that included a couple we met from santa cruz who volunteer with the police department and their daughter was the dispatcher on duty when detective baker and butler were gunned down. well hear from them. >> it shows that officers that are sworn to protect us put their lives on the line every moment of every day they are on duty. it is a same we have to lose

sergeant baker and detective butler in this way for our community to come together and realize the respect that we must show law enforcement and their officers. >> we definitely want to support not only the santa cruz p.d. but the families of the officers and it is so very, very tragic. >> we have video coming out. >> those folks, their daughter was the dispatcher on duty when this went down in santa cruz last week. we are showing you, as well, officers from all over california, all over the bay area, all over the country, we understand there are honor guards from departments as far away as new york. we have seen people from san francisco, hayward, south bay, monterey. everyone is here. up to 6,000, we told, law enforcement officials. you can see the north entrance

officers let a somber motorcade procession with 200 cars made its way out of santa cruz this morning en route do a public memorial in san jose. five minutes into the trip, this is what the officers saw: hundreds of people lining an overpass to honor two fallen police officers. >> it is very movely and it makes me realize the officers put their lives on the line every day for our community. >> firefighter flew the american flag from their hook-and-ladder truck and stood at attention as the motorcade drove by. another made a sign with batch numbers of the two police officers killed in the line of cute a week and a half ago. >> this is the time when real character shines. it isn't when everyone is good. that is fun. it is in the troubled times that our true character shows up. i believe we have it.

>> it is unfortunate this had to happen. >> the sheriff deputies are protecting the study while every single santa cruz police officer can attend the memorial. the deputy chief says this department is down but not out. >> i know that the men and women of this department are committed to honoring the legacy of butch and elizabeth. we are committed to serving our community, who have reached out and supported us in our time of need. we are inspired, and, really, sustained by those kind words. >> we are seeing a lot of sheriff deputies from santa cruz county, of course, those folks are protecting the city on behalf of the santa cruz officers who are attending the memorial today. everyone who is showing up here

at kaiser permanente arena are getting this, the memory cards to remember both officers. we are live in santa cruz today for abc7 news. >> memorial bracelets are available to the public in honor of the fallen officers and we tell you about that in a few moments but right now, abc7 news reporter reporter, david, is live from the motorcade procession. >> it was powerful to watch because all of the procession vehicles exited in san jose on the julian street off-ramp and they had to make a short turn to go into the pavilion. people were aware this procession would come through the neighborhood so they lined the streets. we will go to our video to show you, the stretch of julian street was the only place where people in san jose could actually see the procession before it towns into the pavilion. 75 and maybe 100 people did so, lining the sidewalk, watching vehicles from one police agency after another, pass by, with

their blue and red lights flashing. they saw units from as far away as riverside and san bernardino to even medford, oregon. many work at the department of social services and they clutched their hands and saluted and others went thinking of the two fallen officers. >> the outpouring of respect and love to the families is awesome and the fact that there are so many that actually care about the police force although they get such a bad rap it is wonderful to see people saying, wait, we need these guys. quite frankly, we mourn when they are gone. i feel for the families and the residents of santa cruz. it is always been a peaceful and quiet down and to have this disrupt life for them...it seems

>> an autopsy is being done on lion that mauled an intern to death in a central valley animal park. investigators are looking deeper into why the woman was in the enclosure and what provoked the attack. kira klapper is live with the latest from the newsroom. >> it has been less than 24 hours since hanson was mauled by the african lion. her father, paul, spoke to use -- abc news and said she was fearless and this was her dream job. responding sheriff deputies found the 24-year-old severely injured but they could not get to the body because the lion was blocking it. they had to shoot the animal to reach her but she died in the enclosure. she was only two months into her six-month internship and he says she feared his daughter would be attacked, and wonners why slow was in the end closure where only the owner was supposed to

union, and the motorcade procession hoping for dry air which they got great santa cruz to san jose but we will bring it back here now and talk to mike nicco, and the afternoon when they wrap it up and leave. >> showers are possible as they head back. you mention good news, it is dry in most areas. we will show you what is going on. right now with live doppler 7 hd, you can see h.p. pavilion and the green radar moving through. notice how it is quiet there. as we go down all the way to 17th and santa cruz, it is quiet here, but you can see the radar runs to the north so we will zoom in to palo alto and stanford, woodside, and redwood city and menlo park...sprinkles here, possibly light rain falling in those areas. that is what we are dealing with for the most part. we can see radar runs across the san mateo bridge and it looks like a few sprinkles are falling

there. the bulk of the rain is over the ocean and that is where the low will stay for the most part, having a hard time climbing a shore but a better chance as we head into the afternoon especially when the sun sets it is easier for the air to saturate and we will see rain, possibly closer to the coast at the evening commute. the san mateo bring does not show anything, as far as water on the roadway right now but you can see the clouds are hanging lower as the moisture is on the increase. temperature right now in santa rosa is 55 and napa is 54, and fremont is at 56 and gilroy, also, at 55. this is how it looks from the roof camera to the ferry building and the bay bridge. there is some sun and thinner clouds from time to time further to the east. 52 in san francisco, and oakland and san jose at 55. half moon bay at 54 and santa cruz at 53 degrees. we will warm up, maybe one or two more degrees but the clouds

will thicken. more this afternoon and in the early evening was on the back side of the system, dry air filters in tomorrow and we could go another seven or nine days without rain after this system pulls through. you can see the low, hugging the coast, the best radar returns right off the coast, but they are rotating in the counterclockwise fashion toward us so, again, as we talked about all day the best chance of measurable rain is near the coast but we will get a chunk of energy that will pinwheel around the bay area headed to the evening rush hour so it could be wet. headed from 9:00 to midnight you can see the low is sinking far enough to the south and we lose a little bit of an influence from it and we wake up with clouds and patchy fog possible and the air mass will still be a little damp and you can see the dry air moving in by noon with the clouds braking up and other than a stray shower possible, we will see a lot of sunshine, with temperatures warmer than today. speaking of today's temperatures it is mainly in the mid-to-upper

officer. sergeant loran baker was a veteran and elizabeth was an officer who fought crime. >> it is rather dark in the pavilion. people are gathering and they expect 18,000 people. the family wanted an indoor location so that mourners could be together and the police chief searched long and hard for that. santa cruz doesn't have a venue for those who wanted to pay tribute to the fallen officers. they are the first officers killed in the history of the police department. caskets arrived this morn family and friends and here in the bay area are here at today's service. among the speakers
